A spooky sale for the scariest thing of all… bills (Linux-friendly indie game)

27. Oktober 2025 - 18:59

Ever looked at your subscription list and screamed?

That’s basically the idea behind my little game Pay Your Bills Simulator (and Cry) a silly clicker where you fight off endless bills before your time runs out.

It runs smoothly on Linux, and since it’s Halloween… it’s 50% off

Itch: https://bites-drop.itch.io/payyourbills

The scariest part? You can win... somehow. Probably. Maybe.

Visual and Audio latency comparison. Windows vs Linux

27. Oktober 2025 - 18:53

Over the past week I’ve installed Linux Mint and PikaOS and measured the audio and visual latency between them on Counter Strike 2.

-

cs2 options:

Mouse Sensitibity = 8.0

Frame limit: 143

Frame gen: off

-

Setup:

Primary monitor: AOC g2590px 144hz with GSYNC

I also have a second monitor

MSI B450M BAZOOKA

Ryzen 2600

NVIDIA RTX 2070

Focusrite Scarlett Solo Gen3

-

For the tests I enter the map NUKE in practice mode with all bot kicked.

All tests are done with NVIDIA GSYNC and REFLEX enabled.

-

VISUAL LATENCY

Methodology

I’ve used a Raspeberry pico + phototransistor + arduino ide, to turn the camera around 180º very fast. So fast that it takes 1 frame for the camera to turn around.

My phototransistor is placed in the middle of the screen and I’m testing during the night with all my light turned off.

I’ve entered the commands :

sv_cheats 1

noclip

m_yaw 0.85

setpos_exact 1263.798340 -1391.295166 -648.911316;setang_exact 0.000000 -150.913010 0.000000

With the setpos comand I teleport to a location with a bright room in front and a dark room behind. I get 143 FPS at that location in all tests. If you need an in depth explanation of this methodology, you can find it at youtube channels: ApertureGrille and cs2kitchen

All measurements are expressed in milliseconds

Lutris Permanent performance drop bug

27. Oktober 2025 - 18:47

In two separate occasions I have encountered sudden performance drop that stayed like that since.

Clair Obscur: Expedition 33 Runner: Umu proton 9 20 hours of flawless performance but then upon random area transition BAM. fps dropped from, I don’t know, buttery smooth to unplayable state. And it stayed like that ever since.

RDR2 Runner: Default Wine version 10 hours in. Game run flawless. But when I loaded up a previous save because I accumulated killed a guy, suddenly a huge performance drop. The same as Clair obscur. Restarted the game, lutris, and the PC. No matter it is now permanent.

On both cases there is nothing changed in-game settings are just the same as before, lutris config is also the same.

My PC Ryzen 7 5800X RX 6900XT I was able to play both games the settings all Maxed out before this happened. On 1440p 180hz display. Both are installed on an SSD

Linux Gaming FPS drop across many games.

27. Oktober 2025 - 18:43

I had stopped playing games for a couple of days (10 maybe) and now my FPS are extremely low for my specs.
I used to get around 300-350 FPS while playing CS2 but now they have dropped to an average of 120 FPS.
The same happened in War Thunder where i now get a AVG of 80 FPS, previously it was around 200. The graphics settings haven't changed. It isn't a temperature issue either.

I felt like an update caused this and reverted to older kernel versions with no success. The same games run perfectly fine on Windows (dual boot).

Has this happened to anyone else?

Performance of Dolphin on XFCE vs Plasma on a Celeron N4020

27. Oktober 2025 - 18:22

Hi! I’ve tested Dolphin EMULATOR on Mint and Tumbleweed, both running XFCE. The experience has been average, but when I tried it on Debian 13 Plasma (under Wayland), it just ran better. Honestly, I don’t understand whether it’s X11’s fault, the distributions themselves, or something else, because it’s clear that Plasma uses more resources than XFCE. So, how could I make Dolphin run as well on XFCE as it does on Plasma?

DLSS suddenly crashes No Man’s Sky on Linux (Fedora 42, RTX 3060 Ti, Proton-GE 10-22/Expermental/9)

27. Oktober 2025 - 18:21

Hey everyone,

I’ve been playing No Man’s Sky on Linux for a long time, and DLSS has always worked perfectly — until about a week ago.
Now, the game instantly white-screens and crashes as soon as DLSS is enabled and a save is loaded, even on a completely clean reinstall.
I've extensively tried to debug this with the help of our dear ChatGPT but to no avail.
Here's a report of what I tried and some additional context.

🧩 System Setup
  • OS: Fedora 42 KDE
  • GPU: RTX 3060 Ti (LHR)
  • Driver: NVIDIA 580.xx (latest Fedora repo)
  • Proton: Proton-GE 10-22 (latest) — also tested Proton Experimental and Proton 9
  • Game version: Latest Steam build as of Oct 2025
  • DLSS/Reflex: DLSS ON → crash after save load; FSR works fine
🧪 What I’ve Tried

Clean setup attempts:

  • Deleted the entire prefix: ~/.local/share/Steam/steamapps/compatdata/275850/
  • Reinstalled the game from scratch (letting shaders compile).
  • Tried default Proton, Proton-GE 10-22, and Proton Experimental.
  • Updated system and drivers fully.

Launch parameters I’ve tested:

PROTON_ENABLE_NVAPI=1 PROTON_ENABLE_NGX_UPDATER=0 %command%

Also tested enabling the updater and all the known Proton DLSS flags.

Logs show:

  • DLSS loads normally:Loaded nvngx_dlss.dll, nvngx_dlssg.dll, sl.common.dll Streamline:: Init Success!
  • Then:EXCEPTION_ACCESS_VIOLATION at sl.common.dll right after loading the save → instant crash.

Tried multiple DLSS/Streamline combos:

  • Game’s default DLSS/Streamline.
  • Latest DLSS (3.10.0 / 3.10.4) via Proton NGX updater.
  • Cyberpunk 2077’s DLSS/Streamline DLLs.
  • Swapped only DLSS, only Streamline, both — no change.
  • Disabled Frame Generation (nvngx_dlssg.dll and sl.dlss_g.dll) — still crashes.
🧠 Things That Work
  • Disabling DLSS = stable.
  • AMD FSR = stable.
  • DLSS works fine in other games (Cyberpunk 2077, Control, etc.) on the same driver + Proton-GE.
🧾 Relevant Log Snippet Streamline:: Init Success! ... err:seh:dispatch_exception code=c0000005 (EXCEPTION_ACCESS_VIOLATION) rip=00006FFFF4CDCCE9 (sl.common.dll) ❓ What I’m Trying to Figure Out
  • Has anyone else seen DLSS start crashing recently (mid–late October 2025)?
  • Did Hello Games silently update Streamline/DLSS integration recently?
  • Is this a regression in Proton GE or NVIDIA 580+ drivers?

It feels like Streamline 310.x integration in NMS is suddenly incompatible with Proton’s NVAPI/NGX layer — but I can’t find any other reports online.

If anyone with a 30-series NVIDIA GPU and Fedora (or Arch) could test enabling DLSS in No Man’s Sky on current Proton-GE 10-22, that’d be a huge help.

🧷 Bonus Info
  • Path to DLSS cache: ~/.local/share/Steam/steamapps/compatdata/275850/pfx/drive_c/ProgramData/NVIDIA/NGX/models/ → empty unless NGX updater is on.
  • Native DLSS file in-game: .../No Man's Sky/Binaries/nvngx_dlss.dll
  • Even forcing older DLSS 2.5.1 doesn’t fix it.
💬 TL;DR

DLSS worked fine before → now causes instant white-screen crash in NMS on latest Proton-GE & NVIDIA drivers, across clean installs. Logs show a sl.common.dll access violation. Looking for confirmation or fixes.
I'm desperate for help :)

[Linux | Proton] Total War: Warhammer II – cannot launch the game via Proton (“Sorry, something went wrong”)

27. Oktober 2025 - 17:47

Hey everyone,

I’m facing some issues running Total War: Warhammer II on Linux, both on the native version and through Proton, and I wanted to describe my experience in detail to maybe help others or get some advice.

At first, on the native Linux version, I kept getting a Segmentation Fault error. I wasn’t sure how to fix it, so I decided to try running the game via Proton instead.

I’ve faced a similar issue before with Total War: Three Kingdoms . I’m pretty sure it’s called optimus — basically the setup where the display runs through the integrated GPU (AMD in my case), and the dedicated GPU (NVIDIA RTX 3060) kicks in only when needed.

This configuration usually works fine for me on other games through Proton, but here it doesn’t.

When I switched to Proton, the game launched into the Windows launcher, but once I got in-game, I had constant 15–20 FPS, even though the settings claimed I was using the RTX GPU — which clearly wasn’t true. The option to switch GPUs wasn’t available in the settings either.

After spending hours troubleshooting, I went back to the native version and discovered that I could switch between GPUs there. So, I tried launching the game first with the AMD GPU, then closed it, switched back to the RTX, and launched again — and somehow it worked! I was able to play the tutorial and a few turns without crashes.

Performance-wise, it was mostly okay (60 FPS in campaign), though zooming into battles caused drops to around 30 FPS. I’m using VSync since my external monitor is 60 Hz anyway (dual setup with my laptop display).

However, after reading ProtonDB reports, I saw that many people eventually face instability, missing turns, or crashes on the native version, so I wanted to get the Proton version working for stability’s sake.

Unfortunately, every time I try to launch it through Proton now, I get a message:

“Sorry, something went wrong”

Then it redirects me to a Sega support link saying the game couldn’t re-validate my copy. That makes me think it might be related to Denuvo, or some DRM validation issue.

For the record, I bought the game from a legit CD-key website I found through IsThereAnyDeal — not something shady like G2A. The site is officially listed and has worked fine for me in the past.

My setup:

  • Laptop: HP Victus 16
  • CPU: AMD Ryzen 5 5600H with Radeon Graphics
  • GPU: NVIDIA GeForce RTX 3060 Laptop GPU
  • Distro: Kubuntu 24.04
  • Desktop: KDE Plasma 5.27.12 (Wayland)
  • Kernel: 6.14.0-33-generic
  • Driver: 580.95.05

Has anyone else faced this kind of issue with the “Sorry, something went wrong” launcher error under Proton?
Could this be related to DRM validation (Denuvo) or the Optimus setup on laptops?

Any ideas or workarounds would be much appreciated.

Edit:
I forgot to mention that I’ve tried launching the game with every possible Proton version — from 7.0 and up, including GloriousEggroll Proton 10-3 — but the issue persists across all of them.

Learn Linux?

27. Oktober 2025 - 17:34

About 1-2x a year I get fed up with ms and their bs and try to switch to Linux but ultimate I run into some issue where I don’t know enough to even google properly, I get anxiety, and then I just fresh install windows.

I’ve learned a ton, and those points I can maneuver around when I need, but I was hoping there was a series of videos or blogs that you would recommend to learn.

For instance, I understand pretty well I think, how drivers interact with windows and how to fix problems when they come up, and how to disable, remove, and install them. I wouldn’t know the first thing about it in Linux, as I have a vague idea that that stuff is in the kernel.

Same thing with how displays/gpus work in windows. But how stuff like mesa, Wayland, gamescope, and proton work is beyond me.

Everything I know about windows I’ve learned over 35 years of experience. I would like to speed that process up a little.

I want to move on from KDE, what are some other options for a gamer ?

27. Oktober 2025 - 17:33

It's not that I don't like it, in fact KDE was the first DE I ever used when I installed linux many years ago, but I'm honestly tired the KDE look, can you guys help me decide where to go next ? I kinda wanna try hyperland but I don't know if my games will preform the same as in KDE, I play mostly Warframe and PoE2 on arch, and use vscode for work.

Do You Feel Like Linux Has Finally Surpassed Windows and macOS?

27. Oktober 2025 - 17:31

I’m surprised more people don’t notice one of Linux’s biggest strengths, it never stops improving. Every year, it gains new features, better compatibility, more technology, and more polished software. Even when you compare Linux to just one year earlier, there’s always so much progress.

It feels like Linux has already crossed the Rubicon. The days of trying to catch up with Windows/macOS are long gone, that was two or three years ago. Now, it’s simply better, and it keeps getting better.

From the kernel to desktop environments like KDE and GNOME, from gaming compatibility to tools like Wine, Wayland, OBS, Krita, GIMP, DaVinci Resolve, Blender, Audacity, LibreOffice, Firefox, Inkscape, GNU, Godot, and even GPU drivers from AMD, NVIDIA, and Intel. Everything just keeps advancing.

There hasn’t been a single year when Linux stood still. Linux is just insane now.

At this point, there are only a few things left to iron out or implement and they’re already being worked on.

AMDVLK has been discontinued in favor of RADV.

27. Oktober 2025 - 17:30

Source: AMDVLK open-source project is discontinued

Brief. - AMD is focusing on a single codebase that benefits from the entire open-source community. - AMD GPU users should replace lib32-amdvlk with lib32-vulkan-radeon.

Discussion. - Do you think the community needs more "unified" forces like these?

Connecting to Windows hosted Minecraft LAN server from Ubuntu 24.04

27. Oktober 2025 - 16:39

I recently installed Ubuntu 24.04 on my 12-year-old laptop to try out Linux and see if it improves performance. I’m not very experienced with Linux.

I want to connect to a Minecraft server hosted on my Windows 11 PC. Both machines have the same Minecraft version. My laptop is on Wi-Fi, and my PC is on a wired connection.

When I enter the server IP and port in Minecraft, the server appears, but joining gives me an “Invalid Session (restart the game and the launcher)” error. Restarting doesn’t help...

A few months ago there was windows 10 on my laptop, and it worked perfectly, even with forge and 1 mod.

Another mentionable thing is that I have only one original minecraft account, so I used Tlauncher on my laptop (it worked when there was windows 10 on it). I tried using Tlauncher on both, but same error.

I also allowed java.exe to bypass firewall.

Does anyone know how to fix the Invalid Session error/get LAN servers working between Windows and Linux?

If you have KDE 6.5 you def. want to into enabling "Overlay Planes" for better battery life and more responsive gaming while media is playing

27. Oktober 2025 - 16:09

TLDR : set KWIN_USE_OVERLAYS=1 as env var and restart if you have Plasma 6.5

Since most of us have a stream / video on the second monitor while gaming, KDE 6.5 brought a nice new feature.

It basically makes it much more efficient where in certain scenarios the GPU doesn't even have to work anymore. Even with HD decoding enabled.

Which obv. does wonders for Laptops, but also works great in GPU limited games. For me personally on a NVidia desktop the difference is very noticable in GPU limited games and since i have a power counter thingy in my wall plug i can see that i save about 5-10% power when having a game running on my main monitor that maxes the GPU with a hardware accelerated video playing on my second monitor.

Would highly recommend trying it out.
