Anyone had any luck with a Lenovo LOQ?

26 Apr 2024 - 5:33pm

Hello everyone! I recently got a Lenovo LOQ PE0C1946, with a i5 12450H and RTX 3050 6GB.

I've longed dreamed of migrating as much as I can to Linux, albeit there's still some limits to that. And now, with this machine, I wonder how well I could do that.

Anyone having any luck with the LOQ series? Any issues? How well does the RTX 3050 performs on Wayland nowadays? What you guys do to substitute the built-in windows app that controls power schemes and fans intensity?

Why do some say that playing on Linux is complicated?

26 Apr 2024 - 4:57pm

Is it true that on Linux it is not enough to click on a program to launch it? How does it work then? Is it also true that we can't play in full screen?

Red Dead Redemption 2 Without Launcher

26 Apr 2024 - 4:50pm

Does anyone know a way to get RDR2 from the Epic store to run (preferably in Heroic launcher) without needing to install the Rockstar Launcher?

I only want to play single player and don't want that malware on my system.

How much impact does changing the Windows version in winecfg for a prefix have on a Steam game?

26 Apr 2024 - 3:41pm

Long story short, I installed CoD:WaW recently and have been using the latest GE-Proton to run it. Aside from running rather stellar, I did have an issue where while my FPS was a stable 144, the mouse movement felt jittery and resembled gameplay as if it was a lower framerate. I thought at first it could be the infamous polling rate issue wine has, but reducing the polling rate on my mouse didn't seem to fix it.

I decided to see what I could do in the winecfg for the prefix, so I opened it with proton-tricks. I changed the Windows version from 10 to 7, thinking maybe it would help. As it turned it, it seems like it did, and my mouse movement seems to be a ton smoother than before.

For shits n gigs, I also tried changing the Windows version for Hitman WoA (also using GE-Proton) from 10 to 11. Call me nuts, but I swear the DLSS I have on is now more crisp, and the input latency has decreased.

So what I want to know is, just how much of an impact does changing the Windows version in winecfg usually have, if any? Does it matter or did I end up placeboing myself? I wonder this because I rarely see it ever being brought up, so I never really cared until now.

When I add a .exe file as a non-Steam game, where does the Wine prefix go?

26 Apr 2024 - 3:20pm

I added a .exe file as a non-Steam game and now I want to get a save file from that game, but I have no idea where the Wine prefix is supposed to be at. Any help?

EDIT: I ran the game, got the PID of it using any task manager, then did

bash cat /proc/INSERTYOUROWNPIDHERE/environ | tr '\0' '\n' | grep WINEPREFIX
to get the wine prefix out of the environment variables the running process of the game has set. Should be a folder in the default Steam installation folder, $XDG_DATA_HOME/Steam/steamapps/compatdata

Need a bit of help for a first build

26 Apr 2024 - 2:06pm

Hi there!

So I'm trying to build my first gaming pc which will run on linux, so I have a few questions. First things first, here is the thing : https://www.materiel.net/s/3WCGJ2J (I'm sorry it's in french, but I think you got it, alimentation: power supply, mémoire vive : ram)

I don't want a top state of the art computer, I just want something that will run games such as path of exile or borderlands 3 in medium at 60fps 1080p. No ray tracing, no 144hz or things like that, I want something simple. The second thing is that I would like to ensure everything works nicely with linux. I didn't had any issue in the past with an Nvidia/intel laptop so it would be nice to have the same.

So first question: is everything linux compatible ? I mean would it work out of the box with, let's say a fresh Ubuntu studio installation?

Second : is everything compatible? I read a bunch of guide but I'm not sure everything fit is the small case (and I would like a small case for reasons). Is the power supply enough ? And would the temp be ok ?

Third: did I forgot anything ? Like a network card or some cables ?

Lastly, I am open to any suggestions! Please tell me if I can reduce the cost a bit.

Thanks in advance!

Wayland. Am I missing something?

26 Apr 2024 - 12:29pm

I know this isn't really gaming related as a whole, but I figured it would fit, because it has affected my gaming experience.

Okay, for a little context, my GPU is an RX6600 (not the XT version, the regular version) and I'm currently running openSUSE TW KDE 6 (but I have had issues on every distro I've tried)

now openSUSE TW KDE 6 (and MANY other distros) allows you to select either X11 or Wayland every time you log into your system. For the longest time, I've been using Wayland, because I've heard that it's essentially the default for AMD and that it's what most AMD GPU users should be using.

So I don't know if I'm just a statistical outlier, unlucky, or what, but Wayland has always given me more issues than X11 ever has. Don't get me wrong, X11 has issues (one of which I can point to is that on my specific distro, the lock screen appears completely black on a specific default KDE 6 theme, but there's workarounds, and this is a known bug, and I also take a lot of screenshots for various purposes, and I've noticed that on X11 the screenshot notification window sometimes incorrectly shows in the middle of the screen, rather than in the bottom right where it belongs)

But Wayland seemingly has way more pressing issues, specially with gaming. There's a lot of stuff I've encountered over the months, and I apologize that I can't remember and list them, but this latest issue is the straw that broke the camel's back, and made me switch to X11 for the foreseeable future.

So, as some of you may know, Dead Island 2 recently released on Steam, so I picked it up. Honestly, I've been having a LOT of fun with it, but that's besides the point. When I first booted it up, I was using Wayland. I knew that I would have to tweak the graphics a bit, since I don't quite meet the recommend requirements. I start EVERY game on ultra settings, and then lower as needed. On all games, I play at 1080p (though I do often use FSR upscaling) and on almost all games, I aim for 60FPS and only ever aim for higher frame rates on games where I can EASILY do so. Basically, if I can run a game at either a solid 60FPS, or a frame rate that constantly fluctuates between 60FPS and 144FPS (which is where my monitor caps out at) I'm going to run the game at a capped 60 nine times out of ten.

Anyways, when I first launched Dead Island 2, the first thing I noticed is that mangoHUD was acting...weird. like it wasn't showing me accurate readouts, and the hud was flickering wildly. So I turned the hud off and said to myself "fine, I'll just eyeball it or use Steam's FPS monitor." The game actually started out running fine, but I noticed that over the course of a few minutes of gameplay, the frame rate got lower and lower, which I have NEVER seen happen in a game before (that I can remember)

So after a lot of tweaking and stumbling around trying to figure out what the cause was, I remembered that I could try the game on X11. I didn't think this would work, and I tried this as a last-ditch effort before giving up and just running the game on Windows.

Well, lo and behold, guess what? When I launched it with X11, the first thing I noticed is that mangoHUD was now no longer flickering, and it was displaying accurate information. Then, when I got into the game, a solid 60FPS (at first, which I admittedly had to eventually lower to high settings which I fully expected I would have to do) but on high settings with TRUE 1080p (NO upscaling whatsoever), the game never falls below 60FPS when running through X11, and I've been playing the game for nearly 10 hours now.

Honestly, I wouldn't have even made this post if I didn't see a lot of people pushing Wayland so hard. I've literally even heard things (only rumours, admittedly) about certain distros considering dropping X11 support entirely? That seems like a bad idea to me, especially considering Wayland doesn't work (or at least only BARELY works) on Nvidia cards.

I know I only gave one example as to why Wayland is "bad" (I'm really not trying to call it bad, by the way, I'm just saying it'snot ready to fully replace X11 yet, but I fully suspect that it will be ready one day, but NOT YET.) but I promise you that I've had a lot of other problems with it in the past. I'm just bad at specifically recalling and listing them.

Anyways, I made this post just because I want to know if I'm alone or not. Am I just the unluckiest person in the world when it comes to Wayland, or have other people had these types of experiences? Anybody else sharing their stories about this would be much appreciated.

Thank you so much for taking the time to read all of this.

Game freezes when doing a bit intense work

26 Apr 2024 - 12:26pm

l play an open world game where you can teleport from one location to another. Basically whenever I teleport around or under the water which causes my game to load both underwater and surface graphics, my game freezes. I can hear the character move and blindly move through settings however its just the screen that freezes. I then have to swim till i reach a land area move a bit far and then restart the game to finally get it fixed ig. It used to work fine on windows and even on linux till yesterday. The only thing that I can remember that i did yesterday was that i closed openGl that was running when the game was running just to see what might happen and uhh here am I. I reinstalled dxvk-async-bin, wine, and more (not the game till now) but i still can't seem to get it to load properly. Did i mess up my open gl or smt and if yes is there a way i can fix it?

[Guide] Installing gpu-screen-recorder on Ubuntu/Linux Mint (NVidivia Shadowplay equivalent)

26 Apr 2024 - 11:50am

I was looking for a gameplay recorder on Linux. On windows I was using NVidia Shadowplay, and I found gpu-screen-recorder.

This guide is made for NVidia users. For AMD/Intel users, you'll need to install one or 2 more libs that are listed here.

Here is some info:

This is a screen recorder that has minimal impact on system performance by recording your monitor using the GPU only, similar to shadowplay on windows. This is the fastest screen recording tool for Linux.

There is a Flatpak package, but I wanted a cleaner way to use it using sources. And because there is no easy guide to install it, I decided to write one.

First let's install g++ and the compilation tools:

sudo apt install build-essential

Next, we need to install all dependencies:

sudo apt install libdrm-dev libavcodec-dev libavformat-dev libx11-dev libxcomposite-dev libxdamage-dev libxrender-dev libxrandr-dev libpulse-dev libva-dev libcap-dev libavfilter-dev

Then, we'll clone the repository

git clone https://repo.dec05eba.com/gpu-screen-recorder

We move in the downloaded folder:

cd gpu-screen-recorder

and start the compilation:

cd gpu-screen-recorder

After few seconds, this message appears:

Successfully built gpu-screen-recorder
Successfully installed gpu-screen-recorder

gpu-screen-recorder is ready to use. Start recording with:

gpu-screen-recorder -w screen -f 60 -o ~/Videos/"video_$(date +"%F %T")".mp4

To stop recording, just kill the process in your terminal (Ctrl + c)

Known issues: On some distro and games, in-game vsync will be lost when recording. This doesn't affect the output video. Vsync will work again as soon as you stop the recording. I filled a bug here, but it seems it's more a driver/composing issue.

Any question let me know in comments

Unable to install Waydroid / python-gbinder & libgbinder fail to install on Arch Linux with zen kernel.

26 Apr 2024 - 11:31am

I am attempting to install to install Waydroid, however anything I attempt to do so fails. I have tried multiple solutions that I have found online, but none of them have worked.

I had managed to install both of these dependencies, as well as Waydroid, however trying to launch it didn't work, giving errors of missing files. Attempting to reinstall the dependencies brought me back to step 1 of none of them working.

I am using EndeavourOS with Linux-zen kernel as recommended on the Waydroid wiki page.

This is the output upon attempting to install it: https://pastebin.com/j3YMvnPL

Question about VRR

26 Apr 2024 - 10:54am

I'm looking for a monitor upgrade, mostly for gaming. I've currently settled on ASUS ProArt PA348CGV.

I've checked this monitor's manual and it says this:

https://preview.redd.it/8yeu9pou9swc1.png?width=429&format=png&auto=webp&s=b44a3b1290cbc3e6e94acd8b9b8f7333ac079da8

So will I be able to use 120Hz VRR in KDE Plasma 5.27 on Wayland if I connect the monitor with displayport cable or will I be able to only use 100 Hz? I have a Navi 24 AMD GPU and using the opensource amdgpu driver.

Back up your saves before updating to the new Fo4!

26 Apr 2024 - 10:39am

I had decided to start a new game anyway on the latest "next gen" update, but just now I decided to try and load an older save to test something and they were all gone! Luckily I saved my most important collecting save a few weeks back so it is not a complete loss, but don't risk it and backup!

Looking a little more into it my saves still appear to be on the steam cloud so I am going to try and manually download them, fingers crossed.
