Hardware insufficient for Bazzite, is Ubuntu a good option?

27 Sep 2025 - 8:34pm

I have been looking at putting Bazzite on an old Windows 10 machine that I got free. After doing the research I was set on Bazzite until I did a double check and it seems that my pc isn’t compatible with the necessary Vulkan.

Is this a problem with Ubuntu? I’m wanting to mainly play via Steam and probably WoW.

I have a i5 7400, 24GB Ram and plenty of storage, and a total novice with Linux.

Directx12 on Thinkpad T14g1 AMD

27 Sep 2025 - 8:05pm

I play on Steam, and I find some games which were playable, are now unplayable because my machine now "doesn't have DirectX12" ... it used to work, but then I did a re-install and now apparently something is missing. (I use Arch BTW)

I have used ProtonDB, and checked everything I can.

My big issue is Lego Star Wars: Skywalker Saga (my daughter loves it, and misses it)

Can you point me in the right direction? Please?

I can not run steam games anymore on Gnome 49, NVIDIA RTX 5080, Arch

27 Sep 2025 - 7:12pm

The only way to run games is to `export VK_ICD_FILENAMES=/usr/share/vulkan/icd.d/nvidia_icd.json` then launch steam through the terminal.
What is weird is that on Plasma 6 I have absolutely no issues.

When I run CS:GO, it says it fails to execute vulkan.

Is it a known issue?

I do not see why plasma 6 works well but nothing works on Gnome 49.. :/

Thank!

Visual stutter on x11 when getting hit by shaft, smooth on wayland. How even?

27 Sep 2025 - 7:04pm

Been daily driving linux for the past two years, had some problems here and there but they were all resolvable or at least explainable in some way. On this one however, i'm completely lost.

Diabotical works fine on wayland (sway/hyprland), but on x11 (i3/dwm) there's one particular issue that i don't even know how to debug. Whenever i'm getting hit by shaft, the game jerks for a moment. As far as i can tell, it doesn't happen in any other situation, though it's only noticeable because of the high firerate of the shaft. The attached video was recorded at 120fps and slowed down to 25%, first clip is x11, second one is wayland. The jittering isn't just visible on the recording, it's what i also see on my screen. My FPS is also stable, my frametime graph could not be any flatter. And ignore my horrible tracking skills.

Given that Diabotical is the only game that behaves this way i started by adjusting its settings. exclusive fullscreen/borderless fullscreen/flip fullscreen, multithreaded input on/off, video_true_fullscreen 0/1. It's all the same.

Proton-cachyos, proton-ge, ntsync on/off, also all the same.

How can it be that a display protocol causes a problem in a specific situation in a specific game? i would understand if the game would jerk/jitter for the majority of the time or even randomly, but just when i get hit by shaft? only on x11? how?

Arch linux with cachyos repos

Tearing and scanout enabled for the wayland compositors

Explanation as to why i'm still using Xorg: It just works for me.

I know it sounds dumb, but this is the only problem Xorg ever caused me. Hyprland 0.51 broke tearing/scanout (can't have both enabled at the same time), sway enables and disables direct scanout every frame of a screenshare stream, resulting in horrible stutters.

I'll happily provide other necessary information.

Potentially solution to try for game crashes in Gnome

27 Sep 2025 - 6:33pm

Posting this for posterity because this troubled me for weeks.

tl;dr check that you don't have zoom in the accessibility settings turned on.

I've been getting back into gaming after a year hiatus and I've been experiencing crashes in Cyberpunk 2077. Despite my machine being fairly strong for CP2077, i5-13600K 5ghz, 4070TI, 64gb ram, I thought that maybe it was a VRAM issue as the 4070TI only has 12gb. I had some ultra HQ textures, LOD and whatnot so through a lot of troubleshooting I worked down to a vanilla install with graphics, resolution, everything at the lowest quality which I know should work with my system as I had beat the game before with HQ graphics setting and nothing had really changed other than game patches, but it was still crashing, reliably triggered during the montage scene right after you meet Jackie, but even skipping it would crash the game at some point soon after.

I don't know what made me think of it, but I remembered had turned on zoom in accessibility settings, at 1:1 scaling so it doesn't change anything visually but it is a workaround in Gnome/Wayland to get my mouse would show up in screencasts as I do a lot of them for demo'ing features and tutorials for work. I turned it off, et voilà, crashing disappeared, I've been working on layering back in my mods and so far no crashes.

hell let loose crashes when in the server browser for to long

27 Sep 2025 - 5:33pm

when playing hell let loose, if i sit on the server browser for long especially when in a queue the game will crash, as well as crash the kde desktop along with it.

Desktop restarts but any apps that are installed and ran from a flatpack instead of a rpm file are crashed along with it. If I have discord actively open and not closed to the task bar, I have to relogin to discord as well.

Along with these bizarre effect from the crash, it also crashes the power management services. The services don't restart when kde restarts, and requires me to restart my pc to fix the issue.

My specs:

Operating System: Bazzite 42

KDE Plasma Version: 6.4.4

KDE Frameworks Version: 6.17.0

Qt Version: 6.9.2

Physx with proton and NVIDIA gpu

27 Sep 2025 - 5:04pm

I tried playing borderlands 2 with heroic (having the egs version) I used winetricks to install physx but it doesn't work. But since I did it I have a leak in video memory and the game crash around 2h of playtime. I thought physx was supported on Linux and with the recently open source and deprecation of 32bit support of new gpu i thought it had worked that went into it

Advice for running GOG The Witcher 2 on Arch Linux

27 Sep 2025 - 4:22pm

I recently purchased The Witcher 2 on sale on GOG to explore gaming outside of steam. The linux version on the game launches without sound and terrible performance, I thought I could be slick and run the windows version through the steam client forcing proton, but it won't even load the launcher. Regular wine opens the launcher but the game gets stuck trying to launch.

Any advice on making either version work?

A Radical Proposal: The Most Invasive, Anti-Cheat, and Anti-Privacy Linux for Gaming Success?

27 Sep 2025 - 3:50pm

What if a distro reversed everything? Lock-down the OS and make it spy on everything. Monitor mouse movement, network devices, peripherals, keystrokes, even take periodic screen shots to capture absolutely everything the PC is doing? Make a system that is not intended for any privacy at all, but instead a system literally designed to 1) detect cheats, 2) play video games-- in that order of priority?

Screencaps and information could be posted to a public site and associated with an ID or a profile. Streamers could link that profile in their twitch/whatever so that the community could actively monitor what they are doing on that device. For privacy, they would need another device.

Reached this point because I am so frustrated about cheats and I only use this particular computer for gaming. So, requiring a snitch that monitors for DMA devices seems like a cool idea.

Cyberpunk 2077 crash on Launch

27 Sep 2025 - 3:39pm

Hello! I've started experiencing startup crashes for Cyberpunk today, the game was fine around 2 days ago so I want to ask, is anyone else experiencing this issue?

Here are my specs if necessary (the game usually runs well) Ryzen 5 5600X Rx 6800 32GB DDR4 3600Mhz RAM and my OS and Kernel is Arch Linux 6.16.8-2-cachyos

any replay is appreciated, even if just a simple "no" or "yes" whether or not it's just my issue

EDIT: Forgot to mention my proton, it is GE-Proton10-17

Any guides on lutris and bottles?

27 Sep 2025 - 3:36pm

As title. I've Been gaming on Linux for around 4 years now and have never used either of these yet I hear them mentioned all the time. I usually just add non steamgame to library, change proton to experimental and boom. Most games just work. Then proton tricks for missing bits some require. However I see a lot of posts about these other ways and feel like I should know at this point. Starting to feel like I've got imposter syndrome
