Other News about gaming on Linux
BeamNG.drive won't launch after trying to force wayland in Steam launch options. Works perfectly without SDL_VIDEODRIVER=wayland. Running the linux binary in Fedora 43.
In Steam, it says it's running, but there is no window. And when I hit stop it freezes and I have to force quit.
Launch options are:
gamemoderun SDL_VIDEODRIVER=wayland ./BinLinux/BeamNG.drive.x64 %command%Any ideas?

RX 580: Windows 11 vs Linux CachyOS – Big FPS Difference
3090 on linux
I tried switching over but the performance loss was huge… when can I realistically expect the nvidia drivers to be as good as the amd ones? Should I just sell it and get a 9070 xt instead? I’d rather not tbh. Thanks in advance!

Steam input works in overlay but not ingame
My ps4 controller connects to my pc wired and through bluetooth just fine and are recognized by the ingame overlay, big picture mode, and games that natively support ps4 controllers.
When I try to press any buttons in games that require steam input to be enabled, nothing works except for the button to open steam overlay.
It used to work in the past but I noticed it stopped working yesterday for some reason.

Free To Use Start Icons I Made!
While not necessarily a gaming Linux post, I always felt as if, doesn't matter what DE, Linux felt so strange to me, aesthetically anyway. So I decided to make a couple of Start Menu icons to maybe uplift that situation for me via this "Ultra Luxury" pack, if you will.
For stuff especially like KDE Plasma and Asus ProArt, they are trademarked designs and in no way do i want to take away from that, but rather show appreciation to those brands.
Requests and critique are always welcome. I made these icons for personal use so who knows, they might be faffy.

WoW Lost Window issue on CachyOS Gnome
Hi All,
I'm newer to Linux and have been trying to get gaming on it. I'm a big wow player and got WoW Running with Faugus pretty easily. However, after installing addons I ran into an issue where I'd launch the game, and could hear the music, but the actual game wouldn't show up on my screen. Alt tabbing would show that WoW was open, but I couldn't select it or navigate to it at all.
After a lot of tinkering, the best I could get was to open the game with the -windowed arguments and then in game convert it to windowed (fullscreen). This isn't really ideal though, and I'm trying to figure out what I can do to change it.
My research has shown a couple of options:
- Using Gamescope to create a fixed window for it.
- My concern here is I tried something that I think is similar where I forced it into a windowed screen that was the resolution of my screen in the Winecfg in Faugus, but it caused Battle.net to not launch at all. I think it was because the Wine change was applying to battle.net and not wow, and therefore caused Battle.net to crash.
- Using Proton-GE instead
- I'm kind of new here, but I think I'll try this but I'm not sure this will work.
- Use a different DE
- I'm using Gnome, and in the past I've had trouble with Gnome and Graphics card management. What I'm reading is that this lost window issue could be due to Gnome not using the nVidia 2080 I have and instead using the iGPU and it failing because of that.
I would really like to stay on Gnome if possible, but trying to see if what other options there might be and if there's any silver bullet that might help me here.
Thanks,

Mac mini clover pit
Hey guys, I’m incredibly new to Linux. I turned my 2013 Mac mini into a mint matte machine. I downloaded steam and clover pit but whenever I start the game, it doesn’t start and the game crashes before it starts. I’ve tried various proton versions but always the same result. Is it maybe a video card issue or am I missing something simple? The game even states that it runs natively on Linux.

Ghost recon wildlands does not boot on arch
EDIT: It was a issue with firejail. When i completely disabled firejail it booted
- Im on arch and running a AMD gpu & cpu
- I installed the hardened kernel (if that affects this)
- catting the version file for this game returns this "10.1000-200"
- I used ext4 for my partitions
- Im also running firejail and apparmor but the game does not boot with --noprofile so it should not affect this and also other games like marvel rivals work fine
Looking at other sites related to protonDB and ghost recond wildlands it apparently used to work but a recent patch broke this. Would this be correct?

Is BG3 single threaded? Low FPS issues.
5600x3d+3070ti - I have a single core pinned at 100%, but my overall CPU usage is 30% and my GPU is at 40%. Is this just the games design or a setting I might need to mess with?

My controller does not want to play!!
My controller is a Turtle beach REMATCH Core, TBC-2001-95. When i plugged it in to my Linux Mint PC, the controller vibrated, but the light above the XBox button will not light up. I tried plugging it into different USB ports, no luck. I tried all the steps in the following guide, but no progress at all:
https://www.siberoloji.com/how-to-set-up-gaming-controllers-with-cinnamon-desktop-on-linux-mint/
This is what I get when I run the utility mentioned in the guide:
The guide didn't mention having to reboot the PC. Any ideas?

NVIDIA on Linux?
I really want to move away from Windows and considered switching to AMD for an upgrade since it works well with Linux but did more research and seems like a 5070Ti/5080 is a far better purchase, especially since I use an LG C5 as my main monitor that only has HDMI 2.1.
Was curious how Nvidia performs on Linux and if the switch is still viable.

Is the Cyberpunk 2077 Mod Manager worth using? Does it work on Linux (I use Bazzite)?
https://www.nexusmods.com/cyberpunk2077/mods/96 I want to download mods for Cyberpunk 2077 but want to have a mod manager for peace of mind (particularly with it helping automatically sort with a load order). From my understanding, generally, the best mod manager for games are their dedicated ones. Would this mod manager be good to use?
I'm also curious if this mod manager would work on Linux, as I use Bazzite (an offshoot of Fedora. It's akin to the Steam Deck's OS).

Help with Bloodstained: Ritual of the Night on Proton!
Recently I got the urge to go back to this game, and I've had a heck of a time trying to get it working. At first I was getting an error about DX11 needing to be at level 10.0 to use the engine, then I figured out I could force proton 5.0 to get it to say "Fatal Error" instead. Finally, I can launch the game if I use `PROTON_USE_WINED3D=1 %command` in launch options, but it looks like this no matter what Proton version I use. Anyone here had any luck with this game? My GPU is an AMD RX 6700 XT and I am running on Arch Linux.

My experience switching to Linux as a long time Windows user
I want to make a post about my experience switching to Linux as a previous long-term Windows user, to both praise the incredible effort of the Linux community, and so that I have something I can refer to if someone is unsure about the process. This is long, so skip to the end if you want a TLDR.
I've used Windows since 3.11. My gaming journey on PC only really began with Windows 95, however. I remember playing Diablo 2, Starcraft, Total Annihilation, Half-Life and Unreal. Back then installing a graphics card, or even getting peripherals (controllers, joysticks or even printers) to work properly was an ordeal unto itself. That was before USB. Back then we had serial ports. Installation for drivers (or all software for that matter) came on Floppys or CDs. The internet was brand new, and with the speeds on dial-up (~6 kB/s on a 56k modem), you weren't ever going to download bigger software packages. 16 MB RAM was a lot, but you needed that for your sick Pentium 2 with 300 MHz. You also needed to upgrade your hardware every year, because things were advancing fast.
Why am I saying all that? Because I remember the evolution of software, having lived it, I expected to take a step back into the past when switching to Linux. Everything I had read of and heard about (although admittedly, I never seriously pursued the topic) led me to believe that Linux was functional if you knew what you were doing, but janky and liable to break. Games could work, if they were older, or with some patience and fiddling on your end. Because you were essentially emulating a Windows environment, you should expect noticeable performance hits regardless.
In December 2024 I had finally had enough of Microsoft, and I decided to risk all of that with a full, cold switch to Linux, full time. At the beginning of my winter break I built a brand new system and didn't order a Windows license. I expected to spend most of my break getting Linux set up, becoming familiar with the OS and installing my peripherals. I wasn't planning on doing any serious gaming, except perhaps to see if it could work in theory.
I spent a lot of time researching the different Linux versions - because I needed something with a fast update cycle for my new hardware - and finally landed on openSuse as a compromise between cutting edge and ease of use. Installation via GUI was simple and quick, although I had some issues with drive formatting and partitioning, due to my inexperience. I did spend the rest of that evening learning how to get my second drive to automatically mount, but at the end of the day I had fully working, up-to-date version of openSuse Tumbleweed running on my computer.
I expected the next day to be painful slog, fighting to get peripherals properly installed and somehow changing the LED settings on both keyboard and motherboard. Five minutes of googling led me to OpenRGB, which was immediately capable to controlling all relevant LEDs. The gamepad was plug and play. Brother provided a Linux driver for my printer, which could be installed via script. And most surprisingly for me, my wireless USB headset was equally plug and play, allowing easy switching via the volume control. At this point I was beginning to realize that my preconceptions were completely wrong.
I have now used Linux for nearly a year. New games have worked flawlessly. The proton compatibility layer, and WINE as well, have just been... easy to use. If some game does not work, it's usually a question of switching proton versions. Valve has really pushed ease of use, and it has clearly paid off with the steam deck. The only games that don't seem to work are those that require kernel level anti-cheat. I want to stress again, I have literally not run into a single game that does not work (though I usually don't play multiplayer games). I can't speak to performance changes, since my new hardware is significantly more powerful, and I also upgraded resolution from 1080p to 1440p. I have not had poor gaming performance, however.
That said, it is not perfect. Scanning a file as pdf with the printer gives you an image file, with no text selectable. That also increases the file size footprint. It's annoying, but not insurmountable. As with most things, there are likely workarounds I am not aware of. Due to the fast update cycle, bugs are sometimes introduced. The latest one moved desktop symbols from my main monitor to my secondary monitor after each reboot (KDE Plasma desktop). That has since been fixed. Steam wants to recompile shaders for games constantly. You can just turn that off without noticeable repercussions, but you have to know about it in the first place. All of these issues have one thing in common: they are relatively minor. Worth mentioning, but not obsessing over. These are, I now believe, the issues you are warned about when switching. And I think the tone I often hear when referring to Linux ("Linux is great, most things just work, BUT...") vastly overempathizes these warnings. Because Windows has issues too.
I am extremely happy with my switch to Linux. It is a far cry from the jank I expected when I first began this journey one year ago. Today I installed Tumbleweed on my new laptop, and then connected a PS4 controller via Bluetooth. My history with computing informs me that this task is nontrivial, requiring specific, working drivers for both the bluetooth device and the PS4 controller. I didn't need to take any extra actions to make it work, and that's pretty fucking cool.
TLDR: Old man switches to Linux, is geriatrically surprised. Linux gaming is in an amazing spot. Ease of use is incredible. I expected lots of issues that never materialized. Instead of a lengthy acclimatization period, was fully up and running the next day. Never switching back to Windows. fastfetch of system

Desktop shortcuts not working for External drives?
I have an external drive. Ext4 format and automounts. Shows up in steam storage options. I can install to and play games from it with no issues what so ever. The only holdup is no desktop icons. I can go to the drive and make a link from the exe file in the game folder and it works but doesn't have the game icon. Right clicking in steam library and making a desktop icon does nothing. It's not a huge deal but does anybody know how to get this working? This is the only part of the whole process I can't find any information online for.
Edit: Using Kubuntu 24.04 so KDE. Creating desktop icons happens automatically for games installed on main drive and the add shortcut from steam library works for them.
