Minecraft LAN not working between Linux and MacOS

7 May 2024 - 12:35pm

Me and my gf like to play minecraft together on a LAN server hosted from her Macbook. I recently switched from Windows 11 to Linux POP!_OS. We used to have almost no problems back when I was on Windows however now the server only shows up rarely like once a week. We've tried everything. We have set the JVM arguments in her minecraft launcher to prever ipv4 and disabled her firewall, and I have disabled ufw on my PC. Has anyone experienced similar issues?

Btw, YES! we are on the same network:)

Star Wars Battlefront II and Titanfall 2 are borked on my system

7 May 2024 - 11:38am

Title says it all, but for some mroe details - Battlefront II gets past the EA App, loads into a black screen, and then crashes without fail. Titanfall 2 doesn't get any further as it fails to boot at all with EA giving me a vague "failed to boot" error. Tried running things under Experimental, 9.0, 8.0, nothing works.

Anyone able to give some sort of specific advice? Titanfall 2 used to work great but now it just doesn't work at all.

Moving from Windows to Linux Experience

7 May 2024 - 10:39am

Hello, So I've been trying to get into Linux as of late. Because I heard some good stuff people said with it

First,I like to preface that I do have some Linux experience through WSL and doing server hosting with AWS and Azure.

With that experience, I often update the distro before doing anything. Here's my experience

Specs Laptop Lenovo IdeaPad Ryzen 5 4600h GTX1650

My first attempt at it was with Pop OS.

So far so good, And then Pop Shop was bugging out, search cause infinite loop, some items when click for full page, cause it to crash or closed.

Pop shop doesn't show some packages and even flatpak.

My wireless mouse doesn't work at all sometimes.

Installed KDE on it, and it cause more issues because I didn't know you should only use 1

Ended up wiping it

Second attempt, Fedora with KDE Software manager was fine.

Discord screen share dialogue Box bombarded me over and over. So I couldn't even use it

When setting to a secondary monitor ONLY, the system would lag the hell out

And issues with audio equalizations

Wiped

Third attempt, Ubuntu

Most of the journey was fine surprisingly, With experience, I learn to use Easy Effect. I ignore Software Center and download Gnome Software from terminal and manually add Flatpak.

I was finally set up

Now, gaming. Here's the kicker to my balls.

If you have an NTFS partition drive for your games. Just don't bother. Just don't even bother to use Linux.

Linux has very poor support to NTFS. Especially with Steam.

I can get Gog pre-installed games running. Steam games I couldn't as Wine couldn't open the executable from the NTFS.

I don't have a spare drive to move files over to format it to a non NTFS drive. So I couldn't do much about it.

So here I am now. I still wanna give another attempt at Linux, this time, Mint. I will use Mint, or maybe another distro if recommended, any advice I should be aware ahead of time?

What are some Linux distros that will be the least hellish trying to get drivers for a GTX 560m I've tried three versions of Ubuntu one of them worked but the graphics card drivers nearly immediately broke

7 May 2024 - 8:32am

I'm downloading opensuse tw I hope it has support for my card if it's not I'm just going to have to fight with Windows I guess which I'm not looking forward to it refuses to let me past a driver install part which Windows would probably automatically download the drivers needed after installation I've been at this for like 8 and 1/2 hours and I'm starting to go insane I will go insane if I have to install Ubuntu One More Time

7th attempt at installing Linux check

7 May 2024 - 7:39am

Does anyone know if Evolved Perfect World International is playable on Linux?

7 May 2024 - 7:29am

Just as the title says, I'm wondering if Evolved Perfect World International is playable on Linux?

I ask this because, after learning about Evolved Perfect World International last night and reading on the removal of Perfect World International's Pay-To-Win components, downloading and successfully installing Evolved Perfect World International save for DirectX through Lutris, I launched the game only to find that, while patcher.exe does start, it immediately crashes upon drawing the launchers window boarder.

I feel I must apologize for not knowing what flair this post belongs in.

Local files music player with tidal integration?

7 May 2024 - 5:55am

I hope this is the right place to ask, but is there a high quality music player available on linux (or more specifically Fedora) that has local files capabilities and tidal integration? I'm using USB Audio Player Pro on Android and was wondering if there's a linux equivalent. Thanks!

Ubuntu / Debian Gaming Distro

7 May 2024 - 5:17am

Looking for a good rolling release Ubuntu Debian Distro that can act as my main driver for my laptop. Work software we use has compatibility for Red Hat and Ubuntu. From my understanding Ubuntu is more freedom based than Red Hat. Any recommendations on a distro I can try out. Something that has gaming options oriented.

I have one full AMD tablet 8000 series and I have 14 gen i9 with a 4090.

Thank you Community!

Maybe this is a dumb question

7 May 2024 - 3:37am

Would this be the correct file path for cuberpunk 2077 on gog/lutris?:

Home/games/gog/cyberpunk-2077/drive-c/users/name/savedgames/cd project red/cyberpunk2077

When I click all the way through the path I end up in a directory with around 20 separate auto saves and manual saves. I assume this is correct. Im upgrading my ssd to a new drive and want to move my game save to the new drive after a fresh install of OS and lutris and cyberpunk.

Installing Bazzite on an Alienware m17 R5 (AMD), SteamVR question

7 May 2024 - 3:09am

Following this guide to install Bazzite, my only other Linux gaming experience is with the Deck. Installation file for Fedora Media Writer is named bazzite-stable.iso straight from their homepage.

Pre-Installation

I'd almost made a huge mistake and installed it over my laptop's SSD with Windows installed (which as much as I'd like to move off, will most likely need to keep for a few niche uses). Luckily I caught that the only visible drive in the installation screen was 1TB and the drive I'd installed in the 2nd SSD bay was this model of 2TB. I tried swapping SSD bay ports, going into the laptop's BIOS upon reading suggestions to switch hard drive modes to AHCI (only to find that the only available option in that menu), cloning the laptop's 1TB M.2 SSD to the 2TB drive, and trying to switch installation media from a portable SSD to a 256GB USB 3.0 thumbdrive but failing to get FMW to cooperate with said thumbdrive -- nothing could get the installer to detect the SSD. I'd purchased this SSD some time ago with the laptop, intending to use it at first as a second storage drive and then as a second boot option once I learned about the possibility of Bazzite, but had just recently purchased a bunch more storage and found that despite the lesser brand and price, this model of SSD is detected just fine. I'd purchased it just to have as external storage with an enclosure, so hopefully I'm making a good call by swapping around the initial purpose I'd gotten these for.

SSD Weirdness

"Install bazzite-40" is the only main install option from my installation media (SanDisk Extreme Portable 2TB SSD connected w/USB-C), it doesn't pass the "check" option upon initial boot but I'm not sure what else to try at this point since the only suitable USB stick I have at the moment isn't cooperating and the install option starts as intended, although I have not tried running the installation yet. At first I had the WD_Black SSD I had initially purchased for the laptop as the installation media itself, not realizing I needed a separate device like when making a fresh Windows install. At one point I'd formatted the WD_Black SSD to NTFS, but this didn't get it noticed by the Fedora installer either. It dawned on me that there's probably one of several partitions on the laptop's Windows 11 drive making it detectable, but I have no idea how that could be the case for the KingSpec SSD being detected right out of the box while the WD_Black is undetected no matter what. I'm probably missing some critical info about SSD specs that I couldn't glean from the respective product pages.

Bazzite versions

Whatever way I'd set up that SSD as installation media before realizing my mistake included many more install options like bazzite-gnome and bazzite-deck. The Bazzite homepage suggests bazzite-deck for an experience closest to Steam Deck that can apply to Home Theatre PCs, and I would like to at least have the booting into Game Mode part of that, but I recall reading elsewhere that this is a bad thing if not installing the distro on actual Steam Deck hardware. The install guide refers to entering Steam account info to make Game Mode possible upon initial boot so hopefully if it's not enabled by default it's a simple enough setting to change if it's something included in this bazzite-40 install (I've searched and founding getting the opposite, i.e. automatic boot to Desktop Mode on actual Steam Deck hardware is a lot more trouble). Maybe some Linux whiz can share how to set it up for an even better HTPC experience than a SteamOS lookalike -- not that I have any complaints about the appearance of Valve current's offering, although operability has been a different story sometimes.

SteamVR question

Would also like to know if anyone has tried SteamVR with Bazzite or a similar distro and has anything to share about that experience. The reason I ask:

I have a rather stupid but funny and interesting idea to use my Valve Index I got a few years ago with the laptop on my back instead of tripping over the the stupid cable hooked up to my desktop PC or hanging it on some ceiling-suspended abomination (would buy a mesh backpack like this and DP cable adapter so it's easier to make holes for it to breathe and see the mess of cables inside). I need a portable battery with AC outlets to power the headset anyways, so not sure if the default power setting in Bazzite will affect performance in VR. I have a portable battery that could decently accomodate both the headset power cable and laptop plugged in, but the huge power brick adding to the weight of the backpack will make it even more of workout to play than just the laptop and portable battery.

Even if this ridiculous idea doesn't work I'll at least have a beefy gaming laptop with a Linux distro that hopefully suits it well.

Few more laptop specs:

  • RX 6850M XT 12GB GDDR6
  • Ryzen 9 6900HX
  • 32GB RAM

Input latency when playing games on wayland

7 May 2024 - 2:47am

I don't know if it's just me because I'm using an RTX 2060, but I've asked some other people who use NVIDIA, and they say "I've never experienced any input lag" I don't want to say that I might be more sensitive to it because I have a few thousand hours in CSGO and another few thousand hours in fortnite, because the input lag I'm experiencing should be 100% noticeable by everyone. It might also not be input lag I have no idea what it is.

I now aiming in some games feels weird. This mainly includes games that require some form of aiming, games like Dota 2 or something simliar doesn't feel as bad. I guess it could be because I'm not using a Variable Refresh Rate screen with Gsync or Freesync.

I will say I basically see this problem when playing on wayland and on X11, although X11 gives me the option to turn off the compositor which does practically make the issue not noticeable it is noticeable, but it's very small. I don't know how to measure this or if it's even input lag. The frametime seems perfect on most games. I don't know what it could be. Anyone got any suggestions? I would really like to use wayland.
