Linux Gaming 9070 XT VS 5080 VS 7900 XTX Benchmark CachyOS
With the upcoming release of wuwa on steam, has there been any news about whether it will support proton or not?
Minecraft Launcher issue
Posting this here in-case it helps anyone else.
I've been using Curseforge to download and play modpacks for Minecraft. Recently though, after the first initial play of the modpack the Minecraft Launcher just says, "Whoops an unexpected error occurs".
I searched on this and found if you removed the webcache2 directory it will fix this when you first start it again. However, after you close the game and relaunch it has to do this again.
I'm still not sure what is causing this problem, but I found if you go into Game specific settings in the Curseforge app and have it launch minecraft instead of using the minecraft launcher, this isn't a problem anymore.
So if anyone else ran into this problem like me, I hope this helps.

Want to switch to linux for gaming, I have a ryzen 7800x3d with a 4080s, which linux is best for gaming only and running mods (vortex mod manager, mod organizer, frosty mod manager, etc.)
I want to shift away from windows to linux for gaming, looking to minimize disruption and also need access to onedrive, dropbox, and idrive, is this something supported by linux?

Steam on Linux/Steam deck not able to install beta build of a game?
I'm trying to help a fellow game dev test out his game. I was able to successfully download and launch the normal version of the game. I go into the game's properties and switch the beta section to preview. When I exit the menu and go back in, the value is reset to none.
I then fired up the steam deck and tried to change the option there. It changed successfully. But when I installed the game, it installed the normal one.
On my desktop, if I uninstall the game, I can see (preview) next to the library entry and I can see the beta option marked now. But whenever I install the game it's set back to the non-preview version.
I don't recall anything in Steamworks I had to set to specifically allow Proton. I have steam play enabled for all titles.
Has anyone else seen this and resolved it? Next step for me will be to reach out to Steam support. There's no fancy GPU stuff going on or anti-cheat, so I'm kinda surprised this is happening.

Proton Experimental adds fixes for GTA V Enhanced and more for Linux / Steam Deck
Wreckfest 2 running nearly out the box
Did a quick test with Wreckfest 2.
Out the box, crashes. Changed to Proton Experimental got it rock solid stable with excellent performance.
Only minor issue is some graphical glitches (misloading textures).
Not a bad showing for an early-access title!

Steam stopped working suddenly
Games no longer launch... they will go to "running" status but not actually load.
Also steam itself when using the main window of it, is vanishing every 5-20 minutes and reopening.
What do I do?

Native game runs fine through cli or double click, but refuses to run through lutris.
I am trying to run the GOG version of Project Zomboid which has a native linux port, the game comes with a start.sh and runs perfectly fine if I double click it or do ./start.sh in the terminal.
But for continuity I like all my games to be added to Lutris and run through there and so I added the game there as a native linux game and pointed it to the start.sh but the game doesn't launch, I click start and it just keeps running in the background and doesn't show up.
Please help! I am on cachyOS
EDIT: The problem was mangohud, the disabled it for this game and it runs fine with lutris now!

Should I install the Steam Deck OS on my PC or go with something else?
I’ve tried gaming on Linux many times, but I always end up back on Windows because of small issues. But after getting a Steam Deck, I’m way more confident about it since I haven’t had any problems running games on it.
But every time that I try it my PC had Nvidia GPU and Intel CPU,maybe that's why I had so many compatibility issues in the past with Linux because of drivers.
Now I’m building a PC with full AMD (GPU and CPU) to have the best compatibility possible, and I’m thinking about installing the Steam OS (Steam Ddck recovery image) on it. But I’m wondering… is that a good call? Or should I go with something like ChimeraOS or HoloISO that’s more tailored for PC hardware?
Can I run into any problems for using the steam deck Image on PC? Would love to hear some tips about it.

Using Gamemode without a card0?
I have an nvidia card that gamemode refuses to apply settings to. I'm running fedora 41 and the /sys/class/drm directory only contains folders for card1 (integrated amd) and card2 (nvidia 4070s). When I run gamemoded -t with the option "gpu_device=2" set in the global config it ignores that part and goes after card0 anyway, then outputs this failure:
ERROR: Couldn't open vendor file at /sys/class/drm/card0/device/vendor, will not apply gpu optimisations!
ERROR: Failed to find Nvidia GPU with expected index!
ERROR: Error querying valid values for attribute 'GPUGraphicsClockOffset' on
[gpu:0] specified in query '[gpu:0]/GPUGraphicsClockOffset[4]' (No such
attribute).
ERROR: Failed to parse output for "[gpu:0]/GPUGraphicsClockOffset[4]" output was ""!
ERROR: External process failed with exit code 1
ERROR: Output was:
ERROR: Failed to call gpuclockctl, could not get values!
ERROR: Could not get current GPU info, see above!
Is the config option supposed to say something else? How can I force it to look at the right card?

AMD vs NVIDIA? Intel?!
Im currently working towards building my first PC, i currently have a laptop
And Im also very much inclined to switching to Linux (Im in the midst of doing my research overall) My question here is which of these 2 would be preferable? I have seen that Nvidia can be a bit of an issue with the drivers, is it true?
How do they stack up in terms of gaming performances? Is it the same as Windows where it just comes down to the raw power of the gpu or does Linux have some sort of advantage for either One?
Also! How does Intel stack up? Their b580 card was pretty good for the price and Im curious to see what they Will do with their Next GPUs, but how did their current gen fair?

Changing OS
Hi all
Just a quick one, I'm running a 6700k & 1080ti on Linux mint cinnamon.
I've managed to get it all sorted, games play stable so far ( Biggest stress test would be either WoW - Cataclysm & Satisfactory )
I know the kernel is older on Mints LTS.
My question is with my specs, is there any point moving to say Fedora or Bazzite, would there be any notable difference?
This machine won't be getting upgraded any further
I've tried Nobara & PopOS both seem fine but mint was just a bit more comfortable

Best NVIDIA-based laptop for Gaming + Coding.
Hello there!
I’m looking for the most compatible laptop for both gaming (like HD2, WoW, etc.) and Android development. I’m an AMD (or “red”) fan, but unfortunately, there’s no mobile port for the 7900XTX. The highest option currently available is the 7800 (which I already use on my desktop).
The issue is that the 7800XT doesn’t have enough power to run HD2 on ultra settings, which is what I aim for. Another challenge is that the only company I’ve found producing laptops with AMD graphics is Tuxedo. Although they’re a great company with excellent laptops, the 7800 still falls short of my performance needs.
As for my Linux experience, I’m currently on Nobara 41. Before that, I used pure Arch with GNOME. Both provided a great experience, so I can comfortably work with Arch-based or Fedora-based distros.
Hence, my questions are:
- What’s the best NVIDIA-based option (like a 3080 or 3090) that offers excellent Linux compatibility?
- Which distro would pair best with such a laptop?
