Resident Evil 2 Remaster causing system hang in specific game area.
Proton Version : Proton-GE 10-28
I don't really know how to start a post like this. The gist is that everytime I get to the bottom waterway of the sewer and kill the 2 G-Creatures my system just hangs. Forcing me to restart my entire computer. journalctl tends to spit a different yet MES related error everytime.
EDIT : Felt the need to point out that I am using a 9000 series AMD GPU (9070 non xt). Since for what its worth they are still kind of new-ish and maybe have some stability issues with linux?

Help Choosing Distro for homemade Console
Hello I've been looking to refurbish my old Desktop to turn into a Console, just like SteamMachine aims to be, is there any distro better than SteamOS currently, the main purpose is Light Indie Games, Soulslike titles and some emulation.

Audio Crackling in Viva New Vegas Modpack on Proton 9.0‑4
I’m running Fallout: New Vegas modpack Viva New Vegas on Steam using Proton 9.0‑4 on Kubuntu 25.10. I’m experiencing audio crackling and popping during fights, heavy scenes, and slow-motion deaths. It’s especially noticeable when there’s a lot of gunfire, explosions, or other intense in-game sounds.

PartyDeck help? Instances are not starting.
Can anybody give me a step by step guide on using PartyDeck, specifically with the AppImage version of Super Mario 64 Coop Deluxe? I am so stumped by this. I have the correct handler, I have the files, so why won't it start? All I know is that "eframe app" won't start.

PSA: Proton crashes.
TLDR: Turn off iGPU in bios if u have dedicated GPU.
Over the course of the last 2 weeks i have been steadily losing my mind.
Had an ancient windows install on life support that i bastardized onto my new ultra 5 5070 build. All was well. Up until Counterstrike decided to just, close? Hm. maybe i fat fingered?
Whatever. boot again reconnect no problem. just 1 round lost.
2 Matches later another crash, HMMMMM?
Ok. well. whatever, start game, reconnect and finish match, head off to bed.
And so it began(again).
The unresolved crashes that have been pestering me up to the point of me buying a new pc has returned.(had a long line of bsod's on extremely random times on amd/amd platform)
But what the hell?
I have a new build the only single reused part is my NVMe.. it cant be. can it, am i that bad at maintaining a decent windows install... ive been doing this for 20 years..
Whatever. lets just roll linux and wipe the NVMe.. it is TIME.
So i nuke my NVMe, install POP!_OS, takes me a proper 20 min post install to get my audio sorted (i actually thought it would be harder)
Low and behold POP!_OS is easy.
I decide to download Marvel Rivals, new OS new game amirite?
I get Steam set up, rivals downloaded, and Proton is ready. LETS GOO.
Eight and a half minutes into my Marvel Rivals the game just hangs. No recovery. about 2 minutes later it closes the window and I'm staring at Cosmic's desktop.
WTF.
Well DXVK is probably the issue. Whatever I've heard of these, lets try different Proton.
To keep it short:
Tried the following:
Proton Hotfix, experimental, 10, 9, 8, 6...
Its not the proton is it?
try launching the game with a billion different launch options trying to convince the UE5 engine to not shoot itself in the face, no avail.
well shiiiiit.
At this point the negativity is setting in. my AMD rig was giving me the same grief. UNEXPLAINABLE CRASHES>>>
Not this time biiitch. I HAVE THE POWER OF ANIME AND LINUX ON MY SIDE.
Some research yields that 580 is in fact not the newest Nvidia driver, and to my surprise 590 is not supported by the kernel POP!_OS uses.
Arch time >_> (yes i did hurt myself, no I don't need medical, this is mental damage)
SO I nuke POP!_OS and install arch, I install kde plasma as desktop and get my shit setup again. Download steam, download Marvel Rivals, straight to Proton Experimental (Yielded longest playtime before crashing)
At least i have some 590 drivers now.... that should fix it right?
1 match clean, 2nd match crash. (Somebody please strike me in the head with a blunt object....)
I get quite upset at this point and proceed to sulk for 2 hours while cleaning my house.
Eventually I consult the mighty AI.....
No surprise it didn't know what the hell it was talking about.
Ill give it to ChatGPT 5.2 it raised some fair points. And it took me down many of the same paths as i myself looked at. but it wasn't before I begged it to start hypothesizing issues that I got results.
I got pointed to the possibility that it might be memory mapping issues. Que?
research time-> end result: idk what the fuck I'm looking at.
well whatevs. "MR LORD GPT, IF THAT IS THE CASE WHAT COULD BE THE CULPRIT"
And it goes:
"oh yeah bro, confirm rebar settings in bios"
Like. why would rebar be off??
*SIGH* Fine, I head over to bios. and its on.
But.. what's this?
iGPU on? -> toggle it.
Back in OS, I ask ChatGPT: bro.... CPU<->GPU memory mapping. Does the iGPU also do this? it uses system memory anyway right?
It hits me with "If the iGPU is fully disabled, then any shared address-space, display ownership, or DMA arbitration layer between i915 and NVIDIA collapses."
And I'm like... bro i dont speak french but that looks like a yes.
Cool, lets try it. and for the first time ever, I was able to complete more than 2 Matches in a row.
Moral of the story: if u dont need your iGPU turn it off. your 5070 has enough juice boys.
PS: i am not dumb i confirmed multiple times during troubleshooting (this was 2 weeks) that the Dedicated GPU was in fact the in use card. and iGPU was not being used for anything significant (mby desktop idk)

Gaming on linux
Can't really grasp how people say that gaming on linux is the best it's ever been. I kinda believe it, but my games say otherwise.
I've probably tried playing about 10 games, only 1 has worked long term.
Most of them don't even reach the "menu", some open with a black screen, no image, no sound. Some open already with a crash report.
Can someone explain to me, how the hell do you do it then?

Cheat Engine for Linux is in the works
Finally Windows last foot hold in gaming which is trainers is about to be opened. as for the anti cheat kernel level that most likely will never come I won’t count those. enough ppl switch and they loose players and cashshop revenue they will come off their high horse with those.

DayZ is killing my internet?
I bought Dayz yesterday and decided I wanted to join a community server. Here’s where the issues start.
When I try to join any it fails to connect then the server list disappears. I lose internet connection. When I try opening browser tabs it’s unable to make a connection. My phone then starts doing the same.
I tried different proton versions and settled with experimental but still my internet gets killed. I seemed to be able to join official servers ok though?
Overall a bizarre issue. I decided out of frustration to distro hop from Bazzite to Kubuntu to see if that’d fix it. Same issue occurs internet drops out when trying to search for or join community servers.
Anyone else had or getting this and what the cause may be?

I just released "Tiny Trek", a neo-retro 2D platformer with a built-in Level Editor! (Windows & Linux)
Hi everyone!
I've just released the stable version of Tiny Trek, a neo-retro 2D platform game that I'm developing on Windows and Linux.
The game focuses on adventure and creativity. I've just added some major features that I'm quite proud of:
🛠️ A complete level editor: The interface has been redesigned to be super intuitive (palette on the right, save tools, and quick test). You can create your own challenges!
📈 Progress tracking: I've implemented a statistics system that counts your deaths per level. Ideal for seeing your progress (or your suffering!).
🎮 Full Controller Support: The game is designed to be played with a controller for a classic platformer feel.
🌌 Refined atmosphere: I added mountain scenery with parallax and enemies with more personality (Slimes, Ghosts).
This is a passion project, and I would love to hear your feedback on the ergonomics of the editor or the difficulty of the levels.

Thanks to those who take the time to test it! 🚀

GOG should release GOG Galaxy in a universal packaging format (Flat/Appimage/etc)
Id rather avoid a fedora/obs situation when it comes to software sources.
Having galaxy release in a packaging format that works on all distros will make it easier for them to maintain/test. i dont really care what format they decide to do just aslong as it works for most linux users.
inb4 people say that GOG should just release galaxy for every format under the sun.

Audio Interface / Headset - Need assistance please (Multiple Output Required)
EA Launcher via Lutris keeps crashing - troubleshooting advice?
(advanced pc user, beginner Linux user; might need a more detailed explanation for stuff)
I've been trying to run the EA Launcher via Lutris but it works (very slowly) for 1-3 minutes but then it freezes and crashes. I've also tried running it through Bottles but i run into the same issue there.
Would be super grateful for any ideas on how to fix the issue!

Sims 2 Legacy Collection- Can't minimize?
Kubuntu 25.10, GE-proton10-25
Game runs fine, but can not minimize, or switch focus to another window, game pops back up.
Any idea which Proton version to use, or any specific changes to make the game minimizable?

Yet another audio crackling fix in GE-Proton10-30: WINEPULSE_FAST_POLLING env variable
How to use
Add this environment variable to Steam or game launcher of your choice:
WINEPULSE_FAST_POLLING=1Additionally increasing latency might be necessary, either by editing pipewire-pulse or pulseaudio config, or by using PULSE_LATENCY_MSEC. Setting latency above 40 ms (or quant ~512) should not ever be necessary now.
Explanation
There are cases when the RAM buffer is empty, the timer fires and wants to refill the audio server, finds nothing and goes to sleep, and the refill comes right after the timer goes to sleep. So, for instance, if the audio server had 6ms of data, the timer is asleep while we have 10ms of audio in our RAM, and that leads to an underflow. Fast polling resolves this problem by rechecking in 2ms instead and succesfully refilling the audio server. This is not the wine way because this is not how Windows behaves, but on practice games only care about how often the request for game audio is fired, which remains the same (once in every five ticks, so once in period).
Another issue is that we have two variables - held_bytes and pa_held_bytes. held_bytes is what we report to the game, pa_held_bytes is what we physically have in RAM. held_bytes runs on a fake clock, so if pa_held_bytes is lagging (audio server is slow) we end up with held_bytes below pa_held_bytes. This is a lie to the game which eventually also leads to crackles, because write and read pointers collide and the game overwrites existing audio. This issue, for instance, is commonly reported in ARC Raiders as a static buzz.
I introduced a throttling mechanism that does not let held_bytes dip below pa_held_bytes. Winealsa also works in a similar way so it doesn't have pointer collision issues.
Throttling held_bytes causes CI spatial audio tests to fail, but they also fail in the same way with winealsa. This is related to the fact that the hardware is virtual so pa_held_bytes is never moved to the audio server and only grows, while the tests expect held_bytes to keep dropping. Tests do not fail locally and it is impossible to avoid eventual pointer collisions if the audio server is slow and there is no throttling, so the tests are flawed in that sense.
Increasing polling is admittedly a bit hacky, but in my extensive testing it never broke any game. Please let me know if something weird is going on (like buzzing or audio hanging).
Also I really am not sure how winealsa works so well without increased polling, my assumption is that this is related to tlength (total server buffer) to period ratio which is 3.75:1 in winealsa and 2.5:1-3:1 in winepulse. Increasing the ratio is not as obvious as it sounds because even if you change the numbers in the source code it still rounds them up to only 3:1 and increases quant instead. If there are any programmers who can figure this out, please also let me know!

I can't open the Minecraft Laucher
It's what it says on the tin: It doesn't open.
Context: I'm running Debian using a virtual machine on an Acer Chromebook Plus.
I downloaded the Minecraft.deb file from the official website, moved the file to the virtual machine, and then installed it. The Minecraft Launcher application appeared in my Linux apps, but interacting with it only opened up an update window that then dissapeared. Subsequent attempts to launch the program do nothing. Any fixes? Or is what I'm trying to do just impossible on my hardware?
