Lower FPS in Cachyos

Reddit Linux_Gaming - 04. Mai 2026 - 01:28

I have recently switched from windows to Cachyos. For the most part, have things that I need figured out. I am curious though, I seem to get much lower FPS in games, optimized the same in windows and cachyos. For example, Arma, which we know isn't very well optimized, I was getting about 140-160 FPS. Optimized the same in Cahcyos, im only getting about 65-80.

For reference i have a 7800x3d and a 5070. I believe I have the latest drivers installed.

Any recommendations on things to check?

On Linux Mint Cinnamon a wired Xbox controller is causing secondary inputs and interfering with games (ex. when moving forward character looks up)

Reddit Linux_Gaming - 04. Mai 2026 - 00:50

System:

Kernel: 6.17.0-23-generic arch: x86_64 bits: 64 compiler: gcc v: 13.3.0 clocksource: tsc

Desktop: Cinnamon v: 6.4.8 tk: GTK v: 3.24.41 wm: Muffin v: 6.4.1 vt: 7 dm: LightDM v: 1.30.0

Distro: Linux Mint 22.2 Zara base: Ubuntu 24.04 noble

Device-1: gip0.0 model: Microsoft Xbox Controller serial: N/A charge: 100% (should be ignored)

I am getting doubled inputs from my controller which causes bad behavior in games.

  • In first person games if I walk forward with the left analog stick the player also begins looking up.
  • Using the right analog stick also has strange issues like the player turning diagonally.

Outside of games:

  • The left analog stick moves the mouse cursor. This happens regardless if Steam is active or not.
  • Moving the right analog stick moves the mouse cursor horizontally only.
  • Pressing triggers moves the cursor up or down but afterwards the mouse cursor will always drift upwards regardless of whether I'm pushing any buttons or touching the analog sticks, and the only solution is to unplug the controller.
  • The A key was just placing the letter "p" in text editors for some reason. However an actual 'paste' action had different data in it. After I manually copied different data "A" no longer put down the letter "p".
  • The B button acts as if I am right-clicking and opens a list menu.

I think that games are receiving doubled-up inputs when I playing so I'm just looking to disable whatever it is that lets you move your mouse and do other inputs when a controller is plugged in. I did review the Accessibility settings in the System Settings and I'm not seeing any way to disable controller/joystick inputs.

There is surprisingly little info on this issue on Google and elsewhere.

I saw this post but it's for Arch and the instructions don't seem applicable:

Gmod keeps crashing on me.

Reddit Linux_Gaming - 04. Mai 2026 - 00:38

For whatever reason I can't get Gmod to work for the life of me. Everytime I tried to load up some models I wanted to use I will just crash. It would take me a few times of crashing and going back in just to finish loading up the models and then even after they have loaded there is still a chance I could crash randomly when just doing random things. For example, I disabled all my mods to see if it is my mods that are making me crash or something else, so I started to spawn Rebels and Combine soldiers across the map and then I spawned in a city scanner. When I got to try to move the city scanner with my physicsgun, Gmod just immediately crashes each time. I just want to know if there is a way to fix this cause it is getting really fucking old fast.

Steam Overlay coming for Wayland?

Reddit Linux_Gaming - 03. Mai 2026 - 23:45

Lately I was playing CS2 and I tried to open up a player's profile and it showed me the profile in in-game overlay like it would normally do in Windows or x11! I couldn't click anything or scroll through the profile page and had to restart the game but I could see it tho they may be cooking something for Wayland.

Became a Programmer while trying to do gaming on Linux mint. 😂😂😂

Reddit Linux_Gaming - 03. Mai 2026 - 23:01

So, all of us know gaming have problems on Linux and not everyone is smart enough to solve them. I don't know if I am the only one having these problems, but I tried everything, installed steam flat hub, steam normal, reinstalled steam, reinstalled Linux mint itself, reinstalled proton, different versions of proton, asked chat gpt, searched online solution, but got no help.

Problems =
1. Non steam games don't have icons and logo.
2. Non steam games having short screen and text size (Low dpi thing).
3. Unable to access game properties in steam.
4. Unable to change proton version in compatibility.
5. Unable to add any storage (other than the default one).
6. Unable to remove non-steam games.
7.

I don't know if anyone have or had any of these problems. But unfortunately, I do. So ended up created some scripts to tackle with these problems which manually edit the config files and let you do what you can't because of bugs or glitch or whatever.

What my steam tool can do =
1. Can add icon and logo on any non-steam game. (You must have the icon saved in game folder).
2. Can change dpi automatically every time you add a non-steam game. (No need to change it from wine config)
3. Can set a specific proton version for a specific game by selecting from downloaded proton version (you can download them from proton plus).
4. Can remove non-steam games from your library.

I also created a script in which you don't have to use steam to play your non steam game you can run it directly by right clicking the .exe game file (it will run in proton). so it removes the steam part in the process which is kinda useless if you don't wanna use steam as a launcher.

The whole reason I did this is that i just don't wanna use any extra package to install game or third party launchers. I wanna keep my system as clean as possible. And wanna do things easily (too lazy to work hard 😂).

If anyone want I can share the tool and help to use it.

I can't add a library folder to steam on ubuntu

Reddit Linux_Gaming - 03. Mai 2026 - 22:47
  • Steam client date: 28/04/2026
  • Distribution: Ubuntu

steam doesn't let me add a new drive when using steam -dev console command
library_folder_add /media/games/steam-library
steam returns with : Failed mounting that path!

In the settings clicking the add drive button only creates a steamapps subfolder and nothing else

I did set up my drives so that they could be accessed by all users by following the instructions of the top answer on this question, and it has been working perfectly fine other than this issue.

Also the drive has been formatted ext4 so I am genuinly confused at what could be causing this.

I posted this on github issues steam for linux but got no answers so I wanted to try my luck here.

Steam games not starting after some updates (Fedora KDE 43 and 44)

Reddit Linux_Gaming - 03. Mai 2026 - 22:38

Hi ! I've been using linux (Fedora KDE) since the end of Win10 support, and since then it's been amazing. Last week I've installed Starfield on Linux via Steam to play the new DLC, and played for a bit. Today while trying to start the game, nothing. Tried other games, same problem, the games just do not start (Starfield, No Man's Sky, Guild Wars 2, only Sky : Children of Light works for some reason). No error messages, when hitting the green play button, Steam starts the cycle (vulkan shaders, etc) then it stops without even starting the games. Any idea what might be happening ? Thanks.

Did I install Nvidia drivers correctly on Fedora with Secure Boot?

Reddit Linux_Gaming - 03. Mai 2026 - 22:18

Hi everyone! Yesterday I switched to Fedora from Windows and want to make sure I installed the drivers correctly.

I followed the docs at https://docs.fedoraproject.org/en-US/gaming/drivers/, but since I wanted to keep Secure Boot enabled, I had to sign the drivers. Here's what I did:

  1. Generated the key with: sudo kmodgenca -a
  2. Enrolled the key in MOK: sudo mokutil --import /etc/pki/akmods/certs/public_key.der
  3. The signature wasn't being recognized for some reason, so I forced a rebuild: sudo akmods --rebuild --force

Now nvidia-smi shows this:

Does this look right?

high CPU usage while gaming, Nvidia GPU

Reddit Linux_Gaming - 03. Mai 2026 - 22:09

hi im having some problems while gaming, every now and then i get these really powerful CPU consumption spikes. things like Cinamon, Vesktop, Xorg, the game i want to play, all spike up to 100% at random times. On the image you can see but one instance of my CPU going really high up on CPU3. When this happens my games usually freeze for a split second.

Ive tried reinstalling the games and steam, Ive tried disabling desktop animation and ive tried updating all, linux mint, GPU drivers (nvidia rtx3070), i adjusted proton and this still happen if i can get a better photo ill send it.

Steam sees Victrix Pro VFG as two different controllers at same time

Reddit Linux_Gaming - 03. Mai 2026 - 21:55

This is a bit of a weird one. I have a Victrix Pro VFG PS5 controller that I normally use in PS5 mode when gaming. My laptop is an Alienware M18 R2 with PopOS 24.04 and running Cosmic.

Until the most recent steam update I have been able to use my controller as a ps5 controller thanks to some udev rules posted below. It worked well though in Eldenring Nightreign the touchpad had a tendency to act like both the options and screenshot button depending on where I tapped it. Weird but usable in normal gameplay for opening the map.

# Victrix Pro BFG - PS5 Wired Mode SUBSYSTEM=="usb", ATTR{idVendor}=="0e6f", ATTR{idProduct}=="0218", MODE="0666" KERNEL=="hidraw*", ATTRS{idVendor}=="0e6f", ATTRS{idProduct}=="0218", MODE="0666"

After the most recent update when trying to play Nightreign inputs from the controller became doubled, flipping between xbox and playstation inputs on screen and trying to do anything with the right stick became impossible.

I looked in the controller set up in steam and found that for some bizarre reason this game saw the controller as a generic controller and a ps5 controller simultaneously, with the generic controller as the default for that game. I tried removing the steam config in addition to blacklisting the pc mode mac address in my udev rules.

When I did that, it technically blocked the extra config in steam but then I could not click the touchpad anymore in any game. Undoing that I found that when I tested in steam's controller settings that with the second generic controller existing the touch pad would work but the game still defaulted to the generic first instead of the ps5 scheme. Disabling steam input just ensures that the game can't recognize any controller output in the first place.

My question to you all is if anyone has any ideas on how to either make the ps5 the default in steam or to enable the touchpad with the other profile. I have tried looking things up but I am low on ideas. I don't see anything in particular in dmesg either since all it is really telling me is that the os recognizes my controller. I can use the controller normally with the other games I've tried in and outside of steam.

Cardwire - An eBPF-based GPU Manager for gaming laptops

Reddit Linux_Gaming - 03. Mai 2026 - 21:47

Hello, I’m sharing a project I’ve been developing for the past few months

It’s a GPU manager that uses the kernel eBPF+LSM to block GPU access, it aims to be an alternative to tools such as the deprecated supergfxctl. These tools handle this by unbinding the pci device or unloading the driver, which typically requires a reboot or a logout, with Cardwire, rebooting is not necessary

How it works: it attaches an eBPF program to the kernel to intercept file operation on GPU node such as /dev/dri/renderD or /dev/dri/card, and returns -ENOENT, applications cannot see or use the GPU

This keeps the GPU in its D3cold power state, without touching the driver or the PCI sysfs

I made it for two main reasons: - i didn't want to restart/logout every time i wanted to disable/enable the dGPU - Apps such as Electron apps could wake the dGPU up on launch, which would increase the launch time as the GPU is being awakened

It's still experimental and some apps can still bypass it, feel free to open an issue on github

Here is the repo link: https://github.com/OpenGamingCollective/cardwire

HDR on Linux?

Reddit Linux_Gaming - 03. Mai 2026 - 20:48

Hello to you all. I am new to linux gaming and have a few questions about using HDR on linux. ı am using Bazzite and have a Ryzen 5 7600 + Rtx 4070 Super EVO OC for some background knowledge.
It is my understanding that you have to use Proton GE and add "PROTON_ENABLE_WAYLAND=1 PROTON_ENABLE_HDR=1 DXVK_HDR=1 ENABLE_HDR_WSI=1 %command%" as a launch command on steam to use HDR on games. But how about games where you can not do that? A game like Helldivers 2 doesnt launch with Proton GE so I cant use HDR on that game outright? Or Tekken 8 for example, doesnt let me enable hdr and use a dual sense controller, its gotta be one or the other. I cant use HDR on that game either? How about games purchased outside steam? Do I have to add them to steam, add that launch command and use Proton GE exclusively to use HDR on games from Epic Store I play via Heroic Launcher for example?
I guess what I am asking is, if there is a more seamless way to utilize the HDR on my monitor which I paid money for? Its annoying to pay for something and not use it to its full capabilities. I dont remember doing all this crap on my Steam Deck to use HDR so why do I have to do them in my linux desktop?
