Performance issues with Steam games until i launch a none Steam game?

Reddit Linux_Gaming - 2 hours 19 sec ago

I've got a bit of a strange issue the past few days. All my Steam games suffer from really choppy performance upon initial boot. Mangohud displays 0fps and frametimes flickering between 3.7ms and 29.8ms. However, if I boot a game through Heroic and then go back to a Steam game it runs perfectly. Any idea what the hell is going on here? Also this only seems to happen with Wayland. X11 everything works fine straight away.

I'm using a 5700XT with Mesa 24.0.3.

Having issues trying to un-cap my FPS in Fallout 76.

Reddit Linux_Gaming - 2 hours 24 min ago

Hello! Thought I'd make a post about this since I haven't been able to find much online about it. My specs will be towards the bottom of the post!

Recently made the swap to linux. I picked up Fallout 76 on steam, And it's been running great through Proton. But my issue with it is that even though there is a way to un-cap the fps limit. I can't seem to figure out how. I've messed around with the game config files trying to turn vsync off and the such. And went through a few settings under the nvidia settings window but it doesn't seem like it will go above 60 fps. And adding onto this, My monitor does support 144hz. Any help is very much appreciated!

[My specs]

Ubuntu 22.04.4 LTS

CPU - Ryzen 5 5600

GPU - RTX 3060 12GB

RAM - 16GB

If I need to add anything else please do let me know, I'm still very new to linux so I'm kinda learning as I go.

Red Dead Redemption 2 not working

Reddit Linux_Gaming - 3 hours 56 min ago

Hello,

Sorry if this is silly question. I have recently switched from windows to Ubuntu 24.04 and I am trying to play RDR2 on this system through steam. System Information is as following :

  • Operating System : Ubuntu 24.04
  • Kernel Version : Linux 6.8.0-31-generic
  • CPU : AMD Ryzen™ 7 6800H
  • GPU : NVIDIA GeForce RTX™ 3060 Laptop GPU
  • Driver : NVIDIA 535.171.04

I am trying to run it through Proton Experimental and I have tried to follow steps given in protondb sites. The issue I am facing is that rockstar game launcher will keep loading and after some time it will say another instance of Red Dead Online is already running and then it will close.

Any idea how to fix this ? Please let me know if it is right subreddit for this or where should I ask about it.

Does Windows stutter more than Linux?

Reddit Linux_Gaming - 6 hours 26 min ago

Was watching this comparison video between Windows and Linux. Windows is generating a lot more FPS than Linux, but it looks to me like it's stuttering more a lot more too. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Pyyw2OhHODY

Maybe this was just a weird fluke?

Zero audio from ANY game from Steam

Reddit Linux_Gaming - 8 hours 5 min ago

Running Ubuntu 22.04 LTS

Hardware

- Ryzen 7 5800X

- NVidea 2070 Super

- Gigabyte AX370 Mobo

- 32GB DDR4 @ 3200

I am new to this, I am trying to make the transition from Windows to Linux/Ubuntu

So, I have have been scouring threads online trying to solve this issue before creating a new one. I have tried a few things with .asoundrc and asound.conf to no avail. Audio works in general. I can open up Firefox, go to YouTube, and it works. I open up PulseAudio Volume Control, there isn't even a stream for the game I am trying to open.

Weird things that may be indirectly causing issues:
- I have my games loaded onto a pair of striped BTRFS disk in Raid0, I would like to keep this for speed since they are hard disk, and to not have to re-redownload 1.2TB of games, but will do what I must.
- Steam will not recognize these drives unless I run it as root. ```sudo steam``` does not work, I must do ```sudo su``` then ```steam```.

- Primarily running with Proton Experimental, but no luck with Proton 8.0 either. Both of those are on the main disk in ```/```, so are Steam Linux Runtime 3.0 (sniper) and the Steamworks Common Redistributables.

Any help is appreciated, thank you for your time.

Trying to play Infection Free Zone

Reddit Linux_Gaming - 8 hours 16 min ago

Has anyone else managed to get Infection Free Zone to run? It installs for me just fine but when I try to launch the game in Steam I get an error about needing DirectX 11. I have other games that need DirectX 11 that run just fine. Any ideas?

Marking my progress

Reddit Linux_Gaming - 9 hours 20 min ago

day 1-2

i've decided to go with ubuntu 24.04 after dealing with issues with fedora 40 kde. plasma was not playing well with my nvidia gpu. graphical interfaces were glitching/disappearing. if not for that i wouldve stayed on fedora. ubuntu seemed to be the next logical choice for someone new who doesnt want a stock/windows like experience. while i have tried linux distros in the past this is my first time sticking to it when issues arise. my gaming performance is slightly less then in windows in some games but not noticeably bad , at least not in the games that work. duke nukem 3d megaton edition for example, would not launch correctly in its native linux port. i switched to a exe through proton 8, where after moving 2 feet in game all textures that i couldnt see in the first frames/ the ones out of my spawn sight where blacked out. Then the game crashed. also couldnt get bo2 multiplayer to launch . proton said bo2 was good to go but it was a no go for me regardless of what proton i used.

my specs for reference

r5 5500 , rtx 4060 , 32 gb ddr4 @ 3200 , 1tb nvme ssd(for os) , 1tb sats ssd(for games )

i recently got minecraft working with open jdk 21 , which i downloaded multi snaps with that name/ something adjacent to it and none of them worked. or atleast i couldnt figure it out.

any ideas for what i should do in situations where games just dont work with proton ? is there anyway to force them to work or should i give up on them? why didnt the linux native version work? both duke and dead island 1 native refused to work

Steam will not add second drive (Bazzite 3.0)

Reddit Linux_Gaming - 11 hours 32 min ago

Hi, I am at my wits end trying to add a second SteamLibrary on a secondary drive. It simply will not and am looking for help. I have followed the official guide to mount my drive and configure fstab (https://universal-blue.discourse.group/docs?topic=561). I have set 777 permission on all the folders in the secondary drive. I have tried to mount both btrfs and ext4, no dice. It is not a flatpak either. Any help appreciated!.

[Bully] Can't set language to spanish

Reddit Linux_Gaming - 11 hours 33 min ago

Greetings, this is my machine:

Linux Mint 21.3 XFCE

The system is in spanish, installed steam (native, but flatpak aslo has the same problem) that is also configured in spanish:

Latinamerican spanish, but also in Spain spanish happens the same

I know I have to install protontricks to install a couple of components to make the audio work right in Bully, but anyway:

When I try to run the game it starts in english even though I selected spanish before in the game properties:

https://preview.redd.it/qtvz7itwrwwc1.png?width=958&format=png&auto=webp&s=06100770ea1104bc7bbe1b0a2bdfe815b25af1bd

I know the game has spanish support as I can play it in spanish using Windows.

And I know I still have to install a couple of things through Protontricks, but the language stays in english no matter what.

Is there any way to force through steam, wine, winetricks or protontricks the spanish language?

Even on my Linux Mint Cinnamon Desktop the game runs in spanish, I don't know what I'm doing wrong or if there's something I have to change.

Edit: The game runs smooth and looks great, I can install the silentpatch and the widescreen fix with no problem, but I would feel more confortable if I could set the language to spanish.

Any ideas?

Nvidia, and keeping a little perspective...

Reddit Linux_Gaming - 12 hours 26 min ago

I switched back to Windows until the explicit sync thing is up and running. Quite quickly Chrome started randomly going black except for the webpage if I open the start menu, and trying to change settings in the Control Panel makes it freak out and have to be closed from the task manager. On this laptop (ThinkPad P50) the experience is actually best with X11 and Nvidia lol!
