Gaming on Linux vs Windows: Performance + overclocking

Reddit Linux_Gaming - 29. Mai 2024 - 18:56

I have two questions:

How close in performance is Gaming on Linux compared to the same game on Windows? With all things being equal (Hardware/GPU/CPU) is performance better or worse on average for the same game. I know it might depend on the game.

Second question: MSI afterburner has been my go to program for overclocking my GPU for years - what would be the best GUI alternative for Afterburner (both Nvidia and AMD if that matters)

Thank you

Mouse not able to move below certain point on screen

Reddit Linux_Gaming - 29. Mai 2024 - 18:45

Demonstration of the problem in Dota 2

I have a strange problem in some games where I can't move my mouse below a certain point on my screen. This does occur in native Steam games (like Dota 2) or games running through Proton (BattleBit Remastered for example).

Thing is, I really can't find a common denominator because of that. I would have guessed it's a quirk of Proton or a single game, but it's happened in multiple different games so far.
I found a quick fix, which is pressing Super to get back to the GNOME menu and switching back to the game, however that only works until I click anything in the game. After that I can still only move down until the "invisible barrier".

I've tried searching for this problem but came up with nothing, simply because I'm not sure what's causing this. After this happens in game I can move my mouse just fine to the bottom of the screen in GNOME, it's just in-game that this doesn't work.

If anyone has any idea what could cause this and how I could go about fixing it, I'd be very grateful.

My system:
OS: NixOS 24.11
Kernel Version: 6.6.31
Desktop: GNOME
Driver: AMD AMD Radeon RX 7900 XTX (radeonsi, navi31, LLVM 17.0.6, DRM 3.54, 6.6.31)
Driver Version: 4.6 (Compatibility Profile) Mesa 24.0.7

Hat in Time now doesn't start up on Arch

Reddit Linux_Gaming - 29. Mai 2024 - 16:27

I used to be able to get Hat in Time to run on Arch but recently after doing a fresh resinstall of EndeavourOS I can't get it to work. Before it would work great with GE Proton 9.1 but now that and any other proton version I try can't get it to start up. It will either stay stuck on launching or say that the game is running but then end after about a couple minutes. Any other ideas of what I could do to get it work? I have both an AMD GPU and CPU.

Manjaro and World of Warcraft

Reddit Linux_Gaming - 29. Mai 2024 - 16:25

Heya, this one is really giving me headaches...

I recently installed Manjaro (before I had Nobara) and I'm trying to get World of Warcraft to run. Battle.net was a pain, too, but I got that managed. It finds the Blizzard-games and updates them. But when I click on "Start" on the WoW-tab, the button shortly changes to "Running...", then goes back to "Start" and the game doesn't come up.

I tried wine and wine-staging, as well as Lutris and Bottles. Sometimes, I can start the game, just to see a segmentation vault and the only option is to close the game. That's it.

I followed several guides, also found one here for Manjaro, but it is already 5 years old. Still gave it a shot, still nothing.

Please ask as many information as you need to get this answered, it's my wifes computer and if this doesn't run fast, I need to sleep on the couch :(

Looking for best distro for gaming "Nvidia GPU"

Reddit Linux_Gaming - 29. Mai 2024 - 16:25

So far I have tried Ubuntu and Garuda Linux.

Ubuntu seemed like it was lacking features that I craved and Garuda was not stable with Nvidia GPU and would crash into a black screen a lot.

What would this community recommend for a stable distro but works great with a Nvidia GPU?

I also would prefer to have KDE Plasma.

Might give POP OS a try tonight because I saw how they have a separate ISO for Nvidia GPU guys like myself.

P.S.

I have seen where Nobara has been recommended for gamers but I fear with it being a small development team that it would be dropped eventually. I need something long term.

Bazzite - How do I force games to stop acting like they're on a console?

Reddit Linux_Gaming - 29. Mai 2024 - 16:12

I'm about tojump back to Fedora 40 KDE. Some games I download refuse to disengage from gamepad, like Skyrim AE. I managed to get the game to use keybosrd, but mouse was very flaky. Plus, the game still showed gamepad buttons for the menus. I managed to ween Fallout 4 off the gamepad and did the exact same steps for Skyrim, but it refuses to change.

If anyone knows how to force steam to treat games like I'm on a desktop, that would keep me from jumping ship. TIA!

We need to talk about(Gaming Distros) this video.

Reddit Linux_Gaming - 29. Mai 2024 - 15:41

Okay, so This is a video from Nick who runs the Linux Experiment YouTube channel.

Recently he was received a paid sponsorship to promote TuxedoOS as a gaming Distro alternative, in that video he claimed to essentially report that Gaming Distros are basically the same with preinstalled packages.

This in my opinion is a crazy statement from someone as intelligent as Nick, who knows how to obtain information from Documentation provided by all Distributions.

I really want to focus on NobaraOS Because I believe it is the best Gaming Distro even though use base Fedora' in my personal Gaming Rig.

So NobaraOS does a lot, and I mean a lot.

  1. Kernel Patching.

Most people probably don't know this, but Nobara actually enables the DS4/Dualsense Controller(s) to function at 1ms response times by default.

[source]https://nobaraproject.org/docs/playstation-controllers/playstation-controller-polling-rate/)

It also includes another Kernel patch that unborks GlibC which can be the difference between your game working with some Anti-Cheats or not.

So whenever Linus Torvald decides to remove a dependency that people rely on because backwards compact is not his concern, its negated.

Device Specific patches that enable proper functionality of devices like the ROG Ally or Steam Deck via Kernel patched driver support.

I don't know about you guys, but I for one do not and will never have an interest in patching my Kernel, and I would bet many others would not put as much effort in anf would be lost without the features or support they want/need.

A lot of what's done in Nobara is why it's the best Gaming Distro imo.

  1. Only talks about averages

There's not a single mention of .01% or 1% lows, and the video is super short and does not actually show you any data/video of the distros in action.

You basically get a low effort Average FPS at the end of the video that's basically "just trust me bro", Tuxedo is unrivaled.

Nick is not a gamer, he has games but even he has admitted that devices like his review unit Steam Deck collects dust & gaming news is always the last segment even if its huge news.

  1. All of these Distros have a purpose

Bazite's focus is being a SteamOS alternative, an immutable stable base that is the only Distro to replicate SteamOS's Game Mode layer on Boot.

Nobara has great patch support for greater compatibility and improved responsiveness.

And above all, having preinstalled packages is not abad thing, it is a good 2-5hrs to fully setup a Linux system exactly how you want it and having a Distro that does 80-95% of the work is not something to scoff at.

  1. I do not reccomend Debian/Ubuntu based distros.

Biggest flaws with Tuxedo besides his blantant sponsorship, is it's Ubuntu based.

While Tuxedo & Pop OS(Yes Linux Mint has " Edge" which gives you a more updated Kernel) offer updated Kernels, even in comparison to Tuxedo Pop_OS has a scheduler which will prioritize Gaming Windows for improved performance.

In the end Ubuntu packages are insanely outdated often and this can cause compatibility issues with

Proton: Games not loading, no error code, no indication on how to fix.

(I've had this happen with Lies of P Demo would not work on Pop_OS swapped to Fedora and it worked as intended)

The number of Linux Mint users I see leaving ProtonDB reports saying their games don't work with Kernel Version 5.15 is staggering.

It is a lot clearly people don't know that Core exists with an updated Kernel, but that won't 100% solve all Ubuntu/Debian based gaming issues,

Software Incompatibility: I cannot build Gamescope from Git on Pop_OS as it's missing core dependencies and once I patched perferences.d to find said depends they still could not be found or prioritized. Finding a Gamescope Maintainer for .deb means you're going to be running a version of Game scope from 1-2yrs ago and isn't actively maintained.

I could think of other examples but I just don't think Ubuntu is where it is for newly released games or overall gaming support.

If you're playing older games or games with fantastic Proton support then Ubuntu is fine, my home Distro is Pop_OS and I'm very excited for Cosmic's release.

But for games that are brand new and questionable support, or competitive video games I reccomend Arch/Fedora + KDE for improved FPS/Latency/Support.

Overall that video spreads a message that Gaming Distros really don't matter when that's not far from reality IMO. But it's a sponsored video maybe I just shouldnt take Nick's "Gaming" opinions seriously.

Cyclical FPS Drops/Recovery on Monster Hunter World : Iceborne (Proton Experimental)

Reddit Linux_Gaming - 29. Mai 2024 - 15:38

hello people, i seem to have a problem with Monster Hunter World : Iceborne.

when i play it, i can get a stable 60+ fps in the more performance-intensive tasks like being inside of a hunt, but it usually lasts a minute or two before i then have about 5 to 10 minutes of lackluster performance, at about 30FPS or less.

i wanted to do a temperature benchmark using PSensor while playing on the Guiding Lands (which is the place that seems to run the worst, performance-wise) and noticed some things. i've written a .txt file that lists what modifications i brought to the game as well as my own observations, and i'll put its content just below.

"I'm on MHW with potato settings, probably as low as the game lets you go from its own settings. I did not modify any of the files using a text editor, but I have installed multiple mods into my MHWI copy.

Notably, Stracker's Loader, PBaPE, and a mod that nukes most particle effects.

I have saved two images of the same print screen of the graph. One is unlabelled, the other is labelled.

The graph portions under the green labels were when my game was at 60+ FPS and was very well playable.

For the red labels, my game would stutter a lot, going at about 30 FPS if not less. This made it hard to play.

For the hardware, I have tried to make the CPU go into performance mode using the terminal, and have put "Maximum Performance Mode" in Nvidia X Server.

As I analyze the graph, I see a few things.

First off, in the green labels portions, these things seem to shoot up to the top or higher than when in red labels :

...everything except CPU usage and the GPU PCIe

the "video" part of my GPU is at a constant 0 temperature the whole time. That's not normal, is it?"

i put the screenshots on imgur, here they are :

  • temperature benchmark obtained with PSensor
  • neofetch (i also add that i downloaded the 535.171.04 version of "nvidia-driver-535" and have not taken the time to play around with drivers, but this seems to be more of a problem with hardware behavior than drivers to me. still, i should take the time to try things)

would anybody know of how i can fix this? i tried changing the Nvidia X Server settings and changed the governor mode of my CPU from powersaving to performance using the terminal, but this doesn't seem to have changed a lot of things (nor does the CPU seem to be the main problem, even if it's not being used at 99%)

cheers everyone, have a great day :]

Cheat Happiness aurora steamdeck tool.

Reddit Linux_Gaming - 29. Mai 2024 - 15:36

I was wondering if there is way to use this on Linux Mint? I've downloaded the file but when I try to run it i get an unknown file type error. I know this works fine on the steam deck which is Linux based.
