Protón GE 10 video decoding

Reddit Linux_Gaming - 19. Mai 2025 - 18:20

I started playing RE7 yesterday, and found out that videos didn't work. So I switched to Proton GE and videos still didn't work.

Then, I tried a earlier version of Proton GE (9-27) and videos worked correctly.

Is there something different with the Proton GE 10 release?

Fix(es) for games not launching on Steam with Proton

Reddit Linux_Gaming - 19. Mai 2025 - 17:40

(not my video, taken from post: \"Proton refuses to launch games\" by u/Tough_Chance_5541)

I've seen and attempted tens of fixes for this issue, and the result of all of them is probably reduced performance and future conflicts, if anything. This is a solution I have seen no one mention before.

I dualboot Windows with Linux Mint and have had numerous issues with Steam using both NTFS and exFAT on my games hard drive, which led me to reformat to ext4 for that native support. In the process, I have been moving all of my games (about 4TB total) between my hard drive and an external drive to save time and WiFi. Originally, I copied just the /steamapps/common folder, but the games wouldn't show up so I copied the whole SteamLibrary folder and they showed up. Native games worked fine and a few specific Proton games worked too. This was an error.

Solution: Simply, copying the whole SteamLibrary or even steamapps folder from Windows is a mistake. The files included are for Windows only. ONLY COPY the common folder and all of the appmanifest.acf files from steamapps. Put them elsewhere and let Steam make its own library folder, then copy them over and merge the folders.

In hindsight, this is rather obvious and I ended up figuring it out on my own. The reason I'm making this post is because I spent a few nights troubleshooting and heard every shot-in-the-dark solution except this one, and it would have saved me hours if this post existed for me. I'm sure others will have this same problem, in fact I've seen it in forums all over the internet (I thought to try this because of a Factorio forum post), especially because most people coming from Windows with large libraries will likely make the same error.

Games didn't work from the start for me. Many people have instead reported this issue happening at random after games were already working; below are all of the solutions I have seen mentioned, in no particular order.

Other fixes:

  • Clear download cache
  • sudo apt update & upgrade
  • Test all versions of Proton
  • Disable Steam overlay
  • steam --reset
  • Install/reinstall Vulkan and AMD drivers
  • Enabling 32-bit support
  • chown games drive
  • Delete compatdata folder and restart Steam
  • Downloading mesa drivers (including one set of third party drivers)
  • Reinstall Steam from your distro's repo, Flathub, and official .deb, never the snap version (fyi clean reinstall requires uninstall, then purge, then rm remaining local files/folders)
  • Running games in Lutris
  • Give Flatpak permissions via Flatseal (avoid "filesystem=host" and "filesystem=home," add necessary drives/folders in "Other files")
  • Installing wine and proton-GE
  • Running in Wayland
  • Symlinking in ~/.local/share/Steam
  • Reading through logs of running Steam in terminal as well as PROTON_LOG=1 %command% (many, many red herrings)
  • Reformatting: NTFS is bad, exFAT is less bad, ext4 is best
  • Reinstall linux
  • Convert to Islam
  • just waiting
  • magic

Search engines are getting worse, so OpenWebSearch funded by the European Union want to fix it

Gaming on Linux - 19. Mai 2025 - 16:15
Not gaming news but an important subject to cover anyway since it's something that affects me and GamingOnLinux directly, as well as all of you who regularly use a search engine. The OpenWebSearch might be one way to save us all.

Counterstrike Doesn't Launch

Reddit Linux_Gaming - 19. Mai 2025 - 15:37

When launching the latest version of Counter-Strike 2 using linux native, the game will attempt to open, but crash before loading the GUI. When running it through proton, the game will start up just fine, but I get a VAC error despite not having modified the game. It worked fine in linux native yesterday morning, but started having issues when I ran it again in the evening. I've not changed anything between game launches.I'm scratching my head with this, trying to figure out what's up.

I am running Arch on Sway WM, have 2 monitors, (ultrawide @2560x1080/144 and a vertical @1080x1920/144) with an Nvidia GPU, and AMD CPU. All drivers and software are fully up to date, including through Pacman, the AUR, and FlatPak.

I will post logs when I get home.

Genshin Impact (part999)

Reddit Linux_Gaming - 19. Mai 2025 - 15:36

Good day to yall. This is ANOTHER Genshin Impact post lol, sorry about that.

My sister is playing Genshin in the PC and I recently changed the PC to Linux from Windows.

So ChatGPT is suggesting to get it with Wine or "Anime Launcher". Some YouTubers reccoment "Heroic" launcher instead.

I tried Heroic launcher first, it was the third worse experience I had in PC.

Moved to Anime launcher and for some reason I couldnt get the game to start.

At the end I tried wine and lutris to launch HoYo and start the game. But the game was really laggy compared to the Windows experience.

After plenty of mistakes I reset my PC and I start again. I would like to hear experiences on the matter and suggestions of how to move forward and what road to choose so my sister can have a good experience with the game again.

Note: I can retry some of the stuff I already did, if I hear that they are worth it.

Speedrunning on Linux

Reddit Linux_Gaming - 19. Mai 2025 - 15:26

Has speedrunning on Linux improved at all? Is there any good tools I can use (especially when i use a ps4 controller) for the timer and splits and whatnot? I tried last time a few years ago and it was a huge headache to get anything working, so I'm wondering if theres any new tools and whatnot that would let me speedrun without problem on Linux?

Question regarding on-board mouse profiles with a non-Linux compatible mouse

Reddit Linux_Gaming - 19. Mai 2025 - 15:13

Going to switch to Linux soon. (First timer here.)

From what I gathered, my mouse (Roccat Kone XP Air) isn't supported by Piper or Eruption.

Here's my question: assuming I set up different profiles in Windows and save them as on-board profiles, will they still work in Linux? I would also set the profile switch action to one of the buttons.

The profiles and key bindings should be saved on the on-board memory, but I wonder if they will still be detected under Linux.

If anyone has any experience with a similar setup, please let me know. Any help or insight is appreciated in advance!
