Hello, I need some help with overclocking my GPU.

Reddit Linux_Gaming - 07. Januar 2026 - 07:48

I've been using Linux for more than 3 years now, and have never really optimized my system, since it can handle almost everything I do (most of the time), but eversince I upgraded my GPU, PSU, and RAM this year: RTX 2070 to RTX 5070TI, 32GB to 64GB RAM, and 750W to 850W PSU, I got curious about it.

However, I'm quite confused about how to OC.

On Microslop Binbows, there is MSI Afterburner that has both the OC and benchmark tool, which can also tell you about how "good" your OC setting is after some benchmark tests by telling you its "confidence" level.

It's pretty much a no-brainer. Just set your desired OC, then run the benchmark. If it fails, lower it a little. If it didn't, increase it.

On Linux, I use LACT.

Not really sure what's a good starting point, so, if you have any tips or have the same card, please do share.

Also, the main reason why I didn't switch to RADEON, even though I really wanted to, was because of the lack of resources about how well an AMD GPU perform on Davinci Resolve (on my search, atleast). I chose an NVIDIA GPU because I already know that it works well with it.

Thanks in advance!

Installing .NET Desktop Runtime for Non-Steam Games

Reddit Linux_Gaming - 07. Januar 2026 - 07:35

TLDR:

  1. Add the Game to Steam as a Non-Steam Game and launch it once
  2. Download the .exe installer for the .net version that the game asks for when failing to start (The error message usually has a link to do this)
  3. Install Protontricks
  4. Open the .exe with Protontricks (On KDE Plasma right-click the .exe and open with Protontricks)
  5. It will ask you for which Proton profile (game) do you want to install it, select the game from step 1.
  6. The .NET installer should open, follow the installation process like any other Windows software.
  7. When it finishes the game should launch

Explanation so it can be found by people with the same problem

I've been looking for hours how to do this, everyone seems to just disregard the question online as the app/game usually has the .NET runtime bundled in by default, which is clearly not always the case. I was trying to run PKHeX trough Proton but it would fail with a message asking for the runtime.

I hope this helps someone in a similar situation!

Help with Modding Games and Anti-Cheat Software.

Reddit Linux_Gaming - 07. Januar 2026 - 06:43

I have been playing on XBox for 20 years, and am finally jumping ship (Way too late). My current system is still the old, original XBox One that shipped with the release of Fallout 4.

Depending on Steam Machine pricing, I am looking to move into PC Gaming by either building a rig or going off of Valve's new GabeCube (This is not a debate on build choices, I just want to play my basic games without paying $2K or a $30 a month subscription).

However, I have concerns with playing some games that use Anticheat Software (EAC in particular) while also having the freedom to Mod Games and do what I want with the system.

Right now, it seems like one of the best things I can do for myself is to dual-boot my perspective system when it comes, and having one boot dedicated to mods, and the other dedicated to Clean/Online games (Though I frankly know nothing about if this would even work, either).

My main questions are this:

  • Can I dual-boot two instances of SteamOS and have it work in this configuration? I want to avoid Windows as much as possible, and would like to stick to what I see with the SteamOS Software.

  • Are there any other considerations I should have for protecting myself from Online Games while Modding Singleplayer?

  • Some Games (Ex: 7 Days to Die) seem to have EAC, but they can be toggled off on Steam for offline only. What is the difference between disabling it in the Files, and Disabling it in the Launcher?

  • Some games (Ex: Older Call of Duty (Bo3 and earlier) seem to have their own Anticheats. Will these have issues with other Anticheats (Like EAC) in different games, if caught modding?

The games I am looking to primarily do are:

Clean/Online: - Dead by Daylight (My biggest concern).

Modded: - Fallout 4. - Cyberpunk 2077. - OG Call of Duty (BO3 Zombies and Prior, Custom Maps and the like). - 7 Days to Die (With EAC turned off, of course. I only intend for this to be a Zombie Survival Sandbox game for me).

I have other games I am looking to get into (Ready or Not, Project Zomboid, etc.), that would fit into these categories as I decide to go about them.

Thanks for any help!

Steam Big Picture Mode Low Framerate Lag (FIXED)

Reddit Linux_Gaming - 07. Januar 2026 - 06:26

This is an archival post. If this doesn't apply to you ignore it and move along please. I don't need all the snarky "Why are you posting this?" comments.

January 2026 - Linux Mint 22.2 Cinnamon

No clue how this worked but if anyone has issues with Steam BPM Lagging try this:

Launch Steam Big Picture Mode.

Go to settings (struggle through the lag if it's bad for you)

Enable windowed mode, (aka turn off fullscreen). You shouldn't have any lag anymore. At least I didn't.

Do NOT maximize the window, for whatever reason if you do it glitches out Chromium (which Steam BPM runs off) and you will lag again.

Fully exit steam. Full shutdown, NOT minimize to tray.

Run this command in the terminal: steam -bigpicture

Disable windowed mode in settings once steam bpm launches and it should stay not-laggy.

Enjoy

Bad news: you will need to run the command every time. So make a .sh file to launch from to make it easier. But in my opinion I like it better that way because it will go straight to BPM instead of regular steam without needing the setting turned on if you don't want it on... which I don't.

PS: I have Gpu Acceleration on and turned off the GPU Blocklist. That might have something to do with it too.

AMD Drivers crash on some DX12 games?

Reddit Linux_Gaming - 07. Januar 2026 - 06:24

I noticed on my RX 5700 XT few games are causing the ring gfx driver time out which freezes my screen while I can still hear the audio from the game, sometimes it resets but sometimes I have to manually reboot the PC. It happens in Witcher 3 only on DX12 after 5-30 min playtime, while on DX11 it runs flawlessly. Also I use Shadow of the tomb raider demo just for benchmarking and it does not have Linux native support like the full game, and my driver crashes in the main menu always on DX12, on DX11 I have no issues. If I limit the frames to 120 in SOTR for example it does not crash in the main menu on DX12. I first thought it is something wrong with my GPU and I tried those games on Windows but did not have any problems there, so it is something with the Linux Drivers. Anyone else is experiencing the same with other AMD cards (RDNA 2,3 and 4) or is it just RDNA 1 issue?

Really noisy ray tracing - normal or linux related?

Reddit Linux_Gaming - 07. Januar 2026 - 06:02

Currently trying out Spider Man Remastered...

The raytracing is really bad, noisy and looks glitchy as well. But it's not the first time i encountered this, it was also extremely noisy and grainy in Robocob too, and Cyberpunk (to a much lesser extent).

The performance is good, it just looks like ass. No upscaling, everything on maximum.

Does this have something to do with linux or is ray tracing just that bad in games?

Something overwrites my power settings on CachyOS

Reddit Linux_Gaming - 07. Januar 2026 - 06:02

I am using a laptop where I limited my cpu's power setting to reduce temps. But if I start a certain game it gets overwrited and my cpu is at max frequency again. Can anyone help me what could overwrite it? The game where I noticed this is Hunt: Showdown. I set the limit with an app called cpupower-gui. My laptop is an ASUS TUF A15 with an AMD Ryzen 5 7535HS and RTX 4050. Thanks in advance!

Request for distro recommendation for someone who what to play and write codes.

Reddit Linux_Gaming - 07. Januar 2026 - 05:50

Hello everyone,

I'm planning to switch from Windows to Linux for my gaming desktop. I'm considering either Nobara or CachyOS, but I occasionally need to use VS Code and R Studio for work. I'm not very familiar with how these applications perform on those distributions. If anyone here does coding, I would appreciate your insights on this. Would it be better for me to go with something like Ubuntu or Mint instead?

Thank you in advance!

New year / new OS (New PC)

Reddit Linux_Gaming - 07. Januar 2026 - 04:33

Nothing really worth bragging about, but a pretty big deal for me. 9800x3D on a X870E board w/ 9070 XT. Choose the parts with Linux gaming in mind.

I'm trying to decide between Zorrin and CachyOS. As a three decade plus windows user, Zorrin is right up my alley, everything still makes sense in the GUI. I've got CachyOS installed at the moment though.

Can anyone recommend some gaming / performance benchmark tools? I've run shadow of the tomb raider cyberpunk 2077, I want to run some more and then switch to Zorrin, see if the tweaks in cachyos are worth the extra setup work for a noob like myself.

Also, why the f can't I get openrgb to work? I can't get the udev script to install, so I can't control my pretty fans lol.

Distro With Most Complete Steering Wheel Support

Reddit Linux_Gaming - 07. Januar 2026 - 03:55

Been distro-hopping for a bit, landed on Kubuntu for months at one point in time, it was great, and then a Mesa update was pushed that broke everything on my system, so I had to nuke and pave. Installed CachyOS and it's just been constant unwavering issues. Audio cracking and stuff that is caused by my USB PnP microphone somehow that persists through reinstalls, and also occurs on EndeavourOS, it's just been a mess.

In addition to this, I have a Logitech G920, and I am looking for a distro with solid support for that wheel. There is a driver for it built into the kernel, but it's a bit funky. The pedals do not read like they should, and there is a deathwobble when idling. I'm hoping that there might be a distro with additions to the kernel driver that might make the wheel a bit more seamless to use.

If I really have to dual boot for racing, that's fine, because basically every other game I play works without a hitch on Linux, sim racing is just frustrating, as I'm at a constant disadvantage. I have spent probably 10 or 12 hours troubleshooting this stupid audio issue, and I cannot fix it for the life of me. Between AI, forums, etc.. (Thanks CachyOS community for absolutely nothing) I have not been able to solve this issue, and I'm really not sure I understand what is causing it, other than the completely elementary idea that "my microphone is causing my audio to crack and games to lag when it's plugged in".

As such, I am really looking to solve two issues here: steering wheel functionality and audio issues. I've been looking at Pop!_OS, as I used it way way back when it first released, but now that they're all caught up in Cosmic, I have no idea what to expect from that distro, but I see it commonly in this subreddit. I also used Nobara, back when it first came to popularity more than a few years back, and I know it's in decent shape nowadays.

I prefer KDE for its customizability, but I'm starting to lean in towards heavily customized GNOME, so I could really do either.

Thanks for reading! Any thoughts?

The last of us ll crash on cachyos

Reddit Linux_Gaming - 07. Januar 2026 - 03:37

Hi, I switched to CachyOS a couple of days ago and I've been testing games on Steam, and this one in particular is the only one that crashes. It lets me open the game, play for about 2-3 minutes, and then it crashes. I've tried Proton Experimental, the GE version, the native version, and the Linux runtime version. Does anyone know why this might be happening?

Unofficial Minecraft Bedrock Launcher conundrum

Reddit Linux_Gaming - 07. Januar 2026 - 03:06

Hey folks. Im a newish Linux user. Recently made to full switch from windows. Been playing Minecraft Bedrock just fine with no issues until today. Went to play and the *NIX launcher gave me some mod to install. No name just "mod 0.0.2". I installed it and instantly had issues. It restarted the launcher, logged in like usual, and then the game would crash back into the launcher debug dialog screen saying it crashed due to "unix signal number 6". No amount of searching for this specific error in conjunction with the unofficial launcher gave me any help or hints towards fixing the issue. So i uninstalled the launcher, restarted my computer and reinstalled the launcher. Now it just brings up the update dialog box and when i click confirm, it just shuts down. I tried running it thru Terminal, "sudo flatpak run io.mrarm.mcpelauncher -v", to see if it gave any details and no such luck. I also tried denying Wayland and forcing X11 and again no luck. If it helps i installed Linux Mint on my old gaming system as i got tired of it just sitting and not being used. Currently running Asus Crosshair V Formula - Z, FX-9370 cpu, EVGA GeForce GTX960 (2GB edition), 32GB DDR3 ram. The nVidia driver its running is the recommended 535.274.02, and the only other program i have on here is Plithos for music streaming. I have run update and upgrade several time, as well as the flatpak update.

Any help is greatly appreciated.

DLSS 4.5 (Preset M) Quality Worse Performance Than No DLSS

Reddit Linux_Gaming - 07. Januar 2026 - 02:11

FYI: With Diablo 4, testing with the new DLSS 4.5 Preset M at Quality gives worse performance than turning DLSS off.

  • CachyOS
  • 5090
  • PROTON_DLSS_UPGRADE=1 mangohud game-performance %command%

Lose about 10 FPS with DLSS Quality compared to DLSS Off. Also, I am seeing increased power usage with DLSS 4.5 Preset M vs DLSS off / DLSS Preset K

Edit 1:

Some quick "tests" of standing in town. DLSS 4.5 Preset M Quality performs worse than with DLSS off

  • DLSS Off, 4k
    • ~235 fps
  • DLSS 4 Preset K. Resolution 4k
    • Quality: ~265 fps
    • Balanced: ~285 fps
    • Performance: ~318 fps
    • Ultra Performance: ~393 fps
  • DLSS 4.5 Preset M. Resolution 4k
    • Quality: ~220 fps
    • Balanced: ~245 fps
    • Performance: ~284 fps
    • Ultra Performance: ~359 fps

Additionally, I am seeing increased power draw on the card in LACT when using DLSS 4.5 Preset M Quality compared to DLSS 4 Preset K Quality and DLSS Off.
