Do you recommend linux if you mostly do gaming and just want to switch for learning/get away from windows?

Reddit Linux_Gaming - 17 Sep 2024 - 4:15pm

Title.

I'm starting to get sick of MS and what is becoming of win 11. On top of all the AI garbage incoming. Interested in Linux for a long time mainly due to all the customization options. But I pretty much only do gaming on my PC so always was putting away switching.

Now since my main games have either native linux support or great wine/proton support ((ff14, factorio... I don't really play any AAA)) I want to give a linux more proper try.

Currently using A770 but changing for rx 7800 xt next week.

Gonna use Fedora since I'm not a fan of debian based distros and ideally I would like rolling release. But arch is bit to much for noob like me and OpenSUSE seems to not work great with my hardware. Fedora seems like decent middle ground.

Any thoughts? Does gaming on linux require a lot of tinkering or it is pain free. similar to windows after initial setup?

Rockstar official replied that they won't support SteamDeck (Linux)

Reddit Linux_Gaming - 17 Sep 2024 - 3:50pm

Just got an official response from Rockstar support about GTAO now working on Linux

We certainly understand that you are unable to login to GTA online through Steam Deck after the update.

We would like to inform you that the primary goal of incorporating BattlEye into GTA Online is to enhance the overall gaming experience by actively scanning for cheats and exploits, and preventing players with cheats and mods from entering online. The Steam Deck players will not be able to join GTA Online but should be able to launch single-player without any issues. We appreciate your understanding in this matter.

If you have any further questions or concerns, please feel free to let us know. We are here to assist you.

Since I got this reply just 5 minutes after posting, R* is well aware of the issue, if not intentionally. The response seems to be previously prepared and they also IP banned me from their support website.

Running Steam Games with Box64 + Wine + DXVK on ARM64

Reddit Linux_Gaming - 17 Sep 2024 - 3:37pm

I'm trying to run Steam games on my ARM64 device (NVIDIA Jetson AGX Xavier) using a combination of Box64, Wine, and DXVK. I've already set up Wine and DXVK on my system and have Box64/Box86 installed to handle the 64-bit/32-bit x86 emulation. Now, I'm interested in seeing how all these components work together to improve the gaming experience. I've made some optimizations to Box64 and DXVK myself and would like to see how these tweaks compare in terms of performance and compatibility when running games on Steam. However, I'm a bit confused about how to integrate everything smoothly. It seems like Box64/Box86 is primarily used to launch Steam itself, and then Steam has its own Proton layer that can be enabled for games. I'm not quite sure how to leverage Box64, Wine, and DXVK simultaneously to fully optimize the gaming experience.

Linux is pretty great, ngl

Reddit Linux_Gaming - 17 Sep 2024 - 2:17pm

Though this isn't a Linux gaming specific post, I just wanted to say my appreciation for Linux.

I gave a gaming PC running Windows 11 to my sister (because she's been gaming on an ancient 4th gen laptop with a 970m, and the PC is an 8700k with an RTX 2080 among other reasons) and built a PC using a Xeon 2670 and a GTX 1080 booting off a PCIE NVME card. Installed and setup Ubuntu with Plasma. The mobo on that PC died so I threw the NVME drive into an old laptop (9300H/1050 3gb) and it booted and just started working. The wifi, the GPU, the battery even.

There's a couple things that don't work, mainly it doesn't seem to recognize the lid is closed, and tapping the touchpad doesn't work (have to press it till it clicks). But's very impressive that it did almost nothing during the boot unlike Windows that takes 20 minutes and several reboots even on an NVME to boot up on new hardware, and it Just Works. I was honestly expecting a kernal panic or something.

Getting a new GPU and switching to Linux, any advice?

Reddit Linux_Gaming - 17 Sep 2024 - 2:16pm

I have ordered a Radeon RX 7800XT and I was planning on switching to Linux once I've installed it. I have been using Debian on my laptop for years and I have a Steam Deck, so I am used to using Linux and Proton.

I was planning on using Fedora or Bazzite as they have good driver support, although I am leaning towards Fedora as it seems to have less preinstalled software (please correct me if I'm wrong though).

I would also like to know how well features like HDR and variable refresh rate are supported, I'm going to use the plasma desktop environment.

The other thing I'm interested in is controlling my system fans and undervolting my GPU. On Windows I used Rem0o's fan control, are there any Linux alternatives to this?

Finally are there any other useful software or tools for gaming on Linux?

Moment of weakness

Reddit Linux_Gaming - 17 Sep 2024 - 1:25pm

I use Linux as a daily driver for around 2 years. Before I was dual-booting it for I guess 3-4 years. I have no complains on how games are working. I have every application I would want working. If something is Windows only most of the time I'm able to run it with wine.

However there is one thing that makes me want to go back to windows. It's AMD Fluid Motion Frames and Lossless scaling FG. It's really cool you can add frame gen to almost every game with those tools. And you can't do it on Linux. Only if game has built in FG support you can use it.

I wonder if it's worth it.

Has anyone fixed the issue of low GPU utilization with Wayland + Nvidia?

Reddit Linux_Gaming - 17 Sep 2024 - 12:24pm

I have been testing gaming under Wayland since driver 550 and I have always had the issue that the GPU utilization is only at around 70%. I tested 550, 555, 560 and I am now currently using 560.35.03. The issue has not gone away. On X11 everything works as expected with the GPU utilization always being around 100%. I thought this might have to do with GSP but enabling it had no effect. I tried changing desktop enviornments, Proton versions or kernels (6.8, 6.9, 6.10, 6.11) but nothing helped. This is the only thing that is preventing me from using Wayland full time so I am asking: has anyone ever solved this problem?

The affected games are for example CS2, RDR2, GTAV and my specs: Gnome 46, RTX 3070, no VRR

Best Gaming Laptops for Linux? (Considering Asus TUF Gaming A16 Advantage Edition)

Reddit Linux_Gaming - 17 Sep 2024 - 11:44am

Hey everyone,

I'm looking to buy a new gaming laptop and wanted to get some recommendations for ones that work well with Linux. I’ve done some research and I’m leaning towards the Asus TUF Gaming A16 Advantage Edition because it has AMD graphics, which I’ve heard tend to be better supported on Linux compared to NVIDIA.

However, I’ve come across some posts where people have mentioned issues with Linux detecting the discrete GPU (dGPU) on certain distributions, and that’s made me a little hesitant. I’m planning on using Bazzite OS, and I’m not sure if I should expect any problems with this particular laptop.

Has anyone here used the Asus TUF Gaming A16 with Bazzite OS (or another Linux distro)? If so, what’s your experience been like? Do you think it’s a good fit for Linux gaming? Also, if there’s a better option I should consider, I’d love to hear your recommendations! I’m looking for something that plays well with Linux and offers solid gaming performance.

Thanks in advance!
