Linux on Legion pro 7i

Reddit Linux_Gaming - 27. Oktober 2024 - 13:05

The recent copilot bullshit was the star that broke the camels back for me and Im thinking of switching to linux full time if possible.

The only problem is due to real life circumstances I moved from my desktop pc to a gaming laptop and thats why Im asking for advice regarding the switch.

Are there any programs that could handle the mux switch, how painful are nvidea drivers because I know a few years ago it was horrible.

Im learning software engineering so I would mainly code on it and game on the side (at least as much as my time and proton allowd lol)

Thank you for your replies!

Performance compared to Windows

Reddit Linux_Gaming - 27. Oktober 2024 - 12:45

Ahoy fellow Linux users. I'm building a pc with Ryzen 5 7600 + RX 6750XT and I'm wondering how Linux performs in comparison to Windows. Should I be expecting less FPS in games through Wine or even in Linux supported games than I would have on Windows?

I'm contemplating if I should dual boot or has Linux grown enough to show about the same FPS as on Windows.

Distro recommendations are welcome as well.

Hogwarts legacy running on integrated GPU

Reddit Linux_Gaming - 27. Oktober 2024 - 12:43

I'm trying to run Hogwarts legacy using proton experimental on arch Linux. It works but is sluggish and lagging. Even though the game says it's using the Nvidia card, nvidia-smi shows that it's not. Other games work fine though. I'm using an eGPU and my system is: Intel core i5-1260P - mesa Nvidia RTX 4060 - nvidia-open-dkms

And yes I've tried prome-run and nvidia's environment variables. But what I noticed is that it shows up on nvidia-smi when launched but disappears once the game starts. Any help would be appreciated.

Control computer remotely but keep screen locked locally

Reddit Linux_Gaming - 27. Oktober 2024 - 07:55

Is it possible to control a computer desktop remotely with software such as RustDesk or Moonlight but have the computer locally locked and showing the lock screen.

Would like to control my computer in another room but not allow others in the room to see my screen or be able to wiggle the mouse or use the keyboard to mess with me while I am gaming.

Feeling disappointed with the current state of linux gaming

Reddit Linux_Gaming - 27. Oktober 2024 - 06:47

Recently built a new home theater pc, decided to put Fedora with KDE on it. This is intended to be a youtube/twitch/gaming pc, so it doesnt need to do a whole lot, and I dont intend to tinker with it.

That being said as impressive as it is to get a free OS that runs games, I feel like all the solutions are jank.

Problem 1: Wireless Xbox controller doesnt work natively. Yes I know I need drivers, and the community is awesome for making a Github repo (Xone) that worked instantly. Until a kernel/OS update stopped it from connecting. A quick post on their discord and they recomeded a fork instead which fixed the problem, for now?

Problem 2: Steam big picture doesnt open when I press the home button. I would think that with Valve pushing so hard on Linux with the SteamDeck, that it would be a supported feature.

Problem 3: Playing with a gamepad causes the pc to go to sleep since it doesnt detect input. Various workarounds are: disable sleep mode, install some random 3rd party app, etc. This seems to be a known bug for 6-7 years at this point.

Problem 4: Where is everything installed? Between flatpaks, DNF, Steam, it seems that there is no standard for where things are installed. I understand the history and distributed nature of Linux and why it is this way, but I wish a company like Valve would make a standard and have people follow it.

Problem 4.1: I installed Mangohud to see system stats as im playing. Why does it need to be something that is added to every launch option in steam for every game? Why cant it be an app thats running (Even if it has sudo privileges) that somehow detects which app is full screen?

Is this the linux experience for everybody? Are all of these issues the same on a SteamDeck? I'm not expecting things to "just work", but as somebody who is comfortable with Linux, how much hacking and fiddling do you need to do constantly just to have a system to play games on?

Missing .dll for GE-Proton9-16

Reddit Linux_Gaming - 27. Oktober 2024 - 05:07

So, over the past 4 hours, I've been attempting to run Lethal Company through Steam (keep in mind I'm completely new to Linux gaming). I have Debian 12 for my linux model. I'm using proton9-16, as stated. From what chatgpt (forgive me) says, I'm missing the .dll file. If there's any info I'm missing, please let me know.

Linux Gaming going backwards for me?

Reddit Linux_Gaming - 27. Oktober 2024 - 02:15

Hey everyone, decently seasoned Linux user here. When I first got into linux, it was exclusively on my gaming machine, and I played Counter Strike, Overwatch, ARK: Survival Evolved and a couple smaller games almost flawlessy with Proton, with better performance than on Windows, but now it isn’t like that anymore?

I stopped using Linux on my gaming machine (which is a Dell G15 5510) as I had phases where I wanted to play some other games which unfortunately required unsupported anticheat. Meantime I still exclusively used Linux on my work laptop for probably the last year at minimum, until last night when I decided I want to play some games on Linux again.

To keep this a bit shorter:

CS2 runs like complete garbage, nvidia gpu or not (native ver., although I read that might be the issue and I should use proton for it)

Overwatch runs like COMPLETE SHIT. No matter of iGPU or dGPU. Wayland doesn’t go past 61 fps. X11 either stutters to death, freezes, doesn’t detect my displays properly, cursor goes out of windows or it just crashes.

I also tried Combat Warriors, runs between 140-350 fps, constantly jumping around, super inconsistent.

I installed CachyOS, as I primarily use ArchLinux. I tried different kernels, different versions of Proton (default version 9, Experimental, Cachy, GE) as well as Plasma and XFCE. Nvidia Driver is version 565 which is the most recent from the CachyOS repos, I also tried the proprietary module and open modules. I tried every steam and lutris launch option and config I could find.

Is it the new drivers? Problems with Steam? Kernel? Proton? Wine? Im very surprised at this, as the last time I used Linux to game I was running overwatch at a constant 240 fps at medium-high settings and now I can barely launch the game!

Anyone else have a similar experience? Any fixes? Help is appreciated. I just spent the past 8 hours downloading these damn games on my poor 60mbps connection, its 2 am, im tired as hell, Im just gonna list my system info again in case I forgot something.

Dell G15 5510 Core i7 10870H Rtx 3060 mobile/maxQ 16gb memory Linux-cachyos 6.11.5-3 Nvidia driver 565 Plasma6/xfce

Don’t make fun of me having a gaming laptop💀

(Also I did always confirm with Nvidia-SMI that games were running on the nvidia chip)

TIA, sorry for bad post structure.

VR help needed. System becomes 1fps when launching SteamVR

Reddit Linux_Gaming - 27. Oktober 2024 - 01:34

Hello everyone,

Trying to get my Valve Index working on SteamVR. I launched SteamVR and it did not detect my headset but after 2 restarts of my system, it automatically detected it and everything was good.

Now as soon as I try to do the room setup, my system goes to like 1 fps and has insane freezing ONLY WHEN STEAMVR is running, if I close it then everything becomes good again.

Is there any way to get around this issue? I looked at Beatsaber on protondb(my main vr game) and it's platinum with most people having no issues but I can't even get into a game.

I tried Steam in beta vs non beta, tried GPU acceleration on vs off and still didn't solve the issue.

GPU: RTX 4090
Driver:560.35.03
Distro: Fedora 40 running KDE Plasma 6.2.2

Is it possible to force xput and vibration in a generic controller ? More in description.

Reddit Linux_Gaming - 26. Oktober 2024 - 23:30

I bought a generic controller named as cosmicbyte blitz which is sold in my country. It has usb dongle and wired connection with usbc to A cable.

On windows using dongle it fakes itself as xbox 360 controller and has vibration and works like a xbox controller and uses xinput

However on linux for some reason its identified as some generic controller and vibration doesnt work. Rest of the controls work.

Wondering if it is possible to tell the controller to may be say its connected to windows and make it use xinput and have vibration. Is it possible?

The controller has some modes like if I connect to an android phone too for example the vibration doesnt work may be cause of linux kernel.

So any idea or suggestions?
