EA Anti Cheat coming to EA WRC

Reddit Linux_Gaming - 17. Mai 2024 - 21:00

According to an EA announcement from a few hours ago, EA anti cheat will be patched into the game with the upcoming 1.9 patch, more than half a year after the launch of the game.

The announcement also contains a section of how Windows was always given as the only supported platform in the system requirements, that it won't work on SteamOS and that the Steam Deck status was always "unsupported". So it's pretty certain that the game will no longer work on Linux once the patch drops in June.

Well, doesn't change the fact that it ran perfectly well on my machine and that it has a ProtonDB rating of Platinum. What a weird decision. This game does not really have a ton of players, it's only a small, tight community. But EA's gonna EA I guess.

Switch from Steam Deck LCD to Legion Go + BazziteOS: Need advice and user experiences

Reddit Linux_Gaming - 17. Mai 2024 - 20:50

Hello!

I’m planning to sell my Steam Deck LCD and buy a Lenovo Legion Go. I’ve loved my Steam Deck since day one, and it’s the best purchase I’ve ever made. However, I struggle to adapt to anything under 40 frames per second. I’m not sure why, but ever since I first experienced gaming at 60fps on a 60Hz monitor, my preference has shifted dramatically. Now, all my devices must support at least a 120Hz refresh rate. It’s become challenging for me to revert to the days of console gaming or 30Hz displays. I wish it weren’t the case, but it’s a burden I must bear. I hope some of you can relate to this.

I understand that the Legion Go won’t achieve 60fps in all titles, but I expect it to be more stable and encounter fewer low refresh rate problems. Initially, I was skeptical about buying the Legion Go. I had considered the Steam Deck OLED, but it didn’t seem like a much better option in terms of refresh rate. It only offered a better display, slightly better performance, and longer battery life.

I was unsure about the operating system as well. I didn’t want Windows on a handheld device. I wanted a console experience, not a laptop. But when I heard about BazziteOS and its positive reviews, I was convinced. The detachable controls and mouse in FPS mode also seemed interesting for Nintendo games or gyro games where I don’t want the display moving with me.

I’ve decided to get the Legion Go only if I can upgrade the hard drive to a 2TB SSD (Timetec M.2 SSD NVMe PCIe Gen 4x4 2230 with an extender) and install BazziteOS and Windows with dual booting. This way, I can play Xbox Game Pass games, Riot Games, and those particular Easy Anti-Cheat games that won’t work on Proton.

At the moment, I’m concerned about battery life. I’ve read that it’s going to be worse than the Steam Deck LCD, despite the bigger battery (40Wh vs 49.2Wh), even when using only BazziteOS. This is because the Legion Go has a better display and is a more powerful device. And yes, if I change the SSD, it’s probably going to drain the battery a bit faster, but I don’t think that will make a considerable difference.

I have a few questions for those who have experience with this specific upgrade (SD LCD -> Legion Go + BazziteOS):

  1. Performance Comparison: Could anyone provide a comparison of the gaming performance between the Steam Deck LCD and the Lenovo Legion Go? This includes frame rates, load times, and overall smoothness of gameplay.
  2. Operating System: I’m interested in personal experiences with BazziteOS on the Legion Go, especially in comparison to the Steam Deck’s operating system.
  3. Hardware Upgrade: Does anyone have experiences or tips regarding upgrading the hard drive to a 2TB SSD (Timetec M.2 SSD NVMe PCIe Gen 4x4 2230)?
  4. Battery Life: As I said, I’m concerned about the battery life of the Legion Go, especially in comparison to the Steam Deck LCD. Any tips to optimize battery life on the Legion Go?
  5. Community Feedback: Are there any known issues or common complaints about the Legion Go that I should be aware of before making my purchase?
  6. Personal Experiences: I would love to hear from users who have made a similar switch. Your insights could be very valuable.

I was wondering, if I set the TDP and GPU clock so that the performance on the Legion Go is exactly like on the Deck in some games, shouldn’t it last at least about the same time as the SD LCD, given the “same” OS and a bigger battery? I know the display and resolution are bigger, but resolution is also tweakable. Wouldn’t the bigger battery compensate for it a bit?

Thank you so much!

issues with bluetooth controller

Reddit Linux_Gaming - 17. Mai 2024 - 20:46

i'm having a bunch of headaches while using a 8bitdo M30 bluetooth controller on linux, and i don't even know where the issue might be. before anything i'm on linux mint 21.3 on 6.5.0 kernel(had to update it over what mint comes with because tekken 8 online wouldn't work with 5.15)

first, mint always detect the controller soon as i turn it on. and on retroarch set to udev input driver the controller works perfectly. sometimes i need to turn it off and turn it back on while retroarch is open. but always works. on windows i also never had any issues either. so i don't think the controller is at fault here

but with games on steam things are weird. first i usually need to use steam input because the m30 shows up as a xbox controller, but they decided to have the shoulder buttons as L1 and L2 rather than R1 and R2, which means i need to remap them.

now on configuration screens of steam input takes a while to detect the controller, a good while. from ~10 seconds to more, but it always find it eventualy. and i can browse the steam input menus with the controller with no issue after that.

so if the steam input configuration finds the controller you would think that it would work in the game as well. but not really.

every game behaves differently, some will never find it, some find it after while, some require to close the game and opening it again, some turning the controller on and off... sometimes all of that multiple times till it works somehow. its a mess and it is very annoying

and some games won't work with the controller at all!

turning steam input on and off seems to not change anything either. however after the controller is found by the game it always works, i never had disconnects or it being not configured.

while that, i also have a original xbone one bluetooth controller here and a gamesir xbox one wire controller as well. the original one on bluetooth is a bit iffy, but is a lot less troublesome than the 8bitdo. a LOT less. while the wired gamesir made me install xone drivers for it to work. but after it the controller always work with no issues ever.

is only the M30 that is giving me all this trouble. and i have no idea where the issue might be. so any pointers to what might be going on is welcomed

Best version of proton for apex currently?

Reddit Linux_Gaming - 17. Mai 2024 - 19:51

Having lots of lag and stutter during the kill cam. I’ve removed all charms, but the enemies charms or banner is still causing issues.

Also seems like the shaders for skins have to reload every time I load the game, they always appear as grey models for the first few seconds.

I’m using proton hotfix currently. Wondering if there’s a better version?

Ghost of Tsushima Pop-In

Reddit Linux_Gaming - 17. Mai 2024 - 18:58

Has anyone else on Linux been experiencing extremely bad pop-in while playing Ghost of Tsushima? I made a comment on the Github page for Proton compatibility issues, but it seems like no one else has had the same issues.

I'm running Fedora Silverblue 40, using the latest Flatpak Mesa drivers (v24.0.6), kernel 6.8.9, and running an AMD 7900 XTX and 7900X3D. I have massive amounts of pop-in to the point where it's detrimental to the playing experience because fences have collision but can be invisible right in front of me. Any suggestions would be extremely helpful.

Here are a few videos I uploaded to Streamable to showcase the issue:

Starcraft II - game crashes within a minute after a round starts

Reddit Linux_Gaming - 17. Mai 2024 - 18:27

hi folks,

i've been playing SC2 using lutris without any issues for years now. since a few days the game completely crashes immediately after loading the map or within the first minute of playing.

i've tried to re-install lutris, battlenet, sc2, update my system+drivers, and tested different proton versions.

however, none of my actions did cause any change to the problem. also i couldn't find anyone online with the same problem. on a dual-boot windows i can play just fine, so it's probably not a hardware issue.

is anyone facing the same issue or can give me some tips on how to debug this?

i can't find anything helpful in the log, but maybe the experts here can: https://pastebin.com/cjhiYT6b

Looking for a specific Linux RTS from over 10 years ago

Reddit Linux_Gaming - 17. Mai 2024 - 18:26

Hi Friends, hoping someone here can help me out. I'm trying to remember the title of a game that was very similar to Age of Empires. It was free and open-source. It allowed you to build your civilization from the stone-age all the way to the nuclear age and beyond. Pretty much the same mechanics as AoE but the combat was amazing. Especially when you got to the industrial age and were able to start building nuclear subs, aircraft carriers, and planes. The technology development tree was also really interesting with lots of trade-offs and strategy.

I loved that game so much but I can't remember what it was called for the life of me. Any ideas?

I think I can finally switch to Linux (probably)

Reddit Linux_Gaming - 17. Mai 2024 - 17:33

Currently using X11 on Nvidia until the explicit sync driver drops, then switching to Wayland. I have to use an autorandr alias to disable my other monitors when gaming to use VRR. X11 without the compositor is not very pretty either...

It feels really good to finally switch but there is still some uncertainty:

  • Whether 555/560 will even fix multi-monitor VRR
  • Whether 555/560 or beyond will add Nvidia frame gen support
  • Whether 555/560 or beyond will add RTX HDR support (Not super important, but nice to have for sure)
  • Questionable VR Support
  • Modding older games? (Example: Skyrim, Fallout)

I will update if I think of any more things, but I am very please with how short this list is compared to what it would have been a few years ago.

fps feels much lower than 60

Reddit Linux_Gaming - 17. Mai 2024 - 16:17

Fedora KDE with RX 6800 and R5 3600x

in multiple games when i lock my fps to 60fps it feels more like 30fps - Examples of this being days gone (both using in game fps limiter and mangohud), the witcher 3 and fallout 4 this isnt much of an issue in the days gone and the witcher 3 as i just set to 90fps and have no issues however fallout 4 the engine has issues when going above 60fps

I do have a 144hz monitor and have disabled adaptive sync as the lower i set my fps the more the screen began to flicker in game has anyone else had similar experiences and if so have you been able to solve them?
