Game freezes on a single frame, and only alt-tabbing works
Hello! As the title says, some of my games freeze on a single frame until I alt-tab, and when I come back to the game it's like it wasn't frozen at all and moved on to the next frame, but it's still frozen until I alt-tab again. It seems to be a tendency with full-screen games, and I'd like to know how to fix it since I've ran into this problem with games like Celeste, Fallout New Vegas, etc.
My specs are: OS: Lubuntu 22.04.5 CPU: AMD Athlon 64 x2 Dual 4200+ GPU: NVIDIA GeForce GT 640 And I've got 4 gb of ram, really old computer I know but I just want to fix this problem.

A D3D11-compatible GPU (feature level 11.0, shader Model 5.0) is required to run the engine.
Just switched to Linux (ubuntu) few hours ago, been trying to play a game from steam but it failed to launch every time. I have put PROTON_LOG=1 %command% on launch option and got pic related. Anyone know what I should do? Specs on second image.

Palworld: Black Screen → Crash with Proton (RTX 3060 Ti, i9-12900K, NVIDIA 535/550/575) – used to work, now it doesn’t
Hey folks,
I’m losing my mind here and hoping someone can either confirm my suspicion or point out something I missed.
Setup:
- Linux Mint 22.1 (Cinnamon)
- CPU: Intel i9-12900K
- GPU: NVIDIA RTX 3060 Ti
- Drivers tested: 535, 550, 575 (open & proprietary)
- Proton versions tested: 5.13-6, 8.x GE, 9.0-4, Experimental
What happens:
- With Proton 5.13-6 → the game launches but immediately complains: “Microsoft Visual C++ Runtime required”. (this could be fixed with winetricks vcrun2019)
- With Proton 8.x / 9.x / Experimental → the game shows a black screen for <1 second, then instantly crashes.
- Running with PROTON_LOG=1 %command% shows at the end: Failed to initialize Easy Anti-Cheat
- Vulkan is working fine (vulkaninfo shows NVIDIA 575.64.03). Shader cache & compatdata wiped multiple times.
What I’ve tried:
- Deleted shadercache & compatdata
- Installed vcrun2019 into the prefix via winetricks
- Tested launch options: -dx12, -force-d3d11, WINEDLLOVERRIDES="dxgi=n" %command%
- Tried PROTON_NO_EAC=1 %command% → still instant crash
My suspicion:
This isn’t my setup — everything else runs fine — but Palworld recently started strictly enforcing Easy Anti-Cheat. It used to work on my older PC + Proton setup, but now it crashes instantly before anything renders.
Question:
- Has anyone here managed to get Palworld running recently under Linux (NVIDIA)?
- Is there any known workaround (e.g. launching Singleplayer without EAC), or is it just dead on Linux until the devs explicitly enable EAC for Proton?
Thanks in advance 🙏

Is this normal with compatibility layers? Re-downloading entire game.
I recently kept Total war warhammer 3 for download. After the download i set the compatibility layer to proton. in the setting i checked the force compatibility. Now it says "updating" and looks like re-downloading the entire game?
Should i not have checked that "Force compatibility" and just played the game?

Fedora Steam games do not launch after some updates
Hello guys i have some problems with Fedora KDE.
After some updates on Fedora my PC acts like in this guy post. https://www.reddit.com/r/linux_gaming/s/GQVBdY08JZ
The issue for me this is the second time happening. First time i bricked the OS so i have to reinstall everything.
I reinstalled the OS, installed drivers and apps. After the last updates a few days ago the problem came back. I press play on steam and games do not start. I tried with every Proton version including ProtonGE, nothing works same results.
Does anybody know what i have to do to avoid this behavior? I kind of do not want to remain behind with updates for security reasons...

Steam minimizes games and opens windows saying "shutting down steam" and claiming I need controller updates and
I have a problem that stumps me mostly because it's so weird I wouldn't know how to start troubleshooting it. When I play some games, most recently Space Marine 2, the game will minimize and the following windows will open:
I have used a ps5 controller on this linux install before, but I updated the firmware of those (in windows, ugh) when these problems showed up. I figured the problem might be because steam sees my keyboard (Mountain Everest Max) as a controller, so I tried running with a generic keyboard, all to no avail. It seems to me all the updates to steam for linux because of steam integration in steam OS should be the cause of these problems, but I can see no way to tell steam I am just launching these games from my desktop.
I use CachyOS, and drivers etc are up to date as far as I aware.
Does anyone have an inkling on how to fix this?

Witcher 3 keeps freezing
Hi! Witcher 3 keeps freezing randomly. It does not matter what i am doing in the game. The frequency is also random. I tried changing every setting: from 1080p to 4k, from low to high, fsr on and off, fps limiter on and off etc. Nothing works. I have steady 60fps tho. Also tried different proton versions on steam. I don't know how totroubleshoot this. Anyone got any idea?
My setup is: fedora 42 kde, rx6800, 80gb ram ddr4, r7 3800x

Looking for a Step-by-Step Tutorial for Modding GOG/Epic Games on Linux
Hi everyone,
I'm a returning Linux user trying to get game mods to work, and I could really use some help. I'm sorry if this topic is covered in the FAQ; the link seems to be broken.
I'm stuck on two specific issues:
- RogueTech for Battletech (GOG): The base game works fine, and the RogueTech launcher successfully installs the mod. However, when I try to start RogueTech, it just launches the unmodded base game instead of loading Modtek.
- Vortex Manager: I can get it to install, but it doesn't seem to find any of my games. Also, Firefox doesn't recognize how to send the nxm-links to it, so I can't download the mod collections. I've tried installing it in both Bottles and Heroic, and even tried installing a Windows version of Firefox in the same prefix, but no luck.
Since most of my games are from GOG and Epic, I'm looking for a step-by-step, non-Steam tutorial for modding on Linux.
I'm running CachyOS. Any advice or pointers in the right direction would be greatly appreciated!
Thanks in advance!

New to Linux (Bazzite KDE NVIDIA 5070)
Windows user since win98, I recently decided to switch to Linux after several years of reflection and testing on a laptop with Optimus (The worst thing that exists for Linux without a mux switch). The choice of distributions was not easy because there are plenty of them and the support for the components is not always plug and play. Using it via my Steam Deck made me want to abandon Windows. I wanted to test Opensuse following different subs that I consulted but the support for my RTX5070 did not allow me to install it easily. So I chose Bazzite Gnome. I love Gnome but I encountered problems when launching games in stretched 4/3 resolution (CS2) and artifacts when sharing a Discord screen. So I opted for the KDE version (less pretty and simplistic) but less buggy in use. For the moment I have not encountered any particular problems and my games run as well or better than under Windows. I understand that Linux will not be a general public solution because of Windows' monopoly at the application level. Nothing is planned for Linux, and tinkering will scare the average user. Windows is an OS where apps are designed to run on it. Linux is a great system but when something doesn't work we often say that it's a problem with the OS while under Windows we don't blame the OS but the application in question. Otherwise I love Linux and I join the party to denounce the monopoly of Windows on our machines with all the MS services which harm performance and privacy. I might try Cachy in the future but arch scares me a little with what I've heard about bricking its system being more common than Bazzite. I hope that Anti-cheats will work on Linux and that developers will be forced to open their doors to other OSes in the future to avoid MS becoming the monopoly of a previously "free" system which is closing day by day like Android and the internet in general is doing at the moment. What I advise to those like me who are hesitant to switch to Linux, make a backup of your important files, and try! What people say on Reddit with their problem etc and regarding NVIDIA is not a generality. It's a question of use and desire. Try it and if it doesn't work as it should there is always a solution by consulting the web. Take 2 or 3 distros with a copy of Windows on a Ventoy USB key, that way you will always have a way to reinstall a working OS if everything doesn't go as planned.

Nier: Automata frametime anomaly
Linux Mint 22.1 Cinnamon Laptop
Xorg
CPU: quad core Intel Core i5-9300H (-MT MCP-) speed/min/max: 2200/800/4100 MHz
Kernel: 6.8.0-79-generic x86_64
Procs: 331 Shell: Bash inxi: 3.3.34
GTX 1650, NVIDIA-SMI 570.1812 x 8 gb RAM 2666
Ran using lutris (Runner Ge-proton-10-12 with default lutris system settings)
Frametime spikes horribly every 5-7 seconds as is shown on video. No resources are used at their limit, Power Throttling has nothing to do with it. This is happening both when cpu and gpu are undervolted to oblivion (as they are in video) or with no undervolt alltogether. This anomaly is present even at the game's main menu after you start it, it is not connected with location/chars or anything. It feels like either the game itself is faulty or there is something wrong about how it is translated that does this.
My game is modded, i installed Special K (Far) plugin that controls framerate (and it doeos to a degree, smoothing the frametime, but it does not fix the problem). Due to obs recording frametime is a bit shaky overall, but without it it is extremely smooth with exception of these sudden spikes.

Has anyone experienced this issue on Linux?
The reason why I ask is because I've been experiencing this exact same issue as described by JayZ.
It started occurring maybe about a year ago and happens maybe once every few months.
Basically, the PC will randomly shut down and then I have to do a full power cycle in order for my NVME to show up in the BIOS. TBH I thought my PSU was starting to go but now I'm not so sure.
Here's my current firmware:
john@John-PC:~$ sudo smartctl -a /dev/nvme0n1p6 | grep "Firmware Version"
Firmware Version: 624361WD

Is my drive bricked
So I used hdparm to erase the drive before installing arch Linux using archinstall. Then while in archinstall, when selecting install, it threw an i/o error.
I was on fedora before attempting to install arch, and everything went unresponsive in fedora. My game crashed, and steam got stuck. So I clicked shutdown but it just froze on shutting down steam. I hard rebooted because the terminal wasn't working, neither the power off button.
When the system booted to the encryption prompt, I entered my encryption password but systemd couldn't load cryptsetup. It just failed.
So I just decided to install arch, I wanted to try it anyway. At first, it worked, but either my Internet connection failed (I'm sure it did because it couldn't connect to the servers) or the SSD just failed.
So I fixed my Internet, selected my SSD in archinstall and set everything up, and when the installer attempted to format, it threw the i/o error. Is it recoverable?

Flickering Models and Shadows In CS 2 Using Ubuntu LTS
I had not tried CS 2 on this install of Ubuntu until today only to find it doing this. I had played it before on different distros without issue. I am running Ubuntu 24.04.3 LTS. I am using an AMD Ryzen 7 5800X and AMD RX 6800XT. The issue follows into the game on all the models. It's not as bad on low and medium settings, but it's still there. Any help is greatly appreciated! Also, if it helps, I ran the command "lspci -k | grep -EA3 'VGA|3D|Display'" after searching for a command to find my gpu driver and it gave me "Kernel driver in use: amdgpu" and "Kernel modules: amdgpu"

PoE2 Micro Stutter with WASD?
Anyone else getting micro stutters when using WASD in PoE2? Just outside ClearFell. Watching my FPS, if I press any WASD key my framerate drops from 120 to 80 for a second or 2 then jumps back up to 120. Frame time goes from 8ms to 13ms. really weird. Doesn't seem to be tied to graphics settings. Tried using Proton Experimental...same behavior.
