How can I run TF2 on full screen with lower resolution?

10. Mai 2024 - 17:28

My screen is 1980x1080 but I want to run TF2 on 1280x720 so TF2 tuns better. But this shit breaks when I try to set it up in video settings, then game launches either in small window that I don't want to or I get full screen but game doesn't register where my cursor actually is and thinks it's in completely different place

Do I need to change the resolution of my screen before launching game

Question about vanguard

10. Mai 2024 - 17:21

Hello, I hope this is appropriate to this sub.

I have Fedora as my main OS for work, I was wondering if I installed windows (dual boot) for Riot Games on a secondary SSD that's empty, would that risk my Fedora installation? My personal files and whatnot?

Helldivers 2 won't launch in full-screen

10. Mai 2024 - 17:19

Hello

I recently acquired Helldivers 2 and launched it for the first time this morning to check if it worked. All was good, I was able to complete the tutorial and there was no issue.

I messed with the settings a bit and changed the window mode from borderless to full-screen, which I am 95% sure is the reason why it won't launch anymore.

I have tried using the -noborder launch option but it didn't help.

Anyone knows how I can fix this?

Thanks

Call of Duty on linux?

10. Mai 2024 - 15:47

I've never played Code, even when I was using Windows, I was only interested in story games, but now, after two months of Linux, I have a desire to play Warzone, but the problem is that Valve's Windows emulation program on Linux cannot run COD because of the anti-cheat programs that do not support Linux.

Can lutris run COD on it?

(If you look at the fragments, you will see that the new code fragments exactly from COD 16 will not be able to run on Linux because of the anti-cheat programs).

But CS2 is causing issues, im getting this error message every time i try to start matchmaking . I have tried to verify files multiple times, tried different versions of proton and restarted my laptop/steam also but nothing worked. I was able to play just once yesterday for 1-2hrs but not since then.

Perceived FPS doesn't match reported FPS

10. Mai 2024 - 11:49

For about as long as I’ve been using Plasma, I’ve experienced a mismatch between what games (or overlays like Mangohud) report fullscreen game FPS as being versus what it actually appears to be if VSync is disabled (VRR does not appear to resolve the issue). I’ve seen this in multiple native and proton games, but probably the most prevalent would be War Thunder, where a reported ~350+ FPS can at times look as low as 20-30 FPS.

I’m not actually certain that this is a visual stutter as much as it might be out-of-order frames, since it visually appears to jump backwards if paying close enough attention. I also don’t really know what debugging information I can provide from Plasma itself, but the issue is one I’ve experienced with a few different configurations:

My old system, 2080 + 9700k on Arch w/ Plasma 5.24 up until Plasma 5.27 My new system, 7950X3D + 7900XTX on Arch w/ Plasma 5.27 and Plasma 6. The same new system, on Fedora 40 w/ Plasma 6… but not Fedora 39 with Plasma 5.27.

Additionally, the issue only occurs in Plasma Wayland sessions, and does not seem to occur in Plasma X11 or any other DE/WM running wayland (tested Hyprland and Gnome Wayland). The fact that Fedora 39 did not experience any issues while Arch, running the same Plasma 5.27, did, makes me think this might be something core to Wayland itself that was more up-to-date on Arch for a long time than it was on Fedora. There's very little else running on these systems - practically vanilla besides Steam to rule out any external factors. Doesn't matter whether steam is running native or in Flatpak, either.

Enabling VSync does seem to fix the issue at the cost of quite noticeable input latency, but when it is enabled the system seems much more sensitive to actual FPS drops so I'd really like to avoid this.

I've posted about this to the KDE discussion board as well as various smaller communities about this, but the only real input I've had is about Nvidia, which doesn't help me. I can't really find much that seems to match it online, either.

Curious if anyone here has had any similar experiences (particularly with AMD), and if I'm potentially just horrid at using search engines?

What's preventing cheaters from emulating vanguard?

10. Mai 2024 - 11:09

So as most of you probably know League of legends recently added Vanguard which completely broke compatibility with linux. As far as I understand it would be nearly impossible to make wine compatible with Vanguard.

LoL client doesn't start the game if Vanguard is not running. But what's preventing emulating the Vanguard? At some point LoL client has to ask hey Vanguard are you running, is everything ok? And then Fakeguard answers "yup I'm totally Vanguard and everything's good".

Sure there would probably be a race of LoL adding more different checks and Fakeguard having to emulate them, but it seems to me that it wouldn't be a race Riot could hope to win. In the end we'd still be at the same position that we were in before Vanguard.

There's obvious problem with running shady software in ring 0, but presumably cheaters are already doing that, that's why we "need" Vanguard.

So am I missing something here?

Linux distro for gaming laptops

10. Mai 2024 - 09:56

I'm trying to switch to Linux from Windows. As a developer I who's worked with embedded systems running Linux (raspbian), Im not completely inexperienced, but God Everytime I try to switch because I'm tired of windows issues, there is always something even more broken in Linux.

This time I installed Pop!OS on my gigabyte A5 K1 Laptop. Everytime it goes into suspend, the HDD stays running and it won't turn back on, forcing me to kill it. Is there any distro that works well with laptops or do I need to simply try a bunch? I'm planning on trying Ubuntu. Is there anything else that should work? I am using it for development and gaming.

Looking to either get current keyboard macro keys to work or replace the keyboard

10. Mai 2024 - 08:32

Currently I have a Steelseries Apex Gaming keyboard (linked for easier finding of which one it is, original steelseries store page for it is delisted since discontinued) and am trying to get the M1-12 and/or MX1-10 keys to function in Linux. Was using these for extra keybinds in various games when I was using Windows. I have mapped the M1-12 keys to functions F13-24 and MX6-8 to mouse buttons 6-8 via Steelseries GG/Engine on Windows. Issue comes when I swap back to Linux Mint, it doesn't detect any input from the keys stated earlier.

Does anyone know how I can get the OS to properly detect these keys and possibly remap them if need be? I've already tried key detection via xev and various guides on using wine for the Engine program (this doesn't even detect the keyboard itself).

If this is not possible, then any suggestions on a replacement keyboard would be appreciated. Preferably, but not required, having numpad, nav keys, and extra buttons that can be remapped or programmable layering if extra buttons not possible.

Vanguard on Linux

10. Mai 2024 - 03:58

Could someone explain to me why Riot Vanguard really breaks League of Legends on Linux?

Yes, I know it is a driver on kernel level, but is It really Impossible to emulate/mock that on linux, in order to make the game think that Vanguard is installed? I mean, the game already thinks it's running on windows when we use wine, why cannot we lie a little more?

New gaming server few questions

10. Mai 2024 - 02:52

Hello,

We just went to Microcenter and did a full send to upgrade our community's gaming server. Its been more than 6 months of me mucking about with Debian CLI. Old server has Pi-hole running and 2 different unity based game servers running. Its on 12.5 bookworm. It's working well.

Reason I'm posting is because I don't use linux on the daily, and my knowledge is novice at best. Would there be compelling reasons to switch to ubuntu (server? I'm assuming?). Last time I just kind of picked without knowing much, not sure how I even landed on Debian tbh.

This will be a dedicated gaming server that I set up and remote into and (ideally) forget exists. Debian works, I know it does the job well. I'm assuming there would be syntax changes? I sort of remember that many guides and tutorials are written for ubuntu more than Debian, is that generally true? I think that would sway me more toward Ubuntu.

I understand more than anything is boils down to preference, and I think I'm leaning into Ubuntu based on sheer popularity. Are there any angles I haven't covered? Any input is appreciated :)
