Recently, I jumped back on the Linux bandwagon after a slight hiatus. With the release of Ubuntu 24.04, I figured it was a good time as any. I noticed though that this time around, there was audio distortion and crackling when using Steam or Proton in general. This seems due to a quirk with Pipewire and my particular hardware. The issue has thankfully been identified and documented on Pipewire's bug tracker. It took me awhile to find a solution, so I'm providing it here to hopefully bring more attention to it.

If you use Pipewire and notice some crackling or distortion issues, perhaps give this a try:

1. Create a new folder for the Pipewire config settings and move the config settings there

mkdir ~/.config/pipewire cp /usr/share/pipewire/*.conf ~/.config/pipewire

2. Edit the pulse-properties.conf file

sudo nano ~/.config/pipewire/pipewire-pulse.conf

3. Find the pulse properties section, uncomment the following keys, and set their values to either 512 or 1024

pulse.min.req = 1024/48000

pulse.min.frag = 1024/48000

pulse.min.quantum = 1024/48000

4. Reboot

Now that I finally got MO2 working and began modding Skyrim, I noticed that MO2 is not loading the Creation Club content.

I originally had the AE content on my game before MO2, and I have the files in the Steam game's folder.

I also noticed MO2 seems to recognize the CC content in its files.

I believe what's going on is MO2 doesn't have those files (but somehow is reading its entries), but I don't know how to transfer (copy/paste) them from Steam's folder to MO2 folder.

Does anyone know how to solve this so I can have all the CC content on MO2?

I Installed Heroic Launcher in my Fedora 40 (using X11 session) and when I launch Rocket League it freezes at loading screen, but when I switch to Wayland it runs smooth. I know Wayland is going to be the future of Fedora but at this moment I prefer to stay at X11 (at least until Fedora 41) so, is there some package missing for my X11 or what?

I'm trying to play XDefiant on my PC and everything boots as it should. But when it passes the title screen it gets stuck on "Loading 0%" and the circle freezes. I'm running on Lutris under Nobara 39 and my GPU is an RTX 4070. These are my settings and I do have the pdh.dll in the XDefiant install folder.

My CPU and GPU and RAM are more than enough to run ELDEN RING at 60 fps at 1080p (RX6600 8GB, Ryzen 5 3600, 16GB RAM). But my framerate was only going up to about 45. Using MANGOHUD I could see that the 'limiter' was my GPU, which was only being used to about 66%, despite its core frequency being at max (2400Mhz). Turns out the issue was that I was using AMDVLK drivers, and not RADV (or vulkan-radeon).

FIX:

Firstly install vulkan-radeon if not installed. If you are using an Arch or Arch based distro, type on terminal pacman -S vulkan-radeon lib32-vulkan-radeon.

Now set the Launch Option on Steam: RADV_PERFTEST=aco VK_ICD_FILENAMES=/usr/share/vulkan/icd.d/radeon_icd.i686.json:/usr/share/vulkan/icd.d/radeon_icd.x86_64.json %command%.

As in the title, under windows I had limited the frequency to allow boosting only to specific extent, but still have boosting work. Under linux, with gamemode the cpu reaches over 100C quite quickly, constantly running at maximum frequency, and that's simply unacceptable. Even when downloading on steam, the cpu quickly goes over 95C. This is how hot this chip runs at full load, and I know they are rated for that temp range, but I'm not comfortable running it like that. I did some legwork myself, but didn't find any clear cut solution. I'm not well versed in linux, any help appreciated.

Okay, I need help. I've been trying to get mod installers on Linux but none have worked, so I want to install mods manually but don't know how. I have been able to install body mods but haven't been able to install weapon/quests/character mods. I have tried it in the past but the mods never appear in game. (Games being fallout 3/4/Vegas, Skyrim). Op Systems Linux Mint.

Hello everybody, as the title states my steam games that ive downloaded on my mounted ssd

(using sudo ntfsfix /dev/sdb1 just with my path)

will try to launch for a second, and then just wont, it will go from launching back to ready to play!

these games do however work on my main drive

I've been running Iris Xe on Linux for a while, while running into performance loss around 60-80% compared to Windows sometimes. Aside from two or three native games, I'm experiencing artifacts, unholy low FPS or... crashes on startup, like with Siberian Mayhem. what can I do to fix this entire situation? ready even to change distro or driver, if that's possible

So I've been having some performance issues. I've been distrohopping a lot. I've been using Ghost of Tsushima as a benchmark of a sort for the purposes of this port, although I've had the feeling for a while that other games had similar issues. On Kubuntu 22.04 and 23.10, if I use gamemoderun, performance is smooth and exactly what I expected. But I don't particularly like Ubuntu or apt, so I don't want to use this Kubuntu+gamemoderun combo. It should also be noted that the game became choppy again on Ubuntu 24.04.

If I'm on Kubuntu 22/23 but don't use gamemoderun, performance is fairly choppy. It feels like 30fps although my monitor reports a higher framerate. Maybe microstuttering? On any other distro, whether or not I use gamemoderun, performance is also choppy. About a similar choppiness. I'm not sure if it's exactly the same, it definitely similar. I've even tried the Ubuntu-based Tuxedo OS, and it also had choppiness. I've also tried Bazzite, Manjaro, and Garuda.

So yeah, somehow Kubuntu 22.04 and 23.10 seem to have some sort of magic that makes performance good when combined with gamemoderun. All other distros seem to have poor performance. Including Kubuntu 24. 04. It's almost like gamemoderun is refusing to work?

I have tried using my old kernel (6.5) which came installed with 23.10 before I upgraded to 24.04. Even then, there is that choppiness, so it doesn't seem like te kernel version I'm using is causing this. It also doesn't seem to be a KDE 6 thing, since with Ubuntu 24.04 I'm still on 5.27.11. I have a 13600KF, AMD 6900XT (stock AMD), 32GB RAM. On all of my tests, I've been using KDE Wayland.

So... anyone got an idea what it might be?

Edit: I've just set GPU and CPU manually to performance mode via CoreCTRL. That makes it smooth again. Now that I'm messing with this, I think it's actually something to do with my CPU frequency governor rather than my GPU.

Edit2: it seems that I don't even have to use gamemoderun as long as I set my CPU frequency governor to performance. I don't manage my GPU at all, I just let my OS handle that. I only set the CPU to performance. And voila, perfectly smooth frames. This is still a bandaid solution and I would rather depend on gamemoderun or on nothing at all than to manually fix it in CoreCTRL. So I still need a solution. But at least we can hone in on my CPU.

I got Xdefiant working by using the Ubisoft Connect launcher through Bottles, and the game launches but crashes every time I try to enter a match. Am I the only person experiencing this?

Langjährige Holarsianer aber auch wiederkehrende, sonst schweigende Mitleser da draußen, ein freundliches Hallo an beide Gruppen, wissen vielleicht, ich war in den vergangenen Jahren zuletzt mit einem mobilen Weggefährten in den Weiten der Linuxgaming-Welt unterwegs. Spätestens mit dem Artikel Sieben Jahre Linuxgaming und mehr mit dem TUXEDO Book XC1706 (Link) sollte das allgemein bekannt gewesen sein. Nun, was soll ich sagen, der Artikel schlug einige kleine Wellen, fand generell Anklang und wurde letztlich auch seitens Tuxedo Computers selbst wahrgenommen. Neben meinen, durchaus lobenden, Worten für das Notebook, nahm man dort ebenso wahr, dass ich mich, ohne Zeitdruck und Hetze, mit der Beschaffung neuerer Hardware beschäftigen wollte. Lange Rede kurz, es entsprang im Nachgang über einige Monate ein bisschen E-Mail PingPong, Vorlieben wurden erfragt, Sachstände ausgetauscht und im November 2023 fing mich ein großer deutscher Logistikkonzern an einem Samstagmorgen verschlafen an der Haustür ab, um mir ein großes Paket in die Hände zu drücken: Mein neuer Tuxedo Computer war da. Meldrians Ultralangzeittest Version 2.0 kann starten.

Wenn der Postmann 2x klingelt

Als ehemaliger nächtlicher Schnäppchenjäger auf einer großen internationalen Auktionsplattform durfte ich gute aber auch schlicht grauenhafte Erfahrungen sammeln, was den Erhalt von "Computergedöns" auf dem Postweg angeht. Tuxedo Computers hat was das angeht in meinen Augen geglänzt, weshalb ich gesondert darauf eingehen möchte. Ein zusätzlicher Karton, der des Chieftec-Gehäuses, diente als weitere Umverpackung, inkl. innenliegendem Schutz vor Erschütterung. Was auf den ersten Blick obsolet erscheint, macht auf den zweiten Blick durchaus Sinn. Grobe Stöße gegen die erste Schicht dringen so nicht zur zweiten durch. Wenn das Versandunternehmen das Paket nicht zufällig vom Kölner Dom pfeffert, sollte es intakt beim Kunden ankommen.
Im Paket befand sich, neben dem Computer (duh...), die Verpackung des verbauten Mainboards inkl. dem zum PC gehörenden Zubehör wie modulare Kabel des Netzteils, Adapter für den CPU-Lüfter, zusätzliche Schrauben, WLAN-Antennen, derlei eben, einzeln separiert in Tuxedo-Tüten. Neben diesen zum Gerät selbst gehörenden Zusätzen erreichten mich ebenso Dreingaben von Tuxedo Computers selbst. So befindet sich neben der englisch- und deutschsprachigen Infobroschüre, mit persönlichem "myTuxedo Code", auch ein "WebFAI-USB-Stick" über den ich, zugegebenermaßen, im ersten Moment gestolpert bin. Das "FAI" steht in dem Kontext für "Fully Automated Installation", wobei der Name Programm ist. Unter www.webfai.com erhält man weiterführende Informationen dazu. Zu viel versprechen möchte ich nicht aber es besteht zumindest eine gewisse Wahrscheinlichkeit, dass sich auch auf Holarse zukünftig einige Zeilen Text zu dem Thema finden werden.

So ein komplett zusammengebauter Computer leidet bei schlechter Verpackung nicht nur von außen beim Transport, auch im Inneren können sich gesteckte Elemente lösen, wenn es "ene mene Miste, rappelt in der Kiste". Um dem entgegen zu wirken befand sich im inneren des Würfels ein "Sealed Air Product Care" Luftkissen, welches alle Komponenten nach dem Auslösen sanft umschließt und so transportsicher macht. Das Lösen dieser Transportsicherung ist ein wenig fummelig, bedenkt man den einmaligen Aufwand und den aktiven Nutzen dahinter aber definitiv die Mühe wert.

Hardware

Mein TUXEDO Book XC1706 verrichtet weiterhin gute Dienste und steht mir als mobiler Begleiter tatkräftig für Urlaubsreisen und Ausflüge zur Verfügung. So richtete sich meine Aufmerksamkeit dieses Mal eher in Richtung eines Desktop-PCs. Wichtig war mir persönlich, Komponenten tauschen zu können, um möglichst spät einen komplett neuen PC erstehen zu müssen und zuvor nur einzelne Upgrades zur Verbesserung der Performance durchführen zu können.
Konkret gab es ein kompaktes "The Cube" Gehäuse von Chieftec. Dort wurde ein MSI MAG B760M MORTAR WIFI-Mainboard verpflanzt und passend zu diesem sexy Körperbau gab es einen Intel Core i7-12700T als Herzstück oben drauf. Für das Lang- und Kurzzeitgedächtnis sorgen die NVME 2TB-Variante einer "Samsung SSD 970 EVO Plus" sowie 2x16GB Arbeitsspeicher von Kingston. Damit sich das Linuxgaming zukünftig nicht nur theoretisch im Inneren des Computers abspielt sondern auch auf den beiden via Displayport angeschlossenen Monitoren landet, beherbergt "Der Würfel" zusätzlich zu den vom Prozessor angebotenen "Intel® UHD Graphics 770", welche auf den Displayport und HDMI-Anschluss des Mainboards zurückgreifen könnte, eine Sapphire AMD Radeon RX 6600 8GB. Damit zwischendurch nicht das Licht ausgeht, sorgt ein modulares XN073 | XP750MR9 mit 750 WATT und 80+ Gold Klasse für ausreichend Zufuhr, inkl. etwas Reserve.
Das verbaute Mainboard unterstützt laut Hersteller 4x256=1TB Arbeitspeicher, hier ist also auch für zukünftigen, in der Jetzt-Zeit noch absurd anmutenden Speicherbedarf Potenzial. Die CPU müsste allerdings ausgetauscht werden, unterstützt diese laut Datenblatt 'lediglich' 128GB. Das Mainboard mit seiner LGA1700 Halterung bietet zu diesem Zweck mitunter Support für Intel Prozessoren der 12ten, 13ten und 14ten Generation. Auch die Ausstattung u.a. mit Bluetooth 5.3, Wi-Fi 6E Wireless-LAN, 2,5Gbit LAN, 15x USB-Varianten (davon 13x am Gehäuse verfügbar; 2+3x 10Gbit, 1x 20Gbit) und integrierte 7.1 Soundausgabe versprechen eine gewisse Zukunftssicherheit, was das grüne Gewissen freut und beruhigt. Wenn es unbedingt sein muss und hier nur der Vollständigkeit genannt: Board und Prozessor werden von Windows 11 unterstützt.

Software

Tuxedo Computers schickte sich an, mir das firmeneigene Tuxedo OS (<-- Klick mich, ich bin ein Link und erkläre was das ist!) aufzuspielen. Nette Geste, bedenkt man, dass es von deren Seiten eigene Artikel gibt, welche sich mit Spielen unter TUXEDO-OS beschäftigen, dieser Bereich der Unterhaltungsindustrie also zum Teil mit zum Konzept gehört.
Der erste Systemstart durchläuft hierbei einen OEM-Prozess in dem letzte Einstellungen und Informationen (Benutzername, Kennwort, dergleichen) vom Anwender abgefragt werden, bevor es zur Sache geht.
Installiert war/ist genauer "Tuxedo OS 22.04", laut Plasma-systemmonitor bzw. Infozentrum, mit Kernel "6.5.0-10022-tuxedo" (mittlerweile laufend aktualisiert). Oberflächlich mutet das System wie ein angepasstes Ubuntu, auf dem es tatsächlich fußt, mit KDE-Oberfläche an. Unter der Haube halten aber auch eigene, von Tuxedo gepflegte Anpassungen und Softwarequellen Einzug in das System. So zeigt mir als Endanwender die Auflistung der Systemhardware via lshw -html > ~/System.html beispielsweise bei WLAN und xHCI Host Controller unter "vendor" oder "driverversion" den Zusatz "-tuxedo" an, was auf eigene Anpassungen durch die Firma für ihre Geräte schließen lässt. Das ist, so viel Offenheit muss sein, an der Stelle aber lediglich eine laienhafte Einschätzung meiner Wahrnehmung.

Nicht fehlen darf bei einem Tuxedo OS das firmeneigene Tuxedo Control Center, über das sich Leistungsprofile einstellen, Daten auslesen und gewisse Tools aufrufen lassen. Auf meinem Desktop-PC stehen nicht alle Funktionen der Software zur Verfügung. Wenig verwunderlich, findet das Tool doch normalerweise im Zusammenhang mit Notebooks, Tuxedo Computers Steckenpferd, Anwendung und Verbreitung. In meinem Fall gelingt kein Zugriff auf die Sensoren. Kein Problem, "sensors" liefert alle interessanten Werte des systems über ein Terminal. Auch die diversen Plugins und Addons für Desktop (KDE) und Toolbar (xfce) liefern die Werte zuverlässig.
Ein Interview von Holarse zum Thema Tuxedo OS haben wir erst vor wenigen Wochen hier bei uns veröffentlicht (Linki-Mc-Linkerson). Läuft alles nach Plan, wird es in einem zukünftigen Artikel nochmal etwas genauer um das Betriebssystem aus dem Hause Tuxedo Computers gehen bzw. darum, ob sich ein Beibehalten (oder gar explizites Beziehen aus dem Internet) des OS lohnt oder nicht. Der Arbeitstitel lautet, Stand jetzt, "Vorinstalliertes Tuxedo OS - Ein "do" oder "don't" für Linuxgamer?". Seid gespannt ... und geduldig ;) #WhenItsDone

Nutzung

Beim Schreiben dieser Zeilen im Spätfrühling 2024 werkelt der Tuxedo nun bereits buckelig ein halbes Jahr bei mir und für mich vor sich hin (nicht ununterbrochen, ich weiß wie manche von euch da draußen drauf sind, deswegen erwähne ich das explizit) und ich genieße, neben dem wahrnehmbaren Leistungsunterschied zum Vorgänger, solche Kleinigkeiten wie 27 Sekunden für einen Neustart doch sehr. Auch die Zeiten in denen ich bei zeitgleichem Start der Runde in 7 Days To Die oder Beyond all Reason stets als letzter dem Spiel beigetreben bin, da meine Maschine noch mit dem Ladevorgang beschäftigt war, sind mit der aktuelleren Hardware unterm Hintern Vergangenheit. Das sind aber im Vergleich alles nur Kleinigkeiten, nice to have wie der Angelsache sagt und schreibt.

Vor Staunen der Mund offen blieb mir, als ich mein erstes 15 Minuten HD Gameplay Video für Holarse kodiert hatte. Drei Minuten, Fünfzig Sekunden, kaum genug Zeit um auf die Toilette zu gehen. Zuvor war ein Klick auf "Kodieren" Garant für 20 - 30 Minuten Wartezeit und hochdrehende Lüfter bei ausgelasteter CPU. Thema Lüfter, vielleicht hier ganz passend, so wirklich zum Brüllen habe ich den Würfel bislang noch nicht bekommen. Sieht man von Benchmarks ab verhält er sich, auch beim Video kodieren und beim Spielen, angenehm leise und die Lüfter säuseln vor sich hin. Auch beim Einspielen von Systemupdates ist kein Aufschrei der Hardware zu vernehmen. "Tuxedo Tomte" installiert vollautomatisch ohne meine Interaktion Fixes im Hintergrund, hält mich darüber aber stets informiert. Systemseitig voreingestellt in Tuxedo OS war eine recht kurze Frist bis zum Eintritt in den Energiesparmodus, sodass mich ab und an nach kurzer Abwesenheit und Rückkehr zum Computer lediglich Monitore mit blinkender LED begrüßten. A ließ sich dies schnell wegkonfigurieren und B war die Kiste trotz Standby nach kurzem Mausruckler oder Tastendruck wieder betriebsbereit.
Vom Ästchen auf Stöckchen gesprungen noch etwas zum Stichwort LED, die Power-LED am Chieftec-Gehäuse, dafür kann Tuxedo Computers nichts, strahlt senkrecht Richtung Zimmerdecke, hat eine ordentliche Leuchtkraft und taucht mein Zimmer bei ausgeschalteter Zimmerbeleuchtung und herrschender Dunkelheit in einen sanften blauen Schein ("Es leuchtet blau!"). Muss man entweder mögen, den zugehörigen Stecker am Mainboard lösen oder stumpf einen kleinen Streifen Isolierband drüber kleben wenn es zu sehr stört.

Zukunftsmusik

Eigentlich bin ich euch an dieser Stelle noch Ergebnisse für einige Benchmarks schuldig aber der Artikel umfasst laut Libre Office bereits drei DIN A4 Seiten und ich weiß doch, dass ihr da draußen bereits ... Oh seht mal, ein Eichhörnchen!!
Daher an dieser Stelle lediglich kurz ein Teaser ohne viel Schnick Schnack: Superposition Benchmark schaffte auf 1080P "Extreme" 4197 Punkte, auf "Medium" 14195. Weitere Benchmark stehen noch auf der Todo-Liste sowie auch eine Art "Kampf der Generationen". Was es damit auf sich haben könnte liest man in hoffentlich in nicht allzu ferner Zukunft irgendwann hier auf Holarse.
Bedanken möchte ich mich bei Tuxedo Computers für den freundlichen Austausch und das zur Verfügung stellen des "Würfel" für ein weiteres Linuxgaming (und darüber hinaus) Langzeit-Testprojekt. Auch allen Leserinnen und Lesern, wer das hier liest ist toll, gilt mein Dank für das Durchhalten bis hier hin. Den mir zur Verfügung gestellten Spielewürfel gibt es in der Form nicht mehr käuflich bei Tuxedo zu erwerben doch fürchtet und banget nicht, der Nachfolger ist sowohl in einer AMD (Link!)- wie auch in einer Intel (Link!)-Variante verfügbar und kann fröhlich über den Webkonfigurator zusammengeklickt werden.

I have a bit of a conundrum. I just purchased my Neo G7 for $300 on Facebook which is an insane deal. I am trying to use it but I am running into some issues getting 4k 120 hz -144 hz working. You see, I use Linux as my main operating system, and since the HDMI Forum has denied AMD from using the HDMI 2.1 spec in their open-source Linux driver I have to use DisplayPort to reach 4k @ 120 hz.

The issue is that according to Samsung's website this monitor only supports DisplayPort 1.4, which can only go up to 4k @ 60 hz. Is there something I can do to make this work?

Hey folks, I have a quick question. I use GeForce Now in Chromium to play Fortnite but I have and had a quite bad experience. So my question is, what would be better? GeForce Now in Chromium or Boosteroid with their native Linux application. It would be cool if you have experience with one or two of this services. I use Linux Mint if that is important. (Sorry for the bad English, I‘m from Germany)
