Newbie trying to game on Linux needs help.

16. April 2024 - 20:10

I'm new to Linux, installed Ubuntu the other week and wanted to give gaming a shot today. I'm trying to get Elden Ring running but so far I'm getting stuck on the EAC Initializing screen.

Any idea of what I'm missing here?

How to run mods on RDR2?

16. April 2024 - 20:05

Hi everyone!

I was curious about testing games on Linux, so I installed Garuda on a secondary drive and wanted to test out Red Dead Redemption 2. I've managed to start the game through Lutris and it's much more stable than it is on Windows regarding the memory leak and also on Linux I get 100+ FPS which is more than I've expected since on Windows I get an average of 80 FPS.

The issue is I play the game modded and I can't find the proper way to do that on Linux because most of the instructions I find are for the Steam version, but I have the game on Epic. I tried starting the game from Heroic but got the driver update error, so I gave up and managed to get it working with Lutris somehow.

I'm looking forward to anything that might help, but I'd like to mention that I'm still (re)learning how to operate Linux since I haven't used one in almost 10 years.

Help me understand Wayland VRR and vsync

16. April 2024 - 19:19

I am currently using an RTX3080 over a Displayport 1.4 under KDE 6.0.
Inside the display settings, I can see something for adaptive sync, which is currently set to 'always'. To my understanding, this eliminates stuttering frames when the GPU drops frames under load, but when I switch over to an HDMI cable, these settings are now gone. I can't tell the difference between having these features on or off for the most part. Is it worth using a DisplayPort cable if Wayland addresses sync via both cables? The only reason I ask is because I have a very odd need to run a stupid long display cable about 50 feet and have yet to find a DP that can do this.

Trying to get controllers to work on Linux apps

16. April 2024 - 19:17

So I’m on fightcade, running through Linux on chromeOS

I’m trying to connect my Xbox one controller (through a micro usb cable) but it won’t recognize it, so I do some research and people say to try to run steam in the background, so I install steam and after a huge nightmare trying to get steam to actually work, I try to open fightcade again with steam in the background but it still won’t recognize my controller.

So I mess around with steam for a while, open settings, go to controllers and enable Xbox controller input (doesn’t do anything), then someone on the fightcade discord tells me to install “steam-devices”, so I do but for some reason installing steam-devices causes the steam launcher to uninstall, which makes it impossible to run steam while running fightcade.

I’ve looked this up but there’s extremely little information about this and idk where to go from here.

Any help with getting steam-devices to work while still being able to launch steam? I would also accept alternate solutions to getting my controller to work on fightcade. Thank you

Dash icons for Steam/Lutris games?

16. April 2024 - 19:12

Been very much enjoying the experience of gaming on Linux since I made the switch, pretty much everything has been smooth-sailing.

One thing that didn't end up working out of the box is the fact that I don't seem to have any program-specific icons in the panel (GNOME with Dash-to-Panel extension) when I'm playing games through Steam or through Lutris. Instead, it's just a white box with a cog in the middle.

Is there something specific that I need to do to get this working - I'm very surprised at least Steam has sorted this out automatically?

Linux vr gaming and tablet support?

16. April 2024 - 19:07

Hello everyone,

With windows 10 support ending on the horizon I've been looking into switching to linux (I've chosen to switch to Mint once support ends) and I've been looking into using the programs that i use now (on w10) on linux. Most of it looks like there is an easy way for it to work but others not so much.

Tablet support (wacom tablets) I have a drawing tablet that I still want to use to draw but there are no official drivers available for wacom tablets (or at least I didn't find any).

The second thing is VR support I've looked into it and it seems possible but it doesn't work for some people and you have to jump through alot of hoops.

I suspect Linux will be even better by the time im going to switch, but any ideas if it would be possible to do those things on linux when the time comes?

NSF UNDERGROUND 2 steam deck error

16. April 2024 - 17:50

Sup boys I have tried a lot but now my options are exhausted.

The other day I was like Underground 2 would be sooooo sick on my tiny little steam deck so. I downloaded the CD rom and boot it up….. welp it didn’t boot up. An error message appeared “Please insert CD Disk” over and over again. Tried to download from another site still doesn’t work. I scouted the internet and found the CD fix. Downloaded it, tried it, still doesn’t work and pull up the same message.

By coming here I hope that this one dude who tried it and actually pulled it off can tell me how to fix that skill issue. Ask me anything about how I did it and I’ll answer. Help :(

Can't get 2.1 audio working with SoundBlaster X4

16. April 2024 - 17:16

Hi all,

Been trying to get my head around this all day. I have my speakers and subwoofer connected to the 3.5mm jacks on my X4 and the audio doesn't work. I've tried endeavourOS, Garuda and nobara. It works with 2.1 in Windows and weirdly enough the sub will work when I set it to 5.1 in Linux.

I know I'm just missing a simple configuration, but I've been searching all day trying various configs and edits to the conf files in /etc/pipewire

This stupid thing is stopping me gaming and it holds me back from switching completely because I love my sound and subwoofer too much to not have it right.

Has anyone had this issue with their X4 and resolved it?

[Help] Fallout 4 Mods won't load correctly when launched using proton, but they load fine when the game is launched from (STL +) Vortex.

16. April 2024 - 16:50

I'm using steamtinkerlaunch to add Vortex to my Fallout 4 install on Steam, with GE-Proton8-25. I have STL configured to open f4se_loader.exe, which works fine as I see F4SE console and the game shows the F4SE version in the console.

Now, the problem is that it appears that there are a bunch of mods that are outright now loading when launching the game normally / through proton. But if when launching the game I click on the "Start Vortex" button on STL and launch the game from Vortex, all the mods load correctly.

Sadly I can't use that fix because when launching the game from Vortex it runs at 5FPS.

Any idea of what might be causing this?

Steamdeck beginner

16. April 2024 - 14:47

I'm wanting to get a steam deck but have no idea which model to go for. I want to have good performance but also don't want to be spending a fortune on a console. I heard you can customise the storage and everything, is this true? If so, which model would be best for me?

Unable to launch V Rising through (GE) Proton

16. April 2024 - 14:32

Steam is installed with `dnf install steam` (so it's not a flatpak).

Nvidia drivers work without issues.

I can play games that have native Linux support - for example, Blasphemous and Turok.

Logs and tech info: github gist.

I tried with Proton Experimental (various beta versions too), Proton 9.0 (Beta), Proton 8.0-5 and GE Proton 9-4 (latest atm).

V Rising can run through Proton Experimental on Steam Deck.

I had error logs about missing `libcrypto.so.1.1` and `libnvidia-pkcs11.so.550.54.15` but I solved that with sym-link/copy to the path Steam looks for it.

If there's anything else needed, let me know.

Poor performance in some games

16. April 2024 - 14:30

As the title says, I'm getting poor performance in a few games. These games in particular are Spider-Man remastered, and Miles Morales.(Dodi and fg crack)

My setup : (laptop GPU : RTX 3060 Cpu : Ryzen 7 5800H 16GB ram OS : Nobara

Added these 2 games to steam. Running using proton-experimental. Tried proton Ge.

Both games run. But the problem is, I'm getting around 30-40fps lesser than I do on windows. On windows I usually get around 90-110fps, but on linux I'm getting only around 50-60fps.

Help.

Thanks in advance.

Any game which you can't run in m$ bloatware but can run in Linux? For me, Jade empire, might & magic vii(cd), sacred 1 and far cry 2.

16. April 2024 - 14:11

Many people talk about games which cant run in linux. I wanna now the opposite, just by curiosity. Might and magic vii for blood and honor was my first rpg. I can run the gog version in m$ spyware no problem but my cds wouldn't run. Jade empire is another example. The steam version runs flawsly in linux and cant run in windows. Diablo 1 and 2 too.

In general this only happens with very old games.
