All 3D games run at 1 FPS (Mint)

Reddit Linux_Gaming - 02. November 2024 - 13:21

Howdy. So, like many, many other people I very recently decided to switch to Linux (I have minimal experience) because Windows 10 support is ending relatively soon and because Windows11 is slowly turning into hot spyware garbage. I'm no Linux expert, but I am willing to learn. So first thing I tried was of course how well it would be able to run any 3D Game. On windows I could run most games pretty well, even if not necessarily on Ultra Settings. But here I am, trying to launch a game with polygonal Graphics that I could previously run at 500+FPS and now get 1FPS (even less) in the Start Menu.

I have Linux Mint Cinnamon 22 (ver6.2.9) with the 6.8.0-48-generic Linux Kernel version.

My hardware is an i5-9400f for the CPU and a NVidia GeForce 1660Ti (6GB) as GPU and I have 16GB of RAM. (Display Server is X11)

I have the most recent NVidia Drivers, and I installed all my games on a second HDD Hard Drive (mounted on /mnt/Data) with 2TB. so I really have no idea what the problem might be.

Edit: I really have a suspicion it might be a Vulkan problem but I don't think my GPU is THAT old

The Finals > Apex Legends

Reddit Linux_Gaming - 02. November 2024 - 12:53

So, on the case it's not already been posted a million times already, for those looking for something similar to Apex then there's The Finals. It's EAC but unlike Apex is supported on Proton.

In the few hours I've played so far it's a blast and like Apex it's free to play with cosmetics etc...

Worth a play if you've not already given it a go, maybe I'll come across some of you in game.

Can kernel anticheats have compatibility issues

Reddit Linux_Gaming - 02. November 2024 - 12:49

Honestly i have no idea where to ask this so i'm asking here since you guys have more knowledge about how Mac/Windows/Linux kernels work than most others gaming communities.

Kernel anti cheats are relatively new for mainstream gaming, there is probably issues about them that we are not aware yet.

But i'm too ignorant about how kernels work for me to know if one of the potential issues can be real.

The issue:

If more proprietary kernel anti cheats start to be create for others game companies, can there be a situation where two prioprietary kernal anti cheat have compatibility issues with each other ?

Cause if that the case, it's will mean you will not be able to install theses games that use the incompatible anti cheat at the same time since their kernel anti cheat to run all the time.

I don't know shit about kernel nor how theses anti cheats manipulate it so i have no idea if this is a real issue or a non issue so i'm asking since it's popped in my mind.

Ofc i'm asking about windows since linux/mac os don't rly have them.

Black screen instead of fullscreen while gaming

Reddit Linux_Gaming - 02. November 2024 - 12:38

Hi, I am trying to run some games on Fedora 40.

Whenever i play games (using Lutris for FIFA 20, FIFA 23, GTA V) and it opens fullscreen, the screen becomes blank like here.

The app is still running and when I press Super to see all the applications running, suddenly it looks okay.

My hardware is Framework laptop with AMD 7040 series cpu, 32 gb of RAM and 2 tb ssd. I tried reinstalling the games and Lutris, but it seems like a system issue.

Does anybody know, how to fix this? Thanks

Helldivers 2 crashes?

Reddit Linux_Gaming - 02. November 2024 - 11:58

I recently switched to linux mint 22. To play helldivers I did the following from a fresh mint 22 install

  1. switched from open source drivers (nouveau) to proprietary NVIDIA drivers (currently using driver - 550)
  2. Downloaded steam from software manager (warning about 32 bit drivers that i couldn't exit out of, closed terminal and steam worked. . . idk. . .)
  3. Went into helldivers properties > compatibility and forced compatibility tool, and set it to Proton 9.0-3
  4. Downloaded helldivers 2 and when I launched it said it was preloading "vulcan shaders" which idk what that is, but i let it do its thing (for like an hour) cause I figured it was important.

Once the game launches, the intro sequence plays, and before that last animation can finish, it crashes and exits.
In windows, the game worked fine, my laptop's specs aren't the best, but it can run the game at medium settings just fine. When I launch it now, the intro sequence is quite laggy, must be around 10-15FPS.

Perhaps its that the default graphics settings are too high? But on windows I've had it on maximum while playing, and though I had like 5FPS, it never crashed.
Perhaps it's an issue of compatibility, I'm not too savvy with computers, so any help is appreciated.

LT and RT of my controller has pressure level function (Axis 5-6) but it just works as boolean (either +32767 or -32767) in Linux (Arch-KDE-Wayland). Why???????

Fedora KDE 41 - Stuttering on games in Windowed/Borderless Window

Reddit Linux_Gaming - 02. November 2024 - 11:09

Hey all, got an odd one, I have a two monitor set up, with one 2k Ultrawide as my offhand, and a more traditional 4k panel as my main monitor, for some reason, I have noticed that there's a weird stuttering whenever I play games in windowed modes, as though I'm getting 15fps while all the performance tracking tells me its a solid 60 (refresh rate of the 4k monitor).

This goes away whenever I set the game to exclusive fullscreen, but there are some games (World of Warcraft and the current Monster Hunter Wilds beta for example) that simply do not offer fullscreen on account of DX12 IIRC.

Does anyone know what's going on or can be tweaked to fix this odd performance? I was hoping to give MHWilds a go during the beta.

EDIT: Oh I am annoyed at myself, tried a couple settings and discovered it's V-sync producing this weird behaviour. Going to leave this post up in case it helps someone else with a similar issue.

Hardware considerations when building a pc for Linux?

Reddit Linux_Gaming - 02. November 2024 - 10:45

I'm done with Windows, once Windows 10 support stops i'm switching to Linux (probably Linux mint). I'll also be building a completely new pc because my current one is getting old and doesn't suit my needs as well anymore. Are there any strange things i need to remember when looking for parts? Certain issues to remember?

I'm planning on getting a disk drive (not a usb one, one that's actually in my case), would i need to get specific drivers for that? I've heard Linux mint takes care of a lot of things but i'm not completely sure what falls under "a lot".

Thank you!

MangoHud - Unable to adjust and show proper stats

Reddit Linux_Gaming - 02. November 2024 - 10:01

MangoHud version: 0.6.5-2

Distribution: Pop_OS!

Kernel version: 6.9.3-76060903-generic

CPU model: Ryzen 7 5700X

GPU model: RX 580 2048SP

GPU driver: Mesa 24.0.3-1pop1~1711635559~22.04~7a9f319

Description
I am currently unable to adjust and view the statistics correctly in MangoHud. Although I have configured it to display CPU temperature, GPU temperature, and RAM/VRAM usage, it still shows additional information, such as the engine version (DXVK) and frametime graphs, which are not part of my configuration. This inconsistency makes it difficult to see the metrics I intended to monitor. The desired options seem to be either hidden or ineffective.

Reproduction
Simplified, easy-to-follow steps to reproduce the bug:

  1. Open MangoHud in any game or graphical application.
  2. Check the displayed information to verify it aligns with the configured settings (CPU temp, GPU temp, RAM, VRAM).
  3. Note that additional information, such as the engine version and frametime graphs, is still appearing.

Actual result:
I am unable to adjust or apply changes to the statistics displayed in MangoHud, and the information shown does not match with the settings I have defined in the configuration file.

Expected result:
It should be possible to view and adjust only the specified statistics for the GPU and CPU according to my configuration, without displaying any additional information that was not configured.

Additional information

The settings:

### CPU info cpu_temp cpu_text = R7 5700X ### GPU info gpu_temp gpu_text = RX 580 ### RAM/VRAM usage ram vram # Color customization text_color=FFFFFF gpu_color=de1f1f cpu_color=EB5B5B vram_color=752b50 ram_color=752b50

~/.config/MangoHud/MangoHud.conf

In-game

If further logs or diagnostic information are needed, please let me know how to collect them.

Single Player FPS games that feel as rewarding and replayable as Competitive FPS/BR?

Reddit Linux_Gaming - 02. November 2024 - 09:19

Hey all! Posting here because I imagine other 'suggest a game' subs will just say "mOve BAcK to MicHAelSOFt BiMbOWS". Apex was my comfort game (crazy as it might sound) and I refuse to go back to Windows just to play one game. My reflexes are getting kind of slow anyway, and ultimately I hated playing with randoms who didn't want to play as a team.

So I figure it's probably time to find a new FPS with replayability/things that change every playthrough. Something that has the potential to become a regularly played game when I need to detach from the real world for a bit.

I'd class Minecraft in this category based on the definition of all of the above, but I'm aiming for something with a bit more combat/challenge I would say.

Thanks in advance!
