What's the reality of Linux gaming?

Reddit Linux_Gaming - 7 May 2024 - 7:43pm

Considering doing a full switch from Windows 11 to Linux after all the stuff going on with Windows sucking so much.

What's the actual reality of gaming on Linux, both through launchers like Steam and emulators. Is there going to be a performance difference in any way or will it mostly just be the same?

Is there currently any way to play games like fortnite that don't work on Linux on Linux somehow like on a Windows VM?

Gamesir T4 Kaleid only works in Android mode

Reddit Linux_Gaming - 7 May 2024 - 7:25pm

I've heard this controller works out of the box but I can only get it to work if I set it to Android mode. If I set it to Xbox/PC mode Linux recognises that an Xbox controller is connected by USB but nothing happens when I try to use it. What's going on?

What compression level for BTRFS on a HDD dedicated to steam games?

Reddit Linux_Gaming - 7 May 2024 - 7:17pm

I've been using BTRFS for years before I completely switched over to Linux from windows as there was a BTRFS driver for windows. I've been windows free for about 3 years now and finally have the download speed to really fill my HDD. What's the best configuration for speed and maximum storage? I've read forced compression is a no-go but I want to hear everyone's opinion.

Hello everyone, I am a basic gamer trying to mod my steam deck and I need help.

Reddit Linux_Gaming - 7 May 2024 - 7:03pm

I have a steam deck and while this sounds silly I am trying to mod among us. The issue is I can't find linux mod files only windows. I am trying to avoid spending $100 to install a new 1tb ssd and doing a fresh windows install. While it would be really cool to do I would like to tackle that at a later date when i want to take on the task of doing sims 4 with all the cc and mods. Is there an actual way to acheieve this or am i asking for something the steam deck cant do?

Hades 2 X Error BadMatch, major opcode 149, minor opcode 4

Reddit Linux_Gaming - 7 May 2024 - 6:38pm

Like the title says, Hades II (Platinum on ProtonDB) is giving me this error in the logs when I try running it before crashing instantly on launch.

X Error of failed request: BadMatch (invalid parameter attributes) Major opcode of failed request: 149 () Minor opcode of failed request: 4 Serial number of failed request: 639 Current serial number in output stream: 642

I've tried every version of Proton, including bleeding edge. I don't know how to read/diagnose X errors. What else can I do?

Thank you!

Wayland auto-suspends games when switching to another workspace, is there any way to disable the behavior?

Reddit Linux_Gaming - 7 May 2024 - 6:03pm

I'm having this annoyance with Wayland where if I run a game inside one workspace and then I switch to another one, even though I can still hear the game audio for most games, it gets put into this weird suspended-mode where most loading and gameplay seems to freeze while the game is still running.

This is incredibly annoying at games such as Baldur's Gate 3 where if I move my character somewhere and switch workspaces (which puts the game in this weird suspension), upon me returning my companions who always follow me seem to arrive at the destination while my main character is still at the start, and only moves while the game is in focus. That, and the game just doesn't load while I'm in a different workspace if I'm in a loading screen.

This does happen with other games as well, and I've tried utilities such as gamescope or virtual desktop through bottles, but it doesn't help. On Xorg (tested with i3 and awesomewm), the game does run normally when I'm in a different workspace so I do believe this is an issue with Wayland.

I've tested this with both Sway and Hyprland and both wm's have the same behavior, and my distro is Arch.

Any ideas?

Bazzite + HDR and 120hz stopped working in gamescope

Reddit Linux_Gaming - 7 May 2024 - 5:00pm

AMD 6700xt with 5900

Was running the latest version of Bazzite over hdmi to LGC1 and all was working correctly within game scope with both 4K120 and HDR. Now, game scope won’t detect my monitor is HDR capable and frequently flashes green at the top. When I switch to desktop mode, no issues with either HDR or the higher refresh rate options.
