[First Timer] Ubuntu 24.04.1 - Mouse cursor laggy while Battle.net is opening + visual issues in and out of WoW

06. November 2024 - 20:40

Hey all. I've recently removed my windows partition from dual-boot and this is my second attempt at playing World of Warcraft on Ubuntu with Lutris.

(I uploaded the video to google drive)

https://drive.google.com/file/d/1UlhhdRLp31JFQml9YtxC0EIN6QJkoH9I/view?usp=sharing

As you can see from my footage above, I'm experiencing a lot of issues with cursor lag everytime I open BattleNet and WoW itself. I've experienced the same issues during the installation process, when the little wine window popped up.

As shown in the video, my BattleNet windows also gets dark when I move it around.

And an extra issue, when stream recording with OBS (as in the footage) or screensharing on Discord, my game and sometimes cursor gets really laggy. Yet the fps doesn't seem to be changing, it's like instead of a smooth camera movement, I get a snappier version, not sure how to explain it but I think you can see it on the video (I recorded it with OBS after all).

What I've done so far:
- followed the Lutris github Battlenet install tips
- followed the Lutris github WoW install tips
- reinstalled Lutris with flatpak (I had installed it from the .deb before, same issues)

If anyone could please help me sort this out, I really do not want to have windows only for playing the >1< game. Thank you all.

Lutris version: 0.5.17 from flatpak
Wine version on the Lutris runner settings is the default: wine-ge-8-26-x86_64

All Steam games limited to 1 or 4 cpu cores

06. November 2024 - 20:26

have been having a strange issue recently where my steam games will all launch with their CPU affinity set to a random selection and number of 1-4 cores.

I previously fixed it by completely uninstalling and reinstalling steam but it has recently come back again.

I think I have narrowed it down to the "reaper" process here "/home/user/.local/share/Steam/ubuntu12_32/reaper" which always launches with its affinity set to specific cores (usually either 1 or 4).

I have never manually set the affinity of this process aside from allowing it to run on all cores when i noticed it was set to a limited set. Anyone know how to fix this?

Cannot get non-steam games to work with steam input

06. November 2024 - 20:26

Like the title says, I cannot get steam input to work with games from Heroic, even when I add them to steam. I have a steam deck and steam input works flawlessly with non-steam games on it, but I have absolutely no idea why I can't get it work on my gaming PC! Anyone has a solution? Any help would be appreciated.

Using Fedora 41 with Gnome btw.

Xbox Cloud Gaming keeps crashing

06. November 2024 - 20:26

I really wanted to play Halo 5, so I got Game Pass Ultimate with Xbox Cloud Gaming so play it on Linux (otherwise it's not available). When starting the game (or any other game), it loads fine, shows the Xbox spalsh screen, then turns to black and then quits back to the overview in the browser. I'm using ungoogled Chromium on Arch, all up to date. Any ideas what may cause this?

DXVK install?

06. November 2024 - 20:20

Can anyone please tell me how to install DXVK? I installed it through Winetricks, now I'm not sure what to do. I'm trying to play Red Dead Redemption but it keeps giving me this "A hardware graphics adapter with support for D3D_FEATURE_LEVEL_11_0 is required" error. I stumbled upon DXVK and heard that's great for Linux gaming, but just installing it through Winetricks doesn't seem to work. Am I missing something?

Completely new to Linux, wanna play Skyrim Special Edition

06. November 2024 - 20:16

Hey everyone! This is my first experience with Linux. I've been able to play Skyrim Special Edition to a serviceable extent but I would like to tweak a few things. First and foremost: It crashes really often. I know, I know, it's Skyrim, but I mean more than usual. (something like half of my attempts to play it end after a few minutes with a crash, but sometimes I can play for hours just fine) Also, I would like to try modding it, but I have no experience in that field. (I get frustrated and discouraged with technology pretty easily and haven't even tried modding on Windows) Mostly I would want performance/bugfix mods, particularly so that I can run it a resolution lower than 720p for higher frame rate. Maybe I'll get more adventurous with mods later on, idk. Attached are my system specs.

Old Yu-Gi-Oh! Game Crashes after a specific game mechanic trigger

06. November 2024 - 20:02

Hi, I've recently been playing around with Yu-Gi-Oh! Power of Chaos: Yugi the Destiny (BestOfOldGames).
It's a 2003 video game released for Windows, primarily XP.

What happens is, when the game's supposed to adjust monsters' ATK/DEF, the game crashes.
I've done some digging and this person seems to be having the same problem.

This is a Linux specific thing, I've ran the game within a Windows 10 VM and it worked completely fine - modified monster has their ATK/DEF displayed in blue or red, depending on the adjustment.

On Linux, the animation of a modifier card would trigger, up until the point where it's supposed to adjust the monster's attack or defense, then crash.
All Wine / terminal would output is: wine: Unhandled page fault on read access to 0000013F at address 0040A580 (thread 00dc), starting debugger...

As for what I've tried:
32bit Wine prefix, 64bit Wine prefix, different compatibility modes (Win XP - Win 10)
Different DX9 versions
Different runners: Proton-GE, Sys-Wine, Soda, 2 or 3 different Lutris ones, Caffe, Vaniglia
Different renderer settings within Bottles
Enabling DXVK/VKD3D
Running it through Lutris and one of it's runners
Running it through Steam

Since the VM doesn't use my GPU, I tried disabling it through Bottles by disabling discrete GPU, as well as using Wine flags (LIBGL_ALWAYS_SOFTWARE=1 WINEUSEGL=1 WINEDEBUG=-all) in both the launch options for that game and the Bottles itself and the environment variables within that Bottle - didn't help.

I'm running out of ideas, anyone know what might be happening?

Having a weird issue with intermittent black screen.

06. November 2024 - 19:21

After recently purchasing an AMD GPU I installed Linux (which is expressly the reason I bought the GPU) and I'm now having a very frustrating problem.

When I set the resolution to 4k 120hz and do anything remotely graphical in the UI. The screen turns black for a sec almost as if the resolution or something is changing. And then comes back. It happens randomly, but gets worse in more widespread graphical movements on the screen. Strangely it doesn't affect games once launched. Just the UI of steam gaming mode in particular. Although it does happen to a lesser extent on the kde desktop as well.

Lowering resolution or frame rate resolves the problem.

But it kind of sucks playing in 1440p on my 4k display.

GPU is a 7800xt

Need help with Vinegar (again)

06. November 2024 - 19:20

I've already made a post regarding this topic on this sub before, but now that i know whats the problem i still havent found an actual solution to this. I use Ubuntu v22.04, and when i try to do any installation with Vinegar, it sends at the end of it this error code:

Vinegar experienced an error: failed to setup roblox: install version-7cc6d2bdac2f4837: setup: unhandled package: content-platform-dictionaries.zip

I have no idea whats the actual issue and it keeps giving me this error message whether i reinstall it (i tried installing both from flatpak and other sources). Does anyone have the same problem, or even a solution? I couldnt find anything related on the internet, probably this github issue is the closest, and they fixed their problem by configuring it to older version, which i do not know how to do either.

Anybody else having controller issues since last Steam updates?

06. November 2024 - 18:34

After Steam receiving a couple Steam Linux Runtime updates, I notice that none of my native Linux games work with a controller anymore. Disabling/enabling Steam Input doesn't seem to affect the issue. Other applications and Steam itself seem to receive controller input, but native games launched from Steam don't receive any.

Titanfall 2 black screen, 50% CPU usage after respawn logo

06. November 2024 - 16:53

I'm having a bit of trouble running titanfall 2 on arch.
When opening the game the splash screens work as normal, the respawn entertainment logo and loading icon appear and then the screen goes black, the CPU pins to 50% usage and nothing happens.

So far i've tried:

  • for var in $(printenv | cut -d= -f1); do export $var=$(echo ${!var} | rev | cut -c1-1000 | rev); done ; OPENSSL_ia32cap=~0x20000000
  • -window -noborder -novid launch options
  • Running the game via the EA app in bottles with various runners
  • Installing and running the game in Lutris using the provided titanfall 2 script
  • Purchasing and running the game via steam (it's on a deep sale atm)
  • following the installation instructions for northstar mods
  • Adding the EA app as a non-steam game, installing and then moving the prefix to the titanfall 2 installation
  • various versions of proton including 6.3-8, 7.0-6, 9.0-3, Experimental, GE9-18 and Northstar proton

I'm not sure what else i may be missing, the game has near flawless recent reviews of protondb and i can't find any accounts of this issue for other people. My hardware is more than capable (4070 on 565 drivers, i5 6600k, 32gb ram, ssd) and i have no issue running other demanding games.

Has anyone else encountered similar?

Looking for hardware advice for a new build.

06. November 2024 - 15:25

I'm currently running a 6700k and RTX2080ti with my 3440x1440@180hz monitor. I want to build a new SFF pc entirely and my budget is between 150,000php to 200,000php (~2,500 to 3,400 USD). I run Arch Linux with Hyprland/Wayland for my desktop setup.

I'm looking at the 7900XTX and the 4080 Super - I'm aware AMD GPU's are supposedly better for Linux but I haven't had any issues with my Nvidia cards so far (went from GTX1080 to my current RTX2080ti) and considering the cost for both cards are the same here, I feel like the 4080S is the better buy considering the parity rasterized performance plus better upscaling tech etc. I do want to support AMD due to Nvidia's anti-consumer practices but realistically I feel like I should buy the better product for my budget.

Are there really tangible benefits to going for an AMD GPU in Linux? Is there feature parity for their driver suite/utilities in Linux vs Windows? From what I can see online, there isn't a tuning utility for linux on AMD cards, same as Nvidia. I really need a good reason to go for the 7900XTX over the 4080S based on what I've seen with my research.

Similarly, I'm looking at an AMD CPU - the 7600 non X. The 7700 (and X) isn't that much more expensive though, will there be a tangible difference in gaming? I also use my machine for software development, so compiling code is also a consideration. I don't mind spending a little more on my CPU as I haven't had a decent CPU for a long time and I'm sick of my 1% lows and stuttering.

Finally, this would be my first time buying an m.2 drive over SATA, is it worth going for a gen 5 drive over gen 4? Most of my mass storage goes into my home server, the only files I really save locally are when I fork my repos temporarily or video games. My concern comes from reports I've seen of modern games that were ported from the PS5 needing much faster storage than what's typically in a PC. I'm assuming it's not worth it but I'd be interested to hear what others have to say.

Thanks!
