How well does VR gaming work on Linux?

Reddit Linux_Gaming - 30. November 2024 - 09:50

I still want to play Half Life Alyx sometime, and I'm considering getting a VR headset. I don't dual boot, but run exclusively Linux. No Microsoft in this household. How is the VR experience on Linux, do drivers and games just work, does it need a lot of tinkering? Or does it not work at all?

In the worst case, I can get VR for my PS5, but I prefer gaming on PC.

Proton file error

Reddit Linux_Gaming - 30. November 2024 - 09:38

I’m trying to make protonGE work on my Chromebook. Apparently, to do this, I have to “extract a downloaded tarball”. To this end, I have been trying “tar -xf (filename) -C (directory name).”

“Filename” being the name of the downloaded file “GE-Proton9-20.tar.gz”. Unfortunately, this is not working. I get a “no such file or directory” error. Attempting to change permissions gives them same error.

I’ve been following this guide makeuseof.com/install-proton-ge-on-steamos-linux

Wait, my problem isn’t that I’m on chrome os, right? I’m going to feel so dumb if that’s what that is.

Counter-Strike 2 low FPS on Lenovo T14 Gen 1 laptop?

Reddit Linux_Gaming - 30. November 2024 - 07:39

Hi friends,

I'm not sure if this is normal for my specs or if I have a problem but I am getting fairly low FPS on Counter-Strike 2 on my Lenovo T14 Gen 1 with a 4750U, 32GB RAM, 512GB SSD. At 1080p low settings, I am getting 15-18 FPS in the main menu and once I get in-game I'm getting around 28-29 fps on 1080p low settings with me + 9 bots on Dust 2 deathmatch. At 720p low settings with me + 9 bots on Dust 2 deathmatch, I'm still only getting around 30-35 FPS. That seems kind of low to me, or am I mistaken? Is there a larger overhead from Linux vs Windows than I realized?

Here's a benchmark video of someone getting like 35-45+ FPS on Counter-Strike 2 with a 4700U 1080p low settings Dust 2 with 9 bots, but they are on Windows I believe: https://youtu.be/UkIFThvEY3c?t=158

My desktop has a R9 5900x and RTX 4070 so I get amazing performance on Ubuntu 22.04 with NVIDIA 550 drivers, no problems there as expecetd.

Here are my laptop specs:

Does anyone have any ideas of things I can check? I know it's not a gaming laptop but it seems like I might be losing out on some performance somehow.

Installed Linux for the first time in a decade.

Reddit Linux_Gaming - 30. November 2024 - 07:01

Hi everyone! My hardware is 6th gen and it still works very well. I thought it would be a waste of good hardware to just chuck it and get a new machine because Microsoft thinks my hardware is too old to run Windows 11. Well I installed Pop OS tonight and I am absolutely floored by how easy it was to install my games. I downloaded Steam and the compatibility programs were a breeze to use. I have Vampire Survivors, Balatro, and Final Fantasy XIV installed and they all run great. Even Discord works and all of my hardware including my headset!

I couldn't be happier and don't need to worry about the Windows 10 end of support nonsense next year. Linux really has come a long way from when I last used it.

Playing in a rolling release OS makes a total difference for Nvidia (PopOS 22.0 to Garuda 40)

Reddit Linux_Gaming - 30. November 2024 - 06:23

I've made a post recently that I tried playing No Man's Sky on PopOS 22.04 with Nvidia drivers pre-installed, it was a bad experience overall.

I'm now on Garuda 40 (Fedora + pre built Nvidia) an it's amazing, I don't want to cause bad luck but I think I'm finally free from Windows bullshit, I've never thought Linux could perform so well for games and I think that it's just tend to get better and better.

In my previous post some people agreed that Nvidia could be shit on Linux, but honestly, at least for No Man's Sky it seems pretty good, running just like Windows, except for a few micro stuttering for new areas, but just the very first time I go to a given area, if I revisit it, the micro stuttering goes away.

Thank you guys who recommended me a better distro for gaming.

Did anyone get Rumble/Vibration working on 'GameSir Nova Lite' controller via 2.4Ghz dongle?

Reddit Linux_Gaming - 30. November 2024 - 06:13

I’m facing an issue with my GameSir T4 Nova Lite controller. Everything works perfectly fine when it’s connected via a wired USB connection, including vibration feedback. However, when I connect the controller using the 2.4 GHz wireless dongle, it switches to Android mode (yellow light), and I’m unable get vibration working.

Even when I try to force it into other modes, it doesn’t register any input.

Has anyone encountered this issue? Is there a way to fix it so that I can use the controller with the dongle while retaining full functionality (including vibration)?

I tried following, didn't help.

  • Xone,
  • xpad
  • xpadneo
  • xboxdrv

Hogwarts Legacy suddenly stops 1 hour into gameplay

Reddit Linux_Gaming - 30. November 2024 - 04:59

I am a Linux Mint user. Everything up to date

I got the game on sale, and got just over an hour of gameplay in before it refused to startup again..

If the game actually boots, it always shows the epilepsy warning, followed by an endless black screen with the menu music playing

Crash report says something about Gnome and flatpak being End of life?

I've tried various Proton versions, and installing an older version of my graphics driver (as I was already fully up to date

GPU:GeForce 3050

Any fixes or thoughts? 🙏

What would you recommend between steamfork or bazzite for a ROG ally?

Reddit Linux_Gaming - 30. November 2024 - 04:50

I'm looking into the documentation right now (for bazzite) and it looks like a lot of manual tweaks and configurations are needed in order to reach the full potential of the device and it also looks like bazzite makes use of workarounds in order for most stuff to work.

Steamfork just looks like a straight port of steam os but I can't find enough documentation to give me a good idea of the pros and cons of each.

I'm looking for your experiences and opinions in order to avoid making a poor decision.

How do I play mario 64 rom hacks specifically b3313?

Reddit Linux_Gaming - 30. November 2024 - 03:50

Yknow on the surface it sounds easy, right?

So I tried using retrodeck's retroarch. Turns out retroarch doesn't work at all with large rom hacks like b3313. But you can download a custom core of parallel that has the option to allow large roms. Didn't work, doesn't even act as a core. Yes I've tried compressing them via retrodeck but that didn't do anything. I hear project 64 is probably best for rom hacks. I'm like sure I would have preferred it all be in retrodeck. well. It doesn't have a linux version. I'm all out of ideas. Please help yall T.T

OpenRGB not launching

Reddit Linux_Gaming - 30. November 2024 - 03:36

So I planned to install CachyOS, I have been trying to get it setup from past 2 days, already bricked the OS installing armor app and open rgb, now I'm reinstalling it for 3rd time.

I wanted to install open rgb. I installed all the dependencies from arch wiki, it worked but only one effect worked, the rainbow effect for 2 components. My hyperx pulsegire surge mouse does not work with it for some reason. All partially good for now. On my windows I was able to install the open rgb effects plug-in. On linux I was somehow able to get the openrgb plugin git from arch wiki. Now I was able to clone the git, built the package and installed it. Now after that the open rgb does not want to launch, no matter what I tried.

I tried uninstalling the package wirh pacman -Rns and -Rsu

Reinstalled all dependencies and tried again. Now everytime with the plug in the openrgb got bricked. I looked up the file structure of ope rgb, deleted all files manually. It does not launch no matter what. It briefly pops up and closes with an error SIGABRT from fish.

Now I'm on my reinstall again. Has anyone got openrgb to work with its plug-ins on arch linux ?

I cannot get ubisoft connect to start

Reddit Linux_Gaming - 30. November 2024 - 03:04

I've been trying to play Assassin's creed 2 recently but it won't start without ubisoft connect. I have tried downloading it through lutris and wine but both had similar results. Downloading it works fine but when it comes to start it then it breaks. The ubisoft launcher the steam version tries to download is outdated and doesn't work. Does anyone have any ideas? I'm running arch if that helps

Reddit Linux_Gaming - 30. November 2024 - 02:30

I have never used any linux os so, I dont have any idea which one is the best for my need.

Setting up steam big picture login session

Reddit Linux_Gaming - 29. November 2024 - 21:45

So the 2 methods I've tried both have their issues.

Method 1 (x11): I added a .desktop file to /usr/share/xsessions/ that runs "steam -bigpicture" Issues: - steam doesn't fill up the whole screen only too left corner - while game is playing I can hear the seam menu moving in the background when I press the dpad (ie while moving character I hear "bloop bloop bloop")

Method 2 (Wayland compositor): I added a .desktop to /user/share/wayland-sessions/ that runs "gamescope -e -- steam -bigpicture" Issues: - no controller input - screen goes black unless mouse is constantly moving (I've tried both gamescope and gamescope-nvidia packages)

EndeavorOS with SDDM

Which method would be the better route? Is there a different method? How could I solve these issues?

Already Tried this guide several times,i got it to work at some point but force feedback didn't work.Later on i messed with my bottles files and had to redo, launcher didn't open this time. Also tried to run through Steam (having installed with Bottles like earlier) following the final steps of this other guide. The launcher worked after installing dotnet7 with protontricks, but the game wouldn't open when clicking Lunch RBR or when added as an executable on the same prefix.
