Do GOG solo games work well on Linux?

20. April 2024 - 20:27

I heard that it was more complicated to run GOG games (even with the offline installer). Is that true?

Display Stream Compression with Nouveau kernel driver and GSP

20. April 2024 - 20:12

So just a precaution I wanted to inform people of that's currently unsupported if you're using the nouveau open-source kernel driver, the one that usually comes pre-installed. If you enable the GSP firmware with the nouveau.config=NvGspRm=1 kernel parameter, you will get improved performance, however this breaks Display Stream Compression, which meaning that if for example you have a DisplayPort 1.4 cable running to a 1440p 240Hz monitor, you won't be able to output 240Hz, only 144Hz. Just thought I should inform anyone who might not know that that's an issue.

Edit: this was reported about a month ago on the nouveau drm gitlab page, but nothing has been done about it so far

New user, question about "Gold" rated tweaks

20. April 2024 - 19:18

I'm referring to the protondb ratings that say "gold" level games take a few tweaks.

As a lifelong Windows user what tweaks would this usually be? Is there a video or resource that would point my troubleshooting in the right direction if I do need to tweak something?

I just played a Gold rated game and everything worked right out of the box, 0 problems. Running the latest Mint. AMD CPU Nvidia GPU

The Debian Discord Server is back!

20. April 2024 - 18:44

Hi everyone,

Today I'm here to announce the return of the Debian Discord Server!

You can find us at https://discord.gg/debian

Now you may be wondering "Wasn't there already a Debian Discord Server? Why are you posting this again?" Well the previous server was sadly deleted as the previous owner was going through personal issues. We have now revived the server under new management so that people can still come together under this platform to discuss all things Debian and Linux! This includes gaming for Debian Linux!

As before, we strive to build a healthy community to discuss Debian and Linux. We've chosen this platform as it's accessible to those who are very new to the world of FOSS and Linux. This gives us a better reach to help foster new users so that they can learn and grow. We thank everyone who is interested in growing the community and appreciate any constructive feedback.

Thank you, from all of us at the Debian Discord Staff!

Protonhax vs proton

20. April 2024 - 18:16

I am gaming on the SteamDeck and trying to understand how Protonhax (that can be used to get CE to run alongside a game) differs from normal Proton.

Finally got Elden Ring working using flatpak Steam

20. April 2024 - 18:11

I've been trying for almost a year on and off to get Elden ring to work. I have Kubuntu 22.04, steam from the .deb and an AMD GPU.

I tried everything I could think of before figuring out that the problem was that Elden Ring wants a 32-bit version of Mesa. The one in my version of Kubuntu was too old and I was unable to cross-compile a 32-bit version. The 64-bit version I compiled allowed me to play everything else without problems.

Turns out flatpak Steam uses a flatpak Mesa which has a fairly current 32-bit version. It just works. Just had to make sure to unset env variables such as VK_ICD_FILENAMES.

Figured that I should post this since other people seemed to also have problems running it.

Using dGPU instead of iGPU on external monitor setup?

20. April 2024 - 17:43

So I've got Helldivers 2 and running it without the external monitor connected with PRIME offload actually runs the game on my Nvidia RTX 3050 in laptop meanwhile while connecting the external display game is not able to run with PRIME offload, it always runs on AMD iGPU. Any help? My distro is Fedora 39 with GNOME On Wayland. Latest Nvidia closed-source drivers

KDE or GNOME for linux gaming

20. April 2024 - 17:21

Now that immersed supports Wayland I've been meaning to swap to Linux again, but I'm split between the DEs listed in the title. For reference I use immerse quite a bit. But there's an issue in KDE that makes using it with immersed troublesome, the virtual display feature is hard-coded to 1080p, even with the dbus script in their discord, and last I remember the virtual displays aren't hardware accelerated when I tried it with weylus on Garuda Linux. So I'm tempted to go to Gnome. Any other downsides, or maybe advantages, between the two?

Issue with Fallout NV INI file in Linux

20. April 2024 - 16:52

Launcher says that game is not installed.

after i added "HKLM,SOFTWARE\Wow6432node\Bethesda Softworks\FalloutNV,"Installed Path",,"/home/cvrsed/.steam/debian-installation/steamapps/common/Fallout New Vegas enplczru"" to wine.inf. "install" button changed to "play" but it shows error "unable to locate the INI file. please reinstall fallout".

also tried to add "[Software\\Wow6432Node\\Bethesda Softworks\\FalloutNV] 1627669000

time=1d7856f0ad32d72

"Installed Path"="/home/cvrsed/.steam/debian-installation/steamapps/common/Fallout New Vegas enplczru"" into /home/cvrsed/.steam/debian-installation/steamapps/compatdata/1887720/pfx/system.reg nut it didnt affected anything

checking files in steam shows that 1 file is corrupted and will be reinstalled

im sure that issue is in path somewhere.

im using linux mint 21.7, official Fallout: New Vegas PCR on steam, Proton 7.0, and nvdida videocard.

will be grateful for help.

New PC performs worse than previous PC, despite having better specs (Only on Wayland)

20. April 2024 - 16:50

Hi all. After running windows for a bit on my new PC build for gaming tests, I decided to return to Arch. Before building my new PC, I daily drove Arch for about 6 months with Plasma under Wayland for gaming, and overall had slightly better performance in games than I did with Windows 11. This has not been the case for my new computer, despite being an all-AMD build like my last system. When entering games, I'm noticing worse overall framerates, and really bad choppiness overall that seems to fluctuate (noticeable mostly in mouse cursor movements.) Out of curiosity, I booted up plasma with X11, and it doesn't seem to be an issue at all there. I may just end up sticking to X11 to resolve this issue for now, but I'm wondering if there's something I'm completely overlooking here?

Hardware:

cpu: AMD Ryzen 7 7800X3D

gpu: AMD Radeon RX 7800 XT

ram: 32GB DDR5 5600MHz

mb: ASRock B650M

All software is up to date, including mesa, vulkan-radeon, and the 32 bit versions of each.

I want to install linux but I don't know which distribution would work best for me.

20. April 2024 - 15:48

Hello!!,

I'm new to linux (I have no idea), but I would like to install it on my laptop and I want to have a version that is compatible for both gaming and programming, I usually play a little LoL, some steam stuff like Baldurs gate 3, Darkest Dungeon, FM23, etc ... and then I'm learning on my own to program.

So I would like to have a version that has some compatibility ocn games I can understand that some fail me and above all to program do not have any problem.

Thank you all very much for reading me and thanks in advance.

Valve

20. April 2024 - 11:47

Can we all agree, that valve is the reason why linux is useable in gaming? Without proton, 90% of games in steam would be unplayable. Or imagine if steam wasn't in linux at all? (almost) No one would switch to linux if that would be the case.

Don't get me wrong. I don't think valve is the best company or anything. It has faults, but we cant deny their pushes to make linux mainstream.

Eiyuden Chronicle: Hundred Heroes Linux Proton

20. April 2024 - 10:46

Double posting from the Eiyuden sub but I guess id try my luck here.

In anticipation of hundred heroes launching soon. I wanted to ask the community if anyone has been playing under linux/proton and has found a way to import the save game from Rising into Hundred Heroes? (Or any other game that supports save importing from a different game.)

Im not sure if simply moving the saved game from the Rising prefix into the Hundred Heroes prefix is enough.

Does anyone have any information or experience with this?

Thank you!
