Gamescope on Ubuntu (24.04.1)

16. November 2024 - 21:39

Greetings.

I'm rather sorry to be back so soon, but to be fair with you, I'm rather dumb in many aspects.

Since I've had trouble getting my games (imported to Steam/Proton) to run fullscreen with (launch settings)

WINE_FULLSCREEN_FSR=1 WINE_FULLSCREEN_FSR_STRENGTH=0 WINE_FULLSCREEN_FSR_CUSTOM_MODE=1920x1080 %command%

I've thought about installing Gamescope, as advised, and managed to discover this guide.
Unfortunately, the described way resulted in wayland-server dependency related error.

I then attempted to use the advised

git reset 5e8fddf --hard; git clean -fxd; git submodule update --init --force --recursive

, but the command prompts

fatal: not a git repository (or any of the parent directories): .git

I apologise, but I'm rather unfamiliar with git commands and while the Help command does list a number of keywords to choose from, I'm quite unsure as to how to structure them in order to avoid this error!

As to how my games (one as an example) show-up with the FSR command, I've read somewhere it may be due to the games running in a (borderless) window, however, there is no option to change between window/fullscreen in the settings of those games. If I do not manage to install Gamescope after all, would there be any way of resolving the matter?

Garry's Mod Crashing on Void Linux - Buffer Overflow During Loading

16. November 2024 - 21:34

I'm running Void Linux with an NVIDIA GPU and experiencing a persistent crash with Garry's Mod. The game crashes consistently during the initial blue loading screen with a buffer overflow error, despite having the latest GModCEFCodecFix installed.

The frustrating part is that the game was working perfectly fine a few weeks ago. Here's what I've tried so far:

- Downgrading NVIDIA drivers

- Downgrading various system packages

- Editing game configs

- Adjusting system memory limits (ulimit)

- Clean reinstalls of GMod

- Different launch options including -nofontcache and -noaasampledfont

- Clearing shader and font caches

- Running the game inside Distrobox Ubuntu

- Running the game inside Conty

As a server owner, having to switch between Windows and Linux just to help players is becoming a major inconvenience.

System Info:

- Void Linux (up to date)

- NVIDIA GPU with driver version 550.127.05

Crash Log: https://pastebin.com/raw/tTvQc7Aj

Any help would be greatly appreciated. Let me know if you need any additional information.

How can I find out which additional packages a Flatpak such as Lutris can use?

16. November 2024 - 21:13

Hi,

I've successfully installed Lutris as a Flatpak and run a fair number of games on it. I wanted to see the FPS in some newer games, so I installed Mangohud and gave Lutris access to the mangohud config file.

to get this to work, it also requires the installation of an additional Flatpak package which Lutris can use:

  • runtime/org.freedesktop.Platform.VulkanLayer.MangoHud/x86_64/23.08

However, there are also other versions, such as 24.08 (which doesn't work with the current version of Lutris) and older versions.

Does someone know a way to query a Flatpak installation to see which additional packages it can use, so I don't have to do trial and error with the versions of those packages?

edit: the command "flatpak info <app-name> -e" to show extensions doesn't work. It only shows the packages the installation of this flatpak will pull in; it doesn't show optional packages such as the VulkanLayer.MangoHud one, which is needed to talk to the system-installed MangoHud.

(I would have posted this in the Flatpak subreddit, but that one is 100 times smaller than this one, with a post every 4 days or so. I hope/think the Linux-Gaming subreddit may be more successful in finding an answer.)

Dragon Age Veilguard long shader verification

16. November 2024 - 19:33

I'm launching the game through lutris and EA app. The game verify shaders every time I open it and it takes 5-10 min to do so. How can I skip this? Using fedora kde with 2080 rtx gpu if that matters.

PoE with Overwolf on Linux?

16. November 2024 - 18:10

Hi, does anybody know if it's possible to run PoE (Path of Exile) with Overwolf's PoE Overlay on Linux?

I'm getting kerberos error when trying to install Overwolf with Bottles, with Lutris (not using a lutris.net installer) I could install Overwolf but it crashes when trying to download PoE Overlay. I run PoE with Steam normally.

How’s the Experience and Performance of Deadlock on Linux?

16. November 2024 - 16:45

Hi everyone! 👋

I’m curious about the experience of those who’ve tested Deadlock on Linux. The game is still in development, but it seems to have great competitive potential.

  • Has anyone managed to run it on Linux?
  • How’s the overall performance? Does it run smoothly or have any issues?
  • Were there any challenges with drivers or compatibility?
  • DXVK or Vulkan?

I’d love to hear your feedback! 😊

AMDGPU faild with *ERROR* ring gfx_0.0.0 timeout

16. November 2024 - 16:11

I started playing this game named New World. It runs mostly fine on my system through steams proton. However, there is this behaviour that I encounter for the first time on my amd gaming desktop. Where the display freezes out of nowhere while playing the game and it won't recover unless I reboot (or I think it also recovers after logging out and logging back in through GDM).

The journalctl logs report that:

Nov 16 15:29:35 amd-desktop-nixos kernel: [drm:amdgpu_job_timedout [amdgpu]] *ERROR* ring gfx_0.0.0 timeout, but soft recovered

Nov 16 15:29:46 amd-desktop-nixos kernel: [drm:amdgpu_job_timedout [amdgpu]] *ERROR* ring gfx_0.0.0 timeout, but soft recovered

Nov 16 15:29:56 amd-desktop-nixos kernel: [drm:amdgpu_job_timedout [amdgpu]] *ERROR* ring gfx_0.0.0 timeout, signaled seq=19276878, emitted seq=19276881

Nov 16 15:29:56 amd-desktop-nixos kernel: [drm:amdgpu_job_timedout [amdgpu]] *ERROR* Process information: process NewWorld.exe pid 62920 thread dxvk-submit pid 63104

it always produces the same error on journalctl with this issue. I tried googling the error messages and found out multiple issues/posts with the same descriptions. Some of the comments suggest setting the kernel parameter amdgpu.ppfeaturemask=0xfffd7fff and I tried that, I believe with this parameter set, the frequency of the issue happening has lowered but I still experience the issue time to time, which is very frustrating.

I only experience the bug in this game, not on other games I play (but I suspect this might be the most demanding one), and weirdly I played the game a year ago as well and did not encounter such issues. Maybe it is a software regression on my system, but wanted to ask here if anyone has experienced similar issues and found a solution.

My system info is as follows;

OS: NixOS 24.05.20240709.249fbde (Uakari) x86_64

Kernel: Linux 6.6.37

WM: Sway (Wayland), (but also experienced the issue in i3 X11)

CPU: AMD Ryzen 5 5600 (12) @ 3.50 GHz

GPU: AMD Radeon RX 6700 XT

07:00.0 VGA compatible controller: Advanced Micro Devices, Inc. [AMD/ATI] Navi 22 [Radeon RX 6700/6700 XT/6750 XT / 6800M/6850M XT] (rev c5)

Huge FPS drop in linux

16. November 2024 - 15:23

Recently i just decided to try linux, Linux mint XFCE to be exact, and it all going okay, untill i downloaded minecraft, i saw HUGE fps drop in linux, now ik my pc specs arent the problem, even tho i have shitty pc, but it doesnt matter because in windows 10, I used to get 400 fps, in 1.8.9 with optifine, and in linux its around 100 and 70 (1.8.9) in some areas, now i used to lock my fps to like 120 in windows, and anything above 60 fps was fine for me, But in linux it just doesnt feel like 100 fps at all, its not smooth, idk how to explain this but its just not 60 fps it stutters even tho there arent any drops, kinda like when you record on a shitty pc, matter fact its actually than when i recorded my gameplay in windows and yes i tried to tweak my settings as much as possible, But its just isnt working, This is odd because i hear people say that they get a huge fps boost in linux, so idk, I also went to Driver manager in settings, and it says no driver needs to be updated, im wondering is there any app like driver booster for linux? cause if this doesnt workout i might have to switch back to windows.

GTA Online & BattlEye

16. November 2024 - 14:47

Contrary to the well spun myth that GTA Online doesn't work on Linux since the BattlEye update because Rockstar forgot to tick a box (if you believe that I have bridge in Liberty City to sell you), BattlEye does in fact work.

https://wiki.archlinux.org/title/Steam/Game-specific_troubleshooting#Grand_Theft_Auto_V

For those who are unfamiliar, there are various fixes posted online that include setting the PROTON_BATTLEYE_RUNTIME environment variable. This fix alone is not enough for most systems, you must also disable split lock mitigation. Some users may have done this for other games already, and maybe Valve has disabled this on SteamDeck, hence the conflicting reports on ProtonDB.

I discovered this by checking the kernel log. That this article garnered 3.2k upvotes, made the front page of Reddit and informed countless gamer news articles, before anyone even checked kernel logs, is a disgrace to the Linux community. You are responsible for the maintenance of your own system.

Hope this helps some disgruntled fans, and just in time for the December update!

No GPU acceleration with flatpak steam L:(

16. November 2024 - 13:19

Hi,

I'm looking for help to get my GPU running with steam games on windows.

My issue is, that all games are using only CPU:

https://preview.redd.it/f91zq9iy591e1.png?width=347&format=png&auto=webp&s=b40839ec3f0df0b8040f9d972763d60c58c8ae71

It is the same for all games that I've tested, none are using GPU. So I assume it's my config and not the game.

My environment:

steam is installed with flatpak (same situation if installed directly):

my host detects the card and uses the same driver version

according to glx info the nvidia is detected on host and in flatpak

over 1 Billion of Potential

16. November 2024 - 12:53

Steam account is over 1 billion

microsoft windows runs on 1.6 billion of active devices.

If Valve successfully release a Linux distro with Gaming focused, then its pretty much game over for microsoft.

I finally setup my linux for gaming. Steam+proton but also wine: for old games like NFS of golden era black box...

16. November 2024 - 11:26

Quick aparte: the only reason to me to have Windows - my addiction to LoL... But I'm looking for stopping LoL, even if it's not for now or near future yet.

I'm using intensively Linux since about october 2023, mainly because I started studies in computer science. But my Linux experience starts way-way earlier, around mid-2010s and since ever from I've been very attentive to gaming on Linux. That way I was hyped when proton came out and was kinda inpatient to test it out.

Fast-forward to this night, I've decided to have my few recent games (Snowrunner and Satisfactory, to be exactly; Warframe and few others there and there; NFS and few others outside of Steam) running smoothly on Linux.

Outside-Steam-Games were kinda fast to work out: I've already the tech with wine (I had to install MS office suite 2003 few weeks ago) - I just need the installation executable, that I run with `wine /path/to/exe`, then either reboot or `alt + f2` followed by `r` (I'm using ubuntu 22.04LTS) - it will restart GUI of the system, as I understood, and implement the new created shortcuts for installed exe.

Meanwhile, Steam-games were pain in ass... I've been on it already for few months, but either it was hard drive error (dual-boot and fast-startup, iykyk, but also few others inconveniences by my personal habits), or the games would just not start at all, or even if they start - they run at 10-11 fps at best (on gaming setup). Here's the list of problems that I had, sorted by when I solved them (the first are the first to be solved):
1. Using `Nouveau` as NVIDIA driver is bad or even impossible for gaming. I suspect it to be the origin of not-launching-games in Steam.

  1. `Additional Drivers` application in Ubuntu's menu tells the recommended one driver for my NVIDIA is installed, yet `nvidia-smi` was either non-installed or not detecting NVIDIA driver.

  2. `sudo apt install nvidia-driver-550` is NOT the driver to install: you missing the dkms feature.

  3. `sudo apt install nvidia-driver-550 dkms` + `sudo dkms install -m nvidia -v 550` + reboot and you are likely good to go.

  4. Optional: either start the steam via `DRI_PRIME=1 steam` or add to in-steam launcher parameters `DRI_PRIME=1 %command%`.

I hope I was clear enough for a guy that would check that post in 1 or 10 years (it totally can be me!). I used a lot, i mean: A LOT - chatGPT. You can just to prompt your issue and then just send to him what terminal gave you. But beware of this - he will likely forgor what was the initial prompt! Please UNDERSTAND what are you doing! Or just cast `rm -rf ./` (seriously, don't send that command).
