The --expose-wayland Gamescope flag is not working. Is it needed or can I use gamescope without it?

Reddit Linux_Gaming - 28. Mai 2024 - 05:08

I'm using wayland with nvidia beta drivers. When I use the --expose-wayland flag I get a blank screen. Games only run if I remove the flag. What exactly does the --expose-wayland flag do and is it even needed? Also since I'm already using wayland, should I even use gamescope? Do I get the same gamescope performance benefits in normal wayland?

One last thing, the --sdr-gamut-wideness flag seems to do nothing now. It used to change the colors, but now I notice no difference. Is this a bug? I should also mention I'm using the kwin-explicit-sync package rather than normal kwin. I don't know if that means anything.

Is the GTX 10 series too old to support VRR with nvidia proprietary driver on linux?

Reddit Linux_Gaming - 28. Mai 2024 - 03:50

It works fine in windows 11 on this card but the option to enable VRR is missing in Kde display settings for my Gsync compatible monitor. Using the "kscreen-doctor --outputs" command says my display is " Vrr: incapable" which I know is false.

I'm using Fedora 40 and plasma 6 under wayland with the 550.78 proprietary drivers using diplay port so it should work unless the card is the issue.

Hey, the only thing currently stopping me from switching to linux full time is this refresh rate issue I have

Reddit Linux_Gaming - 28. Mai 2024 - 03:49

All of my steam games run at a super low refresh rate while my desktop runs at what I set both of my 2 monitors to (144Hz) my PC specs are CPU AMD Ryzen 7 5800x 16 Core GPU AMD ATI Radeon RX 6900 XT 32 GB DDR4 RAM

My Experience with CachyOs so far

Reddit Linux_Gaming - 28. Mai 2024 - 03:45

My specs are:

OS: CachyOS

KERNEL: 6.9.2-2-cachyos

CPU: AMD Ryzen 7 3700X 8-Core

GPU: NVIDIA GeForce RTX 3060 Ti

GPU DRIVER: NVIDIA 555.42.02RAM: 16 GB

I installed CachyOs yesterday due to fact that it has the Nvidia 555 drivers preinstalled, and because I heard good things about it (it's really fast!)

I've played Battlefront 2, Ghost of Tsushima, Minecraft with Prism Launcher, Hades, and Elden ring. I can say this with ease, this is easily the best experience gaming on Linux that i've had.

However, I will say that I've have had issues with Ghost of Tsushima. Not in performance (it's obviously less then Windows, and I'm using Wayland), but in refresh rate, It says I'm getting over 100 fps, but it looks like the refresh rate is 60 hz (My monitor is 165 and my other monitor is 144hz), other then that, it's been fine.

I've went back and forth with installing distros in the past, only to go back to windows. Now, I can safely say i'm sticking with Linux!

Laptop Suggestions

Reddit Linux_Gaming - 28. Mai 2024 - 03:23

I am looking for a laptop replacement for my existing system.

Razer Blade 16 - 14900HX - 96GB Ram - 4090

Issue I have is above laptop I cannot get Audio to work and also when I try to use proton with gaming on steam I get a flashing screen and weird artifacts. I am thinking it’s due to Razers proprietary implementation.

I wanted to go full AMD as I have seen AMD be more compatible. But I am open to anything really. I just wanted to have a peak performing system but also be thin and light similar to Razer Blade or maybe a Zephyrus G16.

I love the 16:10 screen ratio.

For gaming I mostly do GTA5, and some counter strike. My miniforum V3 has worked great on most Linux OS’s running these.

I looked at the Oryx and some others but wanted to see what everyone here recommended. I wish there was a AMD 8000 series with a 4090 or 7900 out there in the wild but nothing I could find.

Thank you community and the time to read this.

My normal work is running office programs and Linux applications that I have tested.

Trying to Launch Final Fantasy XI. ProtonDB says it's GOLD/PLATNIUM

Reddit Linux_Gaming - 28. Mai 2024 - 03:11

Hello All!

I'm currently trying to play Final Fantasy XI through steam. The ProtonDB link for the game: https://www.protondb.com/app/230330 has the status of gold. However, when I run the game, it tells asks me which option I want to start out of:

  1. Play Final Fantasy XI: Ultimate Collection Seekers Edition NA
  2. Launch PlayOnline Config Utility
  3. Launch Final Fantasy XI Config Utility

I pick the first one.

And it displays the CD Keys for my game. Understandable. When I hit close on the CD keys screen, 2 seconds pass and then the "X STOP" Icon in steam turns to "Play" which indicates the game stopped/crashed.

I attempted to follow the steam's troubleshooting guide
https://www.protondb.com/help/troubleshooting-faq#how-do-i-create-logs-of-a-game-i-run-with-proton

to get a log of ProtonDB by adding these launch arguments:

PROTON_LOG=1 %command%

And it said it would put a file prefixed with 'steam' in my home directory.

After doing the process again I didn't find a file like that in my home directory.

So unfortunately I'm not able to post any logs of the issue. Could someone direct me to other way to get diagnostic information?

Background Info.

I'm running ArchLinux x84_64 architexture with Gnome + Wayland if that's relevant.

Thanks for any help :D I'm wanting to get this game working on steam like the others. I imagine there's a simple fix I need to do since ProtonDB still has a gold/platinum score for it

Considering Debian for Nvidia RTX 2070S

Reddit Linux_Gaming - 28. Mai 2024 - 03:07

Hey,

I've read a couple of the threads on here, going to be installing on my main computer soon.

These are the main things that I'm considering

-I like the apt install system -I like the non bloat approach of Debian -I don't want to go down the PopOS route because of their DE move from Gnome -Something long term like a rolling release would be nice

However, I was worried about performance/compatibility loss because of their fully open source approach.

I'd like to know which is the best way to obtain the drivers, I've heard the official download to be a bit hit and miss from the Nvidia website and I'd prefer the repo route if possible

Would love you hear your thoughts :)

Kinda stuck on choosing between 2 distros, maybe someone can help

Reddit Linux_Gaming - 28. Mai 2024 - 02:23

I've landed on 2 choices for my daily driver, CachyOS and openSUSE. I am having a hard time picking between the two because of the following:

  1. Snapper. openSUSE supporting snapper in the boot menu ootb. I find this extremely important for rolling-release distros in case something goes wrong and I need to rollback a change. I know that CachyOS has a 1 click install to setup snapper, but it doesn't seem to setup snapper in the boot menu and it also backs up the home folder which I really don't want.

  2. Nvidia drivers. CachyOS supporting Nvidia drivers ootb with no hassle of installation built into the kernel. I really like this because I will never need to manually touch the Nvidia drivers for updates. For openSUSE it seems confusing as there is an "easy way" and a "hard way" to install which I am sure there are benefits to using one over the other, but I cannot find anything on them. I just see people recommending the "hard way" and something about it building with the Kernel. Going through YaST actually seems confusing because of all the various Nvidia listings and I am not sure what all I actually need.

Secondary Steam HDD File System

Reddit Linux_Gaming - 28. Mai 2024 - 00:11

I want to use my internal 3.5" 4TB 7200 HDD backup drive for both Windows and Linux (No OS is installed on this drive), something I can install games on that don't benefit from a fast NVME/SSD along with other files that can be shared between Windows and Linux and I can connect GOG and Steam to on both OS.

It's currently NTFS, which I found works for native Linux games but doesn't work for anything that require Proton/Wine, and I am not going to play around with FSTAB like the Valve Proton Github says, as I borked my system twice when I last tried, I am too green for FSTAB.

So I thought of 3 options.

  1. Split the drive into 2 partitions, one BTRFS the other NTFS
  2. Make the drive BTRFS and install WinBTRFS which most posts I read say can corrupt data. I can also install WinBTRFS for option 1 also.
  3. I can make the drive EXFAT. I feel this is the best option.

But I have found no information online if EXFAT is a viable option for a internal 7200rpm drive. I read the read/write is slower than other FS but it's used for External Drives which I find to be reasonably fast. So will it slow down this drive? It gets around 150MB/S average and peaks around 180MB/S. As for security, it's just going to be a place to store Games, ROMs, MODs and other fun things, so I am not too worried about that?

What do you all think of this option? Is it going to bottleneck my HDD too much? Is it a good option at all?

Steam Big Picture is really slow

Reddit Linux_Gaming - 28. Mai 2024 - 00:01

Steam in desktop mode runs just fine. However, when I enter big picture mode the UI is very laggy and seems to maybe run at like 10 fps. I don't know what happened but I do remember steam big picture running smoothly in the past.

System Specs:

  • Pop OS 22.04
  • Kernel Version 6.8.0
  • Mesa Version 24.0.8 (kisak PPA)
  • AMD 7900 XTX GPU
  • AMD 5950x CPU
  • using Wayland (but X11 is also really laggy)
  • Steam is installed locally (not using a flatpak)

These steam settings are enabled in the Interface section:

  • Enable smooth scrolling in web views
  • Enable GPU accelerated rendering in web views
  • Enable hardware video decoding, if supported

I've tried running Steam stable branch as well as Steam Beta Update and both versions behave similarly.

Is anyone else having this problem? Does anyone know how to solve this issue?

MangoHUD 0.7.2

Reddit Linux_Gaming - 27. Mai 2024 - 23:53

https://github.com/flightlessmango/MangoHud/releases/tag/v0.7.2

Changes
  • time now has a label (you can remove this label with time_no_label)
  • Wayland keybinds have been added
  • rewritten exec function to have a persistent shell. Should reduce frametime spikes when using exec
  • exec is now right aligned to conform with every other item
  • meson options with_x11 and with_wayland actually have a purpose now
  • added Pop!_OS and SteamOS to build script
  • added a mutex for config to prevent some crashes when accessing config at the same time as reloading
  • winesync and refresh_rate have been changed to small font
  • added more stats to log summary
  • stop using intel_gpu_top, as it was causing too many issues. We can still get GPU load but the rest we'll have to wait for to be exposed in sysfs
Fixes
  • frametime color wasn't being correctly inherited, the user was not able to change it's color
  • fixed a crash when pressing Shift_R + F9
  • config options now correctly override preset options
  • fixed RPM and % being incorrectly assigned for GPU fan speeds
  • graphs had incorrect padding at start of graphs
  • fixed a crash when reloading the config while logging
  • check that cpu input gives a non-zero value
  • fixed minecraft-launcher crashing
  • graphs had incorrect padding leading to a smaller graph
  • fixed a build issue where some meson options would exclude opengl files incorrectly
  • fixed presets not working with MANGOHUD_CONFIG env
Parameters
  • time_no_label removes the label before time
  • network shows the throughput in kb/s for all interfaces or a specified list of interfaces e.g network=eth0,wlo1

Dual Boot Tiny11 and Garuda

Reddit Linux_Gaming - 27. Mai 2024 - 22:24

Hey everyone, I am considering adding a super small partition of Tiny11 to just play roblox on it with my family. Since I have an Nvidia GPU waydroid does not run well for me so I considered running a small install of tiny11 maybe like a 20 gig at most partition on my root drive just for this. Will this give me any type of problems? and how should I go about it.

Thanks for any help and your time.

How to install steam on Debian?

Reddit Linux_Gaming - 27. Mai 2024 - 22:18

I'm way too underexperienced to set up debian after the person who helped me had to leave but I'm trying anyway.

This time I'm struggling with installing steam. I tried following several tutorials but they all end at this error message in the image. When I run steam, it complains that it doesn't have the permissions but it's not happy with my user permissions and I cannot execute steam as root. What do?

pdh.dll fails to install with Winetricks

Reddit Linux_Gaming - 27. Mai 2024 - 22:15

Hello,

I've been trying to set up XDefiant, but it keeps on crashing when entering a lobby. After a quick search, I found that I needed to install pdh.dll, however it first gives me this message when I try to install:

Checksum for /home/person/.cache/winetricks/win7sp1/windows6.1-KB976932-X86.exe did not match, retrying download

After I click "OK", it gives me this message:

If you are willing to accept the risk, you can bypass this check.

Alternatively, you may use the --force option to ignore this check entirely.

Continue anyway?

Any help would be appreciated! I am using OpenSUSE Tumbleweed.
