How to force steam always to start with a scaled UI?

25. März 2024 - 04:03

Hi!

On OpenSuse Tumbleweed with KDE Plasma 6 I use Lutris/Steam for some games...
Since Steam doesn't respect my desktop scaling of 150% I use a start parameter for the steam application launcher: -forcedesktopscaling 2

With that Steam starts with a double sized UI (which looks well oversized and out of place and is uncannily clunky but at least I can read it!).

Now if I start a game directly Steam starts without the upscale unless I add the same start parameter to the specific application launcher...

Is there a way to set this globally so I do not have to edit every single application launcher for every Steam game in the start menu?

Thx, p.

Visual bugs when downsampling Team Fortress 2

25. März 2024 - 03:33

I am using gamescope to downsample in tf2, but for some reason there is a translucent copy of my screen in the top right corner, and I have no idea what causes this.

I understand if the only solution is to stop downsampling.

Why Steam updates games so often?

25. März 2024 - 03:27

This is literally the second time GTA IV updates today in two hours, and while it is shaders now most times it doesn't state what it is, so is always shaders or it could be something else?

Dragons Dogma 2 Graphics Reset Upon Restart

25. März 2024 - 03:20

Hello all! I am playing on Fedora Linux 39 (Bazzite) and every time I restart Dragons Dogma 2 it pops up with a message "Your graphics settings have been adjusted to match your system setup" and resets all my graphics to low. I have a 7900xtx and a 7800x3d, so it should not be doing that. I am also using Proton GE 9-2.

I lament that I currently cannot get any pictures or anything until Denuvo graciously lets me play my game that I paid $70 USD for, as I got locked out until later tomorrow due to Proton swapping.

Thanks for any help!

Edit: Typos

Steam Font Size on Fedora 39

25. März 2024 - 03:09

I downloaded steam (and Runelite) but the fonts/UI were so small that I couldn't read anything without putting my face against my monitor.

I looked on Steam forums and looked around on Reddit... couldn't find a solution outside of editing config files.

Then, I went to "Configure Display Settings" and changed Legacy Applications (X11) to "Scale by system" instead of "Apply scaling themselves" and it completely solved my problem.

I am sure most of y'all already know this and maybe I am just some noob (only been on Linux for about a week now bc I hate Microsoft). But I thought I would just toss it in here anyway.

It might look the same via screenshot, but in reality it makes it ACTUALLY legible instead of having to strain my eyes to see anything. This also helped solve my problem with runelite.

My question: Is this going to cause me any problems down the road by switching this setting?

Before the change:

Small font - barely legible

After change:

Some crashes while playing "The guild II: Pirates of the european seas"

25. März 2024 - 01:26

I have some crashes with "the guild 2: Pirates of the european seas". The fist one happened if my char would marry in a church, the secound if I want to save my game.
The game closed without any error massage.

I play on a Ubuntu 22.04 with Lutris using wine 9.0.
I also tried wine-ge-8-25-x86_64 and with GE-Proton 7-22 but with this versions the ingame menu don't react.
I deactivated "Esync" "Fsync" and "Easy Anti-Cheat".

EDIT:
I just started the game using the terminal. This is the log:

144+ fps doesn't feel as smooth as Windows?

25. März 2024 - 00:52

I have been dualbooting linux mint and windows. This doesn't seem to occur in normal usage, it's smooth and feels like its running at 180hz(which is what my monitor's refreshrate is)

But running games it seems like its not actually running at 144+ fps. This is happening in pretty much all games. The performance I'm getting is very similar to Windows. Some examples are Lies of P and The Finals. Both of these games I'm running at 1440p max settings around 200fps but it just seems to be smoother on Windows. I saw someone having a similar issue and they managed to resolve it but they were running an AMD GPU.

I am running the newest version of Linux Mint, vSync is off on all games, my GPU is an RTX 4090 and the drivers I'm running are the recommended ones from driver manager. Any help would be greatly appreciated!

Should I buy tekken 8 for PS5 or PC (Linux)?

25. März 2024 - 00:28

Using Nobara 39.

Usually I tend to play online games on the PC for obvious reasons (I don't have to pay to play online). So I'm thinking in buying tekken 8 and I'd like to gather more info in how the game is behaving on Linux.

I've seen the game is shown as "Gold" on ProtonDB, meaning it needs a bit of tinkering for it to run well on Linux.

My question is, how well does it hold up online in regards to FPS and MS? I know that on PS5 it's guaranteed to work perfectly out the box, but I'd rather avoid paying for ps plus tbh. I'm leaning to play more competitively in ranked.

What's your experience with Linux supported games?

24. März 2024 - 22:56

I've played on Linux for a few years now, and have played 7 games with Linux support.

  • Left 4 Dead 2: no problems.
  • Counter-Strike 2: no problems.
  • RimWorld: no problems.
  • Factorio: runs well, but has a tearing/VSync issue.
  • Europa Universalis IV: runs well on Proton, don't remember why I decided to not use the Linux version.
  • Stellaris: crashed on launch, but was still playable. Celestial bodies weren't visible. Had to use Proton.
  • Crusader Kings III: constantly crashes and freezes my computer, same issue with Proton.

Kubuntu 23.10, AMD Ryzen 3600 and 5700XT.

Is it just Paradox that has bad Linux support? What's your experience?

Black screen when trying to boot to Ubuntu and Mint

24. März 2024 - 21:16

I am trying to install Linux on my new build. I have fired it up and I can see all of my hardware correctly in the bios. I have tried installing Ubuntu 20.04, 22.04, and Mint. Each time, I start booting from the USB and get to the list of options like "Try or Install Ubuntu", "Run Ubuntu (Safe Graphics)", etc. I tried normal and safe graphics for each of the distros that I mentioned. Each time I click run, from here it is nothing but a black screen no matter how long I wait.

- I did open up the GRUB cli on one of the Ubuntu distro menus, that seemed to be working but it had the same result when I tired to boot from USB.

- I tried plugging the monitor into the mobo instead of the graphics card in case it was a driver issue causing the black screen.

- Accessories seem to lose power after I try to boot as my keyboard and mouse lose their lighting.

My build parts in case they are relevant:
CPU: AMD RYZEN 7 7700X

Mobo: MSI PRO B650-P WIFI ATX
Hard drive: NVME M2 drive

Any advice on how to get my PC to boot from the Linux USB would be greatly appreciated!

Linux gaming via steam with proton vs gog/lutris/wine

24. März 2024 - 20:56

I’ve been thinking about this for awhile… is there any real difference between gaming on steam with proton and buying a game on gog with lutris/wine? Can you actually play games for gog without being online? Do you think that gog and lutris are more “free”? Maybe I’m overthinking this. Thoughts?

Reliable Distro

24. März 2024 - 20:43

What distro in your opinion would you rely on the most for daily use such as banking, online bill paying, and doing website development. Having a hard time deciding which to keep either fedora or LMDE 6

Just wanting to chat and know everyone’s opinion please

Thank you

Recommend me a DE with good fractional scaling (4k 27” panel) and works on xorg/x11(nvidia gpu).

24. März 2024 - 20:34

Hello linux_gaming community. I am trying to make a switch to linux from windows, a very slow one tbvh. I am currently back to using windows 11 again but i was very happy with Nobara OS. Both gnome and KDE were fine (gnome felt more polished so far).

I need to have fractional scaling for my 27” 4k panel or things are not readable. Wayland sessions have fractional scaling enabled, but since i have an NVIDIA GPU there is weird flickering while playing games or in some apps and browsers. This is why i wish to use xorg/x11 for time being till nvidia releases new driver, which is 15th may.

I tried using gnome on xorg but was forced to use 200% scaling and everything looked big. Is there any DE which can do both?
