Low fps in games when not run with gamescope

Reddit Linux_Gaming - 31. Januar 2025 - 21:03

I've been having this issue since nvidia's 565 drivers, and currently on the 570 beta drivers. I'm using arch with Hyprland. All games i try to start, run at very low fps (highest i've seen is 15 fps), but when i run them in gamescope, they run fine and at the refresh rate i'd expect. I have a 4090 and am using the nvidia-open-beta-dkms, hyprland-git and it's subpackages, and linux 6.12.10. If anyone is able to help me narrow this issue down and possibly fix it, it would be very much appreciated

Linux vs Windows Benchmark Red Dead Redemption 2

Overall - Its a draw. Linux better in several scenes and Windows in others. Vulkan API for both.

Emulation on Linux, need help!

Reddit Linux_Gaming - 31. Januar 2025 - 20:18

I have a very big romset on my NAS that I use from my batocera/HDTV machine, my handheld (Batocera) and I WAS using with my Windows machine through Retrobat.
I wiped out Windows from my life and now I'm enjoying the Linux life (arch btw), but I can't seem to find anything even close to be compatible with my collection like Retrobat/Batocera are on the other machines.
ES-DE exists, I know that, but it's a shell without any preinstalled emulator (not even retroarch itself) and I have dozens of systems (even obscure ones) that would be a huge pain to configure one by one. Another pain point is that ES-DE isn't NAS/server-friendly at all, and it even has a media setup of its own (I have music, art, manuals, videos and images for all games in my collection)
Does anyone of you have a similar setup?
Any advice?

ISO: Classic Preloaded Linux Game

Reddit Linux_Gaming - 31. Januar 2025 - 20:13

Back in like 2003, my dad was playing around with a couple versions of Linux. He installed one of my desktop and it had like 10-15 games preloaded with it. I played the hell out of Tux Racer, but there was one in particular I remember loving but can’t place the name of it.

It was 2D, all pixelated, and you controlled a little triangular shuttle/spaceship. The worlds were static environments, nothing moved or changed, but they reacted to you and your weapons. You could load plastic explosives in to your ship and replace an entire lake with explosives, then shoot it and create a huge bomb. Or if you dropped a bunch of thermite around and shot that, it would spread like wildfire and torch all the wooden structures and grass and trees.

I don’t think there was any story in the game, I just remember horsing around with that little ship and destroying various sandbox maps with it.

If anybody has any idea what that game was, I’d be happy and thankful to hear it!

Seems nvidia drivers v570 really makes minecraft tank

Reddit Linux_Gaming - 31. Januar 2025 - 20:00

Pre 570 (565) was getting 120fps solid on my nvidia 4090, now the performance has quite massively degraded.

Even with shaders off, the GPU usage in game is supposedly 90-100%, in btop it's maybe 40-50% at best.

Anyone else experiencing this?

Can you play Steam games on Linux, or do you need a Steam Deck? What about Wuthering Waves? Zenless Zone Zero?

Reddit Linux_Gaming - 31. Januar 2025 - 19:36

I'm debating on jumping onto Linux, Windows 11 is being too sketchy. But there's some things that I use that I'm worried about Linux not supporting. Clip Studio Paint being one, and my Steam games being another.

Now I'm brand new to Linux, so I've only glanced at a few things, but I thought I read that you can't game on it. I play mostly single player games, some old some new, including Hidden Object games, but I'm looking forward to things like GTA6 with friends. I also like games not on Steam, like Wuthering Waves and Zenless Zone Zero.

Is there a way Linux can, or eventually will, support these? I heard Steam is coming out with an OS, but I'm so new to all of this, it's hard to wrap my head around.

I can only use 30hz with an LG C2 television (Fedora 41)

Reddit Linux_Gaming - 31. Januar 2025 - 19:29

There are options up to the 60hz in the Gnome display settings, but just the 30hz value can be enabled — the lower options included (25, 24, 23.98hz), all return back to 30.

I have an Intel-based Asus PN42 NUC ("mini-PC") with HDMI 2.0b which will be used with low-end games and for video playback.

The input has been set as a PC in the TV settings. I've otherwise configured following the rtings.com guide.

Fedora 41, seems to apply equally to both Silverblue and Workstation.

The exact specs will be posted at a later date, if needed.

Gaming on AMD APUs?

Reddit Linux_Gaming - 31. Januar 2025 - 19:06

I built an AMD 8600G-based system a little while back with the intent of using it as a split-use plex server and 1080p couch gaming setup. I've had a hell of a time getting it up and running, and wanted to gut check if I'm making things hard on myself for no reason.

I've had a really tough time getting the AMD graphics drivers working well. No matter what combination of packages I install or versions of vulkan drivers, I get low frame rates and screen blackouts. I've follow several tutorials on how to install drivers, what Wine versions to use (am using Lutris and Steam) and I feel that maybe the hardware just isn't well supported and I should buy a cheap NVidia-based card.

Has anyone had success gaming on an APU-based system? 8600g/8700g/5600g/5700g? Any specific tips and tricks in what drivers to use?

Thanks!

Reddit Linux_Gaming - 31. Januar 2025 - 18:09

Frame gen makes Cyberpunk 2077 and Indiana Jones crash

Reddit Linux_Gaming - 31. Januar 2025 - 17:58

Hi all,

My setup is Fedora 41, Proton experimental, nvidia 570, 4080 super.

I can't seem to enable framegen? Cyberpunk crashes immediately, Indiana Jones won't show it unless I use older ge_proton and if I use it, it crashes as soon as it renders the first frame. Cyberpunk crashes after the red bird shows.

What am I doing wrong? I tried GSP On, GSP Off, Open/Proprietary, tried Proton 8, Proton 9...

How do I force OpenGL to use my nvidia graphics card instead of mesa intel?

Reddit Linux_Gaming - 31. Januar 2025 - 17:38

I feel like I have a headache. I've spent the last 2 hours scouring the internet and applying what I could comprehend to get this thing to just go do the basic simple process of choosing the Nvidia GPU over the iGPU when running games.

Info: EndeavourOS | KDE Plasma 6 | Wayland |

Methods I've tried:

Using sudo envycontrol -s nvidia which resulted in nothing changing and openGL still clinging on to the iGPU.

Updating my nvidia drivers and rebooting which also resulted in no visible change.

Please, I'm at my wit's end here. I don't know what else I'm supposed to do and I feel like I'm going to have an aneurysm if I see glxinfo | grep "OpenGL renderer" return with Mesa intel one more time.

No se quita la pantalla completa

Reddit Linux_Gaming - 31. Januar 2025 - 17:16

Audio crackle in Halo MCC : CE on Arch i5-12600k + 4070

Reddit Linux_Gaming - 31. Januar 2025 - 16:58

I've been chipping away at this issue for a couple weeks
Video: https://streamable.com/6w5b3h
Proton Log Paste: https://pastebin.osuosl.org/view/8165c5e8 (the video and paste are from two different sessions)

Specs:
Mobo: Gigabyte Technology Co., Ltd. B760 MB Type B760M DS3H DDR4
CPU:12th Gen Intel(R) Core(TM) i5-12600K (10) @ 4.90 GHz
GPU:NVIDIA GeForce RTX 4070

Currently the game is being launched via steam, installed from my package manager. I've tried various version of proton from version 8 through the latest, experimental, hotfix, and the latest few versions of GE-proton. The issue also persists with and without gamemoderun.

I also have access to a steamdeck, which does not seem to have this problem. So i'm 99% sure it's either an issue with using an Nvidia card, or an issue with my audio setup.
I also don't have this issue with other games in the halo MCC.

At the moment i'm holding out for the new nvidia drivers in a day or two, and possibly the release of proton 10, but though best to ask incase anyone else has run into this issue.
