Wine updates break prefixes. Frequently. How to avoid?
Essentially the title. Quite often, after a Wine update a prefix I was using to run one game or another would just stop working in some sort of unpredictable way. The last update I did broke two: for example, WoW just stopped launching (the process started through Battle.net but sat at 0% CPU). In another prefix I can't even run `winetricks` properly, my system gets spammed with `winedbg` processes. This also happened with Proton-GE once or twice IIRC.
The question is: how do I stop this from happening? It wouldn't be an issue if I could just re-generate the whole prefix and go about my day, but it's obvious that the wine's internal prefix update tools doesn't do anything against this issue and some games put their important files in appdata and I can't just rm-rf the prefix and make a new one without reinstalling the whole game and backing up saves.

G-Helper for Linux | A Gaming tool for Gaming devices made by Asus that is meant for Gamers on Linux
Hello everyone, I made this helper utility for myself, mostly since I got fed up with the lack of Ubuntu support from asusctl. I personally find it usefull since I can toggle CPU power modes, RGB, etc. In the tests I did on my machine, it behaves exactly as G-helper does on Windows
It's a direct port of the G-helper from Windows, It currently lacks the Led Matrix thing since my laptop does not have it, if there is interest, I may add it in the future. A direct port in the sense that it has most of the logic that G-helper has around specific device oddities, but alas, I cannot test what I don't own.

Down to the updates :)

Opening PRs and issues is welcome by all.
For the mods, if you don't know what this is.
TLDR it is a tool that Gamers use on their Gaming devices made by Asus on the Linux OS for Gaming performance.
I'm writing this since yesterday it was removed for no apparent reason just about when the post became interesting and people started reporting their experience.

Weird bug with some source engine games?
I'm running Linux mint on a gaming laptop with integrated graphics(amd) and a dell monitor attached to it by hdmi. and sometimes when I try to launch a source engine game(the two i've been seeing this with most is Team Fortress 2 and CS: Source) both screens go black and my mouse is stuck in between my monitors. If im in a discord call I can still hear them and if I have youtube or spotify playing I can still hear it playing properly. however I cannot exit out without manually powering off the pc I cant alt+tab or alt+F4 or open up the start menu.
I can still play these games if I do weird stuff like launch with proton than close the game than launch without proton. Does anyone know why this happens? and a more perminate way to deal with it?

[Assetto Corsa] Has anyone successfully moved AC from storage devices on Steam?
PERCEPTUM
*this is not exactly a tech wanted post*
There's a new horror game called Perceptum (playtest only), and I can't run it at all using ProtonGE, the only thing it does is open up the game and give me a black screen, system usage is fine.
Has anyone tried running it and got the same result?
Since it's new, there's nothing on ProtonDB, thanks

LACT GPU Fan Control
So I'm new to Linux and have just built a Bazzite small gaming PC. The fan on my RX 9060 XT get super loud, so have download LACT and lowered the power limit, reduced the voltage slightly and slight bump to memory speed. On the Thermal tab of LACT under the automatic tab can someone explain what the following settings actually mean and do in real world terms.....
Target Temperature
Acoustic Limit

disk write error libdav1d appears to be a copy protection software mess up
Okay... so I've been running into this problem with a couple of games on Steam. Only a couple. On a drive that has been formatted to a format I've chosen because the least amount of systems complain about this format when I plug it into them. Using formatting tools on Linux systems (I've not used Windows since the 1900s)
These games work when installed on a harddrive that does not have any indication that it is not an internal one (there are various things you can poll when doing read/write stuff). This is why it seems to be REALLY REALLY inconsistent when the "read/write" error shows up (and other cases where some software fails silently)
Going over the behaviour of the error code, and how it seems somewhat inconsistent with any actually behaviour with the actual hardware--I thought it might have been a case where the part that reports errors might have been glitching out and giving the incorrect error
Oh right, if a system is giving errors, there is nothing to stop the part of the system giving errors from ALSO being in error, and messing up which error it reports. I've made that mess up with software I've written--and that is part of the concept given with "casting the runes" as a thing in error handling
Trying to figure it out, there doesn't seem to be a lot of "what to do" showing up... just a large amount of "oh it fixed it on its own". That or using a set of scripts for bazzite that involve Steam having some really really odd ways it kind of messes itself up due to Steam having a few areas that it is kind of wonky
What appears to actually be happening, gave itself away, when uninstalling/reinstalling gave different behaviour on my system depending on what compatibility tool I was forcing a specific game showing these issues
In one case it appears that attempting to reinstall a game, after uninstalling it just had the installer launched from Steam running an undelete on the previous install. Which... uh... explains why working with uninstall/reinstall stuff from Windows has been so wonky. If some of the install binaries will just attempt to run an undelete for its target files. That cannot be healthy. Since the errors are inconsistent based upon what forced compatibility layer--I've only seen the installer mess up like that when I've told it to uninstall/reinstall using that specific compatibility
Based upon the scenario where this error shows up (running games on external storage), the inconsistency with compatibility layers triggering it and how the error message seems to not actually match up with behaviour the systems it is on is actually doing... I have to conclude this error message is the result of copy-protection somewhere in the Windows Installer binary going fairly wonky
There is a non-zero chance that the items in Steam that give this error when running on an external device on a non-Windows system are also causing some minor corruption when installed on Windows systems as well. As this appears to be a case where an attempt at copy-protection is being attempted... buuuuuuuuuuttt... well... an attempt appears to being attempted
Most of the other material I've seen on this odd and inconsistent behaviour from some of Steam's library is uuuuuh... well, it sucks (and is the opposite of helpful)... so I'm adding this into the whole world of things
*edit* further update... after doing some really really hackish messing around. Including copying functional versions of libDav from elsewhere. It seems that upon attempting to run the games giving this error, the launcher will flat out just delete library from its location. It appears it is removing the library, and then attempting to run said library as a source of giving that error. Sure... I _could_ be copying the file into the exact same blocks of memory over and over again... but that seems somewhat unlikely... especially with other nonsense present in what I am doing

Rail Fights just launched on Steam — native Linux build
Hi r/linux_gaming,
I’m the solo developer behind Rail Fights, which just launched on Steam with a native Linux build (not Proton).
It’s a one-screen, top-down arcade shooter where up to 8 tanks move along a fixed oval rail. Controls are intentionally minimal (left / right / shoot), with the challenge coming from positioning, timing, and precise shots.
Game modes:
• Solo Survival — escalating AI bots + online leaderboard
• Co-Survival (2-player co-op) — shared-screen Survival
• Local Party Battles — up to 8 players with flexible team setups
The Linux version supports full controller input (Xbox, PS4, and PS5 controllers tested).
Steam page:
https://store.steampowered.com/app/1914600/Rail_Fights/
Happy to answer any questions.

Today was the day...
I've FINALLY installed Ubuntu on my Computer to test the Linux build from my Desktop game. And... It just worked right out of the Box. Even the transparency and the game positioning! 🤘

Vortex Tinkerlaunch/bacon methods failing
Right now I’m banging my head on a wall trying to get vortex working on chimeraos.
I have tried every way i could find to do it. Even rockerbacon. Every time I’m left with a bunch of useless files related to vortex and no vortex. Failed install with every method including the lutris methods. Steamtinkerlaunch also hasn’t worked for me.
This also failed on Mint, Debian, etc
I had steamtinkerlaunch working years ago, I switched distros and could never replicate it. On my current chimeraos install, I can open steamtinkerlaunch and install Mo2, but the vortex button breaks the software and nothing happens.
Is there anybody on any distro that has been able to get vortex installed in the last year?

Help using a G502X Lightspeef
I’ll start with something simple- I’ve searched for a solution and have not found something that worked.
I have a G502X light speed mouse. Logitech G Hub isn’t a perfect software, far from it, but when I was on windows it worked. Going into my switch to Linux a little over a month ago, I knew it likely wouldn’t work perfectly, but instead it’s been almost non functional.
I first tried piper. It detects my mouse, and lets me set things to the buttons, and remap the light. Except the buttons actually don’t do what it says, really, and no matter what I set the light to it just slowly rotates through all of the colors. In games I can’t remap to what those buttons are, and it’s driving me insane. Sometimes when I reopen piper it then has a new “profile” that previously didn’t exist and is back to default settings.
I also tried Solarr and tried disabling the onboard memory profile, thinking that was why it kept reverting to default settings, but that doesn’t seem to have helped either.
I’m totally at a loss. Minecraft works, however. It has no issue accepting the new buttons and even when a new profile appears in piper it still works exactly as I’ve mapped it, except for the two buttons next to the left mouse button. I can’t get those to work at all. In every other game, none of the buttons are recognized at all.
If anyone has any suggestions on how to either get the mouse working or suggestions on a mouse that doesn’t require software to configure, both are appreciated. I don’t need all of the buttons that the G502X lightspeed offers, but 3 thumb buttons goes a long way for me.

Flufftopia: Fluffmazing Edition - cozy clicker made on a 10 year old ThinkCentre with MX Linux
Hey!
My game Flufftopia: Fluffmazing Edition is now almost a month out. It's a cozy clicker game with cute graphics. Your goal is to transform your city into Flufftopia. Click the piggy, buy buildings, hire workers, upgrade everything ... but wait, something is off.
Key Features
- Cute Graphics
- Multiple Endings
- Relaxing Soundtrack
- Native Linux support
- Optimized to work on a 10 year old laptop
I made the game with Godot on an i5-6500 with integrated graphics and it worked like a charm. Native Linux support is now so natural for me and if there is a problem on Linux, I can fix it fast.
Two people on Linux had a crash bug, could describe it accurately and one send me even their system specs without me even asking for it. I was able to fix the bug fast and got feedback that it works now. Would love if this would always be the case :D
You can get it on Steam: https://store.steampowered.com/app/3174420/Flufftopia_Fluffmazing_Edition_by_Daniel_da_Silva/

Ultra Wide + Macbook M1 + RX9700XT, Is there any hope?
I have a Samsung G95SC (5120x1440@240hz) and I was using:
- Macbook M1 Pro for work via Display Port (DP to USB C dock) (5120x1440@120hz)
- PC with Nvidia 3080 via HDMI (5120x1440@240hz)
Had no issues on Windows or Linux, everything was working perfect at .
Then I decided to go full Linux (Cachy OS) and upgrade to the 9700XT, but then I learned the hard way about the whole issue with AMD drivers for HMDI 2.1 in Linux.
After doing some research I see some people talking about the dongle used for 4k gaming, but not much information regarding ultra wide resolutions (5120x1440), so I tried a couple Cable Matters adapters : DP to 8K HDMI and USB C to 8K, did the firmware update for both mac and windows.
- Macbook with dongles for HDMI / PC with DP = Mac won't get pass 3840x1080@120hz
- Macbook with DP / PC with dongles for HDMI = PC won't get pass 3840x1080
I really can't use the Macbook at lower resolution for work, so it seems like my only options are to either go back to NVIDIA (which is the le$$ likely to happen) or I just go back to Windows for gaming :(
is there really no way around this?

Sober and Roblox links
Hi, fresh CachyOS installation, download all my stuff as usual and then Sober, the game runs well and i can get into experiences using the Sober launcher, but when i try to enter experiences via the Roblox browser it doesnt work, the Sober icon appears for one second then nothing happens. The thing that makes me kinda mad is that this didnt happen on Linux Mint, maybe its a wayland thing?

[Igalia] Enhancing Your Gaming Experience on Linux With Sched_ext for Valve Hardware & Beyond
Alternative Steam client
I'm searching for an alternative steam client for Linux.
I had installed the L4T-Ubuntu on my Nintendo Switch and it work flawless with Box64 and Box86. It is awesome. But using steam client is no good at all since it uses too much RAM and this hardware is limited by its 4GB ram.
So I was searching any alternative client, like GameHub and GameNative alternatives for android. And I know that I can install android, but I want to try and see things working on Linux distributions.
Anyone knows an alternative client that works as those examples I gave? Is there any other way?

Switching from Bazzite
So first let me say that I love Bazzite Linux and I have had a great time with it. I am looking for something that is more of a daily driver so to speak but that I am still able to game on easy enough like I can on Bazzite. What distro would everyone recommend for me to look into before switching?

MangoHUD doesn't show CPU power and VRAM usage.
Hey everyone, I’ve recently switched to openSUSE Tumbleweed, and in MangoHUD I’ve noticed that my CPU power usage isn’t being reported/shown anywhere. When I was using Bazzite, it showed CPU power correctly out of the box. I know Bazzite comes preconfigured with a lot of tweak so I’m guessing I’m just missing something on Tumbleweed.
What do I need to install or configure to get CPU power usage working?
I’m also having an issue with VRAM reporting. This has happened across multiple distros, not just Tumbleweed, and I still haven’t figured out why.
Specs:
CPU: AMD Ryzen 7 5800X
GPU: Intel Arc B580
RAM: 32GB DDR4
Am i missing something like a config file or package? Or is it something to do with MangoHUD?
Any help will be appreciated
