Looking for functionality similar to reWASD

Reddit Linux_Gaming - 12. April 2024 - 07:08

I'm looking for some advice on Linux gaming with an Xbox X|S controller.

I don't have the dexterity anymore to use Keyboard + Mouse (medical) and have been using reWASD for a couple years to do some advanced mapping.

I usually play Tactical FPS like Ready Or NoT, Zero Hour, Arma III, Ground Branch and similar, which have a LOT of keybinds. reWASD made this relatively easy by allowing me to map a keyboard button to a controller button multiple times. reWASD essentially allows me to use each button on the Xbox Controller 4 times

  1. Single press X on the xbox controller is mapped to R to reload.
  2. Double press X mapped to H to quick reload.
  3. Triple press X mapped to J for equip attachment (m203 for example)
  4. Long press X mapped to I to inspect mag (see how much ammo is left in the mag)

For games like Arma that have dozens of 100% needed burrons, something like reWASD is essential for me.

I've tried Joy2Key, AntiMicroX and a few others, and haven't been able to discover /figure out how to do something similar.

Steam controller support is amazing, but I've only been able to do 1:1 button mapping.

reWASD is literally the only reason I'm on Windows. I'm very comfortable using OpenSuSE, Fedora, Ubuntu, Pop_OS and others for well over 15 years, but to play some of these games that need well over a dozen mappings, I find myself stuck with otherwise fantastic software (reWASD) on a shitty bloatware OS.

Can anyone tell me what I'm missing in Joy2Key, or AntiMicroX, or if there is something better that I just haven't discovered?

My preference is Gnome, but I can do KDE if necessary, or any other DE if there's better support or whatnot.

Screenshots added to show some of the configs I'm using in reWASD presently

Resident Evil 4 Remake: not launching (help needed)

Reddit Linux_Gaming - 12. April 2024 - 06:29

Hi all, recently I purchased the resident evil 4 remake on steam under the assumption it wouldn't have any hiccups (all previous RE games i've played have never had an issues), but unfortunately I have been completely unable to start the game due to the following cryptic error

https://support.codefusion.technology/re4pg_oj3q12pf/?e=88500006&l=english&s=at

as an avid enjoyer of all the previous resident evil remakes and modern spins this is really upsetting for me as i had been anticipating playing this game for months, i'd really like to be able to play this game and not have to return it so any advice is appreciated

I've done all the basic troubleshooting steps, use different versions of wine/proton (experimental, latest GE, hotfix, GE7-53 (saw a comment from someone that said this version worked on amd when the game first launched))

tried on both X11 and Wayland (neither change anything)

Forcing the use of different amd gpu drivers (amdvlk and radv) through the use of the VK_DRIVER_FILES env variable

i was even desperate enough to install gnome and try it on there (X11 and Wayland) still to no success or change from this error log

This is rather puzzling as i've read reports on protondb of people with similar hardware and software running the game just fine

System information:

CPU: i7-12700K

GPU: AMD 6600XT

RAM: 32GB Corsair vengeance

DE/WM: KDE Plasma 6.0.3

OS: CachyOS (Fork of arch)

Kernel: 6.7.9

Running steam from the commandline doesn't produce any useful information

Vulkan package info

please let me know if there is anymore information i can provide and thanks in advance

I can't believe I can stream in HDR on linux

Reddit Linux_Gaming - 12. April 2024 - 04:58

i wanted to share my findings with you all for anyone else that might be curious about streaming in hdr using sunshine and moonlight.

host: windows running sunshine and nvidia

client: opensuse with amd gpu and a steamdeck build of moonlight that has vulkan enabled with the latest gamescope. plasma6 with hdr + vrr enabled.

command: gamescope -f -W 2560 -H 1440 --hdr-enabled --hdr-debug-force-output -- ./Downloads/Moonlight-r2406-x86_64.AppImage

full hevc hdr10 straight to my eyeballs streaming 2k@120 to my 165hz monitor. on wifi.

absolutely insane. i can't believe this moment is here.

notes amd
  1. amd seems to be the gpu of choice for linux as it has the least amount of problems. display port > hdmi.
  2. libreelec running on a usb also supports hdr for those that want to watch hdr content, although libreelec seems to claim raspberry pi 4/5 are the only devices that support actual 10/12 bit content and i might just be seeing hdr 8bit. further arguments happen with kodi development who claim that libreelec is not actually producing "proper" hdr and "proper" hdr in linux is still a ways away due to issues in the DE, kernel, vulkan, mesa and so forth.
  3. couldn't get gamescope embedded to work but i also didn't look into it enough
intel
  1. the state of intel d/i gpu on linux is sad unfortunately. while technically supporting hdr400/600 hdr10(dv?), it is janky in windows and jankier in linux.
  2. libreelec with intel does trigger hdr successfully
  3. mpv can deliver hdr content provided you tell mpv what to map the hdr10/dv content to, otherwise something in vulkan / mesa isn't mapping the content from the media to what intel can handle and nothing will display.
  4. gamescope embedded using intel does not work, causes gamescope to crash due to missing features in gamescope and in mesa.
  5. gamescope nested with intel works, but with the same issue mpv has. if you try to force hdr using intel the exact same error will appear which points to libplacebo and from there who knows. unfortunately, you can't tell gamescope what to map the hdr10 content to.
  6. specifying the refresh rate using gamescope nested will cause the black frames to appear in every other frame for some nice flickering.
nvidia
  1. lol

now i'm going to try steam games in hdr with vrr and see how far i get.

thank you devs from all walks of life, gamescope, kde, wayland, amd, moonlight and sunshine and so on. that's not even a comprehensive list of developers that need credit for making hdr a possibility in linux well before the estimated projected time of sometime in the next decade.

shoutout to mediatek chipset and the mt7912u drivers for providing a wonderful wifi experience over usb.

Apex Legends on Fedora 40, system hang diagnosis help needed!

Reddit Linux_Gaming - 12. April 2024 - 04:13

TL;DR - Fresh install (GNOME), Nvidia proprietary drivers (from rpmfusion-nonfree-nvidia-driver repo) sometime after getting into a map (firing range or BR), the entire game will seize up/freeze/hang and crash (usually it'll take Steam with it after a few seconds), and the desktop becomes unable to open apps, uncached app icons are not loaded, and the PC cannot shut down correctly unless I hold down the power button. After verifying game files, I found it worked properly for one session, but the subsequent ones would lead to the same issues.

Preface: I have a working Fedora 39 install with Apex installed the same way (Steam flatpak, proprietary drivers, same video settings, same hardware), and I've never experience anything like this. Nothing useful shows up in the logs from what I can tell as nothing is logged after my desktop enters this state. This issue does NOT happen in other games as far as I can tell. I've chalked it up to Fedora 40 being in pre-release, but as it stands, it's currently in the same shape as it's going to be when it releases next week, so I fear this issue will remain.

Fixes I've tried:

  • Verifying game files
  • Reinstalling game
  • Reinstalling OS
  • Different Video settings
  • Different Proton versions (Hotfix/Experimental)

General specs:

  • RTX 3080 (proprietary drivers)
  • Ryzen 5800X
  • NZXT N7 B550 (BIOS is updated)
  • Fedora 40 GNOME (minimall install- basically just gnome-shell, networking drivers, fedora workstation repos)
  • Steam Flatpak

I'm genuinely just at a loss. I really didn't want to spam this sub with more tech support, but I'm not sure where else to ask. I couldn't find any other mention of similar experiences nor general Proton game crashes with the same symptoms I've had. I just find it odd my entire desktop gets put into a literally unusable state after Apex crashes. The apps themselves usually continue working, but as mentioned, I can't open new ones and System Monitor cannot properly end tasks either. If any other info or anecdotal experiences may be helpful, I'm happy to provide! Thanks in advanced!

Am I crazy or?

Reddit Linux_Gaming - 12. April 2024 - 02:26

Am I crazy or is gaming performance on Radeon RX 79XX alot better on Linux vs windows? Even ray tracing I've noticed performs better on Linux. I'm on ARCH btw.

What makes you using Linux over Windows?

Reddit Linux_Gaming - 12. April 2024 - 01:33

The answer to that question would be way more easy to answer for people who dont care about gaming. But on this sub it might be a bit more interesting. I mean, Windows is objectively far superiour to Linux if it comes to gaming. Everything works out of the box (at least games that arent decades old), no driver problems and overall its just far more straight forward. Linux on the other hand... yeah, its complicated. Its a gamble if (or how good) the game works, you need a lot of workarounds for all kinds of weird bugs, and Nvidia GPUs are a constant source of trouble (at least for now, at least most of the issues will soon be fixed). And even outside of gaming you are bound to have more problems to deal with compared to Windows.

So, what makes you dealing with all that stuff anyway?

Looking for advice on a unix based new build for a beginner

Reddit Linux_Gaming - 12. April 2024 - 00:29

I’m planning a new PC build and need some advice on setting up a Linux/UNIX system.

While my professional background is in enterprise UNIX systems,

I’m less familiar with the personal or non-enterprise UNIX/Linux setups available.

And as much as it is embarrassing to admit, I am pretty noob when it comes to pc building

Here’s what I’m aiming for with this build:

Purpose Requirements:

1. VM for Occasional Use (Windows VM) • Gaming: Occasional gaming - CyberPunk or any other games that might spark my interest in the future • Music Production: only bottleneck I for see; wondering if there’d be latency
  • FL studio
  • main plugin : Serum

For the VM; I want to have the ability to “unmount” the gpu from my main OS and “hook” it to the VM

So I am guessing based on that, I need a motherboard which has an inbuilt video card

2. Unix as Main Driver: • The system will cater to my daily needs (Web browsing, Netflix) and UNIX development work. • I prefer setting up a separate partition for development, akin to AIX’s VIO setup, where two instances can run simultaneously, rather than opting for dual boot.

Given these requirements, I’m seeking recommendations on:

• Which Linux distributions would best support these needs with stability and ease of setup?
  • Hardware specifications

I am most likely not going to buy all the hardware at one go, rather I am going to buy one or two piece each month; as I have other financial commitments in the upcoming months.

Thanks in advance everyone !!

Heroic Flatpak HDR not working on OLED SD

Reddit Linux_Gaming - 11. April 2024 - 22:53

Anyone else encounter this? It happens on all three games I’ve tried it with. I posted on the main r/SteamDeck but then remembered that sub’s just for cat photos and the ban hammer 😂🥲

Is it possible only 800 people are online in league on Linux at a time?

Reddit Linux_Gaming - 11. April 2024 - 22:44

new dev vlog:https://www.leagueoflegends.com/en-us/news/dev/dev-vanguard-x-lol/

they claim only 800 people were only in league on linux, but they probably dont factory in all the people who quit, in the await of vanguard.

Q: What about Linux?

We've never officially supported Linux, and it's true that the current Lutris-based implementation for League (that uses wine) will not be able to satisfy the Vanguard driver requirements. Linux does not currently afford us sufficient ability to attest boot state or kernel modules, and the difficulty in securing it is only compounded by all the frustrating differences between distributions. Even allowing emulation is an exceptionally dangerous game, as many cheats could then just run on the host, manipulating or analyzing the VM in a way that would be invisible to Vanguard within it.

Half of anti-cheat is making sure the environment hasn't been tampered with, and this is extremely hard on Linux by design. Any backdoors we leave open for it are ones developers will immediately leverage for cheats, and yesterday, there were just over 800 Linux users on League. We have evaluated this risk to not be worth the payoff.

Riot Games talk Vanguard anti-cheat for League of Legends and why it's a no for Linux

Gaming on Linux - 11. April 2024 - 21:16
While previously you've been able to play League of Legends on Linux, and there's some pretty die-hard fans using Wine to play it, that's set to end soon with Vanguard being introduced.

Counter-Strike 2 FPS Question?

Reddit Linux_Gaming - 11. April 2024 - 20:11

I have an RTX 2060 NVIDIA video card. I think CS on Linux gives lower fps than Windows DX12. Vulkan vs DX12 situation. So how much is this fps difference and should I use X11 or has Wayland gotten better considering my graphics card?

Decent 1080p monitor for under 200 USD?

Reddit Linux_Gaming - 11. April 2024 - 19:42

My current monitor is an 8 year old ASUS 1080p monitor that only runs at 60Hz. I've heard that grabbing a 144/165 Hz refresh rate monitor is worth it. I use Plasma 6 on Wayland and just want something good that you'd guys recommend below 200 USD.

/dev: Vanguard x LoL - League of Legends

Reddit Linux_Gaming - 11. April 2024 - 19:41

Interesting article. I think it has 2 main points: 1) even with server anti cheat, it's really hard to block Chesters 2) it will always be easier to cheat on Linux because it's ny design so free and customizable.

Switching from Mint to another distro for primarily gaming?

Reddit Linux_Gaming - 11. April 2024 - 19:35

Hello all,

I made the switch from Windows to Linux a few months ago.

I decided to use Mint as my first distro and I love it and I know a lot more now than I used to. I decided to try KDE(I have been daily driving Cinnamon) as the desktop environment just because I have a Steam Deck and I love the UI.

KDE on Mint so far has been amazing. It is working as it should and is very stable. The only issue I had was with the compositor which I disabled.

Essentially the only reason I am considering switching distros is because Mint is using an older version of KDE and I would like a distro that stays on an updated version since things like HDR and Wayland is big for me.

I feel like I wouldnt have too much of a hard time switching since from what I see, the DE seems to matter more than the distro in terms of daily basic usage.

Would you guys recommend I stick to Mint and leave as is or try a new distro? If a new distro then what exactly would be something thats up to date but not very difficult like Arch?

If it helps, I am on an Nvidia GPU running an RTX 4090 so a distro with nice Nvidia GPU support like Mint(from my experience) would be heavily preferred.

Thank you!
