Is there a way to create a virtual monitor on gnome Wayland, so I don't need a display dummy to stream my desktop when the monitor is turned off?

Reddit Linux_Gaming - 05. März 2024 - 15:47

Most display dummy only support 60hz at a resolution of 1080p. I would like to create a virtual monitor and clone the specs of my physical monitor, for example 2560x1440 at 240hz. I would like to stream games with the program sunshine.

Can I test Linux Gaming and my VRR on a live Usb?

Reddit Linux_Gaming - 05. März 2024 - 14:58

I want to see if Linux will properly support my vrr monitor with all my games on it. Apparently, vrr support can defer on an application bases. Wouldn't it be possible to set up a live USB with a external SSD for my games?

still looking for a better distro, any suggestions?

Reddit Linux_Gaming - 05. März 2024 - 14:03

last year i made a post here because i wanted to switch to linux for daily use (mainly watching youtube and gaming). i got a lot of usefull feedback and im very thankfull for that.

ever since that post, i have been learning Arch linux and got it working on a virtual machine.

yesterday i finally installed it and tested it.

i now have come to the conclusion that Arch based distros are not for me.

dont get me wrong, Arch is amazing but it gives me way to much freedom and it just isnt it for me. maybe in the far future when i actually know more about linux, but it was fun while it lasted.

luckely because of this, i have been able to make a sort of checklist of what i want from a distro:

  • Rolling Release, im a gamer and although i get the appeal behind stable releases / longterm support (Ubuntu, Debian, Mint and more) its not for me.

  • Beginner friendly, the desktops are not really the issue, i allready found Kde Plasma to be my go to (and with Plasma 6 its gonna be even better).

  • Large dev team, although Nobara sounds great i just prefer a larger dev team behind a distro.

  • Bios / Legacy boot support, i have both a gaming laptop and a pc. my pc uses Legacy boot (old school Bios) while my laptop has Uefi for the bios mode.

  • good / decent package manager, i only know 5 package managers (Zypper, Pacman, Snaps, Flatpack, Apt) but i allready know Zypper and Snaps are far from good. snaps is no secret why its bad, and the reason for why Zypper is bad thats mainly because of the constant "i want fresh mirrors" it demands and the incredibly slow updates. for more info on why Zypper is bad, check this video.

as a last note, i am sorry but 1 distro is allready not gonna be used by me. wich one? OpenSUSE Tumbleweed.

why? because of Zypper and the issues that has, and the political bias the Suse devs have. i am not interested in debating politics, but i do have to say it is never a good idea to make your distro or os political.

but what is so political about Suse? they are pretty left leaning, call right leaning people "rotten flesh that needs to be cut out" and ban all users who are right leaning people. for more info, check this video.

a bit of extra info:

  • both my pc and laptop use an Nvidia gpu and an Amd cpu

  • if problems occur i always try to fix it on my own and then go to other people for help

  • i do want to install apps via either Flatpack or the terminal, preferably the terminal but both are fine

thanks in advance for the help

Building a Retro Linux Gaming Computer Part 39: Beyond Heretic

Gaming on Linux - 05. März 2024 - 12:05
I stated before that neither of the contemporary HeXen ports, Linux Hexen and its fork HHexen, supported MIDI music playback through the /dev/sequencer device, but hiding on the venerable SunSITE network I found the only online trace of another early HeXen source port released in December 1999 by Russian programmer Stanislav Nesterov.

Finally went team red after "wasting" a weekend.

Reddit Linux_Gaming - 05. März 2024 - 11:19

Ah, this is going to be a rant.

This weekend I decided that it was time for a change. I had been using OpenSUSE Tumbleweed for about a year and while things were going perfectly fine Arch was just calling me back. So I decided that it was time to head back "home"...

But I figured I could experiment a bit. I had always used Plasma as my DE. Didn't really matter what distro, just defaulted to Plasma as I liked its ease of customization. When I first went Linux in 2021 I mosty picked it cause it looked like Windows.

But this time Hyprland was really catching my attention. Something about it was very alluring, so I had to give it a try. Since I had a RTX 3080 I was a bit worried over this, but still went through with it. After some back and forth with archinstall and the Hyprland documention I was up and running... and it ran surprisingly okay. Could even play games on it. I was quite ecstatic. So I spent the day really enjoying Hyprland and discovering my new-found love for tiling WMs.

Of course, things had to stop going well at some point. And it came when I started coding. I do a decent amount hobby game dev, and one of my projects is written in Rust using WebGPU and winit. For some reason, no input worked on this project. The window just refused to accept any cursor/keyboard events. So... not being one to give up, I spent an unholy amount of time refactoring, trying different versions, searching Github for issues... and safe to say, nothing worked. Was quite defeated.

That is until Sunday night where I decided that I'm going to install my exact setup on my HTPC, which uses an RX 6600. Everything worked there. No issues whatsoever. Nvidia was the issue... again. It was relieving to finally figure out the root cause of things... but man was I livid.

To make a long story short... It ended with me coming home from work yesterday, tearing out my RTX 3080 in my main machine and replacing it with my RX 6600. The downgrade kind of hurts my soul a bit, but I just don't have it in my to care anymore... I'm so done with minor Nvidia issues.

Now just to wait for a new generation of GPUs.

Apologies for the rant. Had to get it out.

TLDR; Switching to Hyprland made me rage out on my RTX 3080 ending with me replacing it with my RX 6600.
