Couple Questions

Reddit Linux_Gaming - 4 Apr 2024 - 2:39am

I am getting so irritated with windows 11 I am seriously considering removing and switching to Linux. Couple issues I have is with that pc I use a lot for gaming with steam and I have a nvidia gpu with an amd processor, I know at least the gpu may complicate it some. I only have a little experience with Ubuntu that I put on an old laptop years ago, nothing recent. Please bear with me I know this group probably gets asked for tutorials a lot and I did read the faq's. I'm still undecided on distro but mint seems fairly simple maybe leaning that way. Any advice or pointers that may help? Also if there is a good easy to follow step by step out there I could use that as well. Thank you all and sorry again if this is redundant with a lot of questions you get.

Am I the only one that is so close to switching to Linux but those few Linux unsupported games are holding me back

Reddit Linux_Gaming - 4 Apr 2024 - 1:06am

I am (sadly) using Windows 11, and while I like the modern UI, I hate everything else about it: bugs, glitches, forcing AI into my system and most importantly telemetry and data harvesting.

I want to switch to Linux so bad and I have experience with it because I had Arch on my old laptop before, but for some, to me unknown reason, game companies hate Linux and don't add support for Wine/Proton. I absolutely love Rainbow 6 Siege, Warzone and sometimes even like to boot up Fortnite to play with friends, but of course they don't support Linux.

If only Fortnite was not supported but R6 and WZ were, I would immediately switch to Linux. If WZ was not supported, but R6 was, I would hesitate a bit since I don't play WZ that much but would still like to play it. Sadly, R6S is what's keeping me back as I really love the game and I don't want to hassle with dual booting or virtualizing.

Anyone else not switching to Linux yet because of your favorite but Linux-unsupported games?

Best OS for a thin client pc?

Reddit Linux_Gaming - 4 Apr 2024 - 12:21am

I've recently acquired a Dell Wyse 5070

Wanted some advice on which OS to go for, I have an old m.2 sata ssd I plan to use it with

I was thinking of going with lubuntu but wasn't sure if that would create too much overhead on the little machine

My use case will just be old games, nes, snes, gameboy ect and hoping to play ps1 and n64 too

I'm aware of batocera but also wanted to be able to install some of my gog games onto this machine so would prefer something with a desktop gui

Any other advice as well would be very appreciated

Thanks, much love

I am losing my mind, and its game companies that are causing it

Reddit Linux_Gaming - 3 Apr 2024 - 10:37pm

one simple step with common anticheats (easy anti cheat, battleye) to enable support for gnu+linux

Some companies go out of their way to deny linux users (ubisoft with rainbow six siege, EA with their kernel level anticheat)

Valorant wont run on windows 11 without a tpm 2.0 module, not every pc has one, or can support a tpm 2.0 module. Run windows 10, trying to support linux would be too much hastle for them.

Are you kidding me?

Wish valve had the backbone to say "if your game doesnt work on our handheld console (the steam deck), we wont put it on the store page".

I know that is a bad decision financial wise, but the only games that dont seem to work are anticheat related, or could be solved very simply.

Thank you to the devs that make the games work, day one or not long after, or are striving to implement support.

To the devs that do not support players that either cannot afford a valid windows license, cannot afford hardware upgrades, or do not want to run spyware, I will no longer support you, or buy content from you.

Wine Wayland not detecting my controller

Reddit Linux_Gaming - 3 Apr 2024 - 10:10pm

First of all, I'm aware Wayland support in Wine is still experimental.

I'm running Proton TKG 9.5 which includes Wayland support by editing the prefix registry.

Games do run under native Wayland just fine but I've noticed that only my keyboard and mouse are detected, my DualSense is not.

This is odd because a friend of mine doesn't have this issue despite us using the same distro and Wine version (only difference is that they use an Xbox controller)

Any wine Wayland testers also have this issue? I'll rather run native Wayland until Nvidia supports explicit sync on May 15th.

any suggestion on how to get Humankind game working on Linux (Intel Xeon 2690 v4 + AMD 6800xt)

Reddit Linux_Gaming - 3 Apr 2024 - 10:07pm

once it reaches the first screen after the logos, the game just quits back to desktop (I never got to see the main menu)

I've tried:

  • using Fedora 39 and Ubuntu 22.04
  • I've tried Proton 8.05, 9-beta and experimental versions
  • I've seen some tips from protondb but those did not make any difference.

Thank you.

How to run FarCry 5 (from Steam)?

Reddit Linux_Gaming - 3 Apr 2024 - 9:29pm

Hello. I have far cry 5 on steam and when I used to play it on windows, it always requires ubisoft connect in order to launch it. Here on linux, I installed ubisoft connect through lutris, but I have no idea where to go from here.

I tried starting it from steam, but it goes from running back to stopped after a few seconds.
I did set everything to run with Proton Experimental (tried that and GE-9.2 or whatever version the latest is for proton that we have on steam) but it never launches (both main game and arcade editor)

I tried to see my library in lutris but it never showed me any games. Also tried adding FC5 manually but like with any other game I tried it never worked for me. That's why I always used Bottles to run my games (though locally installed files and not through steam)

Any help would be appreciated!
I run Nobara 39 KDE Plasma (Gnome DE)

AMD GPU is a worst video card you could get right now

Reddit Linux_Gaming - 3 Apr 2024 - 8:46pm

I know that my post will be downvoted to oblivion cause of my "whining", but I just need some place to whine I guess. And I also tired to see how many people still pushing almost propaganda level of bullshit, about how good and awesome amd gpu's this days.

So, my main complain right now, is that I can't play games that I wanna play: Diablo 4 and Enshrouded both crashing whole driver after couple of seconds of gameplay. That somehow RT related, as I can assume from bug reports there and there. I wouldn't bother to post this, if it's was "once in a while" issue or GPU was brand new or if bug was brand new. No to all of that. Bug exists for a two months already. And no, I don't wanna play on minimal settings on my 7900xtx. It's fucking stupid.

On top of that, there still old issues like no HDMI 2.1 (what is only supported connection type on my LG C2 and "HDMI 2.1 to display port" adapter ain't chip nor easy to find) or sometimes doesn't working power\clocks control. Also, your can't use so praised gamescope, cause time to time it will also trigger this weird AMDGPU crash.

So yea, not the best experience on my most top of the line amd gpu (NITRO+ RX 7900 XTX Vapor-X). I literally bought e-waste for 1200 euro. I can't play new games on this card and soon it will become obsolete, cause new generation will arrive, bringing better performance. It will not become useless, but just think for a moment: you paying not for investment, you paying to play right now. No one buys top of the line video card to maybe play in the next year. So, I could just bought nvidia card for same price, but didn't do that exactly because of rumors of "best possible gpu driver on linux". Where is it exactly?
Also, I knew someone will go in comments and go like "but nvidia!..": nvidia at least would play my games. I don't care if some odd feature like "solo-gpu VFIO passtrhought" may not work, I literally need gpu to do basic stuff - playing games. Who cares if driver are proprietary, if it focking works?

And that not all, currently I see a wave of post on "amd help" subreddit, due to driver issues on windows. So, compared to nvidia, I can't even switch to windows to fix some of my issues, due to fact, that I will simply get new one.

So, my "hot take" is: amd gpus shouldn't be praised as "savior of linux desktop". Why only nvidia gets all the hate?

What is the current state of the Nexus Mods App? Is it usable for the casual modder?

Reddit Linux_Gaming - 3 Apr 2024 - 7:59pm

Hi all,

So, Nexus Mods is currently working on...I guess we could call it a successor to Vortex Mod Manager? It didn't really catch my attention until I learned one thing: It has a native Linux version.

Personally, this is huge news for me, as I have never been able to get Mod Organizer 2 nor Vortex working properly under Linux no matter what method I've tried (and believe me, I've tried most, maybe even all the methods. All methods had at least one fatal flaw. I can't really remember the specific flaws, but I know they had them.)

I had first heard about the Nexus Mods App a few months back, but back then, it was pre-0.1 and had no downloadable compiled version, so you'd have to compile it from source yourself. (Which I assume means it was not ready for general usage) But now, it is 0.4 at the time of writing, and has downloadable complied versions for both Windows and Linux.

My main question is this: is it ready for practical use? Like, I'm a pretty casual mod user. Just need it to have the abilities to install mods, be able to update them, uninstall mods, and that's pretty much it I think.

The games I'd be using it with in the immediate future are Skyrim Special Edition Fallout New Vegas

And I know a question that could easily be asked of me is "Why don't you test it out yourself, you lazy jerk?" Which is fair enough, but...I spent so much time trying to get Vortex/MO2 to work, that I just have...well, I'm not going to say trauma, because that's REALLY overly dramatic, but...I don't know how to explain it. But I know that if I try this new software and it doesn't work, I am going to spend WAY too much of my time trying to get it to work.Bottom line is...I just can't go through that again, right now.

So it is my hope that somebody can take the software for a test, or they've already been using it and can let me know. I've tried looking up info about it, but for some reason, there is VERY little info on it. Hell, the only two places I really found any info on it are on the software's GitHub page, and the Nexus page announcing it, so there's really no word on if it is actually ready for general usage or not.

Any info on this would be greatly appreciated. Thank you so much.

Has anyone yet been successful using HDR with the new AMD_PRIVATE_COLOR in 6.8 with Plasma 6 and Kernel 6.8

Reddit Linux_Gaming - 3 Apr 2024 - 7:43pm

Pretty much title. I recently built a new gaming desktop and overall I'm super impressed how well things are going. One thing I can't seem to beat no matter the leveling of fiddling though is HDR.

On a stock 6.7 Kernel I'm able to play games with gamescope in HDR at commit (https://github.com/ValveSoftware/gamescope/commit/b59695665abdc4512b50ca9130822171eb0e4163) although the steam overlay is broken and doesn't work and the colors are washed out.

I recently upgraded my Kernel to 6.8 (linux-cachyos) for NixOS which has AMD_PRIVATE_COLOR enabled so I was hopping this would fix my color issues with HDR but now when I enable the vk_hdr_layer (https://github.com/Zamundaaa/VK_hdr_layer) with gamescope it crashes on the above commit and (https://github.com/ValveSoftware/gamescope/commit/26db73933aca7bec9fdc0342b3420c7fb0ed7b04)

So if you're happy playing games on Plasma 6 with HDR I'd like to hear your software versions!

What kernel/mesa/gamescope are you currently using. Bonus points if you have the AMD_PRIVATE_COLOR working or even the old valve patches.

Differing performance between Arch distros.

Reddit Linux_Gaming - 3 Apr 2024 - 6:52pm

So I've been using Endeavor OS for around a month, and just recently I want to give pure Arch a shot. I consider myself fairly technical and I really enjoyed the vanilla Arch install process. Something I did notice is for example, on Endeavor OS, Persona 3 reload runs at 120fps locked with all settings maxed except for RT and resolution scale set for 125%. On the other hand, I get around 80-110 fps on vanilla Arch with the same settings. The main difference I know between the two distros is that I used the standard kernal with Endeavor and I'm using the Zen kernal with Arch, can't figure out the discrepancy though.

Bricked GPU while playing Proton on Linux Mint

Reddit Linux_Gaming - 3 Apr 2024 - 6:21pm

Two years ago, I made my own PC and decided to use Linux Mint as the operating system. It had been going great until recently. While playing No Man's Sky, through Proton, the computer would randomly crash completely. I'm talking screen goes black, and all the fans start spinning at Max speed. The computer wouldn't respond to anything, and I had to hold the power button to turn it off. When I restarted the computer, it didn't give me any error message, so I just ignored it and went back to playing. However, after four crashes spread over 3 weeks, the computer simply stopped turning on. Pressing the power button did nothing until I removed the Nvidia GPU, at which point it would then start with a black screen. After dropping it off at the repair shop, the technician told me that the GPU was effectively bricked, and he attributed it to being a water-cooled GPU.

What I want to know is, is this really an issue with water-cooled GPUs? The technician was very headstrong about it being a motherboard issue when I dropped it off, and refused to listen to even a brief description of what the issue was; his attitude made it so I find myself having trouble trusting his disdain for water-cooled GPUs.

If it is an issue with water-cooled GPUs, is it worth cashing in on the warranty to get it replaced, or would that just be pushing the problem down the road for another crash in the future?

Finally, are there any simple steps I can take to prevent this in the future? All the crashes happened whilst running Linux Mint, playing specifically No Man's Sky through Proton. Is it just bad luck that they were all the same game, or is it more a consequence of NMS being the only graphically intensive game that I have played while the GPU was already having issues that I was unaware of? Is that even possible?

Pre-Posting Edit: While tracking down the links below, I realized that the GPU isn't even water-cooled, at least I'm pretty sure. He might have been referring to the AIO cooler attached to the CPU? But that's not really relevant to a GPU issue, is it?
