[Help] Age of Empires 4 consistently freezing exactly at 16-18 min mark - Nvidia Xid 109 Error (Exclusive to AoE4, persists across drivers)

Reddit Linux_Gaming - 01. Mai 2026 - 18:00

Hi everyone,

I’m experiencing a very weird, rigid, and consistent freezing issue with Age of Empires IV on CachyOS. The game completely freezes exactly around the 16 to 18-minute mark, hangs the desktop for a few seconds, and then crashes.

Here is my system specs and the error log, followed by all the crucial context and troubleshooting steps I've already taken.

System Specs:

  • OS: CachyOS (KDE Wayland)
  • GPU: Nvidia GeForce RTX 3060 Ti
  • Drivers Tested: 595.58.03 (Nvidia Open Kernel Module) AND previously on 580 series.
  • Motherboard: MSI B550 Gaming Edge WiFi

The Error Log: When the crash happens, sudo dmesg | grep NVRM gives me this exact error: NVRM: Xid (PCI:0000:2b:00): 109, pid=16456, name=Game/Main Threa, channel 0x00000039, errorString CTX SWITCH TIMEOUT, Info 0x34c046

Crucial Context & What I've Tried:

  1. Strict 16-18 Min Mark (NOT Age 3 Transition): I initially thought it was tied to the Castle Age transition effects. However, even if I do a "Fast Castle" build and reach Age 3 at the 7-8 minute mark, the game STILL waits and crashes strictly around the 16-18 minute mark. It behaves like a timed memory leak or a buffer filling up.
  2. Persists Across Updates (and lack thereof): The issue has been haunting me since the 580 driver series. Sometimes a tweak makes it look like it's temporarily fixed, but the exact same crash randomly returns later, even without running any system updates (pacman -Syu).
  3. Exclusive to AoE4: This Xid 109 timeout issue ONLY happens in Age of Empires 4. I can play other demanding games for hours without a single hiccup, GPU hang, or crash.
  4. VRAM & Temps: Lowered texture settings to Medium. MangoHud shows VRAM usage at only 2.9 / 8.0 GB during the crash. It is definitely not an OOM issue. GPU temps are completely fine (43°C - 50°C).
  5. Proton Versions: Tested proton-cachyos-10.0-v3, the latest GE-Proton 10-34, and even older versions like GE-Proton 9. No difference.
  6. Hardware / BIOS Tweaks: Suspecting a PCIe timeout issue with the proprietary drivers, I forced the PCIe slot speed to Gen 3 (down from Gen 4) and disabled Re-Size BAR. Shaders cleared. Steam launch options cleared. The crash still persists.

Since I have ruled out VRAM limits, specific in-game events, PCIe Gen4 instability, and Proton versions, I am completely out of ideas. Could this be a specific VKD3D translation bug or a chronic kernel timeout trigger deeply rooted in how AoE4 interacts with Nvidia drivers on Linux?

Has anyone conquered this specific 16-18 min Xid 109 issue? Any insights would be heavily appreciated!

New Nvidia driver 595.71.05 Fixed all my rtx 5050 issues

Reddit Linux_Gaming - 01. Mai 2026 - 17:09

System Configuration:

  • GPU: NVIDIA GeForce RTX 5050
  • Driver: 595.71.05
  • CPU: AMD Ryzen 5 3500X
  • OS: Debian GNU/Linux (Testing)

The latest driver update fixed the major issues I was having with my RTX 5050 on Linux.

On driver 595, these games failed to run:

  • Elden Ring (Only worked on 580 series)
  • Ratchet & Clank: Rift Apart (Only worked on 580 series)
  • Lies of P (Only worked on 580 series)

Only Resident Evil Requiem was functional on 595 but not in the 580. Now, with the new update, every single one of these is working perfectly.

Zordeer version 6.7 and a request for help.

Reddit Linux_Gaming - 01. Mai 2026 - 16:38

Yo! I released a new version of Zordeer. It doesn't have many new features; since my last post, I've basically only made internal improvements.

The only new things are being able to use the UMU launcher from the $PATH and being able to use `--start-random-invocation` or `--stop-invocation` after the Zordeer command.

I'm making this post because I wanted to know if any app publisher/maintainer on the AUR could publish Zordeer there.

The most recent tag has a PKGBUILD file; I would appreciate it if someone could test if it's working.

Quit lying to people about performance.

Reddit Linux_Gaming - 01. Mai 2026 - 16:31

Title. I tried Mint. I tried CachyOS. I tried Arch. I even tried different proton launchers. Fact is performance is not 'within 7% difference' of Windows if you are using Hardware that isn't older OR AMD. It's drastically different.

i9-13900K and GTX 3070 on World of Warcraft Retail in Midnight Silvermoon City. Same settings. On Windows 10 with Medium Settings on DirectX12 I get 130 FPS with no stuttering. On Linux I get 90 FPS with stuttering.

I'm making this post not to complain, but to beseech those of you here who have done a very convincing job trying to convert people to stop lying about performance issues on Nvidia and Intel Hardware. Stop lying about timelines for fixes. Just stop. The fact is Windows 10 will offer people with the newest hardware and people generally on Intel and Nvidia Setups far superior performance. It's vastly different.

I don't have anything else to say. I am prepared for massive downvotes. I don't care. I just want this to show up on search results for people instead of the countless other threads full of people lying about performance that led to me using multiple Linux Distros when the the whole reason I risked for the swap was greatly exaggerated.

Full Linux transition: Advice on "heavy" game feel?

Reddit Linux_Gaming - 01. Mai 2026 - 16:19

Hey guys, I’m trying to move away from Windows and fully commit to Linux. I recently tested out CachyOS, but I ran into some issues. The games felt sluggish, the input lag was noticeable, and the overall performance felt lower than what I get on Windows.
I want to love the system, but I’m struggling to get that "snappy" feel back. Here are my specs for context:
-CPU: AMD Ryzen 7 5800X
-GPU: AMD Radeon 9060 XT (16GB VRAM)
-RAM: 32GB DDR4
-Display: 1080p @ 180Hz
Am I missing some specific optimizations or drivers? Is there a better desktop environment (KDE/GNOME) or distro I should try for the lowest possible latency?
I appreciate any tips you can give to a Linux newcomer!

AMD just posted official HDMI 2.1 (FRL) support to LKML!

Reddit Linux_Gaming - 01. Mai 2026 - 16:11

And for some reason, they even CC'd me haha. Maybe a little nod for my and my friends work on FRL and gaming features like HDMI VRR and ALLM.

Still, we're eating good this year!

Linux Growth Projection: Linux Gaming to Surpass Xbox By 2030.

Reddit Linux_Gaming - 01. Mai 2026 - 15:57

By using CAGR and recent Steam survey data on Linux, Linux gaming users are on track to outnumber Xbox unit sales by 2030.

The main thing I forgot to bring up in that video is that the Steam Deck has sold about 5 million units, which is already roughly 1/7 of estimated Xbox units sold.

Future successes by Valve could push that number even higher over time. This research is why I felt confident shipping native binaries for a game I’m working on, and I hope it may be useful to others.

I have problem that elden ring refuses to run on my main gpu, but it runs on integrated.

Reddit Linux_Gaming - 01. Mai 2026 - 15:56

When I try to load in game using main it freezes and refuses to work, but works on integrated. Tuf a16 Ryzen 7 260RTX 5060. Nobara 43. I would use integrated if I wasn't so bad, like 30 maybe 40 fps at most.

Built a small tool to detect Wine / Proton vs native Windows for testing game behavior differences

Reddit Linux_Gaming - 01. Mai 2026 - 15:21

I’ve been messing around with Wine/Proton behavior differences and put together a small tool that tries to detect whether a Windows binary is running natively or under Wine / Proton / other Wine based environments.

Repo: https://github.com/lain804/winedetect

It uses a mix of heuristics like Wine specific exports and some Win32 behavior differences. Nothing fancy or definitive, just a combined signal approach.

Main use case for me was testing why some Windows games or tools behave slightly differently under Proton compared to native Windows, and having a quick way to confirm the environment.

It is not meant for blocking or DRM style use, just debugging and experimentation around compatibility layers.

Open to feedback if anyone has seen more reliable signals or edge cases where Wine and native Windows are basically indistinguishable.

Linux Fedora / Ubuntu Tips to use Faugus Launcher to run Windows apps and games

Reddit Linux_Gaming - 01. Mai 2026 - 13:56

–TEXT VERSION– SRT extracted from video

:INSTALL APP VIA FLATPAK METHOD:

Enter the app store
Install Faugus Launcher
(Flatpaks are not enabled in Ubuntu btw)

Enter Flatseal
Find Faugus Launcher
Make sure GPU perms are enabled (If flatpaks still don't use your GPU, make sure Freedesktop Platform app has the Nvidia addon.
Or Nvidia driver are enrolled mok for Secure Boot in the fedora app store)

----

:SETTING UP FAUGUS:

Enter Faugus Launcher
[Settings]
Enable GameMode
Enable Prevent Sleep (If you’re using a controller,
and the game registers it but still dims the screen after awhile, this fixes it)

----

–HOW TO UNINSTALL INSTALLED DIRECTX–

(Btw, VCREDIST installers have an uninstall button but DIRECTX
or installed via Winetricks don’t have it)
Right click your created game user
Select Path
Select drive_c/windows/system32
Run Uninstaller EXE or Appwiz CPL

----

:EXTRAS:

–IF YOUR APP/GAME HAS VISUAL BUGS OR WON’T RUN–

Open your created user
[Tools / WineCFG / Graphics]

Enable Virtual Desktop
Type your display resolution
(Just use the Windows key to leave Wine Desktop)

----

—IF YOUR CPU/GPU DOESN’T SUPPORT VULCAN–

[Open created user / Tools]
“PROTON_USE_WINED3D=1“ in Launcher Arguments

----

–HOW TO SEARCH AND SELECT MULTIPLE ERROR LOGS–
(If you’re having other problems with an app in Faugus)

[Settings]
Enable Logging (After opening your game, it’ll generate the logs)

[Right click on the user / Logs]
Open file Location
Enter Terminal
(Text editors can't select multiple searched lines at the same time, so we’re gonna use a search tool)
“grep” Run grep command app
“-i”
To ignore lowercase

"”warn”” Put the thing you’re searching for in quotes. (Important errors are labelled warn)
Drag the proton logs text file into the Terminal
(Also, It has to be in quotes to not be mistaken as a command.
But most desktop environments already put the quotes)
(Now you can look and select at all the errors your app has so you know what to fix)

----

:EXTRAS:

–HOW TO FIX LOW VM MAX MAP COUNT ERROR IN LOGS–

Enter Terminal

“sudo YOURTEXTEDITOR” Run your editor as Super User (Find your text editor’s package name by either using the TAB autocomplete
. Or opening the text editor and check its name in the System Monitor app)
“/etc/sysctl.d/99-anythingidk.conf” Makes/edit the config file in that folder
“vm.max_map_count=2147483642“ Type it in the text editor
Save
Reboot
“cat /proc/sys/vm/max_map_count” You can check what the map count file says

----

–IF YOU HAVE STEAM GAMES ISSUES–

github.com/Faugus/faugus-launcher (Only said in Github idk why)

Copy and paste all override perms commands
Or do it via Flatseal

Find Faugus Launcher

Add ~/.var/app/com.valvesoftware.Steam/ perms in Other Files
Add org.freedesktop.Flatpak perms in Talks
Then do the things it said to your flatpak Steam too
