RSL-Helper for RAID: Shadow Legends?

19. April 2024 - 12:33

Hi dived into some RAID Shadow legends, the launcher (Plarium Play) works nicely via Lutris, I just don't have much luck running RSL-Helper in there (I installed it in same prefix, and changed Lutris executable to RSL-helper, but it fails silently, logs just show it started and immediately ended).

I've seen in Steam disussion one commenter mentions he is able to run RSL-Helper, but I don't see any way to contact him.

Anybody had any luck with RSL-Helper? Any tips hugely appreciated.

I tried to run fifa 21 on proton, and it was laggy...

19. April 2024 - 12:22

Game was visually laggy, audio a bit choppy, it kept throwing errors on startup about failing to connect to servers (but did download my old savegame automatically), and I got destroyed by AI in my test matches, either due to being out of practice or due to laggy controls, not sure. Already tried lowest settings, didn't actually make much of a difference.

What I wonder is, is it worth trying to fiddle with the options, or is it always going to be running poorly because my hardware is a bit dated/mediocre?

8 GB RAM DDR3

i5-4460

RX460/560D

Mint 21.3 Cinnamon

Steam says it wants "Graphics: NVIDIA GTX 660 2GB or AMD Radeon HD 7850 2GB" at mininum which apparently RX460 seems to be better than?

Spore: Creepy & Cute Parts Pack Error 1004

19. April 2024 - 11:06

I have searched for a long time online to fix the error 1004 ("Could not find a needed package. The data directory is missing or corrupt. [1004]") and i finally found a Solution.
Steam only adds the Pakcs Directory to the windows registry but does not state a path for the games Data itself.

I found the solution here:
Edit the file /home/your_user_name/.local/share/Steam/steamapps/compatdata/17390/pfx/system.reg (17440 for the pack) and search for the part:
[Software\\Wow6432Node\\electronic arts\\spore] 1713514317

If there is no data directory stated, add it like so:

"datadir"="/home/your_user_name/.local/.share/Steam/steamapps/common/Spore/Data"

If, however, the data path to the pack is missing, it is located at

[Software\\Wow6432Node\\electronic arts\\SPORE Creepy and Cute Parts Pack] 1713514317

The data directory then is ..Spore/bp1content

The error was gone and the game works flawlessly on my system by just adding the single reference to the games Data directory. Hope this will help someone in the future who searches for a fix for Spore: Creepy & Cute Parts Pack on Linux :)

I need some features to work on Linux to be able to switch, do they work ?

19. April 2024 - 10:19

Hi!

I would like to dual-boot Windows and Linux because I need Windows for work-related stuff.

I also game on Windows and I would need some features, does Linux support this?

-Safe boot with Nvidia drivers is it possible?

-Freesync monitor that runs the Gsync compatibility layer from Nvidia drivers (so freesync to Gsync)

-Do some distros already have support for this if so what distros?

Thanks!

After KDE6 migration, Steam not recognizing Xbox Elite Series 2 controller despite being detected by both OS and WINE

19. April 2024 - 10:16

I had a somewhat messy migration in Gentoo to KDE6 (many KDE/Plasma packages got uninstalled and reinstalled), but came out on top in the end. Now all of the sudden the bluetooth Xbox Elite Series 2 controller I'd been using in Steam games isn't being recognized in Steam.

  • This Xbox controller is connecting via Bluetooth correctly.
  • It is correctly witnessed in KDE system settings as /dev/input/event23 with all buttons and inputs detected, possibly also /dev/input/js0 too but can't confirm
  • It is correctly witnessed in "wine control" menu in the default [~.wine](http://~.wine) instance with all buttons and inputs detected
  • Steam->Settings->Controller shows "No controller detected" and Helldivers 2 does not detect any controller input.

I have troubleshooted the ever-living-shit out of this and I cannot make any breakthroughs on this. Things I've tried:

  • Uninstall steam and purge ~.local/share/Steam, reinstall from scratch
  • Verify xpad driver present in kernel, also tried removing it from kernel resulting in no change of any kind
  • Verified I have "games-util/game-device-udev-rules" installed (possibly an analog to "Steam-Devices") - note I've poked around the udev roles and there doesn't appear to be any steam rules or rules for xbox controllers
  • Verified "User level driver support" or "input_uinput" kernel module is activated
  • Tried media-libs/libsdl2-2.28.5, 2.28.5-r1, 2.30.2, tried but failed to go back to 2.28.1 due to dependency requirements
  • Tried media-libs/libsdl-1.2.68 and 1.2.15_p20221201
  • Tried going back from Wayland to X11, same exact issues
  • Tried reinstalling various QT6 components
  • Tried gamescope but haven't gotten it working in either X11 or Wayland (separate issue)
  • Tried looking for the direct exe file to launch from Lutris but for some reason I cannot find the exe file in the steam compatdata directory in the associated steamid to save my absolute life and I am so confused by this
  • Tried using protontricks to adjust the registry values in the Helldivers 2 proton instance to enable HIDRAW detection, enable Event interface detection, enable SDL mapping to try to coax detection by the game, no detection of controller inputs
  • Disabled "Steam Input" in Steam's game settings for Helldivers 2
  • Switched to the Steam Beta client
  • Probably some other stuff

I am at this point desperate to get this to work but facing what looks like it may be a situation where the current SDL packages in the KDE6 realm (or some kind of uinput-related package in KDE6) and Steam may just don't work with each other right now. It just makes no sense that absolutely everything except Steam itself fully detects this controller, and yet Steam won't pick this up.

Console + Linux cross-platform team games

19. April 2024 - 08:15

Hey guy, with the end of Win10 support looming I'm getting ready to switch my gaming rig over to Debian. That may also involve dropping in an RX7*00XT or similar to replace the current RTX3070. Most of the puzzle pieces are already in place, but I'm still missing an alternative to Fortnite, which is the one thing my PS4/PS5 based buddies and I can fire up together when we want to turn off our brains entirely and get our asses kicked by 12 year olds.

Are there any alternatives (ideally team-based shooters) that run on Linux without any anticheat issues? The only thing I'm coming up with is Rocket League but that's a slightly different genre ;)

Is it worth sidegrading to 7900 xtx from RTX 4080 just to avoid linux trouble?

19. April 2024 - 07:30

I want to get into Linux but I am told that nvidia is no good on linux. In your opinion, would it be worth the time and expense just for the problem free gaming experience?

Linux gaming on laptops with no fan control support on bios doesn't seems to be possible now⁉️

19. April 2024 - 06:35

I have an Acer Nitro 5 AN-515-57 i5-11400H(6 core) rtx 3050 4gb, no mux support.

So, i tried linux gaming after being a long time windows gamer, Games did work, i used nobara as my first prime/daily usage os & games do run but i faced intense heating issues fans rpm wasn't controllable like it used to with NitroSense. Then i tried various applications for linux fan controlling like fan2go, nbfc, gwe, cooler-centre & many more which people mentioned of on various platform when i did duck duck go, i don't remember all name but one thing that i noticed was that lm-sensers basically weren't detecting any of my fans & many applications that's why simply didn't worked but at the end i did find something that kinda atleast make my fans move not 6-7k rpm it just used to do but it moves but all of use know that's now sufficient for linux gaming then at the end i had to dual-boot with win10 revios & now i rarely opens linux :/ & feels like useless to even boot on linux now, It seems like i sub-consciously said linux goodby 🙃
Well, any help is highly appreciated as i still wanna try linux more may this time i will try supreme og deb(or arch maybe if i have time :)

Reduce mouse speed even more on Wayland?

19. April 2024 - 03:48

Hi al,

So I recently got a new trackball mouse that has an insanley high DPI. This makes it so sensitive that even that standard system settings to reduce its pointer speed is not enough. Is there are any other software or command line tools that can lower the pointer speed?

No Rest for the Wicked seems to work fine at launch

19. April 2024 - 03:18

Anyone who played Ori games is probably excited about new project from Moon studios and as of today No Rest for the Wicked is out on Early Access and, for now at least, seems to work fine on Linux.

I'm running it on Fedora 39 with Wayland, Ryzen 5 5600x and 7750XT GPU and getting fairly consistent 40-60 fps at 4k and Quality preset. Let's hope this lasts and support for DLSS (and probably FidelityFX) is coming soon so hopefully it's going to be even better.

Tested on default launch settings on Steam and GE-Proton-8-25. Both worked without issues so far.

LoL Remote low Input connection to local windows pc

19. April 2024 - 02:48

hey i struggle alot with using Windows as Daily Driver and recently moving everything from Windows to Linux which worked great so far but my main concern is playing the shitty L game which is now just 100% more convenient on Windows especially with the current Vanguard controversy. I read alot online about fixing this from dual system with kvm switch. Or macos vm with gpu passthrough running League. Dual Booting or Dual Booting with Windows which also doubles as A VM under Linux. Alot of funny stuff. Which one would work and doesnt break?

I have my Laptop with Windows right next to me and my pc with arch is there any low input latency remote client software capable of minimal latency? Idk if its a plausible solution to this problem

PSA: don't use the new 64-bit TF2 client

19. April 2024 - 01:44

It can crash your desktop. This bug has existed since the initial beta and Valve couldn't have bothered to fix it. Great job Valve.

At least they didn't steal a game from people's libraries and replace it with an inferior version they have no plans on fixing this time.

I am confused why people keep saying Linux gaming is as good or even better than Windows gaming

19. April 2024 - 01:21
Introduction

I've been using Linux for the last seven years. Gaming was barely a thing but Valve started pushing Linux gaming and now it's somehow usable, but nowhere close to Windows standards.

I keep seeing people claiming that Linux gaming is just as good as Windows gaming or even better! A youtuber even attacked me for saying how my experience was not that good at all. I am genuinely confused at this point. I've looked at Linux vs Windows game benchmarks and wow! Some times even better? Some times a bit worse or equal. Some other times games wouldn't start at all according to them, especially with ray tracing, or the enhanced edition of Metro Exodus.

Now, what confuses me is how can they get those high FPS while i get little on most AAA games? For instance, i played Monster Hunter World on Windows for 2200 hours on the same PC, so i am well versed with its performance. I tried today on Linux again but- it's so choppy!! It's unplayable! Same exact graphical settings!

Other heavy games i tried:

Metro 2033: Pretty good.
Subnautica: I get maybe half the FPS than Win.
Outer Wilds: Terrible...
Spyro and Crash: Good.
Dark Souls 3: Doesn't get higher than 40 FPS and it's very unstable ( i think mostly high input delay ).
Sekiro: Similar to Dark Souls 3 but not as bad. Still had to play on Win.
Tekken 7: Another unplayable game on Linux for me.
Dark Souls Remastered: Best Proton experience i had. Even felt better than Win.

Honorable mentions:

OneShot: Didn't even try on Win cos of Win specific "interactions".
Assetto Corsa: Didn't try, cos it seems finicky and complex to install mods.
Far: Lone Sails and Far: Changing Tides: These are small indies with simple graphics, yet are blegh on Linux, especially the second one that was unplayable.
Blasphemous: Was running good but got soft locked due to a Proton specific bug, and could't use skins.
Any other indie was fine.

Putting stuff together

As you can see, my experience is far from good. In fact, the only high graphical games i can play on Linux are... Dark Souls Remastered???? Which is really not heavy! Metro 2033 and Metro Last Light ( tried for a bit ) as the heaviest, and they are native. Shadow Warrior is also native and is decent. Seems like only native games work good among the heaviest but tbf it's just Metro, i don't really have any other heavy game that is Linux native. Crash and Spyro are Proton and still run fine but they are really not that demanding. So i am having issues with Proton. I updated it, i even tried the glorious eggroll several times. I update Mesa with ernstp "MesaRC" which is updated to this day ( also having to install drivers from a random stranger's repo is not the best feeling ). I use CoreCtrl to set the CPU and GPU to performance. The only other clue is Vulkan giving an error. If i go into the system information, under Vulkan i see at the top WARNING: [Loader Message] Code 0 : terminator_CreateInstance: Failed to CreateInstance in ICD 2. Skipping ICD. Not sure what it means. But Vulkan games seem to run.

Been having these performances since always, on different distros, Arch included. Tried different Mesa repos. It just seems like the problem is not on my side, but then i see good performance from other people on YT and it made me wondering. Are they cherry picking cos of bias?! I don't wanna assume that, especially as they show games that don't run at all. But Linux fans can get... pushy at times so it wouldn't surprise me. Or maybe the samey performances compared to Win with powerful graphics cards somehow don't translate into same performance as Win with discrete to low graphics cards?!?! As i have a honourable RX 560.

Specs

Linux 6.5.0-27-generic 64 bit, Kubuntu 23.10 X11, libgl1-mesa-dri: 23.2.1-1ubuntu3.1 Ryzen 5 3600; RX 560 4GB; 16GB RAM
