Can someone help me understand how Wine/Bottles work in Linux? (Read Description)

Reddit Linux_Gaming - 8 May 2024 - 12:30am

I'm new to linux gaming. I wanted to try how games work so I gave it a go. On my Zorin OS I transferred an old game from a DVD in order to test how games work in general in Linux. After that I installed Wine using Terminal. Then I installed Zorin windows app support using Terminal which I think also installs some version of wine along with Bottles.

Case 1- I double clicked on the exe file and the game opened. Not fully but the first logo screen appeared.

Case 2- I created a bottle and transferred the game inside the .var/flatpak bottles directory and executed the exe. It also ran and the first logo appeared. Bottles app had a lot of configuration options including DLSS, Fidelity FX and many more. But the drawback is I've to put the game in the flatpak directory without it I can't use bottles. Also in the components section, under runner subsection there are two options soda-9.0-1 and sys-wine-9.0. I think one is included in the windows app support and another is the actual wine software.

Case 3- I tried launching the game using the terminal by giving command wine game.exe and it showed a lot of errors like Unhandeled type and broken nvidia Randr detected. I tried putting the game at different directories including .wine/directory but the game wouldn't launch only the errors were there.

So I've my doubts regarding these cases. First of all the double click case is the most convenient one. Just click twice and that's it. Bottles provides a lot of options and settings. So which is the best option to run games in linux? And how they differ? Which provides the best performance without any latency issues snd stutters?

Recommend me gaming notebook for Linux

Reddit Linux_Gaming - 8 May 2024 - 12:23am

Hello everyone, good evening! I'm Brazilian and as many already know, our life is not easy haha, I wanted some recommendations for gaming notebooks that still have great hardware compatibility on Linux. Today I currently use a ThinkPad x230 with Debian 12 and this equipment of mine is already begging for a rest haha. You can recommend notebooks with fifth generation processors and above, there is no problem since the larger ones are more expensive for us Brazilians and end up making acquisition difficult. Thank you in advance for taking some of your time to recommend a machine to me haha.

BDO Issue

Reddit Linux_Gaming - 7 May 2024 - 11:59pm

Hi,

So I have been trying to get BDO (Black Desert) to run on my Linux Laptop using Pop! OS 22.04 (Laptop has Ryzen 9 CPU and Nvidia 3060 GPU) I have tried installing the website version using Lutris (Used Wine-GE) and Steam (Used Proton GE and experimental along with following any tips people had for non steam users in their proton reports) and can not even get past the launcher, it will either freeze before I can hit play on the launcher or it will not load the launcher and just say "Cannot access launcher. Please try again later"

https://preview.redd.it/z2n7k2kfs2zc1.png?width=1920&format=png&auto=webp&s=579c3147ee648b02f97e8a5454e5bd5f6443eab5

I do see reports on proton of people being able to play the game (I know proton is mainly for games on steam but people from reports have gotten the website version working as well) TBH I am stumped I have some experience gaming on Linux but I am no where close to understanding how to figure this out on my own this issue seems to happen no matter how I install it.

Question about xone driver & chatpad support

Reddit Linux_Gaming - 7 May 2024 - 11:58pm

Does anyone have an Xbox one controller (connected wirelessly if that makes any difference) with the chatpad that can comment on what support means in this context? Does the chatpad get treated like a normal keyboard that can input as a standard keyboard does to any given program? Rather than app specific support as it seems to be on the Xbox One.

For context, the reason I'm asking is to see if I can seamlessly switch between an Xbox One and a Linux PC and have keyboard input for both machines. All of the third party controller keyboards have the dongle that make this switching behavior impossible (without switching the dongle around).

It's a shame they discontinued the chatpad, but if I hear from someone with experience using it successfully with xone with the ability to input in any given program like a normal keyboard, then it might be worth the silly markup over the 3rd party offerings.

Thanks for sharing your experience using the chatpad on Linux!

(Vent) Platinum Game Lethal Company likely costs us a new Linux User 😤😤😤

Reddit Linux_Gaming - 7 May 2024 - 10:36pm

Boy this was a frustrating experience. My teenage son decides he wants to at least dual boot Linux and Windows (finally) because he really doesn't want to go to Windows 11 next year. I'm like that's great. I get a 1tb SSD for his laptop that'll be used for Linux, and some tools and we make it a whole thing of us opening the laptop, cleaning the dust, reapplying the thermal paste and thermal pads, installing the second SSD...it's great. He did great.

Then we get to installing Linux. I have done this more than enough times but oh boy...my worst install experience had to happen with my son all thanks to Garuda Linux(his choice after showing him a few distro's). Basically there's something wrong with their Dragonized Gaming edition iso, so I use the regular Dragonized edition instead and install the gaming stuff separately. Otherwise, you won't even boot into a live session.

But now comes what I thought was going to be hook line and sinker, Protondb Platinum rated "Lethal Company". One of his favorite games and it's Platinum. Awesome. Install it, let the shaders load annnnnd...black screen.

Wayland issue. No problem. Switched to X11.

Able to boot into the game. Able to start a server. But then joining a server...nope...nope...nope...nope...20 nopes. No version of Proton was gonna let my son join a server today (yes, I tried GE too). Unfortunately testing it in Windows, he joins a server right away.

I'll try to convince him to try a single player game but he's basically just wants to be able to turn on his laptop and play.

...can't argue with that...unfortunately the whole thing has soured him on Linux.

Insane that a "Platinum" rated made Linux look so bad to my son. And latest reports are not giving issues like this so I don't get it. I understand these are Windows games, but Platinum should equal damn near Native.

Ugh. If anyone knows what the issue is, feel free to chime in. MSI GF65 10eu laptop, with a Nvidia RTX3060 6GB, i5-10500H, 16gigs of Ram, should be on the Linux Zen Kernel 6.8.9 and Nvidia driver 550.78

Simutrans 124 has been released!

Reddit Linux_Gaming - 7 May 2024 - 9:36pm

The latest version of Simutrans has been announced after a two-year interval. If you haven't heard of it, it's a transport simulation or tycoon game. You can build roads, railway lines, ports, and airports, and connect cities and industries using everything from horse-drawn carriages to supersonic aircraft and maglevs. Some of its distinctive features compared to similar games are:

  • Destinations: Every passenger and cargo shipment has a unique destination, so you have to design your lines according to supply & demand, instead of assuming passengers will go where you want.
  • Flexibility: Almost anything can be configured to your preferences.
  • Schedules: If you want to, you can set up precise timetables, so that flight from Los Angeles leaves at 10:19 and not a moment sooner.
  • Variety: You can choose between many different building and vehicle packs, so you can be immersed in the worlds of 1930s British buses, 1850s German carriages, 1960s Japanese Shinkansen... or even design circuits transporting electrons around a 2020s motherboard.

Although it's one of the oldest Linux games (it was started in the 1990s), it is still actively developing. The main new feature in v124 is an overhaul of the user interface, with many dialogs made easier to read, and proper handling of modern fonts, so you can can make your station signs look more like your favourite historical railroad or airline. This has made game much easier to play on smartphones and tablets. And almost 200 bugs have been fixed.

One thing that hasn't changed is the pseudo-3D graphics system, so don't expect the scenic sunsets of an AAA game. But the gameplay is second to none and many of the graphics sets have a charm of their own, especially those hand-drawn in the style of classic comics, or the meticulous reconstructions of real 19th century German buildings.

As you'd expect from a game with a free software licence, this release will eventually be available in all major Linux distributions (starting with the Google Play Store, since the Android release is now out of beta and an official platform). But hopefully you can't wait that long, so you can get it now direct from the community or on Steam. Inevitably there have been a flurry of new bug reports this week, so there's likely to be a minor release this weekend, with the most important fixes already live on Steam.

Sound problems after switching to KDE Plasma (5.27.10)

Reddit Linux_Gaming - 7 May 2024 - 8:38pm

After switching from Linux Mint to KDE (Tuxedo OS), I have sound issues while I'm gaming. I don't have this problem when I watch movies or listen to music.

In Linux Mint I had no issues. With Tuxedo OS, everything works also great, but the missing short sounds while I'm gaming makes me crazy. It happens when I plug my Notebook on the TV and when I play on the Notebook Screen with speakers or headphones.

The missing sounds sound on my TV are more intensive as with Notebook speakers or headphones.

  • disabled balooctl

  • disabled compositor

  • activated/deactivated gamemode and mangohud

  • tried different Proton/Proton-GE versions

  • switched audioformat from Bitstream to PCM on my TV

Is it me or Apex legends is crashing at easy-anticheat splash screen?

Reddit Linux_Gaming - 7 May 2024 - 8:16pm

I played some games before the update and now it isn't working

Like in the ignite update you had to place some file related to easy-anticheat into the main game folder.

Any fixes are welcomed.

warmane wotlk with lutris

Reddit Linux_Gaming - 7 May 2024 - 7:51pm

so I am a linux beginner and I am trying to get warmane wotlk to work on fedora. I installed lutris and tried to install the game from Wow.exe from the folder included in torrent. Here is how it went:

  1. I clicked install, everything looked good, but the game launched during the installation. I waited for some time, nothing was happening, so I turned the game off and after that lutris let me click finish installation. When I tried to run the game in lutris after that I got an error saying it did not install properly.

  2. I removed the game and tried again. This time when the game launched during installation I tried logging in and entering the word. Everything worked perfectly, so this should mean that the game could run just fine right? but again, I turned it off, finished instalation and the same error as before.

  3. so I tried again (always the same process), I wanted to screenshot the errors to help me troubleshoot the issue. but this time the game launched with a black screen only and lutris started to show a lot of errors like this: failed to open Z: \home\user\World of Warcraft 3.3.5a (no install)\dosdevices\z: \home\user.local\share\Trash\files\wotlk\dosdevices\z: \home\user.local\share\Trash\files\ .....

Since the name of the folder includes "no install" I thought it is not a regural file and the game will not work at all. But now that I was able to actually run the game during installation (even all of my addons loaded too) I am just very confused. Does anyone know how to install this game properly please?

TF2 crashing on Arch Linux before client info gets sent

Reddit Linux_Gaming - 7 May 2024 - 7:50pm

This is all post 64-bit update btw. I've been playing TF2 using KDE Plasma on X11 with an RTX 2070 super and proprietary drivers launching the game with Legacy OpenGL, no launch options. This was the only way the game worked with no issues as using NVIDIA didn't work on Wayland for me.

I had then switched to an AMD GPU, RX 6700 XT, and just went back into my Arch install, uninstalled nvidia drivers, installed AMD drivers, started Wayland as it worked this time and was able to play TF2 both the normal launch option and the OpenGL one. All of this is on a flatpak install of Steam.

I then have made a fresh install of Arch with the AMD GPU, installing Steam using pacman this time, but now it started crashing everytime before I could receive client information. Sometimes when restarting the game it all worked flawlessly, can join casual games, use the map command but would not work again after another restart and I can't figure out why it randomly decided to work at moments when I haven't changed anything at all. Downloaded the flatpak version of steam again but no success to launch TF2.

Afterwards, I tried installing the NVIDIA GPU again then the AMD GPU hoping it would somehow bring me back to how it was at the beginning to no success. Then made a fresh Arch install with the NVIDIA GPU, then installing the AMD GPU again, no success. Final attempt was copying everything that seemed relevant in my bash_history from the working install and making a fresh install again, NVIDIA GPU first, AMD GPU after, no success.

Countless other methods have been attempted by me to no success after 2 days of trying from morning to evening, also searching for a bunch of potential problems and looking for people with similar problems but I just can't come to a solution.

I just hope someone out there knows a fix or maybe I just have to wait for TF2 or Valve to do something idk.
