Reddit Linux_Gaming - 04. September 2024 - 08:04

Every time I try to install Linux something doesn't work like counter strike 2 or some weird driver stops working then the whole OS just doesn't want to work.

mangohud increases FPS???

Reddit Linux_Gaming - 04. September 2024 - 07:52

When playing Apex Legends with mangohud OFF, I see about 90fps average just standing in one spot(center of firing range). With mangohud ON, I see 130-144 in the same spot(better than it did on windows btw). What does mangohud do to where it boosts performance? gamemoderun doesn't give me the same results.

Gamecube controllers through sdl2 broke again??

Reddit Linux_Gaming - 04. September 2024 - 05:38

I've googled my brains out and can't find any answers, though it's just as likely I've overlooked something.

For a while, it just worked, but now I'm once again unable to use my wiiu gamecube controller adapter with any games, native or wine. gamepadtool does not detect it, and adding mappings from gamecontrollerdb.txt does not work. Works for every other controller I have, but not the gamecube controllers.
They do work just fine in Dolphin using its native support, but that's all. sdl2 just seems averse to using rawhid again and I have absolutely zero idea of how to fix it. I don't even remember if I found a fix for it the first time or if it just randomly started working one day.

It's the official adapter, so there's no PC mode.

Out of nowhere, all my games are listed as "missing" on Lutris and fail to launch

Reddit Linux_Gaming - 04. September 2024 - 04:27

https://preview.redd.it/recwhotodpmd1.png?width=2531&format=png&auto=webp&s=dc89b3be73c03d5ed8750e38901daccfffe50c73

I truly have no idea what caused this. Looking at the wine prefixes the games should be fine. When I try to run a game, it gets stuck at "launching". The logs are empty. I've restarted, tried to update, etc.

The only game that doesn't say missing is FFXIV, which I manually configured to try to get it to recognize. Seemingly it recognizes the prefix and game data because it doesn't say "missing," however the game still doesn't launch and behaves exactly like the others.

I'm on Pop!_OS 22.04. Thanks for any help, I'll try to answer any questions.

HOLOISO As a Virtual Machine Error

Reddit Linux_Gaming - 04. September 2024 - 02:41

Good evening.

https://preview.redd.it/jbyu5eg8vomd1.png?width=2048&format=png&auto=webp&s=f4a9a529eb7933ff119348682cd0399c39d4a3d4

I downloaded the "HOLOISO" Linux Distribution with the intent of installing it as a Virtual Machine. My computer is getting too old to run many of my favorite games, so I decided to try a Virtual Machine. I used the "Rufus" USB Flash Drive kit to make an USB flash drive that accepts UEFI booting procedures, and loaded it into "VM Ware". I booted from the flash drive that I used the "Rufus" to program, as instructed. The installation completed successfully, but now, whenever I start the "HOLOISO" Linux Distribution operating system, I get a black screen. For a brief second, a line of code flashes across the screen, and then it remains black from then on. Restarting it does not help. This is the screen I see in the OS: https://archive.is/6zkcm . I have not been able to get anything else to work. These are the specifics of my machine (the host): MAKE/MODEL: Dell Optiplex 9020 Mini-Tower, sixty-four bit RAM: Thirty-two gigabytes of RAM OS: "Windows VII Professional" CPU: Intel Core I7-4770 CPU, Eight Cores, 3.40 Gigahertz GPU: Nvidia Geforce GTX-1660 What am I doing wrong? -TURTLESHROOM submitted by /u/Advanced_Friend4348

[Terraria] Side mouse buttons not able to be bounded to Quick Heal / Any other keybind

Reddit Linux_Gaming - 04. September 2024 - 02:03

Hi y'all, I've been playing terraria recently and I wanted to rebind the quick heal / mana buttons to my side mouse so I don't have to stretch across my keyboard to heal in a tense fight, but it doesn't work. I can bind it to my other mice buttons and keys but not the side mouse buttons. I am using a Razer Naga on KDE Wayland if that helps determine the solution. I've checked it with firefox and other apps and surely enough it's just fine, maybe it's something to do with key shortcuts, idk. Any tips are appreciated :D

How do I find logs for games run with proton?

Reddit Linux_Gaming - 04. September 2024 - 00:52

I just swapped from using the flatpak version of steam to the one provided my my package manager, and now any game that requires Proton to run either crashes immediately or never shows up, for example, I was previously able to play The Witcher Enchanted Edition no problem, but now it will not launch.

I'm not very proficient at Linux, but I understand I should at least try and look at the logs to find out what's going on here.

Partition full, do I extend it or make a new one?

Reddit Linux_Gaming - 03. September 2024 - 23:22

On my home desktop I'm running a 2TB NVME drive, and I had a partition with windows (~1.5TB)that I haven't touched since march or so when I migrated to fedora (~0.5TB), and I've now ran out of space on my fedora partition where I mostly game.

I deleted my windows partition earlier today, but I held back on extending the fedora partition because I was considering making a new partition and move all my games there (roughly 250GB atm, I need ~80GB more for Cyberpunk2077). Another thing that crossed my mind is installing arch on it (make it a 1TB partition for example and keep the other ~0.5TB for an emergency), and daily drive it for a while and maybe remain there until I decide to hop.

Generally what is recommended in this situations, should I just extend the fedora one, and isntall arch on a 0.5TB and play around with it and see what's what?

Another factor to trying arch is that I haven't tried it (technically I tried to, but I bricked it mid install), and also for whatever reason my VR headset (OG HTC vive) doesn't work on fedora, never managed to figure out why.

Also another question, is there any reason for not having games on a different partition? Can steam give me problems with that?

Open to discussion/advice/ideas.

When will monitor overclocking (Increase refresh rate beyond the stock monitor rate) be available on NVIDIA Graphics under Wayland?

Reddit Linux_Gaming - 03. September 2024 - 23:15

I've searched everywhere and it seems there is no information regarding monitor overclocking with NVIDIA graphics under Wayland. And I have even tried overclocking my modest 60hz monitor on X11 with xrandr with no success whatsoever, maybe it's because I'm using the property drivers? IDK, and to be honest it's not like I can even use the open source alternatives like Nouveau because I have a Pascal GTX 1060, and they're not very supported when it comes to open source....

If you have any way to overclock monitors under Wayland with NVIDIA Graphics I'd be so grateful for the help. Otherwise if you have any information about this, feel free to tell me about it. :D

And yeah, i know it's not recommended to do this, but I already overclocked my monitor to 79hz on Windows with total success and i love the smoothness, and I can't live without it :'(

I have a BENQ GW2265 if you're asking.

Steam remote play issues on LMDE

Reddit Linux_Gaming - 03. September 2024 - 22:34

Tried remote play from an arch host to a LMDE client. It works perfectly except that the stream freezes clientside if it is the main window. If i'm focused on another window i can see the video working and the mouse movement registering, but the moment i click on the stream window it freezes. Any idea how to fix this?

Linux vs Windows Performance?

Reddit Linux_Gaming - 03. September 2024 - 21:24

Hi, I bought a New PC with 7900xtx gpu and 7800x3d CPU, and now I have to decide for an OS. Whats the performance difference these days between linux and windows?

Because actually Id much prefer going linux only, but Im afraid that I bought expensive Hardware for nothing, if it performs worse on linux. Is that the case? Trank you.

WoW laggy on Framework 16 Laptop Arch Linux KDE Wayland

Reddit Linux_Gaming - 03. September 2024 - 21:20

Hey there friends, I usually don't have any issues running games on linux but I don't push those limits usually either.

I'm recently trying getting back into WoW to check out the new content and do some PVP at least. While it plays well on my desktop (AMD 6800xt & 5800x) my laptop (Framework 16 Laptop Arch Linux KDE Wayland) is quite stuttery even on lowest settings. It gets really bad when alt-tabbing too but that recovers fairly quick. I will say the occasional thing I want to look up has me reaching for my phone instead of alt-tab though so I would like to improve it there.

I am pretty experienced in linux for server use cases but I'd say less so with desktop application performance troubleshooting.

I installed bnet through lutris, wow through bnet.

What I've done so far is:

  • set the settings very low
  • windows mode
  • regedit for some x11 setting
  • wine config force dedicated gpu
  • wine config emulate a desktop
  • wine config do not decorate window

The above configs seemed to make alt-tabbing a better experience. The wow process seems to eventually need a restart after just an hour or two though as it gets unplayable over time it seems.

Anyone have any ideas of what I could/should try? I wonder if I don't have the correct drivers installed or didn't select the most ideal providers for some components during arch install.

Controller randomly disconnecting

Reddit Linux_Gaming - 03. September 2024 - 19:59

Recently, my controller has been randomly disconnecting while I'm playing games. However, that's not the main issue. When it does disconnect, it quickly reconnects, but once it comes back, it doesn't work anymore.

Note: With the Xbox controller (USB), when you hold the green button and move the analog stick, the mouse cursor moves. This functionality works when the controller reconnects, but when I try to do something in-game, nothing happens.

I have tried changing the kernel version, using the Flatpak version of Steam, and switching from Fedora to Debian, but the problem persists.
