Flickering when in 120hz

27. Mai 2025 - 13:00

I have a razer laptop:

  • SYSTEM Blade 16 - RZ09-0483 (9.04)
  • 13th Gen Intel(R) Core(TM) i9-13950HX (32) @ 5.50 GHz
  • GeForce RTX 4090 Laptop GPU
  • Raptor Lake-S UHD Graphics
  • 3840x2400 @ 120Hz
  • lib32-nvidia-utils 570.153.02-1
  • nvidia-hook 1.5.2-1
  • nvidia-inst 25.5-1
  • nvidia-open 570.153.02-2
  • nvidia-prime 1.0-5
  • nvidia-utils 570.153.02-1

I experience the same issues when using the proprietary drivers.

But when I start gaming, I get flickering. I switched to 60Hz, and it is fine. Only happens when in 120Hz. Mostly when in gaming and I assume it is because there I use the nvidia card over the intel card.

Not sure where to look, googled around, tried loads of things.

Buying Nvidia in 2025

27. Mai 2025 - 12:37

Hey guys! I want to get a new graphics card for 1440p gaming. Among the options I've considered are the 5070 and 4070 Super, which should run a bit better than the 7800XT when not VRAM-bound.

Are any of you gaming on 40/50 series cards? How's the support compared to AMD we know and love? Last time I used Nvidia on Linux I had a GTX 760, and there were a few hiccups, some things like virgl weren't supported, etc. I do know Nvidia now offers another, open-source driver.

Are those equivalent choices or is AMD still the way to go for graphics under Linux? If so, why? What problems are Nvidia cards still having?

Thanks!

Support for Graphics Cards in Linux

27. Mai 2025 - 12:25

Hi there, What’s the current state of AMD/Radeon driver support in Linux? I’m specifically interested in Debian/Ubuntu-based systems—more precisely, KDE Neon. How does the control panel for these cards compare to the one on Windows? And are all the new technologies introduced in the latest GPUs supported in Linux (or are they expected to be)?

Should I go back to Mint? (Or any other suggestions?)

27. Mai 2025 - 11:50

I got mint a week or so ago, and yeah i had a great time. Only problem was VRR was not supported out of the box, so I went over with EndevourOS since I could use KDE Plasma 6 and it supported VRR.

This is where it gets a little tricky, I love KDE 6 and EOS, but there are 2 problems.

  • VRR never worked in the end, I would get a black screen whenever I had it enabled
  • My motherboard WiFi MediaTek chip has known latency issues, so all of a sudden my WiFi speeds got substantially worse.

So that leaves me thinking I should go back to Mint. Is it worth the hassle or any other suggestions? Also, if you have any (Non arch, since that is what causes wifi latency) other distro options, would be interested to hear.

Just released the steam demo for my detective game. Made in ubuntu and includes a linux build.

27. Mai 2025 - 08:34

In Pixel P.I. you follow Pixel, a hacker detective reviewing past police cases for clues to a bigger mystery involving herself. She hacks the police database to obtain the suspects and witnesses' statements, but these statements are encrypted using advanced quantum methods. Luckily, these statements were encrypted together with their respective questions, so you can decrypt them by guessing what questions the police asked.

Pixel P.I. is a detective game, a unique hand-crafted narrative experience with the novelty of being able to understand language to interact with text written by the player. One of the game's main features is unlocking statements by typing questions.

The game starts with Pixel waking up in her room and realizing she can't remember the last two years. There's also someone else in the room with her she doesn't recognize, a robot called Ethan who claims they were crime-solving partners. Pixel doesn't trust him, but decides it's best to keep him around to try and learn about her recent past. On that note, she finds that the last entry on her notebook is a list of police case IDs. She decides to review these cases to understand why they were relevant to her.

How do I run EA App Games?

27. Mai 2025 - 07:14

Hi, I recently installed Linux Mint and all my Steam and Epic Games are working fine except for EA App games such as Battlefront 2 (which I got through Epic Games) or Sims 4. I followed the guideline outlined in this guide in order to install the EA App on Linux using Lutris's installer and run the app using wine-ge-8-26. However, I'm having 2 main issues with it. Note that I used The Sims 4 as my guinea pig game to test all the options.

1. Unable to run the actual game itself

After I installed the game, when I double-click on the game to run it (which should've worked as per the guide), it instantly fails to launch and I get the error:

Failed to launch game. An error on our end caused the launch to fail. Try again a little later.

Since that didn't work, I tried adding the executable (TS4_x64.exe) file of the game to Lutris in order to bypass the EA App and running it with the same wine version as before. Same error.

I tried changing the game's Wine runner to Proton-Experimental, and double-clicking it in Lutris. This started up the executable and no failure to launch game error showed up, but nothing actually happened. It was kinda just stuck there.

I added the executable to Heroic Game Launcher and ran it with GE-Proton-latest, but this caused an error saying:

Origin is not installed, and is required to play your game. Please reinstall Origin.

I don't really know where to go from here, but it feels like I'm on the cusp of the answer and I'm missing something obvious.

2. Messing with the EA App's wine runner makes it permanently useless

If I change the EA App's wine runner in Lutris to Proton-Experimental, it says "connecting to EA App," loads for a bit, and then just fails to launch. The kicker, though, is that when I changed it back to wine-ge-8-26, it still failed to launch, meaning I straight up could not launch the EA App at all anymore.

I tried launching the EA App executable (EALauncher.exe) with GE-Proton-Latest from Heroic Game Launcher, but this caused the app to prompt me for an update:

Background services crashed. The background services aren't responding, so we're kicking off the update manually. Stay put while we get the app up and ready for you.

However, whenever I click update, a command prompt comes saying "App already up to date, exiting now." 😐

The only way out of this loop for me was to completely delete the EA App and all of its contents (which include the games I installed) and then reinstall it (starting over from step 3 in the guide).

If anyone could please help with these, I'd greatly appreciate it. Just tryna play some BF2 😭🙏

Advice for converting my Windows PC to a Linux PC

27. Mai 2025 - 07:04

I currently have a PC that has been running Windows 10 since I originally built it, but recently I've been wanting to switch over to Linux - to put it simply, Windows has been giving me a lot of issues, and with 10 dropping support very soon (and me REALLY not wanting to use 11 lol), I want to see about switching over to a version of Linux.

I haven't decided on a distro to use yet (but I am heavily considering SteamOS as I'm most familiar with it thanks to the Steam Deck), but I did want to ask about how I could go about running it. I know the process of booting into it via a USB and installing it that way, but I more specifically want to know about the best place to install it. My PC currently has three drives - the main 3TB HDD that Windows is installed to, a secondary 4TB HDD, and a single 1TB SSD.

The plan I'm currently considering is moving all of my important files off of my SSD and using that to install Linux. I wanted to be sure if that was a safe/viable option before I went through with it though. I am waiting a while before I go through with it, so I'm not in any rush for information on this, but any advice is appreciated!

Additionally, any good recommendations on distros other than SteamOS would also be great - I'm mainly considering SteamOS because it's one I have experience with.

Edit: Thanks for all the comments regarding the distros! I'll still keep an eye on SteamOS to see if it becomes more viable in the near future, but I'll consider Bazzite and Nobara in the meantime based on your suggestions!

Some additional info:

I mainly use my PC for 3D animation and video editing. I use Blender, which is already supported in Linux, and I've found alternatives to the video editor I currently use.

In terms of gaming, I largely play single player games. I do play multiplayer games on the rare occasion, but none of them are the kind that use anti-cheat

Specs:

CPU: Intel core i7-6700K 4GHz

GPU: Nvidia Geforce RTX 3060 Ti

Ram: DDR4 16GB (planning on upgrading to 32GB in a couple months, which is when I'll be considering the switch to Linux - might as well kill 2 birds with one stone)

Thanks in advance!

Gaming on Linux

27. Mai 2025 - 05:25

Hello guys, I'm a total beginner when it comes to gaming on Linux. Even referring to me as a noob could be seen as an insult to noobs, so I really need your assistance to help me through the process of installing the best Linux for gaming, what apps to use, and how to operate them.

My specifications are:

Ryzen 3600

Rx 5700xt Sapphire Pulse (I'm having some driver issues at the moment; it tends to crash occasionally)

3200 8*2 GB RAM 144Hz 1080p monitor
