Diablo IV on Pop!_Os stuttering in fights

24 Oct 2024 - 10:51pm

Im running out of knowledge here and need some insight. My system build for reference: i9-9900k 32G RTX 2070 nvmeSSD with a GSYNC monitor.

Running the game through Steam with argument:

'PROTON_HIDE_NVIDIA_GPU=1 VKD3D_CONFIG=force_bindless_tex_heap gamemoderun %command%' with and without the hide GPU command.

I modify my dxvk this way to prevent VRAM leak (this helps a ton!)

'dxgi.maxDeviceMemory= 7200 dxgi.maxSharedMemory= 7200 dxgi.maxFrameLatency = 2 dxvk.enableAsync = true dxvk.numCompilerThreads = 18'

Now I tried several different setting like modifying the frame latency and removing it completely same with CompilerThreads. Nothing helps with stuttering during fights.

What's bothering me is, FPS is pretty good around 90 to 100.

I tried different in game graphics settings with FSR2 and Nvidia DLSS. FSR2 is what's working best atm.

I tried running on performance, balanced or quality. Nothing helps with stuttering.

My latency does not move at all, around 60. So it's not a latency problem.

I monitored my CPU and GPU temps and loads. Everything looks normal. CPU does not go beyond 50c and around 30-40% load on all cores. GPU is at 60c and 100% load (I suspect my dxvk config here) and I'm on the latest Flatpak Nvidia update (which was yesterday I think?).

Anyone can help me? Thank you so much.

Fun challenge: Getting Solider of Fortune to run under 64 bit Alpine with musl

24 Oct 2024 - 10:15pm

Pretty much the title.

I tried and installing via wine and lutris, which both gave the same error, an error that turned up 0 search results (and wasn't anything obvious like a missing library) which makes me think it's something specific to musl or running in a 64 bit environment or both.

I get the specific error message may be helpful (I don't really think it will be in this case), but I don't have it right now. I'll include it as soon as I can but wanted to hear some speculation and possible solutions anyway.

My first guess is to maybe try running it in a podman pod. Even with there being some hardware passthrough issues, the game is old enough that it might still play fine.

There's also a native linux client but I haven't been able to find it, and I'm not sure it would run either.

Space Engineers - anyone got multiplayer working well?

24 Oct 2024 - 10:05pm

I posted about this on the actual Space Engineers to mostly crickets and stupid jokes.

Curious if anyone has had luck with this? Running it in Steam using various Proton settings I can get Single Player running OK but connecting in multiplayer takes a long time, and crashes after maybe 5 seconds if it ever does connect.

Things I'm considering:

Trying to get it running through Lutris.

Trying to run Glorious Eggroll's build of Proton to get it working, through Steam.

So - anybody have any luck with this, or just suggestions?

Thank you!

I'm 95% ready to switch to Linux. Point me the right way, please!

24 Oct 2024 - 9:29pm

So, as the title states.
I've been on Windows since 98, and over the years I've been watching all the customization and control slowly vanish. At the same time, I've been considering Linux more and more, but I've never actually even seen it run, nor have I ever known anyone who would use it. All the while, I've always been discouraged by my (perhaps incorrect) assumption that Linux is way tougher to set up so that it runs the exact way I'd like it to.

Hence, I turn to you. If this doesn't pan out, I'm just backing up everything en-masse, anything I might need, doing a fresh reinstall of Windows 10, waiting out its discontinuation, and never ever connecting it to the internet again. I would however very much like to NOT do that, and instead, get a clean, comprehensive, SECURE AND PRIVATE system, one which, this is an important part, would allow me to run VMbox, PCEmu, DOSbox, and various Windows games which range anywhere between 1997 and 2009.
Is this... even doable/possible?

I ask any and all gurus and Linux wizards, perhaps even Obi-Wan Kenobi, you're my only hope.

If someone could give me step-by-step pointers on what to get where, how to install, how to set up, yadda yadda, I'd be your platonic admirer in this life and the next.
I've been skimming this sub, and would kinda be interested in Proton-GE, since if I understand correctly, it's perfect for Windows games, correct?
Other than that, the only software I would really need would be the VM/emulators mentioned above. If Proton-GE can run other miscelanous Windows programs, all the better, if not, no biggie.
I would also very much prefer to be the one in control of what and when my OS does, not the Windows way (Fee fill tell yu fhen und how yu fill use yor zystem, JA ?!?!?!)

The floor is open!

AMD vs NVIDIA: performance on linux and choice?

24 Oct 2024 - 6:46pm

Hi all,

I bring to you a question of the eternal debate for GPUs NVIDIA vs AMD:

I am looking at two GPUs mainly the RTX4060 and RX7600:

they are approximately the same price where I live (italy):
https://www.amazon.it/gp/product/B0C8ZQTRD7/ref=ox_sc_act_title_1?smid=A11IL2PNWYJU7H&psc=1
https://www.amazon.it/gp/product/B0C6B3147Z/ref=ox_sc_act_title_2?smid=A11IL2PNWYJU7H&psc=1

Now I know a comparison on this was previously done here: https://www.reddit.com/r/hardware/comments/1cw9cwe/tomshardware_rtx_4060_vs_rx_7600_gpu_faceoff/

And it seems that in the review and in the comment everybody is saying that NVIDIA is better, now I know that may be the case on windows. But I was wondering what about Linux, I know AMD has in the past delivered better drivers (and open-source), but I heard recently that NVIDIA drivers have improved greatly later (albeit they remain closed-source).

BTW, it seems mind boggling to me that last time, I bought a GPU in 2008, (Yep it has been that long) that nvidia was the way to go with much better drivers (that were always closed source.

I will be using the card as eGPU on a TB3 dock on an intel 10th Gen i7 miniPC, with screen connected on the card. I am faily comfortable installing drivers (have not done so, recently but used to do so frequently 6years ago, linux user of almost 20years now).

So I ask if it were you in my situation, which would you get and why?

Why is it easier for Wine to run games than non-games?

24 Oct 2024 - 5:47pm

Here in the fall I finally switched over to Linux and have been very impressed with how much better older games perform with Wine and Lutris than they did on Windows.

However, I find that video game modding has become much harder, as the programs I am accustomed to using run very badly with Wine. Programs have graphical glitches, perform slower, don't register clicks properly, and crash more often if they even run at all.

I find it interesting that a compatibility layer has a much harder time with comparatively simple desktop applications, and I wonder why this is? Do desktop programs interact more directly with the kernel than video games? Is it because a few APIs and libraries are common among many video games? Or is it just because more time has been invested into video game compatibility than non-video games?

Windows VM for 1440p gaming?

24 Oct 2024 - 5:09pm

I’m a bioinformatics student, and I’m excited to finally upgrade my system after years of struggling with a low-end machine. My new setup will feature a main installation of NixOS (Linux) on one SSD, along with a Windows 11 virtual machine on a second SSD, complete with GPU passthrough for gaming. I want to ensure I can run the latest AAA titles easily at 1440p and ultra settings on my VM.

On my main system, I’ll be engaging in extensive programming and modeling, so it’s essential that it can handle demanding tasks like model simulations and evolutionary simulations, which require significant computing power.

I’m open to recommendations and would love to know if the number of cores, as well as the CPU and RAM, would be sufficient to run this kind of VM effectively.

Counter Strike 2 Mouse issue fixed

24 Oct 2024 - 4:51pm

As of 10/23/2024 the Counter Strike 2 mouse issue that happened when playing on non-native resolutions has been fixed. You can now play 4:3 or or other non-native resolutions without problems as long as you set your system res to the same resolution you have ingame (if you dont set the system res to the ingame res the menu wont me intractable) although with the menu bug now it still isn't flawless but it is much more playable for people that use non-native resolution

Patch note line that addresses the issue: "Fixed mouselook inconsistencies when game render dimensions are different from game window dimensions."

Solved: Hunt Showdown Linux Gamma & Sharpening Fix with VKBasalt.

24 Oct 2024 - 4:41pm

Hey fellow Linux gamers!

I wanted to share a quick guide on how to implement a gamma sharpening fix for Hunt: Showdown on Linux using VKBasalt. This can enhance your gaming experience by improving visual clarity. Here’s how to set it up:

  • Prerequisite: Ensure VKBasalt is installed (comes pre-installed with Bazzite).
  • Steam Launch Command: mangohud ENABLE_VKBASALT=1 DXVK_FRAME_RATE=165 %command%
  • DXVK\FRAME_RATE - make your gameplay smoother)

Setup in 4 Easy Steps:

  1. Download vkBasalt.conf and Tonemap.fx
  2. Copy vkBasalt.conf to your Hunt: Showdown Steam folder.
  3. Download & Place Tonemap.fx in /home/YOUR_USER/.config/vkBasalt/reshade/Shaders/.
  4. Edit vkBasalt.conf: Replace YOUR_USER with your actual username.

Usage:

  • Launch Hunt: Showdown via the provided Steam command.
  • Toggle the gamma & sharpening effect with the HOME key.

Troubleshooting Tips:

  • Verify VKBasalt's installation and configuration.
  • Double-check path accuracy in vkBasalt.conf.

Steam "proton" freeze or gamescope mouse draft

24 Oct 2024 - 4:13pm

I used to use Steam on POP OS and everything was fine, but after switching to Nobara (Base on fedora), my Steam would freeze after starting the game.

Then Steam games can be run on Gamescope, but the mouse will drift or lag (I don’t know how to explain it, but the mouse is very slippery, like using ice as a mouse pad). I have tried using Lutris to run games other than Steam. I can play normally with or without Gamescope, like battlenet Overwatch, HoyoPlay Genshin impact...
ps. I play overwatch (battlenet version too lag, but working well, and steam version can only run on ICE MOUSE gamescope)

OS: Nobara Linux 40 (KDE Plasma) x86_4
DE: Cinnamon 6.2.9 X11 (Kde Gnome has same problem)
CPU: Intel(R) Core(TM) i5-10300H (8) z , GPU : Intel UHD Graphics @ 1.05 GHz ]
GPU : NVIDIA GeForce GTX 1650 MobileQ
Flatpak Steam, Ge Proton 9-16
I have tried "Fullscreen Borderless Window, Steam Shader Vulkan in background, Another Proton version, disable mangohud, Try another DE, Disable steam hud in game, Try another mouse"
And the dota2 is work fine(It has linux version, not run with proton)

My steam env var
WINEESYNC=1 WINEFSYNC=1 DXVK_ASYNC=1 DXVK_HUD=compiler _NV_PRIME_RENDER_OFFLOAD=1 __GLX_VENDOR_LIBRARY_NAME=nvidia __GL_SHADER_DISK_CACHE=1 __GL_THREADED_OPTIMIZATION=1 __GL_SHADER_DISK_CACHE_PATH=/home/user/shaders/Overwatch mangohud gamemoderun %command%

need help🥺

My gpu's temperature reached to 88 C while gaming. Is it normal? And how can I optimize my linux laptop for gaming?

24 Oct 2024 - 4:08pm

I have been using linux for more than 2 years now. But recently started playing games in the linux. I am using the bottles to run my linux games. I have nvidia 2050 and its a new laptop(bought it 6 months ago). I was playing GTA IV in it and now I started lagging. So I open NVIDIA setting and checked that the temperature was 88 C. It has happened many times. Also my usual gpu temperature is 42-45 C even I set my gpu setting to on-demand.

So is it normal? And what can I do to reduce the temperature? Or what setting should I change in my NVIDIA setting to reduce the load on my GPU?

How can I optimize the linux for gaming? Is there any guide where someone can redirect me related to optimization? I looked at many articles but none of them were good. Thank you.

Did Nvidia beta 565.57.01 fix washed out colors/elevated blacks in HDR for you?

24 Oct 2024 - 3:31pm

So far tried with standalone gamescope (for example running from TTY, no DE) and via KDE plasma 6.15.

KDE desktop colors look great (standalone bpm also looks fixed), but games still look washed out for me. It's easiest for me to tell with dark scenes, as blacks are elevated to gray.

Using Resident Evil 2 and Uncharted 4/Lost Legacy for comparisons

(Probably should have waited until I got home to post screenshots)

Here's an example of what I'm running via gamescope:

gamescope -f -w 3840 -h 2160 -r 120 --hdr-enabled --adaptive-sync

and for env variables I have:

MANGOHUD=1
DXVK_HDR=1
ENABLE_HDR_WSI=1
