Selaco is easily the game I am most excited about this year, a GZDoom powered shooter that had a brilliant demo but Altered Orbit Studios are about to delist the demo.

Linux VR gaming, here it comes

Reddit Linux_Gaming - 8 May 2024 - 12:36pm

SteamVR:
Fixed a bug where compatibility mode would fail for certain controller / HMD combinations and legacy input titles.
This release has an experimental feature allowing overlays to use controller simulation in bindings.
Disabled AMD Wireless VR driver by default. You can reenable it under startup/shutdown manage addons. This is a wireless driver installed by the AMD GPU driver that can interfere with some new, asynchronous paths in SteamVR.
Detect when AMD drivers were installed, but no AMD card is present, preventing "Error 309" and other crashes when loading LiquidVR.
Fixed some localization issues in the binding UI.
Fixing missing haptic component in some vive tracker profiles.
Fixing some scenarios where the menu button didn't work on HTC wrist trackers.
Add ability for Vive tracker haptic pogo pins to be bound.
Steam Link:
Steam VR 2.5 release corresponds to Steam Link client version 2.0.8.748
Improved prediction for increased lateral tracking stability.
Fix initialization issue causing connection failure. Requires client and server to both be updated.
Fix issue causing persistent failure when headset goes into standby and returns.
Fix deadlock on host when USB devices are inserted or removed.
Resolved two client crashes.
Fix an issue with video encoder initialization on certain AMD integrated GPUs.
OpenXR:
Fix Vive tracker menu pogo pin not being mapped correctly for OpenXR apps.
Linux:
Add support for direct mode drivers (IVRDriverDirectModeComponent) on Linux.
Improved launch scripts and log capture for bug reports.
Fixed random colors appearing at the periphery of the right eye's viewable area.
Fixed SteamVR Home launch script.
Fixed an SDL compatibility problem on Fedora.

SPTarkov stuttering

Reddit Linux_Gaming - 8 May 2024 - 12:00pm

Just coming by to ask if you guys who have tried playing SPTarkov on Linux have also experienced stutters? The game seems to be running fine, but randomly every a couple of seconds I get lag spikes that drop the FPS by 10-20, which makes the game really unpleasant to play.

This is not a specs issue probably, becuase I run the game smoothly (60-90 fps without stutters on the more optimized maps, fuck Streets lol) on windows.

Wondering if there can be anything done to fix this, as I really would prefer to play the game on Linux.

After a couple of Beta releases, Valve has now launched the latest stable release of SteamVR which brings in the recent Linux improvements.

How often do you need to fix performance in games?

Reddit Linux_Gaming - 8 May 2024 - 11:04am

I have switched from windows a week ago. I have used a linux before but never have daily driven it until now. I am currently using EndevourOS. My experiance thus far has been great, however the only somewhat lacking area is my gaming performance. I have a 13th i7 and 4060 Lenovo Laptop. I have installed Nvidia propierty drivers. I get +/- 20 fps less then on windows.

I have found a few resources/guides on how to improve performance from the EndevourOS forum and linux gaming wiki which I intend to follow when I have some free time.

Basically I would like to know how often would I need to be tinkering to get good performance or is this largely a once in awhile thing. I am contemplating switching to something like Nobara if I have to often tinker to get close to windows performance as when I have time to play games, I dont want to be trying to improve performance.

Prey and Dishonored 2 crashes (Proton experimental and 9)

Reddit Linux_Gaming - 8 May 2024 - 9:18am

Just this last week, Prey will load, but try to start a game and it immediately crashes with a memory error. Same for Dishonored 2. Both from the same developer.

All other games seem fine so far.

Anyone else seeing an issue? I don't see an uptick of errors when I search. I've run steam with logging, but honestly I don't understand the output.

Question about Bazzite Desktop image and Proton GE 9-3

Reddit Linux_Gaming - 8 May 2024 - 9:17am

Hey, maybe someone with more knowledge can help me. I saw that Bazzite uses Gamescope and I was wondering if on a Desktop Image for my desktop, would there be conflict/moving/deleting of files if I use Proton GE 9-3 with Desktop/Gamemode when I switch back and forth? I saw in the recent Proton GE there is this command `COPYPREFIX=1`. It says Steam auto applies -steamdeck when you enter Big Picture/Gamemode and I'm worried about everything getting moved or deleted. I'll provide a link below, I'm not quite sure I understand what is happening so I figured maybe someone else would have more insight. I'd appreciate any help.

Nouveau GSP Hardware Decode

Reddit Linux_Gaming - 8 May 2024 - 4:55am

* and Encode.

With all the excitement about NVK and Nova drivers, is there any news or plans for an implementation of open source hardware decoding for GSP enabled GPUs? If I have any chance of switching I'd need VAAPI implemented directly or Vulkan video with VAAPI implemented on top of it, and the ability to use that in OBS.

My prediction on our future

Reddit Linux_Gaming - 8 May 2024 - 4:41am

Mid 2024: Nvidia now properly work in wayland. A flock of Nvidia gamers migrate back to linux.

Mid 2025: Linux Desktop market share is now 15%. Valve continue to score with DXVK. WSL2 is dead, just like Android subsytem. Malware and bloatware, adware continue to wreck Windows users.

Mid 2026: Linux Desktop market share now 35%, games that don't have a native Linux client get review bombing on steam. Linux laptop with Arm64 cpu now become common & competitive, driving MacOS market share to below 10%

Thats it I cant predict further !

A linux support dev from a very popular game called Factorio has raised some concerns about Gnome's client-side window decorations

Reddit Linux_Gaming - 8 May 2024 - 3:45am

I am quoting a small section from the blog post :

"Once Wayland support was implemented, I received a bug report that the window was missing a titlebar and close buttons (called "window decorations") when running on GNOME. Most desktop environments will allow windows to supply their own decorations if they wish but will provide a default implementation on the server side as an alternative. GNOME, in their infinite wisdom, have decided that all clients must provide their own decorations, and if a client does not, they will simply be missing. I disagree with this decision; Factorio does not need to provide decorations on any other platform, nay, on any other desktop environment, but GNOME can (ab)use its popularity to force programs to conform to its idiosyncrasies or be left behind."

You can read more about it from here

What are your thoughts about this issue?
