Questions before switching to Linux

Reddit Linux_Gaming - 19. Juni 2025 - 07:50
Hey guys, so I use Atlas OS (Windows) and I want to change to Bazzeti. I've never used Linux, so I have some questions. - Is it possible to install AMD drivers? For example, for Ryzen 7 5700G. - Do you think it's possible to play FiveM? - Is there any compatibility problem with Adobe programs? If you can answer these questions, I'd be grateful. I saw in some videos that it's much lighter for games and I wanted to try it, because I also think the Linux interface is prettier. submitted by /u/jotinhaRDK

Significantly larger performance gap between Proton and Windows after upgrading to the 50-series

Reddit Linux_Gaming - 19. Juni 2025 - 05:53

I’ve been gaming on Linux for just under a year now, and with my RTX 3080 Ti, the performance difference between Proton and native Windows was usually minimal... maybe around 10% in demanding titles like Cyberpunk. In some cases Linux even had smoother frame pacing.

However, after upgrading to the RTX 5080 yesterday, I’ve noticed a much bigger performance delta. In several games, I’m seeing a 30–40% higher FPS on Windows compared to Linux (both on the latest NVIDIA drivers, identical hardware because I'm dual booting).

I’ve already tried:

  • Reinstalling the NVIDIA drivers
  • Rebuilding kernel modules via DKMS
  • Clearing shader pre-caches

On Linux, GPU utilization hovers around 80–90% and power draw tops out around 300W. On Windows, utilization hits a consistent 99% and power draw can reach 360W+ in the same scenes (e.g., in Cyberpunk maxed-out).

Has anyone else experienced similar issues with the 50-series cards on Linux? Curious if it’s just early driver maturity for the 50-series on Linux or something else causing this.

I get disk write error whenever I try to update the game Dead By Daylight on steam.

Reddit Linux_Gaming - 19. Juni 2025 - 03:59

I tried most of the common fixes for this such as: Deleting the download cache, Moving the game to another drive, Changing download region, Deleting Compdata folder, Verifying the filies

The only solution that works is re-downloading the game. I think it's a permission issue? But I don't how to tackle the problem.

Any way to run wineserver --kill on application exit?

Reddit Linux_Gaming - 19. Juni 2025 - 02:38

I have been playing around whit wine to see if i can get wine to run wineserver --kill after i exit elona, the program just exit yet keeps running on background (doesn't take a grain of perfomance but still). I tried whit a couple of scripts but nope, trying to tell a script to run anything past wine elona.exe is useless as the program has to be closed whit CTRL+Z on terminal and still it keeps running on background, so the next command doesn't have any way to run as the program never stopped.

I tried whit wineserver --wait and then --kill but again it will wait for an eternity since it will never close anyway.

Guys I need help, honestly !

Reddit Linux_Gaming - 19. Juni 2025 - 00:52

Okay so I am a windows 11 daily driver but the thing is my laptop battery runs out of time in 3 hrs, and I'm fed up off bloatware and ads on this thing. So finally I am going to change my OS but the thing is what distro of Linux would be good for me ? for instance I'm going to college this year so I wanna have something which is coder friendly, compatible with steam and games and for regular daily driver use. So like evryone else I tried to look up for distros and oh boy... its idk how to say too much complex for my teeny tiny brain so please recommend a distro which is beginner friendly and will be helpful for both coding and gaming

Mint on a newer hardware, all AMD setup

Reddit Linux_Gaming - 19. Juni 2025 - 00:49

Hi everyone,i make this post to ask some questions regarding my specific setup,i already posted it on the Mint subreddit, but thought that it wouldn't hurt to try here too since there's more members and maybe someone here knows how to configure ROCm with Mesa (that's some black magic,i swear),i am preparing to migrate for like a year now from Windows, here are my specs:

RX 6600

Ryzen 5 3600

16gb ram

1TB NVME

I know that with specs like that i can settle for any distro really...but if i would want to settle with Mint, then:

  1. Is it a good choice for gaming,i mean,i know that any distro can be good for that, but do i need to update kernel and mesa?

  2. Do i really lose something by using X11 instead of Wayland on other distros? i know that KDE has HDR,VRR and all that fancy stuff, but my monitor is as plain as it gets,60hz 1080p,doesn't even have Freesync,so...i don't really gain anything from those,i suppose?

  3. And here comes the elephant in the room...ROCm,oh boy...i don't know why this shit is so hard to install, the last time i tried i almost lost my mind and went back to Windows...is it possible to install it without going through some dependency hell and what not?

I think that's all the questions for now, thank you and i hope i explained it as best as i could (not a native speaker).

If you have a Ubisoft account and want Linux support for Siege X, please upvote my post on r6fix for visibility

Reddit Linux_Gaming - 19. Juni 2025 - 00:03

Ubisoft said last year that they want to bring Siege to more platforms, and since then zero platforms have been added. However now with the release of Siege X and a few big developments I think this a good time to bring this topic back.

Just 8 upvotes as of writing this would help keep my post up. Thanks :)

[Help] Installing Tale of Two Wastelands (Gnarly Repack) on Steam Deck

Reddit Linux_Gaming - 18. Juni 2025 - 23:58

Hi, I read another post where someone got the Gnarly repack installed on the Steam Deck, but MO2 couldn’t detect the game files and they couldn’t run it. I’m trying the same and hitting the same issue. Has anyone actually managed to get it working properly on the Deck? Any tips?

Aerox 9 side buttons in Linux

Reddit Linux_Gaming - 18. Juni 2025 - 22:52

Hello! As someone that is considering in the near future be able to migrate from Windows to Linux.

Wanted to ask if there are other mouse than the Razer Naga that I can make work the 12 side buttons without an issue?

I play a lot World of Warcraft and those buttons are quite handy. I currently have an Aerox 9, but not even sure if the side buttons would work well if I move to Linux.

Please help!

Steam Game Recording

Reddit Linux_Gaming - 18. Juni 2025 - 22:14

Hello,

I'm having a weird issue where using Game Recording to snapshot the last 30 seconds of a clip and saving it to /home/user/Videos is not working.

What it does from what I've seen is:

It creates a bunch of .m4s inside a folder `bg_269210_20250618_200321`, which is timestamped to where I actually hit the hotkey for recording.

Looking at Steam settings for Game Recording:
The folder is marked `run/user/1000/doc/xxxxxxx/Videos`.

I'm using Fedora 42, Steam Flatpak.

What could be the issue? Ideally it would output just a single .h265 file. Anyone can help?

Just switched to Manjaro, feeling very frustrated with Overwatch 2 issues

Reddit Linux_Gaming - 18. Juni 2025 - 21:58

Just switched from Windows to Linux (Manjaro) because of impending death of Windows 10. On the exact same hardware I was able to play Overwatch just fine. Now it is virtually unplayable. I have been met with constant stuttering, maxed out CPU, and crashing due to memory failure. I'm just looking for help because this is all very frustrating. I bet I could help alleviate the memory issue by adding a swap file, but it is still bizarre that it's taking MORE memory on Linux than on Windows.

I'm running Overwatch through Steam which I got from flatpak (because someone on a forum somewhere said doing so reduces the issues). I've looked on the ProtonDB forum for Overwatch but people with my same issue provide no resolution, or their resolution has been ineffective, or I don't understand their resolution.

Specs (from inxi -Fza)

  • Kernel: 6.12.28-1-MANJARO
  • Motherboard: ASRock Z270 Pro4
  • CPU: Intel Core i5-7500
  • Device-1: NVIDIA GP104 [GeForce GTX 1070]
  • Memory total: 16G

Please help with some advice. I don't know how to do a lot of stuff on Linux. If I can't fix this issue then I'll just go back to Windows because my experience with Linux has been way worse than I had imagined.

Can I afk in games?

Reddit Linux_Gaming - 18. Juni 2025 - 21:50

I've done a decent amount of trial and error and some research and I can't seem to find a program that does the same thing as AutoHotkey or TinyTask. I mainly want it so I can afk different roblox games but I've had a lot of trouble finding anything that works.
