How many times have you changed distribution? How many times you just had to take a break from running through configuration process?

13 May 2025 - 3:33pm

I'm currently fighting with CachyOS and Heroic/Wine/Proton issues.. None of games I managed to install work (I have shitty connection on that device, so it works, but games in more than 2GB takes hours to download if they won't crash 🤣) and it's again issue with it.. Same problems had on Windows 10.. I mean, it's old rig that remembers first decade, so I don't expect miracles, but.. At this moment I decided to just put it away for some time. You all have same issue?

Skyrim modding and Vortex

13 May 2025 - 3:26pm

Thinking about switching from windows 11, but the only game I play is Skyrim with mods using Vortex and I am not sure it will work OK on linux.

What are the obstacles I may encounter? It is a good experience overall? 100% replicable or some things don’t work?

Thank you for your attention to a noob! _^

How to use FSR 4 and Optiscaler ?

13 May 2025 - 2:55pm

Hi

I am on Fedora 42 KDE

I Have the RX 9070XT and a 4k screen

I run all my games through Steam Flatpak version

I want to enable FSR4 in Diablo 4 (I know its shit, but want to play it at least once)

Diablo only supports FSR2 and DLSS

I have read that with optiscaler you can enable FSR 4 in titles that do not support it

So where do I download Optiscaler (it is not in the discover store) ?

How do I install optiscaler ?

How do I enable Optiscaler for Diablo 4 ?

thanks

Configuration for pirated games/Epic/other sources with Heroic Game Launcher

13 May 2025 - 2:41pm

I am running Fedora 42 Gnome, my specs are 5600x,3070ti,32gb, I have a D drive where i have all my games installed from Windows, some pirated, some form Epic, some from Steam.

I installed Wine, then Heroic, then GE-PROTON, here are my issues:

  • For the Pirated games, they run fine but the only thing is the saves from Windows do not appear, is there a way to make them recognize them or do i need to copy paste them from the Windows C Drive?
  • I also got this for GOT pirated, but the driver is 570.144-1 so I am not sure where that is coming from, is it safe to ignore it?

https://preview.redd.it/etgnhg3zmj0f1.png?width=458&format=png&auto=webp&s=ebeb11058237e2cfd411c7d281ed3887bb51f017

  • For RDR2, I have it from Epic, already installed, tried this[1], and adding the launcher first and possibly launching the game from there, but the game is not recognized and Epic Online Update service can't be installed. The first time i tried to add it as a game, not from the library, Rockstar game launcher was installed but the game did not appear as owned, then after trying the before method[1] it only outputs this:

https://preview.redd.it/emwonfw9nj0f1.png?width=640&format=png&auto=webp&s=3893ba8586bde59652ba462fa469417a3e7758e8

  • I am not sure how to fix it, I do not want to install them again as I would not have the necessary space, would not like to go through that process again! Any help is appreciated since I have not found how to to do this via newer resources, all youtube videos i found date back to 2023, tried to follow this one, if there is a better easier way please let me know, i am a total noob but really wanted to get gaming working so i can move to linux fully. Thanks!!!

Tips for making Linux my main OS?

13 May 2025 - 2:27pm

Hello everyone, I've always been on and off on different distros (PopOS!, Linux Mint, Ubuntu) but Ive never seem to get a good stable state on any of those OS's and even more so on gaming side.

So I would like any tips and tricks and thinks to notice so we can gather resources on this post so we can help someone (like me as well) to have a stable OS experience (without weird lags) and a stable gaming machine without having to use a VM with windows installation in it so you can just play some games.

If any one of you have any good tips please post them below.

For starters a really good guide to start off with Linux Mint is the one below:

13 May 2025 - 1:57pm

Currently i have a 180hz monitor, when i set at 60hz it seems like it truly work on 60hz but when i change it to 180hz it look even worst than 60hz. Are there anyone that have the same problem with me. I have window running parallel and it still work wells with 180hz so i think it is not the problem from hardware or cable.

Switch?

13 May 2025 - 1:21pm

I haven't really used Linux in years, but ran a dual boot Ubuntu/Windows 7 in college. Didn't really use a PC for much of anything for a long time. Over the past year or two though, that has changed some. I've started doing a decent bit of programming for data process automation for work and enjoy learning coding; as well as I've made the transition from console gamer to PC after purchasing a gaming laptop after my XBox One died.

I went with Windows for both simplicity and compatibility and have Windows 11; but after looking online it doesn't seem that Linux has nearly the compatibility issues with gaming that it did ten years ago when I ran Ubuntu given the efforts Steam has made. I'm considering trying out a Linux system again as an all-in-one for a gaming, coding, and practical-use machine. I mostly play RPGs and strategy games as opposed to a lot of the more popular multiplayer Royale games that seem to be the major compatibility issues. Civ 7 and Assassin's Creed Shadows being the most recent two. As for coding; I'm currently partial to python; but wouldn't mind expanding my JavaScript or C++ knowledge with the right project.

Wanted to get your thoughts before jumping the gun? I'm considering going with Pop OS for specific distro due to better compatibility with NVIDIA graphics hardware (My laptop runs a GeoForce RTX off the top of my head). Would it be worth my time? Will my save data carry over? Would it be worth setting up dual boot; and if so how would you recommend partitioning with a gaming PC? Last time I dual booted I had a central partition for shared files like documents and pictures.

Open to whatever feedback y'all have.

Steam creating .desktop files as executable

13 May 2025 - 1:08pm

Hi! I just found that on NixOS, the .desktop files (located in ~/.local/share/applications) that are created by Steam have executable permissions -- permission rwxr-xr-x. Can anyone check if this happens in their distro of choice? I want to see if this is a thing overall or just for some reason a NixOS only thing.

Best mod manager for Oblivion: RE?

13 May 2025 - 1:05pm

Title. I seem to understand Vortex doesn't work on Linux? What about through Distrobox/Windows VM? I would really like access to official Nexus mod collections and publish my own perhaps.

But if that is just impossible, what third party mod manager is considered the go to for modding such games/Oblivion:RE in particular?

I'm about to switch from Mint to CachyOS for driver reasons and will probably set up Distrobox with BoxBuddy. Using 2 M2 SSDs in my laptop, one for system and one for games/recordings & python boxes.

How's Kali for Gaming?

13 May 2025 - 12:43pm

EDIT: Maybe I hadn't made it clear or something. I'm not asking if I should do it or not, I absolutely will anyway, I'm asking what are some things I should consider to make it work and/or (specifically) why it won't work as well. I will not use VMs because I need access to HW. I will not not use Kali for gaming just because "it's not made for that", if you want to change my mind, I'm gonna need specifics.

So my current main system is Kali Linux (yes, I know I'm a tru3 l33t haxx0r), and my gaming system is my SteamDeck running SteamOS.

I'm building a gaming PC to replace both, plus do music production which is something I've not managed to get comfortable with on Linux unfortunately, so I will dual-boot Win10 and... Kali.

Buuuuut.... I would prefer to game on Linux, at this point I genuinely know Linux better than Windows and get much less frustrated with it, there are maybe one or two games that I would want to run on Windows due to peripherals involved.

Buuuut... I would also like to use Kali as my distro of choice for gaming. I obviously know it's not "for" gaming, but it's my daily use already and I quite like it, I'm not a fan of arch-based distros at all, I'm decent at Pacman at this point but I understand decently well how an apt-based system works and how it's structured and the various common pitfalls, and Kali is a rolling-release debian distro that I also need for studying cybersecurity (I mean playing CTFs).

At present, I can't test myself how my existing Kali install would be for gaming because it's on a shitbox T440p ThinkPad which can't run a full-screen youtube video without molesting the swap partition.

So what I would like to know, are there any gaming-specific considerations to gaming on Kali, from someone who has had experience with that, or had experience like it (e.g. with a rolling-release unstable/experimental apt-based distro).

From what I'm thinking, what would be the big deal, really? If anything it'd be miles better than Ubuntu/Debian etc. because it's got much closer to bleeding edge packages, and I don't mind the instability really, I'm willing to get down dirty chrooting into a busted distro, it's how boys become men, and I'm a woman so idk how I fit into that but would like to find out.

I'm also gonna take my MS Storage Spaces on my windows install to be transplanted onto my new boot drive and jiggle them around into separate NTFS drives, and mount them across on Linux with the ntfs-3g driver or whatever it's called now, and use that for shared game storage, just in case I want to launch something on Windows Steam, will it bust up my wine prefix data, or can I somehow add just the game itself, like e.g. from steamapps/common/ without the compatdata and such?

All I need is the proprietary nvidia drivers, steam (which runs fine in and of itself on Kali), and then some of those 3rd party proton versions for any animeshit and so on and I'm golden, nah?

I also plan to shove some emulators on it, I'm very lazy so can I just run emudeck on it so it sets up emulationstation-de and everything for me?

I'm using a AMD GPU, but I don't see on configuration an option for AMD encoders (Sunshine)

13 May 2025 - 11:45am

Using void linux, the performance with sunshine is poor even when I have connected my main pc via ethernet, but if I use steam link the performance is much better (but I can't use steam link, when I open a non steam game it just display a black screen)

I have tried using sunshine via flatpak and appimage. the only thing I see is the VA-API encoder option but there is only one option availabe there.

Swapping my W10 for Mint hardware support question

13 May 2025 - 11:37am

Hi, I will be swapping my W10 for Mint when security update end this year. Recently bought 9070xt (weary happy with purchase), from what I understand it should be supported on Mesa 25 and onward. And just want to make sure that it will work.

Does Marvel Rivals work properly on Linux?

13 May 2025 - 10:51am

I have had a random bug on windows for quite a while where a random command prompt keeps appearing and disappearing. Literally nothing I do works. Tried restarting, downgrading windows and my graphics card firmware.

Tried using process monitor but even that can’t find what is opening that.

I have reached the point where the only way I can play again is to completely re-download windows. But why redownload windows if I can use this moment to switch to Linux.

Anyways, will this game work? What “OS” should I use?

9070xt drivers

13 May 2025 - 10:40am

How are the drivers on the mesa drivers for the 9070xt holding up? are they better than they were at launch?? i haven't been able to find a ton of new information that isn't from around a month and change ago (early April) and was wondering if they'd managed to get any better since i was looking at getting a 9070xt soon.

New to Linux gaming, a few non-distro/DE questions

13 May 2025 - 9:38am

Edit: moved from another thread.

My existing gaming PC (2017 build running Win10 which can't update to Win11, thankfully) is now at a point where it won't even run games that should still work with the hardware (narrowed down a combination of Windows 10 and the Nvidia driver for a 1080 TI). I'm now in the process of building a new gaming PC (parts ordered and to be ordered shortly) which will run on Linux (narrowed down to either Nobara or Bazzite as the distro of choice, will research Cachy) with the following parts list:

  • CPU: AMD Ryzen 7 9800X3D
  • Mobo: MSI MAG X870E Tomahawk WiFi
  • RAM: Team T-CREATE 64 GB DDR5 6000 kit
  • Video Card: XFX Mercury Radeon 9070 XT OC

I have a couple of questions since I'm new to using Linux for gaming (I have a couple of PCs running Linux, but they're more for casual use):
* I'm looking at an M.2 storage configuration that will have one M.2 drive be exclusively for the OS and applications, and another exclusively for games. Is there anything I should be aware of with this storage configuration as far as potential issues?
* I'm also looking to replace my pair of Qnix monitors with two different monitors: one would be the MSI MEG 34 inch 3440x1440 monitor, and the other would be the Samsung Odyssey Neo G8 (3840x2160). With those monitors being different resolutions but both connected to the 9070 XT, is there any issues to be aware of? I see it might be as simple as asserting the display to use as part of the command string to start the games. I have some older games that probably would not behave well on a 21:9 display (Star Trek Star Fleet Command comes to mind, even with the HD pack).

US Senator Tom Cotton wants Geo-location tracking embedded into GPUs and A.i. hardware

13 May 2025 - 8:48am

You read the title correctly. https://www.tomshardware.com/pc-components/gpus/u-s-inks-bill-to-force-geo-tracking-tech-for-gpus-and-servers-high-end-gaming-gpus-also-subject-to-tracking

Senator Cotton is stuck on stupid but yes this is track you ware embedded into the physical hardware that the consumer will pay for. Keep in mind that it would NOT just be geo location tracking, it will be invasive in other areas. The idea the bill is based on would amount to forced participation in the US cold war against China. I know most people are lazy, but its time to contact your:

  • congressional representative
  • senator
  • governor
  • state legislature

https://www.congress.gov

Tell them to destroy Senator Cotton's bill and kill all other ideas similar to it. No tracking period. The US government needs to mind its business.

Lastly, I'm not pro: US, West, East, NATO, or China. I'm pro-F-off, pro-mind your business, get out of my tech, and go find someone else to participate in your cold war antics.

1st time using Linux for gaming

13 May 2025 - 8:34am

hey this is my 1st time using Linux for gaming ive previously used ubuntu on my very low end laptop some time ago.

recently I came across batocera but it doesn't fullfill my needs.

I want to run a lightweight linux os on my old pc

can you guys recommend me a good distro which is lightweight currently I am going to install it on a 128g usb flash drive.

I want to install steam on it cuz some games which aren't playable on windows are playable on Linux

i tested it in batocera but steam on batocera is gittery.

basically I want a plug and play drive that works with nvidia gpu too as I ordered a new laptop with nvidia gpu.
