New to Linux gaming

02. September 2025 - 17:46

Hello friends! I come here to ask for help and your opinions on what Distro i should use.

After a long time of thinking ive decided that i finally want to ditch Windows 10 and use Linux instead. But im not exactly sure what would be the best option for me.

I play a lot of games and I do a lot of software development so I would really need something that would allow me to do both without much trouble.

For those who are interested, the languages i use in software dev are C#, Typescript and C++

The games i play the most are Minecraft & Unturned, other than these 2 the rest are just random Unity Engine games.

Edit: For those of you who are wondering, im not new to Linux, ive used Fedora and Ubuntu Servers a lot in the past for self hosting.

simpleoverlay - OpenGL performance overlay for Linux and *BSD written in C

02. September 2025 - 17:36

Just wanted to share what I was working on recently, hopefully someone finds it useful.

simpleoverlay has basically no build-time dependencies, except for a C compiler and make (both GNU make and bmake works).

It works on Linux, FreeBSD, OpenBSD and NetBSD, but I'm planning on supporting more platforms.

Controller with the Following Specs?

02. September 2025 - 17:27

I currently use an Xbox One controller and honestly it’s been pretty good for me. Aside from a few connection drops that required reconnecting the dongle, I’ve got no complaints. After switching from Win10 to Bazzite, I’ve actually had fewer issues. I mostly just want to try something new.

I’m looking for an upgrade/alternative to the XB1 controller that checks the following boxes:

  • Replaceable Batteries (either AA or easily accessible rechargeable). This is the top consideration because I have had much more luck with replaceable batteries than rechargeable lithiums for longevity.

  • Hall Effect sticks and triggers (I just want to try them out)

  • asymmetrical stick layout (like Xbox)

  • Works OOTB wirelessly with Linux.

  • low lag

Are there any options out there for this? I like 8bitDo for retro controllers (M30, NGCD) but never tried their models with analog sticks. I also hear great things about Gulikit but they do not seem to offer replaceable batteries.

Any way to play GOW: Reloaded on linux if we only have it via gamepass?

02. September 2025 - 16:55

Hi! We have an Xbox as well as a gaming PC that my son uses (with windows 11). My son and I started the new Gears coop together (I'm on xbox, he's on the PC). But I would LOVE to redo the PC so it uses linux instead of windows.

The only problem is, I can't figure out after some searching, if it's possible to install Gears of War: Reloaded from our gamepass account so he can still play coop with me.

Does anyone know?

  • Added support for NVIDIA Smooth Motion on GeForce RTX 40 Series GPUs.
  • Fixed a bug that caused /sys/class/drm/.../enabled to always report "disabled" for NVIDIA GPU connectors.

Need some game recommendations that can run on a potato!

02. September 2025 - 16:34

Just gave my GPU to the shop to be RMA'd, and it'll be a while til i get word of what's next, probably a month, and i don't have an integrated graphics on my computer so i'm stuck with a potato laptop for the time being.

It's a Lenovo G500 (ancient, i know), with Linux Mint Cinnamon on it. Runs great for internet and youtube, but i wanna game til i wait as well.

Post your game recommendations that you think would run on this laptop, something pixelated, easy to run, no matter the genre, just so i can fire up a game and unwind for a while while i wait for them to either fix my GPU or give me a new one.

I'm not sure about the actual specs of this. Neofetch says "Intel Pentium 2020M @ 2.400 with Intel 3rd Gen Core Processor graphics" but the online specs from googling say "Intel Core i5 3120M (3rd Gen) with AMD Radeon HD8750", but in any case, it's enough to run pixelart or very light potato games.

Thanks!

Vrchat issue - video player active causes extreme head wobble effect

02. September 2025 - 16:33

Hey everyone,

So I managed to get vrchat working with alvr to my quest 3s, everything works great, and I even got the video player to work. However, whenever a video starts playing, my vision starts to wobble uncontrollably! When I stop the video, it stops happening!

It seems like it may be network related. Perhaps when the video is streaming, it's bottlenecking something.. I've already had to switch my DNS to couldflare for everything else to respond without taking 30 seconds to complete a network request such as joining an instance, etc.

My ALVR bitrate is set at 50MB/s. I have a dedicated router just for connecting my headset to my PC, so no problem there.

I am currently running:

----------------

System:

Kernel: 6.8.0-79-generic arch: x86_64 bits: 64 compiler: gcc v: 13.3.0 Linux Mint 22.1 Xia base: Ubuntu 24.04 noble

MB:

TMPG B550 GAMING PLUS (MS-7C56) v: 1.0

CPU:

Ryzen 7 5800X

Graphics:

Radeon RX 6700

----------------

For Vrchat, I am using ge-proton-rtsp.

I have tried switching to hotfix, experimental, beta, and the latest version of proton, nothing changes anything noticeable.

Happy to give any more info if necessary, this is really driving me nuts. I just want to be free of the stupid 100GB windows partition just for vrchat.

Video attached shows it happening. Obviously, it's not as noticeable watching in non-vr, but you can see it. It's absolutely nauseating in vr.

Optimal V-Sync/G-Sync configuration?

02. September 2025 - 16:15

On Windows the general advice seems to be globally enabling v-sync via the nvidia control panel, leaving v-sync disabled in game and then capping fps a few frames below your refresh rate with RTSS or reflex.

I'm aware I can just cap the game framerate with mangohud or other launch options but how should I be configuring v-sync? Do I enable it in game or disable it and attempt to enforce something like FIFO or Immediate through mangohud launch options?

I am thinking about switching to Nobara after using Bazzite for 1 week as my first linux experience (Details below)

02. September 2025 - 16:12

I've watched Ancient Gameplays' Windows vs Linux Gaming Benchmark Retest he said he didn't do extra optimization/tricks after clean OS installs and I saw that Bazzite losing more performance than others when it comes to ray tracing. All linux distros was using Mesa Git 25.2 (Probably 25.2.0) during the production of the video. You can find it in video's comments.
But the bazzite image i am on has Mesa Git 25.2.1-4 so do you think performance difference in ray tracing is still the same?

Keep in mind i am completely newbie in linux. Should I do the switch and find out myself? I can't decide whether I should commit to it or not.

I am on 4K resolution and 9070 XT. (He doesn't feature 4K tests in the video)

Thank you for your answers.

Help: Mod Not Working on Death Stranding (Fedora 42 Linux)

02. September 2025 - 15:22

Hey Linux Gamers, I’m stuck getting the "Walking Man" music player mod (Nexus Mods ID 93, Windows-only with dxgi.dll and walkingman.ini) to work on Death Stranding Director’s Cut on Fedora 42. The game runs, but the mod doesn’t show up. Need a Linux workaround! Here’s what I’ve tried:

  • Setup: Running via Steam, thought it was native but Proton was auto-used (compatdata/1850570/ exists).
  • Mod Install: Extracted Walking Man-93-1-0-5-1754405662.zip, added dxgi.dll and walkingman.ini to ~/.steam/steam/steamapps/common/Death Stranding/.
  • Proton Attempts: Used Proton Experimental with --use-dxgi launch option, got a Windows 10 1809 error. Removed mod, game ran without forcing compatibility.
  • Wine Attempts: Set up a 32-bit Wine prefix (~/.wine-deathstranding), tried vcrun2019 with winetricks, but it hung at wineserver -w. Reset by deleting prefix and ~/.cache/winetricks/.
  • Current State: Game launches with --use-dxgi, no crashes, but no music player. Folder has dxgi.dll, walkingman.ini.

Any workaround to make this Windows mod work on Linux? Tried Proton/Wine tweaks but hit walls. Thanks!

Lossless scaling+ steam os+ caribbean games

02. September 2025 - 14:30

As the title says friends, I've seen videos and still nothing, I'm new to the topic (Linux) and I would like to play Caribbean games on my steam deck running lossless scaling. I can now run the ones from the steam store (except for those that have a launcher like borderlands 2) I am a newbie to the subject of commands but I have already added 2 commands, I don't even know how to separate one from the other, returning to the topic, is there a way to run the duck in games that are not stam (Caribbean or epic)

Distro suggestions ?

02. September 2025 - 13:46

Recently I built my dream gaming pc, and while I love it to death, I probably only use it two hours a week due to work and responsibilities.

I debloated windows on install and get strong performance from my pov, but turned off updates, because I knew Microsoft would eventually fuck something up. Well, they did with their SSD killer update, luckily I dodged it because I had the foresight. However, this has made me consider switching to Linux. I’m looking for suggestions for distros to try if I’m solely using this pc to game, and only playing indies or single player graphical intensive titles.

Specs:

CPU: 9800x3D GPU: 9070xt RAM: 32gb DDR5 6000 MB: STRIX X870E-E

Ubisoft Connect is a nightmare on Linux

02. September 2025 - 13:46

I have a SteamOS machine running ChimeraOS in my living room, and it works great. I spent 4 hours last weekend trying to launch Immortals Fenyx Rising only to realize I had to manually set the MTU size so that Ubisoft Connect could sync my save file.

I tried doing the same last night on my other linux-based computed (running PopOS) and, well... nothing. I tried different MTU values, tried enabling MTU discoverability, nothing works. The game launches from Steam, Ubisoft Connect pops up and tries to synchronize save files, only to timeout after a few minutes.

Gaming on Linux has been a godsent, and 9 times out of 10, if not more, it works brilliantly thanks to Proton and/or SteamOS. But man, Ubisoft Connect is just a nightmare to deal with.

Has anyone else made Ubisoft Connect work w/ Linux? Is there something I should check or tweak? I'd love a few pointers.

Star rail on Linux and save files

02. September 2025 - 13:36

I'm a windows user that currently switching to Linux

I'm probably will use Mint, and just going around asking question and checking if things that I like work there.

But I can't find any normal responses about 2 things:

  1. Does Star Rail work on Linux on its own, or I need that "honkers railway launcher" that listed on lustis site. And if it needed, it's safe to play through it? My account can get banned or not?
  2. Is there any normal instruction to transferring game saves from the "AppData" folders to linux?

Does anyone here game in 4K?

02. September 2025 - 13:12

What are your specs if so? I have an i5 10400 + 9070 XT and thinking of going 4K but I'm afraid I'd need to turn down graphics settings in AAA games

I know benchmarks exist but I want to hear some real world experiences
