Thinking of switching from windows, need some questions answered.

22. August 2025 - 20:29

I've been interested in upgrading to Linux for quite some time now, I'll get into the important questions straight away.
1) Which version of Linux has a clean ui similar to windows in which I'm able to also game and do video editing work on for university.
2) Is there a lot of terminal work / coding involved with said Linux version (If so is it hard to learn)
3) On average how big is the performance boost when switching to Linux. (I'll provide my specs below and am free to offer any other specs that I have not mentioned).
Specs:
Intel i5-10400f
Asus Prime H410M-D
Nvidia RTX 3060ti
16GB Ram
1TB storage
2 monitors.
I'll regularly be checking back to look for any support.

Considering Changing My PC to Linux, Feedback Wanted!

22. August 2025 - 19:46

Hi all!

Currently using the latest LTR of Ubuntu on a school/work laptop, and am heavily considering swapping my primary desktop PC at home from Windows 11 to linux (probably also Ubuntu, just am familiar with it). I use my desktop primarily for gaming. Is there really anything I'd be missing as far as changing OSes? Just trying to evaluate it from all angles before making the dive.

Xbox controller behaves like one of the directional sticks is stuck

22. August 2025 - 19:39

Hi All,

I’m having an issue with my Xbox controllers where they behave like one of the directional sticks is stuck and the charter in games just spins endlessly.

I’m having this issue with two different Linux distributions and with two different Xbox controllers. One is Nobara with a USB VoYEE Xbox controller clone and the other is Bazzite with the Microsoft Wireless dongle Xbox controller.

It only happens with native Linux games. It happens if they are are installed via Flatpak, RPM or just running binaries directly from an uncompressed tarball or zip. It does not happen when running games using Proton in Steam or Lutris.

Any assistance would be appreciated.

Here’s a YouTube link showing an example if the issue.

[HELP] Wrong in-game resolution (only 3D parts)

22. August 2025 - 18:45

This is the second Windows game I try to play with this error: the game seems to run in the correct resolution (the intro videos are in the correct resolution/alignment) but as soon as I get to a menu (rendered, interactive part) the resolution is completely wrong and the image is out of screen.

Relevant information:

Game: Virtua Tennis 4 (same problem with GRID)

OS: cachyOS

WM: Hyprland

Launcher: Lutris

Runner: wine-ge-8-26-x86_64

Gamescope: disabled (nothing changes if enabled and I'm having other problems with it)

Any tips on how to fix this issue?

Doom: The Dark Ages black screens my system

22. August 2025 - 18:16

As the title says, Doom: The Dark Ages (Latest-Steam) will launch and play fine, but eventually I black screen, with no consistency as to where they die, as sometimes the game will work fine until it suddenly decides that I should no longer have fun.

The tweaks that I've tried are:
- Switching from mesa 25.1 to 25.2 (testing) and 25.3 (mesa-git)
- Switching to AMDVLK
- Proton-GE 10.12, Proton 10 beta, Proton 9
- Disabling shader pre-caching
- Reinstalling the game
- Using gamemode

Nothing works, no matter what I do the game will, sooner or later, crash my drivers and give me a black screen on both displays that are plugged in via DisplayPort.

Relevant system specs: AMD Ryzen 5 7600X, AMD Radeon RX 9070XT, Arch Linux running the Linux 6.16.1-zen1-1-zen kernel, KDE Plasma 6.4.4 Wayland, no swap partition or swap file.

If anyone can figure it out, I'll be eternally grateful. This is the only game that I've tried so far that has these issues, and it's frustrating how nothing seems to make it work.

When undervolting your GPU, how important is it to use a proper stress tester instead of just using a game?

22. August 2025 - 17:37

I'm going to be trying to undervolt my gpu using LACT. When I did it on windows using MSI afterburner I just loaded up a game and lowered the voltage little by little until it crashed. Then raised it back up and played some games to test it until it stopped crashing.

Can I just do that on LACT as well? Or should I really be using a GPU stress tester? If so, what would be a good one for Arch Linux?

Looking for a linux native co-op FPS with LAN support. Details below

22. August 2025 - 16:54

Hey all! Husband, a friend and I are looking into something co-op made in the last 5 years that has co-op 2 to 4 players.

Older games need not to be recommended since we already have stuff like L4D2, Killing Floor and all of the 90's shooters with linux support ready to roll on our rigs.

No wine recommendations please unless it's platinum and need NO work on our part to get up and running. We tried a bunch of proton stuff and ran into back to back bugs, crashes and issues.

We don't play online much so something with LAN support is ideal here.

Thanks so much for any leads :)

A game where you're BALD and looking for MILK

22. August 2025 - 15:21

Hi! I'm a nascent gamedev, and this is my first game - a ridiculous hand-drawn 2D point-and-click comedy adventure where you're BALD, your INVENTORY is your UNDERPANTS, and you're on an eternal quest to get da MILK for da COFFEE.

Always loved point & click games, in particular Sam & Max: Hit the Road and Day of the Tentacle.
Since the game was made in Unity, not too difficult to make a Mac and Linux build (I use Mac, but have a Linux VM on a Mac laptop to test).

Steam page if you're interested, demo is available, it's on PC, Mac & (obvs) Linux:
https://store.steampowered.com/app/3711090/Bru__Boegie_Episode_1__Get_da_MILK/

If you get to try the demo on Linux, would love to get your feedback please. 🙏

Apart from that, I'm an indie from South Africa trying to strike ✨the big time baby✨ lol.
Planning to make a second and third game to make the game series a trilogy, got most of the second game plotted out. Got my buds to contribute writing, voices, music and sfx, really stoked with the result.

Swap to 9070xt?

22. August 2025 - 14:19

Hello! I am wondering how the 9070xt is performing on linux and if swapping from my 4080 super and selling it for around $850-$900 and then buying the 9070xt for $700 would be a good swap.

I play in 1440p with a monitor that does 280hz, variety of games, and i almost never use RT.
