Needing help with GPU passthrough in VM for multiplayer games/games that don't necessarily work on linux well.

Reddit Linux_Gaming - 30. Oktober 2024 - 21:15

So I'm just having a hard time, to the point that I think I'm missing something real stupid. I get to the point of configuring the vm, for windows 11, and it just "hangs" on "creating domain." I don't really remember what command I used, or what page I found the command on, but one hinted at essentially my 3080ti is not "detaching" so it can passthrough to the VM, or that's how I understood it. Maybe that's a hint that could help someone who knows better. But, at thit point you gotta ask. Here is a list of info for you guys that I'm pretty sure is relevant, I'll be watching reddit like a hawk today so if you need anything else I can likely get it for you within 15 minutes. If someone can help me check this box.. man you'd be a hero.

Arch/CachyOS

Two GPUS: 3080 TI and AMD HD 6540 (old one i picked up at a pawn shop a while back)

AMD CPU, IOMMU is enabled (im pretty sure)

Latest driver, fully updated, default kernel

Bootloader: Systemd mkinitcpio.conf config:

# vim:set ft=sh

# MODULES

# The following modules are loaded before any boot hooks are

# run. Advanced users may wish to specify all system modules

# in this array. For instance:

# MODULES=(usbhid xhci_hcd)

MODULES=(vfio vfio_iommu_type1 vfio_pci)

# BINARIES

# This setting includes any additional binaries a given user may

# wish into the CPIO image. This is run last, so it may be used to

# override the actual binaries included by a given hook

# BINARIES are dependency parsed, so you may safely ignore libraries

BINARIES=()

# FILES

# This setting is similar to BINARIES above, however, files are added

# as-is and are not parsed in any way. This is useful for config files.

FILES=()

# HOOKS

# This is the most important setting in this file. The HOOKS control the

# modules and scripts added to the image, and what happens at boot time.

# Order is important, and it is recommended that you do not change the

# order in which HOOKS are added. Run 'mkinitcpio -H <hook name>' for

# help on a given hook.

# 'base' is _required_ unless you know precisely what you are doing.

# 'udev' is _required_ in order to automatically load modules

# 'filesystems' is _required_ unless you specify your fs modules in MODULES

# Examples:

## This setup specifies all modules in the MODULES setting above.

## No RAID, lvm2, or encrypted root is needed.

# HOOKS=(base)

#

## This setup will autodetect all modules for your system and should

## work as a sane default

# HOOKS=(base udev autodetect modconf block filesystems fsck)

#

## This setup will generate a 'full' image which supports most systems.

## No autodetection is done.

# HOOKS=(base udev modconf block filesystems fsck)

#

## This setup assembles a mdadm array with an encrypted root file system.

## Note: See 'mkinitcpio -H mdadm_udev' for more information on RAID devices.

# HOOKS=(base udev modconf keyboard keymap consolefont block mdadm_udev encrypt filesystems fsck)

#

## This setup loads an lvm2 volume group.

# HOOKS=(base udev modconf block lvm2 filesystems fsck)

#

## This will create a systemd based initramfs which loads an encrypted root filesystem.

# HOOKS=(base systemd autodetect modconf kms keyboard sd-vconsole sd-encrypt block filesystems fsck)

#

## NOTE: If you have /usr on a separate partition, you MUST include the

# usr and fsck hooks.

HOOKS=(modconf)

# COMPRESSION

# Use this to compress the initramfs image. By default, zstd compression

# is used for Linux ≥ 5.9 and gzip compression is used for Linux < 5.9.

# Use 'cat' to create an uncompressed image.

#COMPRESSION="zstd"

#COMPRESSION="gzip"

#COMPRESSION="bzip2"

#COMPRESSION="lzma"

#COMPRESSION="xz"

#COMPRESSION="lzop"

#COMPRESSION="lz4"

# COMPRESSION_OPTIONS

# Additional options for the compressor

#COMPRESSION_OPTIONS=()

# MODULES_DECOMPRESS

# Decompress loadable kernel modules and their firmware during initramfs

# creation. Switch (yes/no).

# Enable to allow further decreasing image size when using high compression

# (e.g. xz -9e or zstd --long --ultra -22) at the expense of increased RAM usage

# at early boot.

# Note that any compressed files will be placed in the uncompressed early CPIO

# to avoid double compression.

#MODULES_DECOMPRESS="no"

Modprob.d/vfio.conf:

If i am missing something simple and stupid, I'm sure having another strangers eyes on it will be the trick. any help is appreciated, or if theres a guide you found that you followed I'd greatly appreciate it. This has really gotten under my skin and I don't know what to do or what question to even ask really.

Can't get HedgeModManager working with Sonic Frontiers in Fedora 41

Reddit Linux_Gaming - 30. Oktober 2024 - 20:56

Whenever the mod loader is installed, Sonic Frontiers won't launch. I've tried following the instructions on the wiki) the best I can. There's a trouble shooting step to `Link Here` but I don't know if that's in bottles or my file manager or what.

Are games more compatible with linux nowadays?

Reddit Linux_Gaming - 30. Oktober 2024 - 20:50

Sorry for being an idiot, but I really want to switch to linux Mint when I upgrade my PC because windows is starting to piss me off nowadays.

It's like it keeps running worse by the day and it's rare but there's days when the windows sometimes freezes for a couple of seconds.

I heard linux is more light weight and since it doesn't have crap installed like windows does, it made me want to switch to it.

The only problem is the compatibility with games and software. How is it nowadays? is it better now? How many games support linux?

AMD Graphics Driver Timeout Woes on Pop!_OS: Advice on Switching to NVIDIA?

Reddit Linux_Gaming - 30. Oktober 2024 - 20:00

(I used chat gpt to organize my ramblings because my first draft of this post was basically just a long rant)

Greetings,

I've been a loyal user of Pop!_OS since around 2020 and have genuinely enjoyed the experience. After the release of the 7900 XTX, I decided to incorporate an AMD graphics card into my system, spurred on by a glowing review on Phoronix and hopeful that AMD's Linux performance would elevate my setup. Unfortunately, my optimism quickly waned. Initially, the 7900 XTX firmware wasn't even included with my kernel, necessitating a cumbersome workaround involving a manual download just to make the card functional.

Though frequent MESA updates have gradually improved stability, one deeply frustrating issue remains unresolved: a persistent bug that causes the graphics driver to randomly time out. When playing certain games (Satisfactory and Stranded: Alien Dawn, for example) the driver intermittently crashes, generating a ring gfx 0.0.0 timeout error that is visible in the syslog. In these instances, the entire screen freezes, and I'm abruptly logged out as the driver recovers and restarts. This problem has been well-documented by users since around 2019, yet a definitive solution or method for reliably reproducing it remains elusive.

Exasperated, I recently reverted to Windows, but I genuinely miss the Linux environment and all the flexibility it offers. I'm now considering whether switching to my RTX 3080 might provide a more stable Linux experience, or if it's simply a matter of waiting until the open-source community finds a resolution for this persistent bug.

I'd appreciate any insight on the current state of NVIDIA support on Linux, as I haven't used an NVIDIA card with Linux since 2019. My priority is unwavering stability, and I'd welcome any guidance.

PS: I've tried the many work arounds to solve the 7900 xtx issues (using corectrl to underclock or force performance mode, and the many different kernel flags for featuremask, but nothing has worked out.)

Looking Glass to play anti-cheat enabled games?

Reddit Linux_Gaming - 30. Oktober 2024 - 19:31

I was watching Eric Parker's latest video and he mentioned Looking Glass, which appears to be a way to run an undetectable VM that you can play games and use programs in with GPU passthrough. I was wondering if this could potentially be a way to play games such as Rust without dual-booting, and if so, if anyone has ever gotten this to work before?

Wireless gamepads with chatpad and good Linux support?

Reddit Linux_Gaming - 30. Oktober 2024 - 19:19

Hi guys,

On one of my Windows machines for streaming and low-spec gaming, I like to use Steam to run an Xbox controller with a chatpad for wireless remote interface. This makes it easy to use when I'm lying in bed with the gf and we want to watch something.

I would like one of these for our living room, and installed Mint on an old OptiPlex for this purpose, only to find that Xbox controllers are not plug-and-play and the community drivers wouldn't install properly for me.

This is not too bad since I would want to pick up another gamepad anyway, but I'm wondering what you guys would recommend for such a setup.

GoW:R and Dualsense?

Reddit Linux_Gaming - 30. Oktober 2024 - 18:30

So God of War Ragnarök recently released and works (with small workarounds) on Linux, however, support for the Dualsense controller appears to be lacking... I tried using the release from here, with and without Steam Input, with and without the PLAYSTATION_HID driver as well as the Proton Experimental Beta for Dualsense (and of course regular proton), but the most I got were the adaptive triggers without any rumble whatsoever. Has anyone managed to get it working? And if so, how?

Warframe crashes and keeps closing, and I want to know if I should wait and buy a new PC, or if there is something I can do and fix it?

Reddit Linux_Gaming - 30. Oktober 2024 - 17:21

Some context needed. I have recently moved from Windows 10 to Linux Mint Cinnamon. And I have downloaded Warframe, and have of course instaled Proton.

And while it seemed to work better then on Windows at the beggining, issues appeared each time I got in an open world area, with the game crashing after only several seconds in the open world area, even on the lower end settings. I tried several things to try and fix, even moving to Proton Experimental, but while it is better, and can allow me to play the mission, the game it still crashes when I try to exit the open world and enter the hub areas.

Now, it should be noted that my laptop is not the best, and I needed to play on lower end settings to make it work(and even there where small problems, even if nothing game breaking), and could not play at all on the high end settings.

These are my specifications:

-Procesor - Intel© Core™ i5-1035G1 CPU @ 1.00GHz × 4

-Graphics card - Intel Corporation Iris Plus Graphics G1 (Ice Lake)

-RAM - 8 GB

-Storage - 256 GB

I also bought it in early 2021, if it makes a difference.

Should I wait and upgrade my laptop/buy a new one/buy a new PC/buy a Steam Deck, or is there something I can do and fix it?

What's your gaming experience having btrfs on a hard drive?

Reddit Linux_Gaming - 30. Oktober 2024 - 16:57

Btrfs is slower than ext4, especially with compression enabled, but I think btrfs that can help greatly with saving space.

How does btrfs reflect when it comes to gaming? How long are your loading screens and are you able to compare it with ext4? How about world generation, enemy spawning, and other things that rely on disk performance? Are you using compression? Mentioning the games would help

I am considering starting to use btrfs, but I favor the experience and lifespan of the hard drive much higher than saving space. I am also assuming deduplication doesn't affect performance

This is especifically on a hard drive. SSDs are significantly faster than hard drives, you get no loading screens on an SSD. So I am only talking of hard drives edit: This was asked before, but everyone in the replies has an SSD.

edit2: I don't care about loading times unless it's over a minute. Everything else, I just hope it doesn't change the game's experience. I don't want the game to hang when generating new terrain or spawning enemies, or for the game to be easier or more difficult because of it.

Dragon Age 2 Ultimate Edition not working?

Reddit Linux_Gaming - 30. Oktober 2024 - 16:32

Hey guys,

I tried to play Dragon Age 2 through EA Play app but I'm able to get it to work. It keeps opening up the launcher and than either hangs on a black screen or crashes as soon as the main menu appears. The bottles/lutris logs don't say anything that helpful and tried a bunch of different proton versions

I tried running the game through steam as well but I got the same result. I tested out DA:I and ME:Legendary edition but they worked great. So I suspect it's an OLD EA game problem. Dragon Age Origins also took a while for me to get working. Am I missing something like a dependency?

PC Spec:

CPU: 7950x3d

GPU: 7900xt mesa

7900xt mesa latest

Ram: 64g

OS: Arch Linux latest, KDE Plasma latest

I used lutris, bottles and steam. Proton ge 7,45, proton 8,9,proton ge-9.10-ge9.16

Has anyone benchmarked performance on windows vs steamOS or other linux distro on the same hardware ?

Reddit Linux_Gaming - 30. Oktober 2024 - 16:24

I searched around a bit and was not able to find this.

Basically what I am asking is that on the same hardware , if you run windows and if you run Linux , which of them come out ahead in terms of fps and performance in general. Did anyone benchmark any particular game ?

I am asking this since My windows laptop ( i5 10th gen , 8 GB , integrated graphics ) is not being used that much for real work anymore, and yes I know its not ideal for gaming , but I still do ( Dishonored for instance gives me 60 fps ) , I wanted to know if I could get more fps out of this hardware in linux, ( or windows tiny ? )

Thanks for your time.

Vulkan VS DX12 Raytracing

Reddit Linux_Gaming - 30. Oktober 2024 - 13:18

Good morning dear fellow gamers,

I have an interesting question to put to you.

In a discussion on an Italian technology forum discussing with a typically windows-only user, a statement came up that I honestly can't tell if it is true or false.

The discussion had arisen from the usual diatribe about windows being the best there is no reason to use linux and blah blah blah.

To my observation that there are cases like mine where using a gnu linux system is still preferable and I have no need for windows we got to the talk of games of course.

According to this gentleman, directx12 ultimate has a significant advantage over vulkan because... (and I quote translating from Italian) :

... Only the DirectX 12 ultimate libraries at the moment totally accelerate ray tracing rendering through the GPU; OpenGL and Vulkan are only compatible but they also consume a lot of CPU resources that are perhaps already engaged during the game in managing the physics of the game itself.

This intrigued me. I don't care that much because I don't have a card that I would use RTX with anyway, but I'd be interested to see if his claims about it are true.

Can anyone confirm or disprove his statement?
