What’s your “oh hell yeah that’s nice” experience with Linux

Reddit Linux_Gaming - 28. Januar 2025 - 23:36

Like it could be the neat VK Gamecapture tool to give you something akin to game capture on windows though OBS.

Or maybe openseface the python program that sends facial data to stuff like Vtube studio.

What other neat tools have you found that you would love to share?

8BitDo controller fixes for Linux + my impressions on Linux gaming.

Reddit Linux_Gaming - 28. Januar 2025 - 23:33

Hi!

I've been distro hopping a lot, a few years couldn't really settle in: Zorin OS, PopOS, Ubuntu Budgie.

I switched back to Win10 for a while.

Now I'm back, found my distro finally: CachyOS. Thanks Mattscreative on yt. I'm subscribed to his channel for any useful tips, his channel is gold mine for me.

Still keeping Win10 as a dual boot just in case with rEFInd.

I have found Linux gaming to be more fun than Windows one for sure, had a couple games with shader compilation stutter I bought on sale and they run absolutely flawless on Linux thanks to Valve caching in shaders on their servers.

I surprisingly love to tinker but just a bit. CachyOS seems pretty stable, so not much tinkering is needed.

Personally I had to only fix my 8BitDo Ultimate 3mode controller support.

Fixes for 8BitDo controllers running under Linux.

sudo mkdir /etc/udev/rules.d

sudo nano /etc/udev/rules.d/99-8bitdo-xinput.rules

ACTION=="add", ATTRS{idVendor}=="2dc8", ATTRS{idProduct}=="3106", RUN+="/sbin/modprobe xpad", RUN+="/bin/sh -c 'echo 2dc8 3106 > /sys/bus/usb/drivers/xpad/new_id'"

sudo udevadm control --reload

Change Product ID according to your controller:

Product ID 8BitDo Ultimate/Ultimate C 2,4Ghz: 3106

Product ID 8BitDo Ultimate 3-Mode 2,4Ghz: 200f / alternate Product ID: 201b

Product ID 8BitDo Ultimate 2C 2,4GhZ: 310a

In case they're not connecting/are not recognized through 2,4G USB Dongle/WiFI on Linux - or Bluetooth.

I have found a bit of help here, so I'm crediting those sources: https://gist.github.com/ammuench/0dcf14faf4e3b000020992612a2711e2

200f code I found out myself, I even added post myself on GitHub.

I thought I would pitch in on r/linux_gaming and maybe help someone else with similar problem.

Plus I would share my thoughts. Loving it so far!

Team Fortress 2/TF2 Not Launching On Linux (Possible Fix) Posted 2025/01/28

Reddit Linux_Gaming - 28. Januar 2025 - 23:13

So I may have diagnosed the reason why Team Fortress 2 won't load on Linux.

The main reason is that if you're using a SNAP or Linux App Store version of Steam & outdated Video Drivers the game won't launch.

What you might need to do is uninstall Steam from the SNAP/App Store depending on your version of Linux & reinstall Steam from the Deb File from Valve's Steam Website.

Keep in mind that you'll need to remove all dependencies from the old Steam Install before you do this. Since I used Linux Mint I have no idea how to do it in other versions of Linux.

After you reinstall Steam from Steam's Website via the Deb File & run Video Driver Updates make sure you run sudo apt update && sudo apt upgrade -y in a terminal & reboot your system for good measure.

I hope this helps my fellow Team Fortress 2 Gamers.

I switched to Fedora from Windows for a few months. Now I'm back

Reddit Linux_Gaming - 28. Januar 2025 - 22:33

So I switched to Fedora 6 months ago, and I had to switch back.

I really wanted it to work, because I like the concept. Free, community created desktop and free of Microsoft bullshit, but I don't think it's ready for gaming.

If I wasn't gaming I wouldn't even care, but even though we have Lutris, Bottle, steam proton etc I just run to problem after problem. I value my time and I don't think it's fun to fix every little problem I have. I would rather enjoy just playing the game I want, and not spend 2 hours to launch Battle.net and download WoW.

In 10 years maybe I can return and not spend as much time tinkering as gaming.

Why do people create separate wine prefixes for each game? (Bottles)

Reddit Linux_Gaming - 28. Januar 2025 - 21:37

In my opinion it's closer to the windows-like experience with executables to have an "ultimate prefix" that can launch whatever you throw at it.

But a lot of people split them up, so I guess there are some good reasons for it.

What are they?

Desmume not showing

Reddit Linux_Gaming - 28. Januar 2025 - 20:29

Hi,

I'm on Linux Mint 22 Cinnamon 6.2.9 and I've just installed Desmume emulator using apt (after running apt update). But nothing is changed on my system. I can't find it under "games" and even searching does not show any result. If I try to run it from terminal it says "command not found".
I've looked for some tutorials but they just run the install command and it just works. I've also restarted the pc but nothing changes.
If I try to run the installation again it says that it's already installed, but why can't I see it?

Does anyone have an idea on what may be wrong?

Question about NitroSense

Reddit Linux_Gaming - 28. Januar 2025 - 19:30

I have a Acer Nitro laptop that comes with a app called NitroSense. In the app i can select 3 profiles and my game performance will depend on what profile i selected (Quiet - lowest performance , Balanced -good performance and Performance - the best one but its loud). So if i leave it on balanced beacuse i dont want my laptop to sound like a plane and then i switch to linux will it affect my gaming performance beacuse i tried in many ways to install nitrosense on multiple linux distros. Thanks!

Nintendo Switch Pro Controller issues 6.12.10 connecting but not working as intended

Reddit Linux_Gaming - 28. Januar 2025 - 19:21

So I have a 8bitdo Ultimate c bluetooth which gets recognised by everything as a nintendo switch po controller, and requires the hid_nintendo module to work.

the controller works on my laptop with linux and on the same machine on windows.

I am on endevourOS which is arch based
and had the controller working for months untill I broke it.

I had troubles with it not auto connecting through bluetooth, while trying to fix that it just stopped working fully. And trying to revent the changes didn't help.

im pretty sure what i did is installed joycond and hid-nintendo-nso-dkms not realising that its deprecated

udev rules are the and seam to be working

when the controller is connected udevadm monitor returns
KERNEL[5408.598276] add /devices/pci0000:00/0000:00:01.3/0000:02:00.0/usb1/1-9/1-9:1.0/bluetooth/hci0/hci0:256 (bluetooth)

UDEV [5408.609975] add /devices/pci0000:00/0000:00:01.3/0000:02:00.0/usb1/1-9/1-9:1.0/bluetooth/hci0/hci0:256 (bluetooth)

so to me it felt like the problem is with the hid_nintendo module but reinstaling linux and linux-firmware packages to try to rebuild it didnt help.

the kernel log is empty when connecting the controller, unlike on my laptop where you can see the input file get created.

Im also gonna add that im on cinamon
im probably missing something relevant so please tell me if so

CS2 input latency and FPS decrease compared to Windows

Reddit Linux_Gaming - 28. Januar 2025 - 19:07

Hi, I'm kinda new to Linux but definitely trying to use it as I'm planning to leave Windows for good after 10's support ends. My specs are:

Ryzen 5 7600, DDR5 32 GB 6000 MHz, GTX 1650 and I'm testing dual booting with Linux Mint 22.1 Cinnamon right now. I know the GPU is not top, and the FPS difference might happen in particular games, but I wonder if it's mostly because of the X11 that is being used in Mint. I'll be changing the GPU to some Radeon soon, 7000 perhaps the new 9000, and as I get it I'll be running Bazzite which is XWayland and I've read it works better with AMD and is basically more stable on Linux.

Hogwart's Legacy on windows runs on low 1080P with around 40-60 FPS, when on Linux it's 30. Similiar with Cyberpunk.

CS2 actually seems to be working pretty fine but the latency. It's like around 80-100 ms delay in shoting compared to Windows. For instance using AWP and quickly changing weapon after shooting causes not shoting at all and changing weapon instantly. So here are my concerns:

  1. Might the latency be caused by using wireless mouse (Endorfy LIX)? It doesn't seem to occur on keyboard tho.
  2. Should the FPS drops between OS's be that large? Or it's mostly due to GPU not behaving properly because of using Proton.
  3. How does the Vulkan shaders work? Does it need to compile before running any game downloaded on Steam?

Performance troubles with CP2077

Reddit Linux_Gaming - 28. Januar 2025 - 18:57

Well met fellow penguins.

I'm playing Cyberpunk on my fedora based computer and it runs OK. I get around 80 fps with RT turned off, and the game feels responsive.

Ryzen 7 7900x3d, Radeon 9800xt, 64 GB ram, 4-gen nvme, 3660x1440.

Display is KDE/wayland and the GPU-driver is amdgpu. Everything is up to date (Fedora 41 for what it's worth)

From time to time the performance just drops to unplayable, with continuous micro-stutters and the game feels incredibly unresponsive. This generally happens anywhere between 10 to 45 minutes after starting to play. At that point the only fix i have found is to save and re-start the game, and it then runs fine again for ... lets say 20 or 30 minutes.

Note that I've got the game running under a Cgroup bound to the first 12 cores dedicated to the game, so it has exclusive access to the 3dv-cache.

Anything I need to check?

Help me run Linux version of game from Itch.

Reddit Linux_Gaming - 28. Januar 2025 - 18:28

I'm running Mint Linux 22.1, kernal 6.8.0-52-generic. I'm not afraid of the terminal; still super new to Linux. I have Super Rad Raygun from itch and downloaded the Linux version. The instructions from itch are

Linux: Extract the files and execute ". SuperRadRaygun" from the terminal

So I've downloaded it. Extracted the zip. I'm in the correct folder of the Terminal (~/Downloads/SuperRadRaygun_Linux). I type

. SuperRadRaygun

The message is

bash: ./SuperRadRaygun.bin.x86_64: Permission denied

I then try

sudo . SuperRadRaygun

The message is

sudo: .: command not found
  • What else can I try to run it?
  • What am I doing wrong to run it?

Here is the contents of the folder: https://pastebin.com/YVXr4WUb

(I am using pastebin because cannot get code to work nicely in reddit.) Thanks.
