[WIP] Calling all Devs, 3D Artists & Designers! Let's build "Super Smash TUX," an open-source fighting game together!

Reddit Linux_Gaming - 15. Oktober 2025 - 17:32

Hey everyone,

Ever dreamed of a chaotic, fun fighting game where the iconic mascots of the open-source world duke it out? Well, stop dreaming and start coding/designing/modeling!

I'm excited (and a bit nervous) to announce the initial phase of Super Smash TUX: Open Source Brawl, a community-driven, open-source fighting game inspired by the greats.

The vision is simple: create a fast-paced, fun, and moddable platform fighter featuring our favorite FLOSS (Free/Libre Open Source Software) mascots. Imagine Tux the Penguin throwing down with Beastie the BSD Daemon, Wilber from GIMP painting the stage, or the GNU gnu charging into battle.

This is not a commercial project. This is a passion project, a love letter to the open-source community, built by the community.

We need YOUR help to make this a reality!

We're looking for volunteers of all skill levels in the following areas:

· C++/Game Developers: The core of the project is being built (with a framework like Godot or maybe SDL2). We need help with core gameplay mechanics, netcode for online play, character logic, and the overall engine architecture. · 3D Artists & Animators: We need character models, stages, and animations! Can you model a charismatic Tux? A fearsome yet cute Beastie? Your skills are desperately needed! · 2D Artists & UI/UX Designers: From the main menu and HUD (health bars, damage %) to character portraits and promotional art, we need a cohesive and cool look. · Sound Designers & Musicians: We need epic chiptune tracks for the stages and satisfying sound effects for punches, kicks, and special moves. · Game Designers: Help us balance the roster, design fun and fair stages, and brainstorm character move sets that truly represent their "source" project.

How to Get Involved:

This is a community project, so all discussion and collaboration will happen out in the open!

  1. Check out the GitHub Repo: All the initial code, concept documents, and contribution guidelines are here: https://github.com/DianaGodessOfTheHunt/Super_Smash_Tux
  2. Look at the Issues: The GitHub Issues tab is our primary todo list. Look for issues tagged good first issue if you're new, or help wanted in your area of expertise.
  3. Join the Discussion! Let's use the GitHub Discussions tab (or a linked Discord server if one is set up in the repo) to talk about ideas, share concepts, and organize ourselves. What character should we add first? What should their final move be?

No contribution is too small. Whether you fix a tiny bug, create a single sound effect, or just share feedback and ideas, you'll be helping to build something awesome for the community.

Let's build the open-source fighting game we all want to play!

Qames donte Run on the GPU

Reddit Linux_Gaming - 15. Oktober 2025 - 17:30

Hey, I’ve recently run into a weird issue on Pop!_OS. All my Steam games (like War Thunder and Enlisted) used to run perfectly fine, but now they’re suddenly stuck at around 2 FPS.

When I check with nvidia-smi, I only see Xorg and gnome-shell — so it looks like my GPU isn’t being used at all. I already reinstalled the NVIDIA driver (550) and Vulkan packages, but that didn’t help.

I’m on a desktop PC (no hybrid GPU). Steam was installed through the Pop!_OS Store, so it’s probably the Snap version. Any idea how I can make Steam/Proton actually use my NVIDIA GPU again?

Thanks in advance 🙏

Any word on a Lutris update (or could I switch to Heroic)?

Reddit Linux_Gaming - 15. Oktober 2025 - 17:14

Hi,

The last 6+ years I've been gaming without issues using Lutris on Debian Stable. I always run the latest kernel and MESA from backports (if they are in there), but even so, the Lutris flatpak normally had even more recent MESA drivers. However, Lutris' flatpak hasn't been updated for a year. The runtimes it runs on are now unsupported and the MESA flatpak it uses is now older than Debian's backports.

I've looked into switching to Debian's version of Lutris so this can use Debian's newer drivers, but it has a HUGE amount of dependencies. It also requires enabling multi-arch and the installation of Wine32, which I don't really want to do. I like massive things such as Lutris to be apart from the base system.

Is there any word somewhere with regard to the next update of Lutris? I see lots of activity in the Github repository, but no new releases for a year there either.

Another option would be Heroic. Last time I looked though, it does not have an option to limit the number of CPU-cores for a game, and I have three games that require this setting; without it, they won't launch. (They can't handle a 7950X with 32 threads apparently). Can I somehow limit the number of CPU threads for a game outside of Heroic? I haven't been able to find anything like a Wine setting or something.

The one thing I found is:

taskset -c 0 wine application.exe

I have no idea if 'taskset -c 0' would work as a prefix command in any launcher, because it would be outside the flatpak.

Automatic HDR handling

Reddit Linux_Gaming - 15. Oktober 2025 - 17:02

Hi guys,

I just got myself a HDR monitor and love it.

What I really didn't like was having HDR enabled on the desktop when watching videos or working. I enabled and disabled HDR in system settings every time played a game. That kinda annoyed me.

I tried around a bit and came to a solution for this. I wrote following shell script (nerds pls don't judge me, I never did shell scripting before 😅)

#!/usr/bin/env bash OUTPUT="output.DP-1" DISPLAY_WIDTH="2560" DISPLAY_HEIGHT="1440" REFRESH_RATE="300" # Enabling HDR kscreen-doctor "${OUTPUT}.hdr.enable" "${OUTPUT}.wcg.enable" # Wait a sec until all settings are applied sleep 1 # Launching game ENABLE_HDR_WSI=1 DXVK_HDR=1 gamescope -f -W ${DISPLAY_WIDTH} -H ${DISPLAY_HEIGHT} -r ${REFRESH_RATE} --force-grab-cursor --hdr-enabled -- "$@" # Disabling HDR kscreen-doctor "${OUTPUT}.hdr.disable" "${OUTPUT}.wcg.disable"

I put this script into /usr/local/bin/autohdr.sh and then in the steam launch settings of a game I want to use HDR in I type:

autohdr.sh %command%

What it does is basically enabling HDR on the output device in OUTPUT, then running the game using gamescope, and after the game closes, it disables HDR again. I tested this in KDE Plasma on Garuda and it seems to work perfectly.

If you want to try it, of course you need to set the variables of your display adapter, resolution and refresh rate.

What do you think of the implementation, what could be improved?

What I would like to improve specifically is having determined the output adapter automatically using kscreen-doctor -o. But I have no idea how that works. Could anyone provide help with that?

CS2 - console not working with wayland & hyprland

Reddit Linux_Gaming - 15. Oktober 2025 - 15:50

Hi everyone

I installed Omarchy (was using regular Arch before) and haven't played CS2 for a while. So I don't know if it's due to Omarchy or the current patch from a few days. But my console is not accepting any input.

Whenever I change my CS2.sh file to default to wayland instead of x11 via:

export SDL_VIDEO_DRIVER=wayland

I simply cannot type anymore in the console. I can copy text into the console without problems or delete the pasted text. The keyboard also works without any issues in steam or when playing cs2. It's just the console that is not accepting any input.

If I set the cs2.sh to use X11 it works perfectly fine. So it has to do with Wayland. But the keyboard is working everywhere perfectly fine as far as I can tell with the correct layout.

Test Drive Unlimited (TDU) on Linux

Reddit Linux_Gaming - 15. Oktober 2025 - 15:27

Hi,

since the original TDU does not run well on my Windows I tried to install it on Nobara. Turns out I cannot even get it to install from disc.

I tried by using the "autoinstaller" from Lutris, but the game installer crashes with errorcode 17152. The installer crashes at the same time (copying the game files) when launching with Wine.

If I use an already installed version of the game (installed on Windows), the game won't start because it thinks that there is no CD inserted, even though there is.

Anyone has an idea?

Why is my CPU and GPU usage so low?

Reddit Linux_Gaming - 15. Oktober 2025 - 15:19

Both pics were taken while I was playing World of Warcraft.

The 1st pic was taken when just standing outside of the city, running 144 FPS (capped).

The 2nd pic was in an epic bg - 40v40 people, a ton of special effects. I usually get 13-30 FPS in these games. I understand that my PC is old and I am not expecting more from it.

Recently one of my GPU fans stopped spinning, so I replaced both the original ones with new, bigger fans. I had some problems with the setup and ended up reinstalling the GPU driver. I do not remember the usages prior to that change, but I remember it always made sense - CPU near 100, GPU low so CPU is too weak. Or gpu temp too high, so it limits it's power. But for current state, I have no explanation.

The only thing i see out of order is the RAM. I don't think it was getting that full before, but even this does not explain the low usages since it is the same in both cases.

Could anyone please help me understand what is going on, or how to troubleshoot? I don't even know what I should be looking for here.

Steam doesnt wanna use my NTFS drive as a steam library even though it has worked before.

Reddit Linux_Gaming - 15. Oktober 2025 - 14:41

So ive been using mint for the past like day or so and ive installed steam recently, but for some reason it just doesn't wanna add my NTFS drive. Thing is: that never happened to me before. When i used linux it allowed me to use my NTFS drive just fine. Mint, EOS, And Nobara, they all let me do so without fail! But i reinstalled mint and now it doesnt wanna add my drive anymore. I will not be using any external drives as i am incapable of doing so at the moment.

I've tried editing the fstab file but it didnt work. I've tried installing flatseal to allow steam to use my drive, it also didnt work. And mounting it to a different place also doesnt work.

do feel free to include windows stuff inside, im dualbooting! (win 10)

Linux on laptop - bad performance, insane temperatures or just me?

Reddit Linux_Gaming - 15. Oktober 2025 - 14:01

Windows is starting to get more and more annoying, so I want to get rid of it completely. I've ran Ubuntu for a few years in the past on an MSI GT70 laptop, which ran absolutely fine, even when gaming. I have an Asus Tuf Gaming A16 FA607PI now (Ryzen 7845HX and RTX 4070) and in Windows, performance is amazing. When idle or browsing, it's quiet and low temperatures. With Ghelper instead of Armoury Crate I can finetune the fan curves to keep temperatures and sound well balanced.

Now I had decided to try Nobara, on the desktop it works just fine, with AsusCTL (ROG control) I tuned the fan curves and set the CPU power limits as well. But for some reason, when gaming for about 10 minutes, the CPU suddenly runs at 1GHz and reaching 100 degrees. GPU at about 87 degrees. Removing all power limits back to default I see the CPU around 1.5-2GHz in games, but the laptop sounds like a jet engine. In Windows, the CPU runs just fine at 3.5-4.5GHz in games.

Performance is usually fine for a few minutes, apart from some games where I see my fps at 1/3 or halved compared to Windows, but other than that it seems OK.

I double checked the Nobara updater to make sure everything was updated as well, and drivers were the most recent.

Is there anything else I can try? Maybe a different distro? Or other tools to monitor CPU/GPU? The install is on a separate SSD so easy to swap installs.

Considering getting annolder thinkpad, fixing it up, and running linux for daily light work and older games. Any recommendations on what linux install to use? (mint, bazzite, etc?)

Reddit Linux_Gaming - 15. Oktober 2025 - 13:25

As the title suggests, im considering sticking up a middle finger to the modern windows OS ecosystem and modern hardware ecosystems and running linux on a thinkpad, idk which exactly but not looking for anything over $100 ish dollars (would enjoy something like the T470). I know that limits performance but ultimately i just want something basic for word processing and uni work, with a VM for windows based GIS software, and some light games that are easy to run or older.

Ultimately, i used Ubuntu to varying success on a chromebook in 2016. I have come to the conclusion mint might be the best choice now since i havent tinkered in years? Or Bazzite (even though its more limited it seems very plug and play) any help is appreciated

Just a casual PSA - Steam versions of Ninja Gaiden 4 and Keeper works perfect out of the box on arch, nvidia

Reddit Linux_Gaming - 15. Oktober 2025 - 13:14

Since Microsoft almost killed Xbox and their marketing and scheduling is dead for sure - there are 3 games releasing in about the same time - Ninja Gaiden 4, Keeper and Outer World 2, so they can compete with themselves better.

First two works with 0 issues on 4080 arch, so if you're thinking about getting these on Steam - you should be fine. No login to Xbox Live required. All are UE5 games, but at least Ninja Gaiden 4 seems to be well optimized for high fps.

Keeper seems to be a very unique Double Fine game - art direction and narrative seems great to me.

Attempted to port my game to Linux and macOS

Reddit Linux_Gaming - 15. Oktober 2025 - 12:10

Sadly not all features work compared to windows, but i'm suprised by the results.
Naturally wayland won't let me to track mouse movement outside the game's (small) window so the score multiplier doesn't work correctly, though i have some ideas on how to fix that.

The demo is out if someone wants to give it a try, and i'd appreciate a wishlist:
