Proton won't download: "Disk write error"

Reddit Linux_Gaming - 30 Jun 2025 - 11:33am

Hello everyone, as the title says i couldn't manage to install proton experimental (i couldn't download any version of proton in general) on my system (Linux Mint 22.1 xia). When I tried to download the package from Steam it just seemed to download some files but in the end it always gave me a "Disk write error".

Here's an example of error I receive when trying to launch a game (fallout 4): "Disk write error - /media/myusername/myssd/SteamLibrary/steamapps/downloading/1493710/files/lib/i386-linux-gnu/libdav1d.so

If someone is willing to help me I would really appreciate that. Thank you in advice.

Vulkan shaders and switching DE (or display servers)?

Reddit Linux_Gaming - 30 Jun 2025 - 10:44am

Hi!

I wanted to test which games that would boot better on different DE's. I started No man's sky on cosmic (wayland) and it processed vulkan shaders for like 3 seconds. Then I tried on gnome Xorg and it seems to process 1%/minute. So... will switching DE result in this or is there another explanation? (other games have processed really slow on cosmic so I'm not advocating that cosmic is better at this)

Assassin's Creed Odyssey long time to launch shows black box first

Reddit Linux_Gaming - 30 Jun 2025 - 10:21am

Hello everyone,

As the title suggests I've been having this issue for the past few weeks now where I install ubisoft connect trash launcher through (tried heroic, lutris, bottles and non steam game) and it always takes 10-15 minutes to launch while looking at the splash screen. I tried a lot of things like changing a shit ton of distributions, re-installing my Nvidia drivers, proton ge, wine ge etc etc nothing seems to work. Is there any hero here who has managed to fix this issue? Ubisoft support won't be able to help with this since this game is not supported on Linux.

Any hero here that could be able to help me?

Microsoft is clossing kernel to antivirus, will the same happen with kernel anticheats?

Reddit Linux_Gaming - 30 Jun 2025 - 9:20am

After what happened with CrowdStrike, it seems Microsoft is determined to close its kernel to antivirus software, although it doesn't mention anything about anti-cheat software. That's why I'm wondering: Do you think it's possible that something like macOS could happen, where they won't allow any kernel-level installations?

If this happen, I imagine that video game companies would have to do away with these anti-cheats, and these games could be played on Linux. I was overjoyed just thinking I could uninstall Windows forever. What do you think?

Nitro 5 worst performances on Linux

Reddit Linux_Gaming - 30 Jun 2025 - 8:52am

Hi,

I've always been dual booting on my laptops, one Linux drive for personal activities, and one windows drive for gaming.

I could see, the past few years, Linux getting more and more on par with windows, even better at times.

A couple of times a year I would make a fresh install of my favorite desktop distro (fedora) and see how close it's getting to my windows install.

Which brings us to a couple weeks ago. Fresh install of Fedora Silvervlue, steam, proton-ge and begin comparison.

Underwhelming. I mean I expected near native performances from all the videos / articles you can find googling around, or maybe a 5/10% loss. Not 30% less frames per seconds...

For reference on windows I would get 60-80fps average on games like masseffect legendary modded, battlefront 2, tomb raider 2013, etc... On Linux 30-50fps average...

To see if it was a software issue I've spent the last few days distro-hopping: plain Debian, fedora silverblue, nobara, bazzite, manjaro. No changes...

Is my hardware at fault? I thought all AMD system should play nice with Linux.

If anyone have a idea, or if I'm not alone, please chime in!

Thanks,

Specs:

Acer Nitro 5 AN515-42
Ryzen 5 2500u
AMD RX 560X 4GB
16GB ram
2 1to ssd
Screen oc'd at 100hz
Graphics oc at 1352/1550

Increasing Display Saturation/Vibrance

Reddit Linux_Gaming - 30 Jun 2025 - 8:03am

Hello, I was wondering if theirs any way to increase saturation/vibrance on Linux just like how it’s possible in windows using AMD control panel (amd gpu). I know nvibrant exists for Nvidia on Wayland but not sure if theirs one for AMD too.

How do I make my Function keys work in-game?

Reddit Linux_Gaming - 30 Jun 2025 - 6:38am

I'm using GNOME but KDE is the same afaik. I have a standard desktop keyboard (no Fn key) and most of my F keys are taken up by DE (F5-F6 are brightness, F10 is mute, etc) so games don't recognize them. How do I fix this?

Are there any distros that come bundled with open source games?

Reddit Linux_Gaming - 30 Jun 2025 - 6:29am

Years ago there used to be some distros that came bundled with free open source games and it was just ready to go right away. There was one that had like 100 games. I don’t know if anyone still makes such distros or if anyone can point me to the old one?

Question on statistics

Reddit Linux_Gaming - 30 Jun 2025 - 5:41am

Hey everyone.

I’m a long time user of all operating since- like aged 9 windows 95 or so, I have always had mac linux and windows.

I’m just wondering about general tracking- for example I love world of Warcraft when I play this on MacOS it’s obvious to the developer because they have an official client.

However I use Bottles on my PopOS desktop gaming PC does Blizzard know this is Linux?

Like is there a better way to represent Linux gamers numbers?

Want to do my best to ensure developers know accurate numbers because we do exist!

Thanks everyone :)

Will Xbox PC app ever work with Linux?

Reddit Linux_Gaming - 30 Jun 2025 - 4:07am

So after I stopped playing destiny 2 one of the only things keeping me from going full Linux for my gaming PC is Xbox game pass. As it stands, I don't believe there is a way to use the Xbox PC app on Linux or games it provides correct? Wine wouldn't even make it work I don't think would it?

Have there been any whispers about Microsoft bringing Xbox PC games over to Linux? All of my steam games work great and I read there are even methods to get epic store games running (just Alan wake 2 for me).
