Installed SteamOS on PC. Now stuck on motherboard flash screen!

Reddit Linux_Gaming - 05. August 2025 - 18:06

Hi all, looking for some help. Installed SteamOS on one of my pcs. Installation went ok. But after the reboot its now stuck on the motherboard flash screen. I have tried to reinstall it multiple times and always gets stuck here. I already tried disabling secure boot. Tried to flash the usb drive with both rufus and balena etcher. Using an AMD GPU. Not sure what else can I do to fix this.

Fixing anti cheating issues by playing on Windows?

Reddit Linux_Gaming - 05. August 2025 - 17:54

I do it like this. I only have a Windows install for anti cheat games, and no personal data whatsoever on the said PC. When i want, I just plug that SSD. Whats the point if this you ask? Well, on Windows PC there is no personal data to data mine from, since there is only games now.

But, I wonder if I should unplug my Linux disks too? Can those anticheat malware software stuff probe my Linux disks? They are btrfs. I highly suspect that windows can read btrfs and maybe ext4 without letting us know. How would we know if they did anyway? The windows is closed source.

Linux destroys Windows in native gaming performance.

Reddit Linux_Gaming - 05. August 2025 - 17:15

I was wondering how much better is ZorinOS (the Linux distro i'm daily driving) than Windows 11 in terms of native Gaming performance, so i downloaded Minecraft on both, the game is natively supported on both Systems. downloaded a Modpack and tested both.

Sure enough, I got about 50-70% more FPS on ZorinOS than on windows 11 (as you can see on the top left corner) with the game on Zorin reaching a maximum of 460FPS and on Windows 11 a maximum of 250FPS (Couldn't get more accurate avg results, sorry).

These numbers aren't the most accurate, since i didn't use MSI afterburner or MangoHUD to get Avgs. but it gives a very good idea about how inefficient windows is. and by the way, The game seemed to consume more ram and GPU power on Windows as you can see on the right and left top corners.

Something that confused me tho, was that when i tried the game with Shaders, i got the exact same FPS on both systems, a maximum of 36FPS (bad i know, its an R 5600g).

Performance worse on external monitors? (NVIDIA Laptop user BTW)

Reddit Linux_Gaming - 05. August 2025 - 16:44

I'm aware of the performance hit you take when using NVIDIA GPUs and also that -generally- 1440p perfomance is worse than 1080p on Linux vs. Windows, but has anyone else noticed that your FPS drops massively when you game on an external monitor as opposed to your laptop's display?

FYI, I know powering two displays slightly affects performance and if you turn the laptop's screen off you get a little boost, however, even then performance on an external monitor on Linux is worse than laptop screen only (minus 10-20% maybe).

I know NVIDIA is far from perfect, I'm not really complaining, this is more of "has anyone else noticed this?" kinda post.

Hardware specs: 2021 ASUS ROG Zephyrus G15 w/ RTX 3070 (FreeSync panel) + Gigabyte M27Q external monitor (also FreeSync) [monitor connected straight to GPU via DisplayPort > USB-C] running Nobara 42

Guide: Rockstar Games Launcher on Linux 2025

Reddit Linux_Gaming - 05. August 2025 - 16:09

So i have been trying to get Rockstar Games Launcher to work on my Linux Mint for some time using Lutris how a website instructed me, it didnt work. I just found out you can do this very easy. Here is how:

  1. Download the latest installer for the Rockstar Games Launcher from their website.
  2. Open up steam and add it as a non-steam game, go to properties/compatibility and choose a wine version, i tested with proton10.9
  3. Launch it and go through the installer. Dont Launch the Launcher at end.
  4. Now open up your file manager and go to home/.steam/steam/steamapps/compactdata/, here find which folder is for your non steam game(it shoult be the last modified.
  5. Open it up and go to pfx/drive_c/ProgramFiles/Rockstar Games/Launcher
  6. Copy the currect directory and go back to steam. Select the non steam game you used for the installer and go to properties, change Start In to the dir you copied, and change target to the dir you copied + /Launcher.exe(Dont remove the " at the start and end)
  7. You are done, just launch it again and log in and download your games!

How do I run Proton without steam?

Reddit Linux_Gaming - 05. August 2025 - 15:57

I would love to be able to use proton just like wine. I would like to have a "run using proton" option when I run a .exe file. I would like to have a ~/.proton directory with all my apps in there. Is there any way to do so?

Steam Linux Native compactiblity issue.

Reddit Linux_Gaming - 05. August 2025 - 15:21

For native games like Tooth and Tail, newer distros like Kubuntu 25 and Manjaro 25 seem to have a problem with supporting. Older distros like Linux Mint 22 seem to support it just fine. There seems to be dependency issue causing unplanned obsolescence with such natives. Is there a software that brings backwards compatibility? If not there should be. Proton can work, but that seems too ironic. Dependance on Windows should be limited.

Frustrated due to a really stupid problem.

Reddit Linux_Gaming - 05. August 2025 - 15:00

Not new to Linux, but new to daily driving it, if that makes sense. I've run into this problem on EVERY distro I've tried: I live in an area with shit internet, and as a result, have a few game drives so I'm not constantly having to uninstall and redownload. my games. I have Disks set up to automount everything on boot. I have verified my drives are mounted at boot. Yet, each and every time I reboot my PC, I have to redirect Steam and Heroic to where the games are installed.

Just posting here to as a last resort to see if anybody has any suggestions?

Battlefield 6 Sucks, Probably?

Reddit Linux_Gaming - 05. August 2025 - 14:47

I got early access to the Battlefield Open Beta, and was able to pre-install it this morning. It's obvious what happens when I try to run it, but thought I would share it anyway, Apologies for the youtube video link.

"So there are 344,000 members on the this subreddit. If only 10% of you would go and write a negative review on Steam (when you can) stating "not compatible with Linux, do not recommend" it would get noticed I'm sure. But would EA do anything about it? Probably not. Would it make a difference? Maybe. But again, probably not.

So why am I pissed off then? Well, I just don't get the feeling that we really care enough to make the difference."
