game launches with wine but not with proton

25. November 2024 - 19:06

Im playing on Arch with an nvidiia geforce rtx 3070 ti and an intel i9 9900k. trying to play lethal company but it wont launch through steam. what happens is it builds the shader and after that nothing happens. lethal company doesnt launch and the button turns green again.
i have tried with proton experimental, 9.0-3 and 8.0-5. all yield the same result. the strange thing is that lethal company launches just fine when going into the game location and launching it via exe with wine.

ive searched on google for the problem and found some one reddit and the steam forums but the ops problem always slightly differs from mine like the game actually launching but getting stuck on a loading screen and so havnt found any posts that have my exact problem.
any help is very much appreciated!!

Mod Organizer won't stay open on desktop mode

25. November 2024 - 18:57

I've downloaded and installed mod organizer following this guys steps exactly https://youtu.be/aCpkD1PVfYE?si=Rr0lw0wZLCnHzUCU but now when I launch New Vegas or Fallout 4 on desktop mode, mod organizer opens but as soon as I touch anything on the screen it doesn't detect any touches and closes. I've managed to get it to stay open and actually use the buttons when using it on gaming mode but I'm unable to download mods or use Nexus. Any help would be appreciated.

R6 Siege on Linux

25. November 2024 - 16:42

Now that Ubisoft dropped Vulkan support, my hopes of them supporting Linux has been destroyed.

The only reason I have windows installed on my system is so that I can play Siege. My friends play the game a lot and obviously I’d like to play with them. My frustrations with Windows are also at an all time high and I want to switch to Linux. What are my options of playing this game on Linux. I’m open to any convoluted solutions as long as they perform fine enough. Are virtual machines an option?

Any help is appreciated

As for my PC specs, I have a R5 3600 and a RX 6600, 16GB Ram, SSD, 650W PSU (MSI Mag A650BN)

Linux Gaming to the Rescue

25. November 2024 - 16:27

Hi Linux_Gaming.

Apologies for the stupid post yesterday concerning an Amazon RX 7900 XTX price. This sub saved me a lot of grief and several hundred bucks.

I'm going to go sit in the corner and eat crow. Then go buy an 7900xt to end the never ending pain of nvidia.

[PSA] Are some games screwing up your resolution/displays when quitting? It may be bad calls to xrandr

25. November 2024 - 16:10

(Disclosure: I am using X11, running Linux Mint 21.3 Cinnamon on Linux 6.8.0-47-generic with an AMD card, with an ultrawide for my primary monitor and a vertical-oriented 1080p as my secondary monitor. YMMV)

TL;DR

Try this. https://blog.guntram.de/?p=172

The Problem

I encountered this problem while playing Minecraft 1.12.2 in Prism Launcher. Loading up the game changed nothing, but when I quit, my secondary monitor flashed (representing a change in display settings) and although it still showed my background, it stopped being usable -- sending all applications sent to my primary monitor.

Fixing this when this happens is simple -- just going into Display Settings, adjust the resolution for the secondary monitor to the correct one and re-activate it, save, then cancel when it asks if you want to keep the updated settings. This reliably put my monitors back the way they were, except in one case that I haven't been able to recreate.

However, having to do all this every time I quit a particular game was not something I was looking forward to. Especially because this is Linux! There must be a solution.

My (found) solution

My investigations turned up this blogpost. The problem the user described is not the exact same as mine, but through testing I discovered the root cause was the same.

Older versions of Minecraft* apparently make an xrandr call before launching and after quitting -- the former to query for current settings, and the latter to restore those settings. This second call is where everything is breaking -- I am not familiar with the functionality of xrandr or if it is even the most correct way to be doing this, so I cannot comment on reasoning, but in my case the call is effectively disabling my secondary monitor.

I did more or less what the blog post suggested, except I put an xrandr script into my own bin, since that was the first location listed in my PATH variable.

*I don't know the cut off -- I only know that 1.12.2 has this problem and the most current version at time of writing does not.

My Detailed Process
  1. Checked my PATH variable and confirmed my personal bin was first.
  2. Created a script called xrandr in my bin mirroring the content of the blog post, minus the case section.
  3. Launched and quit Minecraft, fixing the display settings as before.
  4. Reviewed the /tmp/xrandr.calls file generated by my script and noted the exact arguments passed by Minecraft when quitting, shown below (split across multiple lines for readability).
    • --output HDMI-A-0 --mode 2560x1080 --rate 59
      --pos 0x840 --output DisplayPort-0
      --mode 1920x1080 --rate 60 --pos 2560x0
  5. Added in the case section from the blog post to my xrandr script, replacing the *3840* with the full arguments above.

And done! With this, quitting Minecraft no longer messes up my display settings. I imagine other games that would break them in the same way will be defused as well.

NB: I expect that if I ever change my display settings intentionally, that I will need to re-address this in my script.

Finally

If you made it this far, thank you for reading along! I hope that this is able to help someone experiencing this same problem in the future.

Days of searching and still a noob about what to do

25. November 2024 - 14:43

Hi!

I've just bought a decent MSI gaming laptop and really don't know what to do next.

I thought about doing a Dual-boot with W11 and Linux Mint or Fedora.

-----

1) Is Mint good for gaming? I mostly do strategy games and some RTS.

-----

2) When should I partition my disk, and when do I boot Linux?

Can I partition and boot Linux even days after setting up W11? Or should I do everything right at the get-go, upon starting my new PC for the first time?

-----

3) I've read here and there that doing a virtual partition of a single SSD can lead to troubles later on, especially when W11 updates. What's the risk? That some random day my data gets corrupted and I lose all progress since the last back-up?

-----

4) Since I only have 1 SSD slot, should I then instead boot Linux on some external drive? (let's say, a 64Gb USB stick which should be enough for basic activities).

Will it mean that I'll have to load W11 first everytime I want to access Linux on my external drive? And will I be able to personalise my Linux, or will it stay in its 'factory' version?

Cheers!

Screen flickering when playing GOG Diablo + Hellfire with Proton

25. November 2024 - 12:47

I purchased Diablo + Hellfire and installed Heroic Games Launcher. Though the game can be launched but basically the screen is nearly black with the area surrounding mouse cursor showing partial Diablo text if choosing Diablo (high resolution); if choosing Diablo (Classic), the game asks "Please insert Diablo CD ...", and the game complains with error after clicking the right hand side button (no text shown on it).

My environment is Debian trixie.

How can I fix it? Please let me know if more info is needed. Thanks

PS4 controller

25. November 2024 - 12:06

Hi gang,

I'm using a PS4 controller and heroic games launcher. I used to run pop OS and the controller worked fine. Stupid me decided to distro hop. Now no matter what I do, the PS4 track pad acts as the right analog stick to look around such as Oblivion and Morrowind whereas the right analog stick is treated as a button when pressed and that's it. I also noticed wine versions and proton versions affect the controller. I must of got lucky first time round. I have it connected via USB. I've been mucking around for 3 days, even went back to Pop, now on Linux Mint where I'm not moving from just to try get it to go. Any ideas?

Auto HDR for specific games

25. November 2024 - 11:10

Is there a way to enable HDR only when launching specific games? I don't like to have HDR enabled always because text isn't as clear on my monitor for general browsing, etc. I know HDR support is in the early stages, but even it is was a simple keyboard shortcut to enable and disable HDR would be useful.

Is AMD the only option?

25. November 2024 - 09:59

I've been using a Radeaon RX 5700 XT for about 3 years now. It began to crash on the daily after only a year. At the time i was using Windows 10 and did not overclock or undervolt the card.

At the moment I'm running arch linux and has resorted to undervolting the card but it still crashes, even under minimal loads.

I can't stand using this card any more, so I'm going to upgrade.

Is it worth switching back to NVIDIA, since they are (imo) much better cards, or do I double down and get a better AMD card for the sake of Linux compatibility and price? What would you guys recommend? My budget is quite small around $300-$500 and I've found a few 3080 and 4060 second hand around the $200-$300 mark.

What graphics card do I need?

25. November 2024 - 09:27

I have a 15 year old desktop with an i5-4460, 32GB Ram and an Nvidia GeForce 750 ti.

I've not played any games since the early 90s.

4 years ago I joined Steam and bought a copy of Dirt4, but it was completely unplayable.

So I gave up on the idea of playing games.

I've just seen a video on YouTube showing a comparison of the GT 750 ti against a GT 1030 and the 750 was playing games with no issue.

Can someone explain how they are running all these games with the same GPU but I couldn't get Dirt4 to run?
