If you had to pick one distro for the rest of your life, what would it be?

12. März 2026 - 17:34

Imagine you have to choose one Linux distro to use for the rest of your life. The catch is that you can never perform a clean installation from an ISO again. If the project evolves, you update or rebase, but if development ceases, you’re simply stuck with that final state forever. This single OS must run on every PC you own, from your main gaming rig and HTPC to your Steam Deck (excluding only mobile and smart ecosystems like Android or WebOS). No more distro-hopping; just one environment to maintain until the end.

I suspect my choice would be a community-maintained project with a long track record like Debian or Arch, but I genuinely have many doubts about which one would actually be the safest bet for the long haul. I know this is the ultimate r/DistroHopping question, but I’m posting it here because I’m specifically interested in the perspective of the gaming community regarding long-term reliability and hardware support. I'm very curious to see your thoughts.

Steam suddenly stopped being able to run

12. März 2026 - 15:05

Steam was running entirely fine yesterday, until it crashed while i was play sts 2. My computer froze and i had to shut her down, and after that steam has been refusing to run, only showing this message. Im on Ubuntu 24.04.3. I've had steam for years on this laptop and it is only now that it stopped working. I tried googling for similar issues, but they all seemed to be with recent installations of Steam, not it suddenly ceasing to work, and none of them seemed to have these specific libraries missing

Working soundboard program for source games?

12. März 2026 - 13:49

Im looking for a soundboard that works with Team Fortress 2.

I tried Soundux and some tinkering with Helvum but ultimately ran into the issue that, try as I might, my microphone was broadcasting ALL audio, not just the one from the Soundux app. Soundux allows you to select an application through which to send sound but it can only detect Team Fortress 2 when I am holding down the push-to-talk button ingame. Also Soundux is abandoned judging by the GitHub page...

Can anyone recommend a good soundboard app?

My honest thoughts about current state of "best distros"

12. März 2026 - 12:44

Hi all, after seeing the recent 2nd round of LTT Linux challenge and the discourse around it, I decided to finally dump my thoughts into words as one short blog post around current state of Linux Desktop from a user pov, why distributions don't matter that much, and where I think people (the users!) should demand better to have a better ecosystem for the end users.

Link to said blog is here: https://wsap.dev/posts/best-linux-distro

Everything I wrote about there are either first-hand experience, or seen/heard people experience over the years. I may have missed some stuff, or have mistakes on some parts. Please let me know your thoughts in the comments!

All games run horribly after messing with lutris/dxvk, with some games not opening at all.

12. März 2026 - 12:36

Hi, hoping to get some advice and that someone else has had some problem like this and can offer a solution.

System Specs: Ubuntu 24.04. on a system76 laptop with an AMD Ryzeb 7 7735U with Radeon Graphics × 16

The problem: Trying to play most games results in the game running horribly slow and my CPU usage jumping to ~100%. This doesn't seem to be a temporary problem (like if the shader's were being cached), I've left games running for 30+ minutes with the problem unresolved. Some games (this has specifically only happened with Deadlock and TF2) won't open at all. Games without any 3d graphics (specifically I've noticed this with RPGMaker games) still seem to run fine. This occurs for both steam games and at least 1 linux native game (factorio).

Background: I've been gaming with Linux for about 2 years and have never had an issue like this before. For the past two days trying to run practically any game results in my CPU throttling to max and the game running extremely slowly. This all occurred after I was trying to get an RPGMaker game to work, and in the process of getting it to work I ended up manually adding dxvk to wine and installing Lutris to get it to work. I'm not actually sure if that's the root cause of this, but I can't think of anything that has changed to cause this issue since I didn't have any system updates or other changes since the last time my system worked. I ended up completely uninstalling+reinstalling wine and completely uninstalling lutris which didn't help. I had originally thought that the problem was confined to steam/proton and completely uninstalled and reinstalled steam (and this is including deleting all files in .steam/ and .local/share/Steam and reinstalling games), which didn't fix the issue, and after testing with factorio I found that the problem wasn't unique to steam anyways. In terms of caching shaders the steam console output seems to suggest that that's happening (I'll post a screenshot in the comments), but even after leaving games open for 30+ minutes it remains laggy and the CPU remains at ~100%. So, I suspect I've done something stupid and somehow disabled dxvk or something, but I can't find anything to fix this.

Attempts to Fix: Completely uninstall/reinstall wine and steam. Updated mesa and also tried switching to the kisak/turtle release. Completely uninstalled lutris and also any packages installed with lutris. For steam games I've tried launching with several different proton versions (experiment/v10/v9) (I've also tried a handful of settings when using proton but I don't recall everything I tried).

Has anyone managed to get ray tracing working under Quake III RTX?

12. März 2026 - 10:58

I've downloaded the mod from here:

https://www.moddb.com/mods/quake-3-arena-rtx-remix-mod

I added the game to Steam as a non Steam game, enabled Proton Experimental, added the pak0.pk3 to pak8.pk3 files into the baseq3 folder, the game launches and runs perfectly but there's no RTX effects - it's just normal textures.

Has anyone managed to get this working under Linux with RTX effects? Video below:

Nvidia + dx12

12. März 2026 - 09:22

Hey i used to use arch linux around 6 month ago, i have a laptop with igpu + rtx gpu using Nvidia optimus, i ran dx11 or vulkan games just fine, but i had a lot of performance issues with dx12 games, and yes i did setup optimus so that im using the rtx card while gaming, and i tried using proton / wine both gave same results, anyone have an idea why Nvidia gpus suck with dx12 games on linux? And is there a fix?

Linux gaming has come a long way

12. März 2026 - 08:09

I used Linux on and off since 2014, and changed to primarily using Linux around 2019. I wishi could get rid of windows, but games never worked well.

I remember ripping my hair out trying to get games to work on Pop OS. It was possible but too tedious. Performance issues, updates borking everything. Gave up, and switching to dual booting. Changed to arch a bit later.

But dual booting is frustrating. Needing to close everything and reboot to play games, having different settings and UIs sucks.

Gave it a try again last week, and holy fuck. It just works, especially with steam. EA and Epic were a bit finnicky but still, it works. Better performance than native Windows. Never going back.

Some anticheats don't work, but fuck those games. I'll play the ones which do, and it's not like there's a shortage of games that work perfectly.

Thanks, lord Gaben
