Freesync over HDMI 2.0 (NOT 2.1) used to work with AMD Graphics. What happened?

Reddit Linux_Gaming - 14. März 2024 - 20:08

Title says it, about half a year ago I could successfully use VRR/Freesync over HDMI with my monitor with AMD Vega integrated graphics. This stopped working, then I updated my system, it then worked again for a while, I updated again, boom, broken, repeat.

After a while this rollercoaster of functioning/broken Freesync-over-HDMI stopped and I was left with the broken version. If I enable it in KDE system settings (i.e. setting it to 'Always' or 'Automatic' and then fullscreening a game) results in a black display.

Why? This isn't the HDMI 2.1/FRL thing that got blocked by the HDMI forum. My laptop doesn't even have an HDMI 2.1 output.

Here's my specs and environment:

KDE Plasma 6.0.2

Arch Linux (6.7.9-arch1-1)

AMD Ryzen 7 4800H

Integrated Vega Graphics

(GTX 1660 Ti dedicated GPU, not relevant here)

16 GB DDR4

Monitor: Alienware AW2521HFA

I would love if I could get back this feature. And for the record, I can confirm it did absolutely work, since my monitor has an OSD that shows the current refresh rate.

Thanks for any help

The Finals consistently freezes itself and Steam when connecting

Reddit Linux_Gaming - 14. März 2024 - 19:37

I have been trying to troubleshoot this SteamDB for hours, so maybe Reddit will help (I've read the post from 24 days ago about the finals and it didn't help me). I'm using Fedora 39 KDE with a 7800xt and a 7600x. I'm using Steam from the RPM Fusion nonfree repo. I've used proton experimental and proton ge, also with a few different launch commands.

When I click play on the finals from steam, it starts the loading window and then the EAC.exe window. After a few seconds, they close and a similar but different loading window opens for a couple of seconds. Then a full screen window opens, and begins to load. It then displays the finals logo and starts connecting. A pop up appears that asks you to agree with the privacy statement, and when accepted, the game resumes connecting. After about 4 seconds of connecting, the application freezes and so does steam.

I'm new to Linux, so I would appreciate it if you helped. I don't know if I've provided the right information, but I would be happy to check things if you told me what to do.

Thanks!

Endeavour broke on me. Weird flickering every time i open a game or program. And i dont like manjaro and i dont want to fresh install arch particularly is there any other cutting edge distros?

Reddit Linux_Gaming - 14. März 2024 - 18:57

I been using endeavour for about 2 years. Rare problems untill a few days ago i updated then everythinf started glitching out flashing and flickering. So it became unuseable. I trued to do a fresh install same problem. So i got worried it was my graphics card so i did a windows install to check because i had a windows usb already. Everything worked fine graphics card is fine. I just dont like windows.

So i figured since endeavour has crapped out on me maybe its time to do a little distro hopping and see whats out there. Ive used pop os and mint and ubuntu debian is fine but its not my favorite.

The computer is mostly for playing games on steam so thats basically my only stipulation its gotta play games on steam well, i have a nvidia 3070 for a graphics card

Do some steam games cause your PC to lock up?

Reddit Linux_Gaming - 14. März 2024 - 18:12

Hi all, first let me say I'm something of a Linux newbie. Only been on Manjaro for about 1 year. I'll often listen to youtube videos in the background while I play PC games. I've noticed that certain games have a high likelihood of locking up the computer. Some of my games I basically cannot play. While others have never locked it up.

Do you experience this?

I'm using the latest (LTS) kernel, with an I5 13600k and 32Gb of 6600Mhz RAM. AMD 5600 XT is the card.

If it matters, the computer locks up in an odd way imo. The screen turns black and the last 3 seconds of the youtube video's sound will replay. Usually just someone repeating a phrase as I listen to videos about A.i or something. Not sure if this is relevant though.

How to remove Steam game shortcuts?

Reddit Linux_Gaming - 14. März 2024 - 17:56

EDIT: Solved by removing the respective desktop files from .local/share/applications. Strange how there isn't an option on Steam to do this

How can I remove the desktop app menu entry for installed Steam games? The one that is added when you keep "create application shortcut" checked when installing a game. So far the only way I've found to do it is to uninstall the game, and then reinstall it with the option checked off. But this will take forever with all my games. If there's an option on Steam to just undo it I can't find it. (Fedora with Gnome Desktop non-Flatpak Steam)

Allow two applications to see each other in Bottles

Reddit Linux_Gaming - 14. März 2024 - 17:03

I have a translator application that hooks into the process of another application to scan for text and automatically translate it.

Using vanilla WINE, Lutris, or Steam, I can run both applications in the same prefix and the translator works correctly.

However, running both applications in the same Bottle at the same time, I cannot see any running processes to hook to.

Does Bottles have extra sandboxing that I need to overcome? Or perhaps a Flatpak permissions issue? I'd ask on the Bottles Discord but I can't phone verify my account (separate issue and working with Discord support on it).

My status does not appear as "playing" when I launch a non-steam game from my steam library

Reddit Linux_Gaming - 14. März 2024 - 15:11

Hi friends. When I add a non-steam game to my steam library, and launch it with proton-ge (or another), the game starts correctly, but my status appears green and as "playing" only for 1 second, and my nick turns blue again "connected".

The game starts up perfectly, but I would like it to appear as "playing" and green as usual. I'm using endeavouros, I don't know if I'm doing something wrong.

Thank you in advance for your help.

Games Freezing when in Fullscreen

Reddit Linux_Gaming - 14. März 2024 - 15:07

I am trying to run some games using Arch Linux on KDE 6 (x11) with the latest proprietary Nvidia drivers. However it seems there is a bug that prevents some of them to run in fullscreen. Palworld, for example, opens up and freezes at a black screen. However if I press the Super button to show the taskbar the game will start to run fine. However, as soon as I click back into the game it will freeze again but the audio of the game will still be playing normally. If I switch the game to windowed mode everything works fine.

I know it isn’t a hardware issue as it all works normally in Gnome using the exact same drivers and Proton settings. Any ideas what might be different in KDE that is causing this?
