Using proton on a windows game install
I am a huge fan of Linux and a huge hater of Microsoft but I'm still running windows on my daily machine because i play games like Forza Horizon 5, Overwatch 2, and a few more that don't have native Linux support. I was wondering if i could test the performance of these games on Linux via dual booting? Will i have to reinstall these games on Linux or will proton just read from the already existing Windows installations. I don't have a lot of SSD space to spare is all :P

What Audio server does gaming mode use? (SteamOS, Bazzite, ChimeraOS, ect)
(sorry if this is the wrong place for a question like this)
I have been having a weird issue with on every distro I've tried, where a certain Minecraft mod called "Sounds Physics Remastered" crashes on start up and leaves behind an OpenAL error in the stack overflow, however the exact same configuration but in gaming mode (Bazzite and SteamOS) works without issue.
I have no idea what makes one work and one not, but since it's an openAL error I assume it has something to do with the audio server and if so is there any way to bring it to the regular desktop (x11 or Wayland)?

vkBasalt SMAA use
Deus Ex Mankind Divided, D3D11; https://imgsli.com/MzEwNDcw
SMAA:SMAA:FXAA:CAS
I barely see any difference, it's almost as if vkBasalt isn't working. How do you configure AA solutions to remove jagged lines and such?

No sound in Steam Link, possible pulse audio permission issue?
I'm running steam on Ubuntu 22.04 presently with an AMD CPU. System audio is going via HDMI to the monitor. Everything works as expected when playing locally.
When connecting via steam link, no audio plays on the client. I have tried multiple clients. However, the host PC plays audio (even if I turn off the "play audio on host" setting) when a client is connected. This is true for games as well as for the UI sounds in Steam itself. Based on the following snippet from the log, I suspect this is some kind of permissions issue for steam and pulse, but I am not sure where to go next:
[2024-10-21 16:17:16][766.574141] Recording system audio [2024-10-21 16:17:16][766.574802] PulseAudio: Sink alsa_output.pci-0000_07_00.1.hdmi-stereo-extra1 is default [2024-10-21 16:17:16][766.574893] PulseAudio: Adding sink[1] alsa_output.pci-0000_07_00.6.iec958-stereo with priority 1, monitor is alsa_output.pci-0000_07_00.6.iec958-stereo.monitor [2024-10-21 16:17:16][766.574908] PulseAudio: Adding sink[2] alsa_output.pci-0000_07_00.1.hdmi-stereo-extra1 with priority 7, monitor is alsa_output.pci-0000_07_00.1.hdmi-stereo-extra1.monitor [2024-10-21 16:17:16][766.574915] PulseAudio: Recording on device alsa_output.pci-0000_07_00.1.hdmi-stereo-extra1.monitor [2024-10-21 16:17:16][766.574940] Audio mix: start=78234813244, returned=0 [2024-10-21 16:17:16][766.574947] Audio source [System Pulse]: init=0, adjustment=0, through=0, last_start=0, mixed=0, drop_before=0, drop_after=0 [2024-10-21 16:17:16][766.585064] PulseAudio: Stream failed: Access denied [2024-10-21 16:17:16][766.585098] Failed to get data from device: System Pulse. will return silence. While a client is connected, the host terminal throws "Failed to get data from device: System Pulse. will return silence." almost constantly.
I have also tried changing the system audio output to the headphone jack, trying with headphones plugged/unplugged, and there is no change in the behavior. Anyone able to get me pointed in the right direction for this one?
Also if there is a better subreddit to ask this question in, my apologies, my question seemed more like a linux-specific question than a steam-specific question.

Humble bundle
Is this humble book bundle worth it for someone who's just starting out on Linux?
I got a steam deck and am considering when I build my next PC since my PC is currently in need of an upgrade going full time on Linux or maybe dual booting
Thanks

Metro 2033 in Proton
Just got a PC with Nvidia card. Wanna run Linux but need advice.
Just as the title says. I want to ditch windows on my shiny new desktop. It's got a 4070 super if that matters. I tried running Bazzite but it was a stuttering glitchy mess. Even with the latest Nvidia drivers. Any advice on a good distro/DE/anything I might be missing here would be great! TIA

I've been fighting with gamescope now for a whole night and can't get it to run.... When I try to start a game Steam say "launching" for a few seconds to then just turn back to green "play" button.

AMD RX 5700XT
32Gb 3600Mhz DDR4
750W Gold Seasonic PSU
256Gb Nvme SSD boot drive

Trying to install minecraft launcher on linux chromebook.
I am trying to install minecraft on a linux chromebook. When I "install with linux", on the minecraft.deb file i get an error. The picture of the error is below. I think I am running 32-bit, which might be the reason why it isn't working. Also, I'm not sure, but I think I have an ARM based processor. I don't really know what that means though, because I am a beginner to all this. I tried to troubleshoot by typing sudo apt get install and then the file path to the app in linux terminal, but it says it can't find the file. Any help is appreciated, thanks!

Xbox Controller is not detected by steam or other programs but pairs no issue
Here is my Neofetch:
I am able to get my Xbox controller to connect with no issue, Steam does not show any contollers connected, and neither does hardwaretester.com or gamepadtest.com
I found this thread that had disabling secure boot as the fix but that did not fix the issue for me. Any ideas?

Where is Proton Windows's stuff directory?
I'm trying to mod MX Bikes, which is a game that basically runs through mods, but I can't seem to find the folder where the mods should be, which on Windows is Documents\PiBoSo

Pop!_OS - Sims 4 random crashes without any error
Hey everyone!
My girlfriend recently bought a new desktop and took delivery about a week ago. From the get-go shes been pretty clear that she doesn't want anything to do with Microsoft. I've been gaming on Linux for quite some time now, and suggested that we install Linux and see how the experience is for her - which she is fully onboard with. She has no prior Linux experience, so I installed Pop!_OS to keep it as smooth as possible.
Everything has been well, expect Sims 4. The game would randomly crash on loading between worlds (travel). The game would shutdown without any form of error message, and the EA client would become either unresponsive or super buggy. This can happen within an hour, but typically it's been between 1-6 hours of consecutive gaming.
Here is what I've tried:
- Install the EA client and then Sims 4 through Steam (non-steam game option).
- Using Proton experimental.
- Using Proton 9.0-3.
- Using Proton 8.0-5.
- Using Proton 7.0-6. (Wouldn't even boot the game)
- Install the EA client and Sims 4 through Lutris.
- Wine-ge-8-26-x86_64
- Force DirectX 9 in the ingame settings (crashing with both DirectX 11 and 9)
- With and WITHOUT mods (CC)
- Enable VKD3D (enabled and disabled)
- Resources looks fine, no excessive CPU, GPU or RAM usage.
- All drivers are up to date, including BIOS.
- Reinstalled OS (desperate times calls for desperate measures).
- I haven't been able to make her test other games, as she only plays Sims 4.
These are the hardware specs of the new PC, in case it's relevant:
- MB: Gigabyte B650 Eagle AX WIFI
- CPU: AMD Ryzen 5 9600X
- GPU: ASUS Radeon RX 7700 XT DUAL O12G
- RAM: Kingston Fury Beast 6000 MHz (32 GB)
- PSU: Hydro K PRO 850W
- NVME: Kingston NV2 2TB
I'm really at a loss here. What more can I do to troubleshoot?
