Hi I expect to be half a milion posts like this one but I would like to ask you all for some sort of the final confirmation.

I am considering switching to linux gaming with how f-up windows and microsoft is.

I have some experience with ubuntu and decided to use Nobara (what do you think about this one?) as well as keeping win11 23h2 on second drive for league of legends and WMR for simracing. Is keeping win11 on second drive and dual booting to it a privacy risk assuming I wont login to microsoft account and activate windows via CMD?

How good or bad this config would be? Thanks for any help

Hi, I've been using Arch with KDE and Wayland for quite some time now and have an nvidia Gpu and after a rough start never had any major issues.

However unlike on X11 I can't edit any values in the nvidia-settings program while in Wayland and am not sure if I'm not losing a bit of Performance due to that (I use the proprietary driver). There's also the issue of my Steam link which I use to stream my screen to my TV on the other side of the house that doesn't work at all in Wayland, but without issues on X11.

The main thing keeping me from switching to X11 is that I use 2 Monitors, one with 144hz and one with 60hz as well as a Valve Index (VR games Run well on wayland, haven't tested in X11) that goes up to 240hz afaik.

What do you suggest?

I thought setting up vr on linux was going to be a hassle, impossible to set up, and the performance was going to be terrible.

Now it was a hassle initially getting it to set up, but I just made it harder on myself because I didn't know anything. I tried through envision but then got rid of it and installed the flatpak version but then had to figure out how to fix the audio which was fixed using pipewire pulse audio instead of pulseaudio

I've only tried two games which is blade and sorcery, and hard bullet. Blade and sorcery controls for changing spells was bugged and performance I had to turn down settings more than normal. Hard bullet ran fine with some lag, but that may be because I didn't turn down the graphics as much

This was wireless on a WLAN instead of a ethernet like it's supposed to be. I'm sure performance would be better if I wired it one of the two ways

Hi!

Recently I switched to Linux, and I play Left 4 Dead 2, I tried several distros like Mint, Arch and now I'm on Ubuntu, all the distros have one common problem for me: the game sets 5.1 as a default audio output instead of Headphones every time I start the game.

And now only on Ubuntu I have a new problem: when I switch the layout from English to Russian, the game ceases to understand the layout and I can't even move unless I switch it back. I tried Steam Support, but they say common things and redirect me to developers giving me no contacts.

Any help is appreciated.

This begun last Week, before that everything worked fine,i build my pc a month ago so hardware should be good.

Things i tried:

downgrading amg-gpu-firmware and mesa.

I also had an Issue with Steam that made it unresponsive if not running from cli or if minimized which i fixed by turning off hardware-accel. which propably has some things to do with the crashes.

Just wanted to express my amazement at how great of an experience I have so far gaming on Linux!

I've used Linux on and off for years, mostly for productivity and programming stuff. Always loved everything about it, from how smooth and lightweight it is to the terminal and package managers. But I've never really given gaming on it a try. So today I grabbed an old SSD, put it in my PC, installed Ubuntu 24.10 on it together with Steam, and that's genuinely all I needed to do to get gaming! I was shocked :D

Performance is on par, if not better than Windows (and I haven't had any of the AMD driver issues windows has had for months, like crashing and driver timeouts). There's only a couple issues with anti cheat like with PUBG, and while I can play Star Citizen itself just fine, my eye/head tracker (Tobii 5) is not supported at all on Linux so for those two at least I'll have to keep Windows dual booted.

But long story short, I think it might finally be time to consider Linux my main OS sometime soon :)
