Other News about gaming on Linux

I'm considering migrating to Linux as my primary gaming machine, but I have some doubts.

Reddit Linux_Gaming - 16. März 2025 - 00:26

Long story short, I'm a Windows user, but I've also used many Linux distros for a few years now, and I currently use it for my cloud engineering job.

My primary PC gaming platform, despite having a PS5 and Switch, is almost always a bit more on the PC, and I've never really had any issues with Windows. However, the latest updates and Microsoft's policy are making me think about leaving Windows on my personal machine for good.

I'd like to know which distros are recommended for gaming, and what challenges I might encounter, regardless of performance, which I understand will depend entirely on the game (based on some benchmarks I've seen).

Another question I have is whether Steam Deck verified games are basically compatible with running on a Linux PC? For example, the new Assassin's Creed Shadow is Steam Deck verified, so could I play it on a Linux PC?

These are my PC specs:

  • Core i7 12700
  • 64GB DDR4 RAM
  • 2 SATA SSDs
  • Radeon RX 6800

CachyOS for gaming

Reddit Linux_Gaming - 16. März 2025 - 00:25

Hey all! I was paroozing around discord and I noticed some talk about CachyOS and their kernel patches. I read thru their wiki and though I have never tried it, it seems like a great distro for ppl who want that out of the box optimized system.

However I don't see it recommended often to people asking for a good gaming distro. Is there any reason why?

Anyone managed to setup Viva New Vegas in Steam/Proton (with Mod Organizer 2)? Or I should just use vanilla New Vegas..?

Reddit Linux_Gaming - 16. März 2025 - 00:15

I've used protontricks to enter "cmd" of New Vegas prefix, and installed Mod Organizer 2 using it. I have installed bunch of mods using Viva New Vegas manual, but New Vegas crashes after some title screens if launched from Mod Organizer2.

It also crashes from MO2 even if I disable all the mods...

New Vegas still works if launched from Steam though.

Or maybe it's not worth the hassle? Is New Vegas is too buggy to be played vanilla? I mean, there's so many fixes in Viva New Vegas mod list..

Thanks!

Is there a Lossless Scaling equivalent for Linux?

Reddit Linux_Gaming - 15. März 2025 - 23:50

What I'm really after is the frame gen, not necessarily the upscaler. After getting to play Elden Ring past its 60fps limitation and BG3's act 3 in buttery smooth 144fps, it's kinda hard to make the full switch to Linux 🙄

Also it helps if the app is an overlay like LS, which wouldn't cause any trouble with anti-cheats.

Success using overrides in Steam command to enable latest DLLs and preset K

Reddit Linux_Gaming - 15. März 2025 - 23:39

I have good news for those of you running Starfield on Linux with Nvidia GPUs.

As of the latest Nvidia 570.124 drivers (and possibly the version prior, 570.86 maybe?) you can use built-in present commands to override installed DLLs. You don't need to swap any DLLs manually or use DLSS Tweaks, etc.

I followed the instructions here:

https://github.com/jp7677/dxvk-nvapi/wiki/Passing-driver-settings

and set my Starfield command in Steam as follows:

MANGOHUD=1 PROTON_ENABLE_NGX_UPDATER=1 DXVK_NVAPI_DRS_SETTINGS=NGX_DLSS_RR_OVERRIDE=on,NGX_DLSS_SR_OVERRIDE=on,NGX_DLSS_FG_OVERRIDE=on,NGX_DLSS_RR_OVERRIDE_RENDER_PRESET_SELECTION=render_preset_latest,NGX_DLSS_SR_OVERRIDE_RENDER_PRESET_SELECTION=render_preset_latest %command%

As you can see in the screenshot, I'm using frame generation 310.2.0 and DLSS SR 310.2.1 with preset K.

FG 310.2.0 and DLSS SR 310.2.1 with preset K

This greatly simplifies running the game with the latest DLLs, because the driver takes care of using the latest DLLs and presets.

Unfortunately this install still runs at a penalty compared to Windows. I did file two Nvidia bug reports (including the latest drivers) per this post.

https://forums.developer.nvidia.com/t/570-release-feedback-discussion/321956/308

FWIW, I tried the equivalent with Black Myth Wukong, Cyberpunk 2077, and the Shadow of the Tomb Raider trial, all with mixed results.

Thank you A1RM4X for the tips from this video:https://youtu.be/U\_YUfWxJz6E?si=Dzqj1ZU3-Mr0nesJ

This system runs Linux Mint 22.1 with a Nvidia 4070 Ti Super.

Where to put my Witcher 1 save and Witcher 2 saves for native Witcher 2 Enhanced Edition (Steam)

Reddit Linux_Gaming - 15. März 2025 - 23:00

Used to play Witcher 2 on GOG, but it can be a pain to get it to work with the Steam Controller without Steam on Linux.

So I bought a Steam copy on sale for 3€.

I need the Witcher 1 saves if I start a new game so my decisions are carried over.

Usually, games are run through proton and Steam automatically creates directory structure of Windows drive C for the game. In that case, it's a no brainer where to put old Witcher 1 i and 2 saves - into My Documents in ~/.steam/steam/steamapps/compatdata/20920/.

But when a game is native, whats the equivalent? Or where does Witcher 2 search for saved games from Witcher 2?

Also, I have a lot of saves from GOG Witcher 2 which I would like to migrate to Steam. How do I do that?

I would really like to use the native client for Witcher 2 on Linux.

CS2 native Vulkan crashing AMD 7600XT.

Reddit Linux_Gaming - 15. März 2025 - 22:58

Even after the recent fix, I am still freezing about 5 minutes into the game. I grabbed the core dump. It seems to be crashing while rendering. I'm on Kernel 6.12.10-76061203-generic, Linux mint 22.1, system76 Thelio, mesa driver 25.0.1.

I have the same problem with Doom Eternal because it runs Vulkan as native. Do I need to send this dump to the mesa devs?

Microphone is not recognized only by CS2 - working fine in all other apps

Reddit Linux_Gaming - 15. März 2025 - 22:10

Hello,

I am on Arch using Pipewire and EasyEffects to apply some noise and echo cancellation to my microphone. EasyEffects then creates a virtual audio input called "EasyEffects Source" which is an available input option in every other app: Discord, Steam settings, Dota 2, etc.

However, it is not an option in CS2. I have also set this virtual input as my system default, but when I select "Default" as the input device in CS2, there is no input audio.

My launch options are:

ratbagctl screaming-chipmunk profile active set 1; gamemoderun %command% -novid -nojoy -sdlaudiodriver pipewire

The first bit of that just changes mouse profiles, then it's the usual gamemoderun argument with some parameters set, notably I have already tried forcing pipewire as the SDL_AUDIO_DRIVER environment variable which I saw recommended in some other threads.

Does anyone have further information or recommendations on how else to solve this?

Gaming on Linux is so easy

Reddit Linux_Gaming - 15. März 2025 - 21:12

This is a crappy old laptop with integrated graphics and everything just works, I've not played world in conflict in something like 10 years.

Empire earth, red faction, deus ex, star wars empire at war.

It all works flawlessly, tell a lie actually I did have to use a command in steam for star wars but it was the first thing on proton db, nothing more than I would've done on windows.

Jedi Fallen Order

Reddit Linux_Gaming - 15. März 2025 - 20:55

What is the Steam launch options syntax to run Jedi Fallen Order with gamemoderun and mangohud, while still bypassing the EA launcher? So far, I have this:

cmd=(%command%); cmd[-1]="$STEAM_COMPAT_INSTALL_PATH/SwGame/Binaries/Win64/SwGame-Win64-Shipping.exe"; "${cmd[@]}"

And it works to bypass the EA launcher. But I don't know how to incorporate gamemoderun and mangohud with this.

Is there a universal launcher to run .exe via Steam Proton prefix? Bottles, Lutris etc?

Reddit Linux_Gaming - 15. März 2025 - 20:41

I was able to launch RDR2 through the Rockstar Games Launcher only in Steam.

I used this guide: https://pimylifeup.com/steam-deck-rockstar-games-launcher/

All other solutions like Bottles did not work for me, after pressing the "Play RDR2" button in the Rockstar Games Launcher nothing happened, although I did a clean installation of the launcher like on Windows PC or in my Steam from the guide.

Isn't there a universal solution that will pick up all my Steam prefixes (including custom ones), all my installed Steam Protons, and allow me to launch any .exe through itself? For example, I double-click in the file manager, and it launches .exe through my environment (Steam prefix)?

The idea is to use a single Steam environment (proton prefix eg 2802383175) for everything, like in the case of creating a bottle in Bottles.

(Especially so that the running game does not glow green in Steam because it's "Add a Non-Steam Game" method)

Now I use the command, this is the solution:

STEAM_COMPAT_DATA_PATH="/home/jwadow/.local/share/Steam/steamapps/compatdata/2802383175/" STEAM_COMPAT_CLIENT_INSTALL_PATH="/home/jwadow/.local/share/Steam" "/home/jwadow/.local/share/Steam/steamapps/common/Proton Hotfix/proton" run "/home/jwadow/Links/Red Dead Redemption 2/RDR2.exe"

This enables the Rockstar Games Launcher and immediately automatically launches RDR2 through it, as it happens on Windows.

I can also enter any path to the exe after "run", not just RDR2.exe and use any programs with Windows. Bottles does roughly this, but it doesn't launch RDR2. In Steam it works perfectly and as it should.

But I care about convenience and reproducibility for Linux newbies who don't know about environment variables and stuff.

Can't download/update games on steam

Reddit Linux_Gaming - 15. März 2025 - 18:14

Steam network connection is stuck at 0

Hi everyone,

I've been using steam for over a year on my Arch system with no issues whatsoever. However, the past month have been a pain in the ass for me, I don't know when exactly it started but I suspect after I did a -Syu command.

First it started by having speeds that were painfully slow but I found a workaround by clearing cache in steam settings. Then the issue evolved, the speeds would start great and all of a sudden it'll drop to 0, a mix of clearing cache and rebooting my system fixed it randomly for me. Now it refuses to even start downloading, the network speeds are stuck at 0 and after awhile a connection timeout message would appear on the games downloading/updating. Now I'm back to the point were it start downloading then gradually go back to 0.

My system speeds are great on speedtest-cli and everywhere but steam, I disabled HTTP2 as per the wiki that fixed it for two days but now I'm stuck again I can't play games that require update or even games that require shader pre-compilation. I'm really frustrated as I tried everything and can't find any guides for a similar issue.

Note: Browsing the store in steam is working and I have great speeds, the issue only applies to downloading/updating games.

Bug in Monster Hunter Wilds (Ubuntu 24.04.2)

Reddit Linux_Gaming - 15. März 2025 - 18:03

Hey, maybe I can ask here how I could solve this problem. I have seen the pictures that my textures just disappear for no reason since I have Monster Hunter Wilds. I have tried both the latest GPU driver version and older versions. I have also tried Proton Experimental, Proton Hotfix and Proton 9.0.4, but the problem always appears after 3-20 minutes ingame. I have also tried many different ingame settings, but the problem persists. Maybe you have some more tips. :)

Tell us your Sunshine/Moonlight Tips, Tricks and Tweaks

Reddit Linux_Gaming - 15. März 2025 - 17:57

Hey there.

I'm guessing most of you are familiar with the game-streaming solution sunshine and it's corresponding client moonlight. AFAIK it originated as an open-source reverse engineering project of NVIDIA Gamestream, however i think they have moved past that.

I've been using it since a few years for PC -> TV game streaming, but there are a few problem that I've encountered on the way. I'm interested in your experiences, maybe we could use this thread as a collection of sorts for any woes regarding sunshine game streaming.

My Setup:

PC:
- Hyprland on ArchLinux, 6.13.6-2-cachyos
- Radeon 6700XT, latest mesa
- WQHD display, 144hz
- Sunshine 2025.122.141614
- WIFI only, however using AX standard and 5Ghz. TV is in the same room as PC and router, Network Speed and Latency should not be an issue. I've tested it using a cable and there seems to be no difference.

TV:
- Nvidia Shield 2017
- FullHD 60hz
- Moonlight as Client

The problems that I'm facing are mostly stutter/lag related.

- I enabled AMD lowlatency encoding using the env var AMD_DEBUG=lowlatencyenc. This seems to help a lot.

- I've also noticed that there are stuttering problems if the FPS on the two devices don't match exactly. E.g. if I'm getting 59FPS on my PC, there will be stutters on my 60Hz TV: The other direction also applies: If i don't cap the frames to EXACTLY the TVs refresh rate, the picture is not as smooth as it should be.

- No AV1 (should be available on newer GPUs) or NVENC support. So H265/HVEC and H264 are the only options. It seems that H265 gives better results.

So what's your experience?

I'm also wondering if you've found any solutions to the following:
- Automatically set Displays Resolution to the Clients Resolution and revert on disconnect.
- Automatically cap FPS (steam big-picture gamescope session?)
- Headless Display as a Source
