Going from a Nvidia RTX 4080 to AMD Radeon 9070XT

22. März 2025 - 23:19

I currently have a rtx 4080 and whole things are fine, I've been hearing that the AMD side of the fence is better for Linux gaming. The other day I caught some word that Nvidia takes a 20% hit on DX12 based games due to a long standing driver issue. This has me curious about alternatives.

A friend who is on Windows wants to upgrade and is willing to buy my 4080 for the cost of an AMD 9070 XT that I'd replace it with.

Since Linux has better support for AMD overall, am I crazy here? I imagine I'd get more for the Nvidia card elsewhere but I'm less interested in that and more looking at the quick "cost free" transition to AMD this could allow for.

Turtle beach stealth ultra controller compatibility

22. März 2025 - 22:16

Hi,
I recently switched to Cachy OS and so far I am pleasantly surprised with how my peripherals works, however, today I decided to play a game with the use of a gamepad, I have Turtle Beach Stealth Ultra, this controller has three modes, it can mimic xbox controller wirelessly via usb dongle, via usb cable connection and third mode when it can be connected as a generic controller via bluetooth, I tried to use it with steam but unfortunately none of the connections seems to be working. I tried to look for some solutions online, but so far I could not find a thing. I am wondering if any of redditors uses this controller under linux, or have any suggestions what I can try to make it work?

Many thanks.

FPS drop after reinstalling Linux mint

22. März 2025 - 22:02

Recently I had to reinstall Linux mint due to a hard drive corruption. I have been trying to make my own game for a while now in Godot, I saved it to an external seagate expansion. For some reason, after reinstalling linux mint, the game is incredibly jittery, so jittery it makes certain parts unplayable, some games in my steam library are also notably slower. I've been told that the problem is that my Graphics card is bad, but what I don't understand is why is it that it used to run so smoothly, Why is it that now the graphics card runs so slowly. Everything else such as my browser runs smoothly though.

Here are the system specs:

LACT thermal controls 7900xt

22. März 2025 - 21:51

Iv had everything working just fine other than noticing that fan speeds don't line up with what is set. Using the default curve im going up to 80%+ fan speed at around 50c gpu temp and it gets loud. Iv manually set the curve to not go over 50% which seems fine for cooling but it still reads to be around 60% on the LACT historical graphs. Is this a, rdna3 bug still needing worked out?

GOG Batman Arkham City Issues

22. März 2025 - 21:47

GOAL: Play Arkham City in fullscreen with a wired PS4 controller.

PROBLEM: I use Heroic to launch Arkham City. When I launch using Wine Default, the settings launcher does not launch, Heroic goes straight to the game, my PS4 controller works but the game is in windowed mode and I cannot adjust settings. When I launch using Proton, the settings program launches first (as it should), and I can adjust the settings, but then my PS4 controller is not recognized.

If I launch the settings-launcher in a terminal I get this error:

0024:err:mscoree:CLRRuntimeInfo_GetRuntimeHost Wine Mono is not installed

So I installed Wine Mono using "apt install mono-complete". Reboot, same error. Removed using "apt remove mono-complete". I tried "apt install dotnet8", because I heard dotnet8 replaced mono, but I still get the same error.

I am using Mint 22.1 and wine 9.0.

Does anyone know how I can get Wine to launch the settings launcher?

Should i switch to linux?

22. März 2025 - 21:01

I'm considering switching because of privacy concerns and the crappy bloatware windows has, but i've never used linux. I've also heard it can be hard to run some games that have a strict anticheat, and i play a couple of those. I consider myself fairly competent in computers, so just worried about compatibility. Also would like some distro recommendations.

How do driver updates work?

22. März 2025 - 20:32

On Windows PC there usually is a new driver release for your GPU for big games like AC Shadows. Which I got for my AMD card under windows. I tried playing Shadows under Linux but the performance is way worse and choppy on my 7900XT compared to when under windows. But since there is no Adrenaline or Linux Drivers how would I get the update for my distro? Mint rn with proton GE and Kisak Mesa drivers.

Steam Crashing after GNOME 48/Nvidia Driver update

22. März 2025 - 20:11

EDIT: RESOLVED

Needed to update the FlatPak NVIDIA drivers. I ran flatpak update like twice earlier but no update did it again just a min ago and everything works again

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Hey all,
I was excited to try out GNOME 48 with it's new HDR feature for gaming but after upgrading my system Steam will open then close immediately after.

I noticed during the upgrade that my NVIDIA drivers also upgraded too which "could" be the issue?
I have these errors I gathered from journalctl.

Gaming on Linux: Why the controversy?

22. März 2025 - 19:30

Hello All!

I recently joined the Linux community as a grew tired of windows and I realized that the games I actually enjoyed playing were playable on Linux. Anyways one thing that I have been struggling with a lot is dealing with friend/people who make fun of the fact that I run Linux and that games that they play/want me to play do not run on Linux.

My question I guess would be do you deal with something similar/ have you in the past? Why do you enjoy gaming on Linux as a main operating system?

Thank you in advance for your replies!

Custom resolutions in Wayland

22. März 2025 - 18:50

I use a CRT Monitor and a script to use xrandr to set my custom resolution at login. I would like to switch to gnome or KDE Plasma, but I haven't been able to figure out setting a custom resolution in Wayland.

Has any one had much luck getting custom resolutions to work in Wayland? Has anyone got custom resolutions to work using boot parameters? I haven't. Should I stick to X11?

New to Linux, issue's with Death Stranding.

22. März 2025 - 18:27

Hey there, I recently moved to Linux and a relative beginner with it. Decided to install Mint, as it seemed a nice distro to start with.

My main problem is I have began installing some of my games again and Death Stranding Director's Cut is the only game out of the 6 I have installed that has been giving me some issues. I had a look on ProtonDB and it was Gold rated which sounded great and a number of the comments said it worked out of the box.

When I launch it I will get this error. I have tried changing Proton versions, even used ProtonUp-QT to install Proton GE and it will be the same regardless. But when this error comes up and the game closes. The game will then load up fine after a few attempts without changing anything.

All I know is it's something to do with vulkan, but not sure what to do about it. Other than the annoyance of having to try a few times before it will successfully load in, I can live with it. Just trying to understand what the error is, thanks for any insight.

OS: Linux Mint 22.1

KERNEL: 6.8.0-55-generic

CPU: Intel Core i7-8086K @ 4.00GHz

GPU: NVIDIA GeForce RTX 3070

DRIVER: NVIDIA 550.120

Can't switch to dGPU in Lutris

22. März 2025 - 17:37

Hello,

I'm currently facing a problem where I cannot play a game using my Dedicated GPU, it launches with my integrated GPU. I've installed the wine dependencies and drivers. When I go to the global settings and try to change the default GPU, it's grayed out. (as provided in the screenshot)

Note that I am using a laptop with two GPUs, one dGPU which is NVIDIA GTX 1650, and another iGPU radeon graphics series

If you need any additional information, just let me know.

Additional Information:
Desktop: Hyprland
Lutris is installed a regular system package, not using Flatpak.

(I use Arch, BTW)

EDIT: Added more additional information
