DS5 not being detected by Steam when connected for the second and following times.

Reddit Linux_Gaming - 12. April 2024 - 19:42

After boot, I connect my DS5, the blue lights on the sides light up and also a white light in the center.

I play extensively, no issues or whatsoever but it comes to a point that I need a little break and I turn off my controller so that it does not waste more charge.

When I come back, I turn the controller on just like before, but now it only has the blue bars but not the white dot light in the middle, and it is not being detected by Steam.

I quit Steam, turn off the controller, turn it back on again, but the lights remain just blue without the white indicator light.

What could possibly be making the controller connect differently after the first time?

After I reboot my PC I can connect successfully, as a first time, and it gets detected and I play once again with no issues.

I am so confused and I cannot understand what could possibly be the issue.

I have already messed around with all the Steam input settings and nothing seems to be doing it for me.

Any ideas?

Thanks a lot in advance.

Edit: this was not an issue that used to happen before, and I did not change anything related to this.
Could it be related to Steam or Bluetooth updates?

Help with getting LinVAM running for a complete and utter noob

Reddit Linux_Gaming - 12. April 2024 - 19:41

I finally decided to try out mint in a dual boot beside windows 10 yesterday. While going through game compatibilities, I found that Voice Attack doesn't work through Linux or by using Proton, so I started looking for alternatives. I came across LinVAM https://github.com/aidygus/LinVAM

I've been doing my best to get it running through Terminal, but I'm now stuck here:

VRR newbie questions (Plasma 6, Wayland, AMD)

Reddit Linux_Gaming - 12. April 2024 - 19:25

So as of today I have a third monitor, and it’s my first with VRR as well as my first non-CRT with a refresh rate over 60 Hz (165). And for years and years I barely cared about the details: I usually just disabled all the Vsyncs and used in-game frame limiters when things got out of hand, plus (back on Xorg) TearFree (Mesa) and EnableCompositionPipeline (Nvidia) so the image wouldn’t shred itself into ribbons. Now I find myself confused all over again. Yay. :/

Plasma settings:

  • Should I allow screen tearing for fullscreen windows? I used to get awful tearing on Xorg (but there were options to prevent it), but with or without this option enabled I’ve never seen any on Wayland at all. I imagine this option has less obvious ramifications?

In-game settings:

  • VSync, yes or no? The more informed-sounding people say yes, but do they mean in-game or system-wide? How does this interact with Plasma’ “screen tearing allowed in fullscreen apps” option? Is that VSync? Cuz there’s no VSync in Plasma’s System Settings.

  • (Special case:) Tearing, yes or no? This is an option in the .ini for the Skyrim SE Display Tweaks mod, without which (the mod, not the option) the engine is locked to 60 FPS. Again, how does this interact with Plasma’s own setting?

  • Frame rate limiters, yes or no? Should I let VRR take care of it or find a frame rate that my hardware can deliver consistently?

I don’t yet see a difference using the COMPUTE!!!! profile of my GPU (saw this suggested multiple times). I’ve never tweaked GPU settings at all and it’s a bit outside my comfort zone as far as messing about on my own goes.

The monitor in question: 2560x1440 @ 165 Hz over DisplayPort. CPU: Ryzen 9 5900X. GPU: Radeon RX 5700 XT, 8 GB. DE: Plasma 6 (Wayland). OS: btwOS. Kernel: 6.7.0.6.realtime1-1-rt. Setup chosen more for audio production than gaming, but it generally works for that too :)

Need recommendation for Desktop Environment

Reddit Linux_Gaming - 12. April 2024 - 18:40

I'm currently using KDE Plasma with NVIDIA. But using it with X11 is not a great experience. Tried wayland everything is perfect until I start to play games, there is something weird happening with frames. So my only option is to use X11. But really sucks, whenever I open any app like settings, dolphin, discover, konsole there is always lag frame rate jumps from 60 to 30,9,15 fps.

any recommendation for Desktop Environment beside KDE Plasma ??

ohh one more thing, I use arch btw

Dishonored Definitive Edition / Wine / Mouse problem

Reddit Linux_Gaming - 12. April 2024 - 18:11

Hi there.

Trying to play Dishonored Definitive Edition using Wine (9.5) and Lutris (0.5.17).

Game runs fine, but there's a weird problem with the mouse that means I can't turn more than a certain distance - i.e. I move the mouse left and I turn a few degrees (I don't know, maybe 30 degrees) left, but however much I move the mouse after that I can't turn any further left. Ditto if I try and move right. So there's no way for me to turn round.

It feels like there's a hidden mouse pointer, and when it hits the left or right side of the screen it won't go any further, so no more turning.

I've tried enabling/disabling mouse warping that doesn't change anything. I've tried with/without virtual desktop, no difference.

Anyone had a problem like this before?

Thanks.

[Tech support needed][Steamdeck] Custom ressolution on Arch linux with X11 on all AMD system.

Reddit Linux_Gaming - 12. April 2024 - 18:10

Hello, I recently purchased 4k60fps HDMI dummy plug. I am trying to run my system Headless with ressolution of 1440p 144hz with Sunshine streaming server set up.

Right now I am encounering issuese with Xrandr utility where if I create custom mode for that hdmi dummy plug. I can't select it in setting menu or force it with xrandr --output VGA1 --mode "1440@144".

Where is the problem guys? I am loosing my mind from this.

forcing xrand --output makes screen flick for 2 seconds before defaulting to 1080p60.

same script work on my main PC no issues.

No - vanguard is not running all the time. Can we stop spreading this misinformation?

Reddit Linux_Gaming - 12. April 2024 - 18:10

In the same why I have a tablet driver installed for osu - that the driver is not running until I open up a program to make those calls for it to be active with my tablet plugged in, so in vanguard.

vgc.exe is not running, nor is the service running until valorant launches (and soon / eventually league). I have used every program I can find by microsoft to see every exact process that is running, and vanguard is never found unless valorant is open.

Newest article from Riot on Vanguard.

Per their words as well:

Vanguard is not really "running all the time." The driver loads at boot, but nothing is making calls to it, and there's no network connectivity until you run one of Riot's games. It's literally just sitting there (menacingly), so that it can attest to the fact that nothing's happened between Windows loading and the game starting that would break the operating system.

When you launch League, the Vanguard client contacts the driver to confirm that it thinks everything is 100%, and if so, you receive a valid anti-cheat session and may connect to the game server. Instructions from the client then start enabling features within the driver to watch for things that might tamper with the signed League process and prevent them. You can always disable the driver whenever you'd like-you'll just need a fresh reboot to "recertify" the integrity of the trust chain before you jump into game.

So can we chill now? Funny how this article was posted 24 hours ago and everyone just seems to ignore this, once again. The argument is very old and un-amusing to say its "a rootkit running all the time probably collecting all your data!" or "it makes other games crash!" or "makes your pc run worse!" which indeed none of these are true.

For those who might use a VM / GPU passthrough to play league, you will have 0% performance impact, because the driver is just there to make sure your device is trusted.

Hey guys, can y'all recommend me a distro?..

Reddit Linux_Gaming - 12. April 2024 - 18:03

I'm a newbie to Linux systems, I had experience only with Ubuntu and Debian. I saw a post on this subreddit where a guy was like "OH GOSH!! I INSTALLED GARUDA LINUX, INSTALLED GAMES AND OH SHOOT! IT WORKS!!!", He was so glad, and I thought that installing games on Linux is a big pain in ass (Cuz I had a lot of problems with it too).

There's a lot of troubles I had while using Ubuntu and Debian, for example - for some reason a lot of stutters and stable 5 fps in games on linux systems (Maybe I poorly install drivers?), besides, I have nvidia videocard.

So, I'd like to use a distro without any damn crashes, with working games and with decent interface. (Common distros like ubuntu and debian are welcome)

Thanks for your replies! (If I'll get any)

Linux Gaming on Dell Precision M6600 Laptop with Intel HD 3000 and SSD plus Core i7 2760QM and 8GB Ram

Reddit Linux_Gaming - 12. April 2024 - 16:41

Last year I tried using MX Linux 23 and Mint Debian Edition as my primary os for gaming, GTA IV worked fine and I know that Blur 2010 Game will work ok in Lutris Flatpak or Deb package, its GTA V I am kinda concerned about.

In Windows 10 Debloated I get between 10 to 20 fps with good frame timing but it does hang up sometimes, I particularly blame Windows 10 since a lot of stuff I had to remove.

Got 5 fps last time in Mint in 2023 in GTA V.

I mean I would love and just love to get back on Linux again since I have been on and off since the Windows 8 fiasco. I really am starting to even hate debloated Windows 10 and I just don't want any version of Windows after this on any and any hardware.

Can you please tell if anything has improved even with uwu lutris update, can I play GTA 4 and 5 side by side without dealing with any trouble? This is really keeping me away from Linux for the time being. Advice needed please?

Hyprland

Reddit Linux_Gaming - 12. April 2024 - 16:38

Are many people here using hyprland? It’s my first tiling window manager and gaming is pretty hit or miss. Gamescope helps in a few but games like halo infinite are just hanging during startup for me.

Weird Mouse Movement on Selected few games.

Reddit Linux_Gaming - 12. April 2024 - 16:34

Hi, I'm having issue with games like COD all series, NMS, many other games using Lutris.
I'm using Nixos with hyprland, few people saying it's mouse acceleration. I still don't understand if it's a issue.
Problem: Mouse moving uncontrollably, like if i move up/down or left/right it moves different than what I'm doing.
Normal usage of mouse works fine along with other games like CS2, Apex legends works completely fine.

Here is the video proof of what happening, it like mouse movements are predefined.
Uploaded video in YT as this channel doesn't allow video upload.
https://youtu.be/kFkrFvZnCng
whatever my mouse movement is it always moves it's own ways. not following my mouse movement.

Serious question: will Linux always be unsupported by competitive online games because of how free it is?

Reddit Linux_Gaming - 12. April 2024 - 16:22

Hi everyone,

I wanted to open a serious discussion about the competitive online gaming, hoping it won't end up like the the two post about LoL and Vanguard where half of the comments were "lol is bad, who cares?" or "why no server side only anticheat?!".

I'll still quote the core part about the linux issue according to riot:

Linux does not currently afford us sufficient ability to attest boot state or kernel modules, and the difficulty in securing it is only compounded by all the frustrating differences between distributions. Even allowing emulation is an exceptionally dangerous game, as many cheats could then just run on the host, manipulating or analyzing the VM in a way that would be invisible to Vanguard within it.

Half of anti-cheat is making sure the environment hasn't been tampered with, and this is extremely hard on Linux by design

It's not the first time that I read something like when it come to anticheat. We all love linux because how free and moddable it is. You can even easily change kernel on any distribution! But when it comes to anticheat that's apparently a huge issue.

Server side anticheat are basically useless against scripts and aimbots according to riot, and it will probably get worse thanks to AI. So you need both the server and the client anticheat in order to block as much cheaters as possible. Like every defense it won't be perfect (hardware cheaters will always be impossible to detect) but at least they will stop most of them.

So in the end: do you think there will be a solution for competetive games on linux? Or it will just always be impossible to have them?

Software like controller companion for Linux?

Reddit Linux_Gaming - 12. April 2024 - 15:43

Does anybody know if there is a software that allows similar control as to co stroller companion on windows?

https://store.steampowered.com/app/367670/Controller_Companion/

It makes using a controller to control a machine a breeze. Pressing start select at the same time will switch the controller between mouse mode (left analog stick moves mouse) and controller mode. You can also set shortcuts and commands to buttons while in mouse mode. It is also generally pretty smart that when you enter a full screen app it will automatically enter controller mode.

I've done some searching and I havnt found anything that will quite work like that. Just wondering if anyone has heard of something like that. I want to use Linux as a tv/game streaming box and I found controller companion was useful as it would prevent having to reach for a kb+mouse in almost all cases.

Hi everyone, I'm facing a problem with Starbound on Linux. The game never opens and is frozen on the home screen. I've already tried opening Starbound - Unstable, but it seems that it also has problems, as the mod workshop and other resources are gone. Could anyone help me get the original Starbound to run on my Linux Fedora 39? I'm looking forward to finishing the game's story mode.
