Portal refuses to use GPU at all and gets laggy, bumping the CPU usage to 100%

Reddit Linux_Gaming - 01. August 2025 - 15:09

Hi there. Per the title, recently I tried playing Portal but was surprised by that Portal got to run absurdly slow (10-20fps) meanwhile my laptop (i5-7300HQ/8GB RAM/GTX 1050) is highly capable of playing the game. Checking out the resource monitor (I use btop) showing that it pushes the GPU to 100%, while the graphics card is incredibly idle. I also tried Portal 2 and it appears to just immediately crash.

can you all tell what's wrong? given that other games works fine in general, sometimes certain games running via proton do freeze though (but they are not the main topic in this post).

Mine pins on Minecraft Bedrock Launcher?

Reddit Linux_Gaming - 01. August 2025 - 15:09

Using the Minecraft Bedrock Launcher downloaded from Flathub, and it works flawlessly. The performance on it in better than Java with Sodium or whatever other performance mods. Thing is, buying Minecoins isn't possible on it for some reason? The price of the Minecoins is "10000#" and clicking on it says "Something went wrong - Sorry, we were unable to complete your purchase". Is it possible to get them via the actual copy of Pocket Edition? It should work, since I connected with both the Microsoft and Google account I use for said Pocket Edition account.

trying to play fallout new vegas on linux

Reddit Linux_Gaming - 01. August 2025 - 14:23

so I'm trying to play the game but for whatever reason, it defaults to 4:3 and I am unable to set it to 16:9. I have tried setting launch options to skip the launcher and setting different proton versions, none of this seemed to change anything. I am unable to change anything ingame as the menu options go passed the 4:3 boarders that the game wants to set. I have tried setting 16:9 in the launcher but it goes back to 4:3. I am on cachy os 6.16 with the latest nvidia drivers and the game sees my nvidia gpu (an rtx 3070)

linux smartphone

Reddit Linux_Gaming - 01. August 2025 - 13:51

i have been creating a device that has whatever linux distro, and is dualbooted with android (yk the smartphone) and i want genuine opinions, not calling it dumb, actual opinions.

on a deeper dive: it is fully modular, meaning the battery can change out with anything with usb-c, the storage is m.2 and can also upgrade to any desirable amount, alongside that, the motherboard can swap out in case of upgrade and modifying.

i am well aware pinephone is a thing, but this is much more modular and will have differences.

the hardware is much like a regular pc, so keyboards, controllers and mouses are fully supported through usb-c --- and in terms of the build and design, it is 3d printed (for now) and is just 3 screws away and a magnet from upgrading. --- dimensions (for now) are 16 mm thick and 6 inches in height--

the uses are: server hosting, gaming: regular android phone usage, regular pc usage (and literally anything a pc can do)

how is this actually different: ever heard of the steam deck? ever heard of the nokia 3310? lliterally any phone that has a removable battery? all of that in one compact design, where what you own is actually yours, any app or software can be yours natively. (no android or ios 'modularity' that they may or may not be lying about) it is literally yours, meaning you can literally put multiple of these phones in a server rack and it will do it natively.

pricing: no more than 400 usd probably 300 (hopefully)

please, give advice and opinions (or even ask a question) but don't call it dumb without summing it up on why. i probably do have an answer for whatever you may criticize or ask about.

-Thanks

Looking for controller combining remapper

Reddit Linux_Gaming - 01. August 2025 - 13:33

I am trying to migrate a Windows-based arcade cabinet that I had built to Linux, namely Bazzite. Due to limitations on the inputs on the control boards I used, I have each control stick plugged into the machine as a separate input device, and then the buttons as an additional input. On Windows, I used UCR to unify those inputs into two Xbox-style controllers. I have searched, but cannot seem to find a similar feature in the remapper options available on Linux. Has anyone come across a remapper with such a feature?

Gamescope help

Reddit Linux_Gaming - 01. August 2025 - 12:48

Hello!

Please explain to me what the advantages of Gamescope are.

I use AMD CPU/GPU, CachyOS (GNOME), only Steam gaming, proton-cachyos/proton-ge (PROTON_ENABLE_WAYLAND=1).

I have heard many times that people use Gamescope, but I still don't understand what its advantages are.

Please advise.

Having persistent crash issues with Warframe I'm unable to resolve.(Xid 31 MMU faults)

Reddit Linux_Gaming - 01. August 2025 - 12:25

First off, I'll just mention I'm a noob. I've tried to include every scrap of information that might be useful, but I had an LLM point me in the direction to relevant logs. I apologize if I've missed something because of that.

I'm trying to run Warframe on EndeavourOS, under Wayland. In the past the game has worked extremely well, but more recently I've been unable to play for more than ~20 minutes without a crash, sometimes a rather spectacular one where my entire DE flickers in and out and all my programs close. It started with an error box that read status && vkcreategraphicspipelines as an error, which led me down a troubleshooting rabbit hole of methodically changing one thing at a time to try and get a stable experience.

I've got:
GPU: RTX 3090
Driver: Nvidia 575.64.05
DE: KDE Plasma 6.4.3 + Wayland
Game: Warframe (via Steam)

I've tried:
- Proton Experimental, Proton GE 9-23, Proton GE 10-10
- Warframe with both DX11 and DX12
- Verified game files
- Reinstalled entirely
- Nuked Proton prefix and shader cache
- Tried PROTON_USE_WINE3D=1
- Tried PROTON_ENABLE_WAYLAND=1 %command% (launcher just appears black)
- RAM tested with MemTest86
- Ran another game (Last Epoch) without problem

I snagged some logs with journalctl which points me in the direction of it being a driver issue maybe?

Jul 31 22:41:52 andrew-desktop kernel: traps: Z:/bin/warframe.x64.exe [189938] trap invalid opcode ip:7c98e2 sp:22b7d4e0 error:0 in libnvoptix.so.1[7c3000+15d7000] Jul 31 22:41:53 andrew-desktop kernel: NVRM: Xid (PCI:0000:0b:00): 31, pid=189938, Ch 0000, intr 10000000. Also ran dmesg which gave me: [Fri Aug 1 00:34:03 2025] NVRM: Xid (PCI:0000:0b:00): 31, pid=54202, Ch 0000, intr 10000000. MMU Fault: ENTRY_NOT_PRESENT 0c0041c000

I've browsed around on Protondb and Linux gaming and can't really find a solution. I'm not technical enough (still learning this whole 'linux' thing) to figure it out on my own, so I was hoping one of you might have a suggestion.

WoW - NPCs or portals not loading.

Reddit Linux_Gaming - 01. August 2025 - 12:15

Anyone else experiencing issues with portals/npcs not loading? Mostly i experience this when going into a delve, then completing it... going to dornogal and back to a delve...

Sometimes my HS or teleport wont load , but the cooldown on said hs/tp has kicked in.
Sometimes the NPCs in dornogal wont load up when just skyriding there
OR when going back to a delve the delve portal wont show.

Reloading doesnt help, an actual relog does.

I've tried turning all addons off, clearing cache, even a data clear/reinstall of WoW. Ingame Network options Optimize for speed on or off
Im using Nobara with Lutris, and tried Proton - Experimental / ProtonGE-Latest / Wine 10.6 staging... all with the same result.
