Bazzite vs CachyOS

26. April 2024 - 01:09

Hi all!
I'm currently running CachyOS for its "cutting-edge of the cutting-edges" to test updates, and be up to date with Linux and how fast it's progressing with Gaming. Playing with VMs and some configurations. I really like it.

Bazzite came into my radar, and it looks awesome, it's pretty stable from what I've seen and it just works, it's not the latest of the latests in terms of testing but it's pretty up to date.

What do you think about it?

What distro would you choose between those two?

My plan is to ditch Windows for good when Linux is stable to run most of the things I need without issues (thx nvidia)

Steam doesnt open in linux mint 21.3

25. April 2024 - 23:23

A few months ago I started using linux, Steam had been working perfectly until today, I wanted to connect my dualshock 4 but it was giving me problems. One of the solutions I found was to install the steam-devices from terminal. I closed steam completely and ran the command sudo apt install steam-devices But when I start steam again I just get a window that says "An error occurred while starting the application". I checked the command that runs the desktop shortcut and runs the steam application from the path /usr/bin/steam But checking the folder it seems that now there is no such file. Does anyone know if there is any way to fix it? Or at least some way to uninstall it completely to reinstall it again?

I want to build a new pc with Linux gaming in mind

25. April 2024 - 23:12

Hello folks! I want to build me a new gaming pc. I have used Linux before and love it on the steam deck. So maybe you guys could help me out with a hot or not list for parts. I know that NVIDIA is not perfect for Linux and I am all down for a red only build. I want to play 2k and max/ultra settings. Thanks in advance.

Offload game rendering with prime to the AMD gpu, with the display plugged into an Nvidia card

25. April 2024 - 22:28

I’ve been eying a pretty good deal for a used 6700 xt, the only problem is that the video ports don’t work. I’ve seen a number of people using amd cards for rendering the desktop and nvidia cards for games, but I’m in an opposite situation, my only card right now is nvidia with proprietary drivers. I’m a little confused as to what command I should use to make the amd card render games but have the display plugged into the Nvidia card. Do I use_ _NV_PRIME_RENDER_OFFLOAD or DRI_PRIME?

Keyboard Input Lag In WoW

25. April 2024 - 22:26

I've been trying to run WoW with various Proton versions in Lutris. All those I've tried still have the input problem. I came across a post that suggested using versions 4.16 and lower, so I downloaded an old proton-ge from github. Unfortunately, I can't install the game using it, and running it on an existing installation does not work.

I'm running Nobara 39.

Best "console UI" distro with Nvidia support and controller navigation.

25. April 2024 - 22:24

I originally envisioned a console-style UI that ran steam and could be navigated with a controller. Thought it would be simple. I don't think I've ever been more wrong.

Started with an RX 570 on Chimera. I really wanted to like it but it was kind of janky. I had to log into Steam again every time I started it up. So I tried steam OS and the user interface was good but the gpu just wasn't powerful enough to play what I wanted. If you want to know what Helldivers 2 looks like if it was played on a PS2 then give it a try. Pop it in your '95 Civic and give it a "Pimp My Ride" treatment.

So I found a used 2070 Super for a good price and put that in only to learn that Nvidia and Steam OS don't play nice. Neither do Nvidia and Chimera OS.

Look. I'm self-aware. I know my limitations. I know that I'm not emotionally stable enough to mess with psychedelics so I stay away from them. Turns out I'm not stable enough to mess with this project either but I'm in the rabbit hole now and I need to follow it through to the end. So please help a guy out and I promise I will never dream of a simple afternoon computer project ever again.

What I envision is a setup that boots directly into a simple UI that I can navigate with a controller to play Steam games. It needs to work with my Nvidia 2070S. I do not want to buy a Steam Deck though I can appreciate why that would seem like solution. I want something I can upgrade down the line.

If nothing else works I might install Windows Enterprise and have it open Steam big picture mode at the start. I'd really rather not use Windows if I can help it. I was hoping for something a lot "cleaner".

Before I try every other Linux I can find, I would really appreciate some advice from people who have lost sleep, hair, relationships, and the fight against substance abuse fighting this battle before me.

Switching GPU vendors (AMD => NVIDIA) - how to fix Steam?

25. April 2024 - 22:24

I got a hand-me-down GTX 1080 that I'd like to use, previously having an AMD card and the AMD variant of Pop!_OS installed.

Just swapping the card in mostly worked. Changes were detected on first reboot and after the second the desktop worked normally. I installed the default drivers via sudo ubuntu-drivers install and e.g., nvidia-smi showed things seemingly working.

Unfortunately something seems to be in disconnect because Steam games (Palworld, Path of Exile, Terraria, Tabletop Simulator) don't seem to be using the GPU based on

  1. not being listed in nvidia-smi output
  2. horrific performance
  3. enormous CPU usage as reported by top
  4. MESA_VK_DEVICE_SELECT=list vulkaninfo listing a llvmpipe device before the Nvidia card (which is listed twice for whatever reason)

I've tried a couple of workarounds found in other threads by updating the launch parameters of the steam games to include, I think, every possible combination of the following env vars

  • DXVK_FILTER_DEVICE_NAME="NVIDIA GeForce GTX 1080" (provided by vulkaninfo)
  • DRI_PRIME=10de:1b80 (provided by vulkaninfo)
  • MESA_VK_DEVICE_SELECT=10de:1b80

I've also removed (renamed) the files /usr/share/vulkan/icd.d/lvp_icd*.json. This had the effect of causing Path of Exile to crash on startup (invalid vector subscript) but so far nothing has caused the applications to run with any performance or show up in nvidia-smi output in the "Processes" section.

Any idea on what to try next? Thank you in advance!

Configurations and Settings for Games thru Multiple Applications

25. April 2024 - 21:32

I am looking for a resource/site for configurations/settings for the multiple options we have for linux, ie Lutris, Heroic Launcher, Wine, Bottles, Steam, PoL....etc

We have protondb but is geared for Steam, WineHQ for native wine, Lutris has some configurations for installing some games/applications, PoL has some scripts but is there a site that advises configurations for all of them at once?

So if you have lets say, ARK SE for both Epic and Steam, you can go to this resource and see what configuration have known to work for either or, instead of hunt thru the interwebs to find anything mentioned for Epic on Linux thru whichever option and ProtonDB for Steam.

Or is this something that does not exist?

I think a centralized resource would be massively beneficial to the Linux community

DS4 controller not auto connecting

25. April 2024 - 21:17

I'm switching from Windows and have a problem with a controller: autoconnect doesn't work reliably (pressing the PS button). Usually it connects first, the LED on one controller turns white (should be blue) and then disconnects after a few seconds.

I have tried this:

  1. trusting/pairing with bluetoothctl -> works until reboot

  2. Repair -> same result

  3. Reboot -> same result

  4. Plug the Bluetooth adapter into a different slot -> same result

Is there anything else I can try to fix my problem? Thanks

Any way to get RDR2 to show PS-button controllers rather than Xbox?

25. April 2024 - 20:52

No biggie and I know this might be a bit too much to ask for since it's rather amazing the game runs so well it does. But it doesn't hurt to ask.

So I currently play RDR2 by first running Rockstar Games Launcher from Steam with Proton and from there launch RDR2. Works like a charm so far. I use a Playstation Dualshock 4 controller connected via bluetooth. However in game it's detected as an Xbox controller showing Xbox buttons for all actions. Not a big deal but it's slightly inconvenient, especially in stressful situations, since I've never owned an Xbox and keep forgetting which button is which (A, B, X, Y). The PS buttons (X, circle, square and triangle) however are second nature to me. Is there any way to get RDR2 to show the PS controllers?

Issue installing Mod Organizer 2 for Skyrim, Please help!

25. April 2024 - 20:27

Initially, it worked perfectly since a year ago when I was on Skyrim v1.6.640. Recently [2 days ago] updated to v1.6.1170 and it didn't launch anymore, it would just crash on start-up, so I uninstalled it. i can Install it back up but when I launch it, I states that certain paths cannot be found (these paths should not exist in the first place). First it was the MO2 exe file not being found (the path it seeks isn't the one I set during install) , I managed to fix that, but now it tells me about "Special" path which doesn't exist and never should exist in the first place.

Is this a Wine/Proton issue or is it the MO2 installer? I'm using the Rockerbacon install by the way. And I'm using Nobara 37 distro.

Steam games constantly crash and freeze.

25. April 2024 - 18:35

Hi guys, Ive been having this problem where I would play a game on steam and it would randomly just crash, for example I would be playing a game such as Pummel party and the game would just randomly close, It got to the point where I stopped playing games altogether on my system, and just used it for work and videos and such. Recently I've tried playing Helldivers 2 but every-time I play and put in around 30min on it the whole screen just freezes, and this is not only hell divers but many other games that are considered more graphically intense.

I would just play the game and the game would randomly freeze , but I could still hear sounds, I cant even alt tab from it so it seems like my whole system is freezing, at that point I would have to just force shut down my computer. I thought switching to an operating system that is more suited to gaming would maybe help me, so I switched to Nobara but the problem persisted even after I installed the latest Nvidia drivers for my system, and did so much changes that I found online. Last night it happened again and I was just so pissed so I decided to ask people about it. Im not sure if anyone else has experienced this and fixed it. do you guys have any suggestions on how I can trouble shoot this? here are my specs:

Operating System: Nobara Linux 39

KDE Plasma Version: 6.0.4

KDE Frameworks Version: 6.1.0

Qt Version: 6.6.2

Kernel Version: 6.8.7-200.fsync.fc39.x86_64 (64-bit)

Graphics Platform: Wayland

Processors: 12 × AMD Ryzen 5 2600 Six-Core Processor

Memory: 15.6 GiB of RAM

Graphics Processor: NVIDIA GeForce GTX 1660/PCIe/SSE2

Manufacturer: Gigabyte Technology Co., Ltd.

Product Name: B450M DS3H

NVIDIA Driver Version: 550.67

I've Tried multiple fixes, Ive changed wayland into Xorg and the problem still persisted, ive updated my NVIDIA drivers, tried many configurations in proton and finally just used protong-GE but the problem still persists, I've checked my drives with SMART and they seem ok. I also have some steam logs of when i was playing, they are quite massive and I'm not sure how to post them here, but the lines before and during the crash go like this:

577.967:0124:026c:info:vkd3d-proton:vkd3d_pipeline_library_disk_thread_main: Pipeline cache marked dirty. And just repeats until I restart. If anyone has any ideas I will be super grateful!

Need help with Fifa/Origin/EA-App trouble

25. April 2024 - 18:28

So, I have this old PC running Mint I want to play some couchy games like football on. I have Fifa 21, doesn't work on that one because of specs. So I ended up buying a used CD of Fifa 13 which takes significantly lower specs and I read somewhere runs supposedly well on wine according to some old post from somewhere on the cheapsies. Turns out, there is a problem: it requires Origin.

I can install Origin either from the CD or also from Lutris, but all that does is want to update itself to EA App, the new thing replacing it. If I update Origin to EA App, shit stops working entirely. If I install EA App directly (which so far has only worked for me with Proton Experimental), my Fifa CD wants to install origin even if I have its successor actively running on the same wineprefix. There seems to be no winning on this one. I can't even try adding it to my account on my newer PC that has windows because it lacks a fucking CD drive - so for now, I basically seem to have scammed myself by buying that.

I also found some advice to run Origin in Windows Vista mode, no such luck because it's unsupported in the last version.

Has anyone got any advice how to actually install something like that?

Nintendo Joy-Con doesn't connect to Arch Linux

25. April 2024 - 18:27

Today I have tried to connect my Nintendo joy-cons to an Arch Linux running Hyprland (Wayland).

I have installed hid-nintendo-dkms and joycond-git then I have tried to connect it via bluetooth. When I pair it with my laptop I get the "Connected" notification, however sync animation on the joy-con doesn't disappear and it doesn't detect any input.

I have tried to install the libraries mentioned above through git and make them myself but it didn't solve the issue.

The problem is the same as this but I didn't find any answers provided.

P.S. Idk if its a good description, but I can provide any specific info if needed.
