Extremley Low FPS on linux (is it even connected to my gpu?)

(using minecraft as that is the way I found out this info, but it is for every game and maybe even the whole OS)

I am using Mint Linux with a ryzen 5800x and a 3070, but i am getting double or even single digit frames in ever game. My GPU does not appear and instead it is saying Llvmpipe and Mesa (not really sure what that is). How would I make it run off of my normal GPU. In the driver settings it says it recognizes my gpu and has the drivers for it. This is a issue on both the NVIDIA drivers and nouveau

Black screen launching Baldur's gate 3 on Steam

6 May 2024 - 11:24pm

Hello everyone,

I've been struggling with that issue for a while now and tested many things but can't get it to work unfortunately :/

I'm running a Arch Install on a Alienware M16 R12. I've deactivated the Intel card and now I should be fully running on the Nvidia card.

[root@kin-alien ~]# glxinfo | grep NVIDIA server glx vendor string: NVIDIA Corporation client glx vendor string: NVIDIA Corporation OpenGL vendor string: NVIDIA Corporation OpenGL renderer string: NVIDIA GeForce RTX 4070 Laptop GPU/PCIe/SSE2 OpenGL core profile version string: 4.6.0 NVIDIA 550.78 OpenGL core profile shading language version string: 4.60 NVIDIA OpenGL version string: 4.6.0 NVIDIA 550.78 OpenGL shading language version string: 4.60 NVIDIA OpenGL ES profile version string: OpenGL ES 3.2 NVIDIA 550.78

Cyberpunk 2077 runs well but when I launch Baldur's Gate 3, whether on DX11 or Vulkan, I get a black screen, the mouse cursor changes to the gauntlet and that's it. I changed Proton version and it's not helping.

Here are the logs, issue keeps looping.

[HELP]: KVM Gaming

6 May 2024 - 11:01pm

Hi! I have a PC with Gigabye B550m DS3H with a Ryzen 5 5600G with 16GBs of 3200MHz DDR4 RAM. I want to do some split-iGPU pass-through so that my Host and Guest Machines can share the same hardware without losing any signal while half of it is passed through. Does anyone have any sources for doing so? I cba to reboot into the wretched and filthy windows 11 just to play games with EAC on them.

To clarify: I only have the iGPU for graphical processing. That's it. I am trying to save up for a GPU but that seems to be a painfully slow process.

Constant redownloading of steam library when dual booting.

6 May 2024 - 8:52pm

I'm running a dualboot setup where my main OS is Universal Blue Aurora (basically Fedora 40 Kinoite) where I'm gaming using an arch-based distrobox container referencing a steam library hosted on a separate 4 TB SSD.

I'm also distrohopping through a bunch of secondary distros trying to find one where my Valve Index and SteamVR will actually work. The current one I have installed is Bazzite. Regardless of which other distro I've got in play though, as soon as I connect my steam library to it it will immediately redownload something for every game in the library, with some of the components being more than a gigabyte in size. If I then reboot into my main distro it does it all over again.

Basically every reboot between distros I'm downloading something like 20-30 gigs of patches. Is there any way I can moderate this behavior?

Need help choosing a distro

6 May 2024 - 8:46pm

Hi I’ve never used Linux but I want to make the switch but I’m not really sure where to start looking for a distro I run an r5 7700x and rtx 3060

I mainly use my pc for gaming but I also use it for watching F1 and coding. It must be able to run Surfshark vpn, the sims 4 and civ vi (modded) and F1 manager, Stardew valley, city skylines II and various other games ideally as wider compatibility as possible. I would also like to have the option of connecting a racing wheel eventually although controller support isn’t necessary.

I was looking at drauger and Ubuntu however I’m not really sure where to begin so would love some suggestions.

Can We Really Achieve Anything?

6 May 2024 - 6:00pm

Hello,

We, as a few close friends, have been working on this game for over a year. Our goal is to make a beautiful, fluid metroidvania game. We are trying to make the game deeper by adding rogue like, souls lite and hack & slash features to our game. Additionally, as in every roguelike game, character customization is also available in our game. In fact, we want to make this character customization as diverse as possible. Our goal is for players to be able to create a build that serves the gameplay they want.

We encountered many serious problems during the development period. In addition to all this, as a development team, we have not worked in any other job during this entire time. Some of us even resigned from our jobs and decided to take part in this project. The result of all of this is not to be a studio with a bloody mouthful and only a money target, but to create something that people enjoy playing and sharing their experiences with each other.

Our development process continues at full speed despite financial difficulties and sacrifices. But now our motivation has started to decrease. That's why we thought that maybe we could gain motivation by sharing the game we are developing with you. Our game does not have a steam page yet. (We hope we will open it in June if we have enough money) However, if you want to support us, you can join our discord server. Our community is extremely valuable to us and we attach importance to their thoughts and ideas during the development phase.

Our Discord server > https://discord.gg/UHffeaKmh8Here's what we've done so far during the development period:

  • Resource collection system was made (xp drop)

  • Camera system was made
  • A total of 26 enemy designs that were implemented and killed were designed and provided as assets.
  • A system that allows the main character to create combos during battle has been prepared.
  • Animation cancellation added to the game
  • 8 different traps added to the game
  • Made corrections and tweaks to systems based on momentum and in-game balance, such as in-game damage, purchases, movement, and more.

Gta V on Linux

6 May 2024 - 5:21pm

I have been trying to get Gta V to run on my Kubuntu PC. When I start the game from Steam in proton 9.0 I get the error that says that I need to use the rockstar launcher, but there isn't any for linux. And the weird part is that Gta V runs perfectly on my Steam deck. Anyone that knows anything that could help? (Sorry for bad English)

Wine/Proton & Ingame Web-UI fonts

6 May 2024 - 4:54pm

I initially thought of asking this question in wine_gaming, but it seems like it's deserted there, and I already have a "no hope" kind of question. So, here's the gist - there's a game called Guild Wars 2. It works perfectly, except for one thing - several in-game windows operate like web pages, and the fonts are also pulled from the game's website. But for some reason, this doesn't work at all, and all we can see in those windows is our beloved and awful Times New Roman.

Over the past day, I've tried:

  • Installing fonts in the system
  • Installing fonts in the GW2 prefix
  • Installing fonts in the Proton directory itself
  • Installing gecko additionally in prefixes and through winetricks
  • Adding fonts to the registries of all prefixes
  • Replacing Times New Roman fonts with game fonts in the prefix registries
  • Checking Internet Explorer from those prefixes, and interestingly enough, it displays fonts correctly on the forum, but I can't check the game's API pages (the windows themselves) because it's a hardcoded feature of the game.

The question is - how do I get this beast to correctly load data for the web interface-based UI? Here's the CSS used for these windows. Maybe someone has faced a similar issue (not necessarily in this game, maybe in others). I'd appreciate any help.

Setting up Linux on Raid0 configured laptop (Lenovo Legion 9i, gen 9)

6 May 2024 - 3:54pm

I was looking to buy this laptop for a long time (since few years back, before Steam Deck got announced). Since then they seemed to have made few changes.

The SSD are set in Raid 0 configuration (not mirror, but as a single 2 TB drive). It might be called Fake RAID. Linux has some known issues with this laptop series (including 7 pro). The biggest being speakers do not work for every new laptop, until people add the driver to Linux kernel. That's why I wanted to keep it as a dual boot, until the speaker issue got resolved.

I can install Linux, but as a single boot. I can break the Raid configuration and change it to AHCI, however installing Windows using Windows 11 ISO does not seem to work. It does not recognize the drives. I had read, you need to have additional driver file during installation. I tried to keep the Intel Rapid Storage Technology driver in the setup usb, but that did not seem to work. May be it needs to be installed first in existing windows and files copied over (I have not tried that).

Only other way to restore Windows seems Lenovo's recovery media. It takes around 2-3 hours to setup, but resets everything back (including Raid 0).

I also tried to setup Linux directly on the Raid setup. However, after installation (Manjaro), it booted (first boot) up to certain stage, but failed to recognize the proper partition.

Wanted to see, if others have come across similar issues and successfully setup dual boot with Linux.

Turbo Snail

6 May 2024 - 3:32pm

Turbo Snail is a small vertical scrolling endless game. The player plays a small snail that has to try not to collide with the top or bottom of the screen on horizontally scrolling levels.

https://preview.redd.it/v3mi9u6c6tyc1.jpg?width=3310&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=8db61768eb4159f37e7713a4164fbefb08354c5d

In doing so, it has to collect strawberries, which give it points for the score. Drops of water accelerate the speed of the pinto for a short period of time. Bombs that are collected can be used against the nasty bats.
